The Entry-plundering Demon Hunter

Chapter 139: Chapter 139: What Cousin? She’s Not My Cousin.

”Who takes the Martial Arts Exam and *isn’t* aiming for the job market in the New District?”

”Otherwise, what are we all training so desperately for?”

Lin Yi said with a light laugh.

”Exactly! The New District is truly a place where you can change your destiny!”

”Once the Martial Arts Exam is over, if we both get into a Martial Arts University, I’ll make my dad quit the city patrol and let my mom live a comfortable life at home!”

”I heard that as long as you’re accepted into a Martial Arts University, you get a monthly stipend!”

”And there are missions that give you rewards when you complete them!”

”I finally get it now—why so many people are fighting tooth and nail to squeeze into the New District. With perks like these, you’d have to be an idiot not to go...”

Wei Nan, lost in his vision of the future, sounded like he was about to laugh out loud through the phone.

”Then let’s give it our all. Let’s try to get in together and go live in the New District!” Lin Yi said with a smile.

”That’s the spirit! We go back to school next Monday, and the Martial Arts Exam is on Tuesday!”

”Oh, right. Yesterday, I heard from Zhou Tao that some incredible person popped up at our school? And they’re apparently in our grade? I was in secluded training in the mountains for over two months, so I’m completely out of the loop!”

”Do you know who that person is?”

Wei Nan’s question left Lin Yi a little baffled.

’An incredible person at school? Who?’ Lin Yi had never heard anything about it.

But when it came to being out of the loop, he was pretty much in the same boat as Wei Nan.

Ever since he’d stopped needing to go to school, he’d barely contacted any of his classmates.

He had only spoken to his head teacher on the phone a few times.

Liu Song was only concerned with his training.

He hadn’t heard anyone mention any of this...

”I don’t know. Haven’t heard anything. Didn’t Zhou Tao and the guys say who it was?”

”No. If they had, why would I be asking you? The thing is, even they aren’t sure!”

”Ah, forget it. Whoever it is, it is. What the hell does that have to do with me!”

”Anyway, my mind is completely focused on preparing for the Martial Arts Exam. Nailing it is all that matters!”

Lin Yi smiled at this.

Wei Nan’s enthusiasm for the Martial Arts Exam, and for getting into the New District, was now soaring. It was likely related to that post he had just read.

The truth was, his family wasn’t very well-off.

They were just an ordinary family.

His dad worked in the city patrol, an extremely dangerous job.

It used to be a little better.

The Martial Arts Police Station and the city patrol would only come out to patrol during the day.

At night, even when they were on duty, they stayed in the office.

Even if someone reported a crime, they’d wait until morning to dispatch officers to the scene.

But ever since the higher-ups decided to eradicate Blood Drop, the city patrol and the Martial Arts Police Station had gotten much busier.

Not only did they have to patrol at night, but they also had to help eliminate and apprehend the Blood Drop Believers.

The level of danger shot up instantly.

Wei Nan’s mother, on the other hand, ran a small supermarket below their apartment.

The income was mediocre, not very high.

But it was enough to cover their household expenses.

In the Old District, these living conditions put them in the top ten percent.

They had enough to eat, and if they tightened their belts, they could even save a little money.

But getting truly rich was another matter entirely.

Job opportunities in the Old District were scarce. The available jobs either forced you to risk your life or involved work that could get you killed at any moment.

It was just like the transport driver job Lin Dazhi had previously introduced to Lin Yi.

The pay was good—considered high-paying in the Old District.

But it was even more dangerous than Wei Nan’s father’s job.

Losing your life was a common occurrence.

That was precisely why the job paid more than others.

Besides those, there were other high-risk jobs.

The pay was decent, and dying was considered normal.

It was truly work where you traded your life for money.

”Oh, right. Your cousin is leaving tomorrow. Aren’t you going to come over and see her off?”

Lin Yi suddenly remembered that Tang Qinru was returning to the New District.

That’s when he said it to Wei Nan over the phone.

In response, Wei Nan fell silent for a moment.

”Cousin? What cousin?”

Lin Yi: ”???”

”You’ve even forgotten your own cousin? Think about the house I’m living in right now!”

”Oh, you’re talking about that? I have to come clean with you—she’s not my cousin. Wasn’t I already in secluded training back then? She went to my dad herself and had him tell me to say she was my cousin, just so she could rent the house to you!”

”Why else do you think it was so cheap?”

”Oh, by the way, she herself said that she’s *your* cousin, just one you’ve never met before...”

After Wei Nan finished talking,

Lin Yi felt like his brain was about to explode.

’Tang Qinru isn’t Wei Nan’s cousin? She’s my cousin instead?’

But in his memory, there was no mention of him ever having a cousin.

After hanging up the phone, Lin Yi stayed in his room alone, thinking for a long time.

He thought back to when he first met Tang Qinru and how well she had treated him.

At first, Lin Yi had found it all a bit baffling.

But slowly, he had gotten used to it.

Looking back, if they were truly just landlord and tenant, why would Tang Qinru have spent so much money to feed him Demon Beast Meat?

And it wasn’t just once or twice...

When he was injured, Tang Qinru had acted extremely anxious.

All sorts of memories flooded his mind.

A long while later...

Lin Yi came out of his room.

He found Tang Qinru’s packed suitcase in the living room.

”Sister Qingru, do you need any help?”

Lin Yi hurried over to ask.

Tang Qinru glanced back at him and shook her head. ”There wasn’t much to pack. I’m all done!”

”Oh, right, I was just about to find you. After I’m gone, you’ll be in charge of the house!”

”Just live here comfortably until you go to the New District!”

”However, I have one rule: you’re not allowed to bring people home, especially not any bad company. You absolutely cannot bring them back here!”

Tang Qinru said sternly.

Lin Yi nodded. ”Don’t worry, I don’t really have any friends!”

”Mm, also, the person who will be delivering your meals is named Deng Long. He works at the medical hall. I’ve already given him instructions; he’ll bring you food every day.”

”He’ll call you before he comes to make sure you’re home. Don’t mistake him for a scammer and curse him out!”

Lin Yi: ”...”

”Also, I’ll bring you a medical kit in a minute!”

”It has some medicine for bruises and sprains, as well as some medicinal pills!”

”I’ve written down the effects and everything clearly, so you can just read it yourself!”

”And one last thing... stay away from Chu Zhengxiong and his people!”

”Demon Hunting is their job, so what are you getting out of it? Have they given you any benefits? Are they paying you a salary? Stay away from them in the future. None of them are good people!”

Tang Qinru said, her face filled with anger.

Clearly, even after all this time, she still hadn’t forgiven Chu Zhengxiong and had directly labeled him as ’not a good person’.

By extension, everyone in the Demon Hunting Bureau was a bad person too.

Lin Yi nodded.

He completely agreed with what Tang Qinru said.

Chu Zhengxiong was great at making empty promises, and he would endlessly dangle the same one.

Take treating him to a meal, for example.

Ever since the incident at the container warehouse, he had been saying he would treat him to a meal.

But more than two months had passed, and he had yet to see that meal.

Most importantly, he was *still* making the promise...

”Sister Qingru, I want to ask you a question!”

”Hm? What’s the question? Go ahead and ask!”

Tang Qinru nodded.

After a moment, Lin Yi finally voiced the doubt in his heart.

”Sister Qingru, are you really Wei Nan’s cousin?”

Tang Qinru: ”...”

The living room instantly fell silent.

It seemed that even she hadn’t expected Lin Yi to ask this question at a time like this.

After a moment, she finally smiled and said, ”Xiaoyi, I was originally planning to tell you about all this after you got into a Martial Arts University and moved to the New District!”

”It’s not that I’m trying to hide things from you on purpose, it’s just that some things are overly complicated!”

”They can’t be explained in just a few words.

And I can’t give you an answer to that question right now!”

”But you have to believe me, I have no intention of harming you!”

”Wait until you get to the New District. I promise I’ll tell you everything, from beginning to end. Okay?”

Hearing this, Lin Yi nodded gently.

It was just as Tang Qinru herself had said.

Ever since he moved in, she had never shown any intention of harming him.

She had no other ulterior motives, either.

It was just pure kindness.

Untainted by any selfish intentions.

Tang Qinru walked up to Lin Yi and handed him a card.

It was a golden, metallic card.

Tang Qinru’s contact information was engraved on it.

”Before you come to the New District, give me a call to let me know. I’ll come pick you up and explain everything clearly, okay?”

Hearing this, Lin Yi took the card.

He glanced down at it, then nodded and said, ”Okay, Sister Qingru. I’ll see you in the New District!”
