THE LAST KEEPER

A warm field pavilion was pitched in the sunny center of Karokai Valley, shielded from the mountain wind by titan serpent Zaira’s coils. Smoke from a cedar campfire drifted steadily into the blue sky, carrying the comforting aroma of boiling broth and flatbread.

Outside the canvas flap, Bukata sat comfortably on a thick wool blanket with his back resting against a supply crate. Clean linen bandages were bound securely over his cracked ribs, and he chewed on dried venison while laughing heartily with young Ulekai.

Inside the medical tent, Master Sandshade Koru, Marshal Salka, and Healer Lira gathered around Sagiri to conduct a thorough examination. Sagiri sat cross-legged on a low cot, his traveling tunic open to reveal his bare chest and shoulders.

Lira took a gentle breath, pressing both palms against his sternum as emerald waves of healing aura flowed from her fingertips. Her cellular diagnostic energy spread quietly across his chest, checking every blood vessel and muscular tissue with tender care.

Beside her, Master Sandshade Koru held Sagiri’s right wrist, his milky, blind eyes narrowing in deep concentration. The blind master listened to the subtle rhythms of Sagiri’s bloodline, tracking the primordial resonance echoing within his spirit matrix.

Marshal Salka stood behind the cot, placing two calloused fingers against the base of Sagiri’s neck. For several quiet minutes, the only sound within the canvas walls was the soft crackle of the hearth and the steady rhythm of Sagiri’s breathing.

“The obsidian crystallization is completely dissolved,” Lira announced with a soft sigh of relief, letting her green aura fade. “His heart valves are clear, his lungs expand smoothly, and his blood flows with natural, healthy warmth.”

“The Five Relics have achieved permanent biological fusion,” Master Koru confirmed, his raspy voice filled with ancient reverence. “The Golden Spear, the Beast Horn, the Hammer, the Silver Mask, and Nokai are no longer tearing at his physical vessels.”

“They have settled into his bloodstream like five quiet rivers flowing through a single bed,” the blind master continued gently. “The lethal spatial pressure that once threatened to tear his mind apart has vanished entirely.”

Marshal Salka did not smile, his dark eyes studying the calm expression on the young Keeper’s face. The veteran commander slowly withdrew his hand from Sagiri’s neck, folding his arms across his armored chest with heavy solemnity.

“The immediate spiritual crisis is over, and the dark vault is sealed,” Salka spoke in a low, measured voice. “However, the fundamental law of mortal flesh cannot be cheated, and the biological cost remains absolute.”

Lira’s hands tightened against the coarse blanket on the cot, her misty grey eyes darting toward the marshal with sudden fear. “What do you mean, Marshal Salka? His vitals are stable, and his internal organs have fully repaired themselves.”

“A mortal body was never built to conduct the continuous power of five primordial mastercraft relics,” Salka answered plainly. “Even in perfect balance, their energetic friction forces his cells to burn through life energy at five times the normal rate.”

“He has broken the ancient eighteenth-year threshold that killed every past Keeper,” Master Koru explained sorrowfully. “Yet his natural mortal lifespan has been severely shortened. His cellular fire burns too fast, leaving him only a handful of years upon this earth.”

Lira’s lower lip trembled, and hot tears spilled over her lashes and fell upon her folded hands. “After everything we endured in the slave mines of Lanka… after crossing the void… why must there still be a price?”

Sagiri looked at the weeping healer, his dual-colored amber and silver eyes filled with profound peace. He reached out with a steady hand, gently cupping Lira’s soft cheek and brushing away her falling tears.

“Do not cry, Lira,” Sagiri said softly, his voice carrying the gentle warmth of a spring sunrise. “This is not a tragedy, nor is it a curse.”

“How can you say that?!” Kaka roared from the doorway, pushing the heavy canvas flap aside as he marched in with Kiuga and Lady Kiana. “You are eighteen years old, Sagiri! You just saved the entire continent from turning into ash!”

“You deserve to grow old, sit by a northern fire, and drink wine until your beard turns white!” Kaka barked, slamming his heavy fist into the wooden tent post. “We won the war! You should have decades of peace ahead of you!”

“I never wanted to live forever as a cold, lonely statue hidden beneath the earth, Kaka,” Sagiri replied with a faint smile. “I took the five relics into my blood so that you, my squad, and the people of all five lands could walk freely in the light.”

“A handful of years lived in freedom, surrounded by the brothers and sisters I love, is worth far more than a century of fear,” Sagiri added softly. “I am grateful for every sunrise I have been given, and I regret nothing.”

Kaka stared at his commander, his fierce scowl slowly softening under Sagiri’s sincere gaze. He wiped his nose with his leather gauntlet, exhaling a rough breath before planting his boots firmly on the ground.

“Then we make every single day count!” Kaka declared, pounding his broad chest with fierce resolve. “We build the grandest cities, train the finest cadets, and make sure no one ever threatens the peace you bought!”

“And I will never stop searching for a remedy,” Lira said with quiet determination, holding Sagiri’s fingers tightly in hers. “I will study every ancient botanical manuscript in Cilsi and Yalami until I find an herb that can restore your cellular vitality.”

“The private libraries of the Sekana clan in the southern dunes hold centuries of void-restoration records,” Lady Kiana added with an elegant nod. “My people will dedicate all our research to supporting the health of our Supreme Chief.”

Kiuga adjusted his tactical satchel, his sharp eyes shining with deep pride. “A true warrior does not measure life by its length, but by the peace it leaves behind. We will construct a new realm worthy of your sacrifice, Sagiri.”

Outside the flap, Maita, Zolinka, and Ulekai stood side by side, their faces bright with unbreakable loyalty. Bukata leaned forward from his blanket, striking his armored chestplate in a firm, resounding salute of brotherhood.

The heavy crunch of boots echoed outside across the frozen gravel, followed by the rustle of southern cloaks. General Zafaru entered the tent, holding a sealed parchment scroll stamped with the crimson wax crest of Tagayia.

“A priority dispatch from the imperial capital, Supreme Chief Sagiri,” Zafaru announced with a respectful bow. “The couriers rode without rest through the night from Alika City.”

“The Convergence Hall has been fully prepared,” Zafaru continued, handing the scroll to Sagiri. “Supreme Mandra Taziraka, Grand Marshal Senraki, Kun Nakia, Chief Tendai Mbeki, and Chief Linga Maaka have all assembled.”

“The rulers of all five lands are waiting for your arrival to begin the Great Summit,” Zafaru added with a broad smile. “They will not open the council until the Last Keeper and Squad 25 take their seats.”

“Are the southern legions prepared to move?” Sagiri asked, rising smoothly to his feet and fastening his dark traveling tunic.

“Forty thousand southern spears, ten Sandshades, and our heavy supply wagons stand ready at the valley mouth,” Zafaru answered proudly. “The warriors are eager to escort their Supreme Chief home.”

Sagiri lifted Nokai from beside the cot, sliding the gleaming silver-veined master blade into the sheath along his spine. The Five Relics within his blood hummed with steady warmth, filling his limbs with calm strength.

He stepped out of the pavilion into the bright morning sunshine, greeted by the thunderous cheers of thousands of southern spearmen. Titan serpent Zaira lowered her massive head to the earth, rumbling softly as Sagiri stroked her armored snout scales.

“Mount up, Squad 25!” Sagiri commanded, his clear voice carrying across the rocky spires with calm authority. “Our work in the northern mountains is finished. We ride south to Alika City!”

The bronze horns of the Southern Host sounded across the basin, echoing off the snowy spires in a triumphant call. Thousands of polished spear tips gleamed under the morning sun as the grand march toward the dawn of a united continent began.
