Chapter 2039: Like Dead Men

”Do you have something to say to me, Lady High Lord?”

Rex stood before the blond woman and crossed his arms.

Even though he was going to give High Lord Rashal’s wives some face, he was still on guard after what happened on the rooftop. Though it was unlikely—there was a chance the two of them still wanted him gone regardless of High Lord Rashal’s decision.

He was facing the meek one, but there are predators that hide under a sheep’s skin.

”I haven’t properly introduced myself.” The blond woman laced her petite fingers together in front of her stomach and offered a faint smile, though it still seemed to close her eyes. She has a naturally kind smile. ”My name is Donna. Lady Donna or simply Donna, whichever suits you. And yes, I was hoping that we could talk for a moment.

”I promise it won’t take long at all.”

”Sure.” Rex shrugged; he had no problem talking with her. ”What do you have in mind?”

Donna tilted her head down for a second, contemplating or perhaps embarrassed.

She collected her thoughts and then lifted her gaze to meet Rex’s again.

”First of all, I’d like to apologize on behalf of Elizabeth. What happened earlier on the rooftop shouldn’t happen, and it must be really unfair for you since you’re here out of request, not necessity. But I assure you, Elizabeth was doing that simply because she cared for High Lord Rashal deeply.”

”No need to apologize. As long as she didn’t escalate things, then I don’t mind. And I am here because I came to an understanding with High Lord Rashal, so being here is a necessity.”

”T-That’s good.”

Donna smiled and breathed easily again.

It seemed she was imagining that the conversation would be far worse.

Since it didn’t, she felt far more at ease.

”Do you think I’m someone unreasonable?” Rex chuckled at her reaction.

”Seeing what happened on the rooftop,” Donna nodded shamelessly. ”You can’t blame me for thinking that.”

”High Lord Rashal wanted me to handle things quickly, so I need to be a little rougher than normal. My apologies.”

”It’s fine. I understand why you did what you did.”

Rex nodded, and then tilted his head a little. ”Do you have anything else to say?”

”Erm... I’m curious as to what you think about the Purgation Duel.” She paused, almost like saying the next words were hard for her. ”Do you think everything will be completely fine? Do you think we would win it?”

”Do I think everything will be completely fine? No.” Rex shook his head. The Purgation Duel is a battle that would determine whether one side would survive or not, including those under them—so everyone would fight with all they got. It won’t be fine. ”Bad things are inevitable, especially when our enemies are at least as strong as us. But I do think we would win.

”Just that we need to pay a heavy price for that win.” He added truthfully.

No matter how the Purgation Duel went, it would be inevitably fierce.

Nobody wanted to lose. Nobody wanted to die. Naturally, they would use everything in their arsenal.

And that includes Rex.

Donna’s shoulders tensed, but she already expected this answer.

Regardless of their preparations, the Purgation Duel would no doubt be extremely fierce and bloody.

”I don’t know how to ease into this—but I have seen a glimpse of your past. I know, I’m sorry.” Donna smiled apologetically, and then continued. ”I’ve seen how you protected those close to you with all you have. It was... admirable. I also know that you’re special. Seeing you feels the same—as seeing Rashal for the first time.

”Can-can I ask you to also use your all to win and protect Rashal?”

”I am sure High Lord Rashal can protect his own, but yes—I’ll do my absolute best to assist him,” Rex replied with an assuring voice and a nod. He thought Donna was going to say something unnecessary, but turns out she was only concerned about High Lord Rashal.

In her eyes, Rex might do something spiteful because of what Elizabeth did.

Perhaps he’d deliberately let High Lord Rashal die and then take the victory for his own.

And that would be devastating, as he was supposed to be on their side.

Her concern was understandable, and frankly, Rex respected her for putting aside her pride and doing what she needed to do in order to appease his feelings in case he was still offended by what happened on the rooftop.

”Besides, our enemies are only Demigods.” Rex shrugged his shoulders. ”I’m not sure if you’re aware, but I’ve fought Gods before. Alas, the Gods were in a mortal body and were restricted, but still, they are Gods. And I’m still here now, aren’t I?

”High Lord Rashal picked me because I don’t lose in a battle, Donna. And I’m not planning to lose this time, too.”

Donna sucked in a cold breath.

She was surprised by what Rex said.

Mortal body or not, heavily restricted or not, Rex had fought a God and lived. That was the equivalent of a powerful Demigod trading blows—with a lesser God inside the God Realm. Only a monster among monsters could claim such a thing.

And that assured Donna that things would end well.

”It’s going to be hard for you today,” Rex offered a faint smile—and then walked past her. ”Though you aren’t going to watch the Purgation Duel, know that High Lord Rashal would win. Also, tell that to your grumpy other. I’m sure she’ll have an easier time after hearing what I have to say.”

Donna didn’t turn.

She simply looked down and smiled inwardly.

”Yes... I’m sure Elizabeth would feel better after hearing what you said.” She mumbled.

...

Far from Larta City, in a spacious room where the air itself seemed heavier with power, another meeting was being held. But this was no war council. It was a gathering of predators—each one lounging in the opulence of High Lord Ursa’s domain.

Another pack of predators that choked the air with their presence alone.

The room was encased in glass, walls of crystal that looked out upon an impossible aquarium.

Beyond the transparent barrier, divinely aquatic creatures swam in seamless silence—things with too many eyes, too many fins, protruding bones, and huge bodies that twisted and coiled in ways that defied mortal biology.

All of them moved without ruckus, without disturbance.

As if they understood that a pack of predators was already gathered near them.

And disturbing the pack would only mean being devoured.

A water dragon, long enough to encircle the entire room, drifted past the glass. Its massive eye—golden and slit-pupiled—glanced at the people inside. Then it swam on, unhurried—as if their presence was too much for it to bear.

Diamantona sat awkwardly on a circular sofa, his large frame folded into the cushions like a man who had been placed there against his will. His eyes were distant, his posture stiff. He didn’t want to be here. He didn’t want to fight, but here he was.

Right now, the calm meeting was ongoing.

It was the meeting that would decide the fate of the Purgation Duel—one that could determine whether High Lord Ursa’s side crushed High Lord Rasha’s warriors into the past, and yet Dimantona couldn’t bring himself to care that much.

Just another day for him.

Battling to the death had become quite boring for him.

His mind was elsewhere. His body language said everything his mouth did not.

Across from him, lounging on a long, cream-colored sofa, sat a man clad in armor stitched with arctic fox fur. The white fur was a strange luxury in this warm, glass-encased room, but he wore it as if it were a second skin.

He looked like a creature of the cold—pale-eyed, still, his breath slow and measured.

He said nothing. He did not need to.

Just his presence alone was enough of a threat.

A reminder that stillness could be more dangerous than motion.

Beside him, a beautiful, slender woman in a dark blue dress reclined against the armrest. The slit in her gown ran all the way to her upper thigh, revealing a leg that was long and smooth and utterly confident. She played with a crystal glass filled with a glowing blue liquid, swirling it lazily—watching the light dance across the surface.

Her rosy cheeks suggested that she was drunk.

And the smile on her lips was soft and knowing, as if she found the entire proceedings amusing.

And across from them, seated on another identical sofa, his back to the aquarium glass, was High Lord Ursa himself. He was not lounging. He was working. Papers spread across the glass table before him— each one covered in dense script and diagrams, and he tended to them with the focused calm of a man who had already won.

Even though the Purgation Duel was approaching, the fate of his rival hanging in the balance, he showed no fear, no worry, no tension. Just the unflinching—methodical attention of a predator who had set his trap and was now simply waiting for the prey to step into it.

Nearby, there were two more sitting not too far away.

Listening but not involving themselves too much.

”New guy!” the only woman, High Millinar Angela, lifted her glass. ”Come here and drink with me. It is mandatory to entertain me, too, you know!”

”Stop harassing him,” the man with furred armour, High Millinar Vlaos, smacked his lips. ”And stop drinking. We’re going to battle soon enough.”

”Come on! None of you guys are any fun!” High Millinar Angela complained—placing down her glass on the glass table harshly. ”Aren’t any of you curious as to who this new guy was? He came out of thin air and was now chosen to represent High Lord Ursa. How did that happen? I’m curious!”

Just then, a sniffle crawled through the air.

All of the people inside the room paused, and then turned to look at Diamantona.

For the first time, he actually gave a reaction.

”I-I’m sorry. Don’t mind me.” Diamantona wiped a tear that drizzled down his cheek, and then looked to the aquarium, avoiding the others’ gazes. He didn’t want to be the center of attention, but after what High Millinar Angela said, he couldn’t help it.

Melancholy crept into his heart, and he couldn’t stop it.

”Are you serious...?” High Millinar Angela scoffed in utter disbelief, and then turned toward the others to see whether they were also caught off guard by this situation—before fixing her gaze on Diamantona again. ”Are you actually crying? Did I say something saddening? What is happening?’

”Are you that afraid?” High Millinar Vlaos asked.

”Sorry for disturbing.” Diamantona flashed a smile and then turned away again. ”Please ignore me. I’m quite sensitive sometimes.”

Not only the High Millinars, but High Lord Ursa also put down the papers and looked at him.

He placed down his reading glasses and then narrowed his eyes at Diamantona.

”What’s wrong?” He asked with a throaty voice. ”Why are you crying, Diamantona? Speak your mind.”

”No... It’s fine.” Diamantona refused to elaborate again. ”Don’t mind me.”

”I’m pretty sure we are in this together—so you should speak freely. Tell us what makes you sad.” High Lord Ursa urged even more. He was aware that Diamantona was a special individual, and he might see things that none of them could.

”I remembered something...” Diamantona finally answered—and his eyes glowed blue. Everyone saw the blue glow carved down a path like tears, and there was a power that shook the air that none of them could feel. ”Something tragic that happened in the past.”

”Remembered something tragic so suddenly?” High Lord Ursa frowned. ”How so?”

”I can’t help it. Seeing all of you act like this before battle—I couldn’t help but reminisce.” He wiped the tears that drizzled down again, and his brows furrowed in sadness. ”All of you acted exactly like dead men in my past, and I feel sad.”
