The Divergence

The conference room was quiet.

Not because nobody had anything to say.

Quite the opposite.

Every person seated around the long table had spent the better part of the last eleven days discovering that nearly everything they had devoted their careers to understanding no longer behaved the way it was supposed to.

Morning sunlight poured through the broad windows overlooking the Institute grounds.

A projector quietly hummed near the front of the room.

Folders.

Laboratory reports.

Microscopic photographs.

Gene sequencing data.

Blood chemistry analyses.

They covered nearly every inch of the polished wooden table.

Dr. Helena Strauss looked around the room.

Five department heads.

Five exhausted scientists.

She opened the first folder before her.

”...Well.”

She smiled faintly.

”Let’s begin.”

Noah Kim leaned back in his chair.

Dark circles had settled beneath his eyes.

He rubbed one temple before letting out a tired laugh.

”...Vampire blood is impossible.”

Nobody laughed.

Mostly because they agreed.

Helena nodded once.

”I gathered as much from your preliminary report.”

”I was trying to be optimistic.”

Noah admitted.

”I’ve stopped.”

Sofia Alvarez cleared her throat.

”If we’re beginning with biology...”

She slid several pages toward the middle of the table.

”I’ve spent almost the entire last week inside the laboratory.”

She looked toward Helena.

”Vampire regeneration.”

”Werewolf regeneration.”

”Neither follows conventional biology.”

She tapped several microscope photographs.

”Based purely on cellular activity...”

She hesitated.

”...a vampire reduced to pieces wouldn’t necessarily be dead.”

Silence.

”The individual pieces remain active.”

She continued.

”The cells continue dividing.”

”They continue repairing.”

”They continue communicating somehow.”

She folded her hands together.

”I believe...”

She chose her words carefully.

”...that even extensive bodily destruction would not necessarily prevent regeneration.”

Noah nodded immediately.

”I agree.”

He opened another folder.

”The sunlight experiments support that conclusion.”

Helena looked up.

”Go on.”

”We exposed donated vampire blood.”

He flipped several pages.

”Skin samples.”

”Individual cells.”

He adjusted his glasses.

”Artificial heat produced no unusual effects.”

”Neither did temperature variation.”

He looked around the room.

”But...”

He pointed toward another chart.

”Sustained natural sunlight gradually destroys every sample.”

”It doesn’t happen immediately.”

”The degradation accumulates.”

He paused.

”If we extrapolate from the observed rate...”

He looked toward Sofia.

”...it supports field reports.”

Helena already knew where he was going.

”Eventually?”

Noah nodded.

”Eventually...”

”The biological activity ceases entirely.”

”The cells break down.”

”The blood loses every anomalous property.”

He quietly closed the folder.

”If the same mechanism applies to a complete vampire...”

He sighed.

”...prolonged sunlight exposure would eventually reduce the body to ash.”

Silence settled briefly.

Priya Raman spoke next.

”I arrived after the Second Divergence.”

She smiled apologetically.

”So my department has considerably less information.”

She reached for another folder.

”The wildlife emerging within the Diverged Lands...”

She slid several photographs onto the table.

”...appears remarkably ordinary.”

Forests.

Deer.

Boars.

Large cats.

Birds.

”The differences are primarily quantitative.”

”They’re larger.”

”Stronger.”

”More durable.”

”But genetically...”

She shrugged.

”...they remain extremely close to their ordinary counterparts.”

Marcus Havel chuckled.

”So they’re still animals.”

He leaned back.

”If one becomes a problem...”

He mimed raising a rifle.

”...you shoot it.”

Priya smiled politely.

”Generally.”

Marcus folded his arms.

”I’m much more interested in vampire clothing.”

Several heads turned toward him.

”I can accept a vampire healing.”

He shrugged.

”They’re alive.”

Before he could continue—

”They aren’t.”

Sofia interrupted.

Marcus blinked.

Noah nodded.

”Not alive.”

Marcus looked between them.

”...You know what I mean.”

”No.”

Sofia replied.

”I don’t.”

Marcus sighed dramatically.

”I mean...”

He searched for the words.

”...vampires are biological.”

”There.”

”Happy?”

Sofia nodded.

”Much.”

Marcus continued.

”Vampire dresses.”

He tapped one of his reports.

”I’ve personally reviewed nearly fifty eyewitness accounts.”

”They consistently describe damaged clothing...”

He paused.

”...repairing itself.”

He looked around the room.

”Fabric.”

He spread both hands.

”Shouldn’t heal.”

Nobody argued.

”It doesn’t matter what it’s woven from.”

Marcus continued.

”Textiles don’t regenerate.”

”They don’t knit themselves back together.”

”They certainly don’t repair tears.”

He sighed.

”Unfortunately...”

He looked toward Helena.

”...we don’t possess a single clothing sample.”

Helena nodded.

”We requested one.”

She smiled faintly.

”The response was polite.”

Marcus already knew.

”They declined.”

”They did.”

Helena folded her hands.

”I suspect obtaining a complete vampire dress for research...”

She smiled.

”...will remain difficult for quite some time.”

Nobody seemed surprised.

Sofia resumed speaking.

”Werewolves.”

She flipped to another section.

”They’re significantly closer to humans.”

”Structurally.”

She pointed toward several anatomical comparisons.

”The musculature is recognizable.”

”The skeletal structure remains fundamentally human.”

”The organs are largely comparable.”

She looked around the table.

”They simply possess...”

She smiled ruefully.

”...more.”

”Greater strength.”

”Greater speed.”

”Superior regeneration.”

She tapped another calculation.

”Based purely upon muscle fiber density and observed performance...”

She looked toward Helena.

”...a werewolf should be approximately six times stronger than an average human.”

Noah laughed quietly.

”And then...”

He opened another report.

”...there are vampires.”

He shook his head.

”They’re somehow stronger.”

”And faster.”

”Volunteer testing conducted at our sister facilities consistently supports it.”

He looked toward Sofia.

”Their regenerative capacity also exceeds that of werewolves.”

He turned another page.

”The durability difference is especially interesting.”

Helena looked interested.

”Explain.”

”If a human punches a werewolf...”

He shrugged.

”...the werewolf feels it.”

”If a human punches another human...”

”Likewise.”

He smiled faintly.

”If a human punches a vampire...”

He paused.

”...the vampire is barely affected.”

A few quiet chuckles spread around the table.

”The tissue behaves differently.”

He continued.

”Impacts disperse.”

”They’re absorbed.”

”The body appears designed to tolerate tremendous blunt force.”

Priya considered that.

”Perhaps...”

She spoke thoughtfully.

”...it’s similar to the new wildlife.”

”The larger animals also demonstrate increased durability.”

Sofia immediately shook her head.

”I don’t believe so.”

She looked toward Priya.

”The new animals became larger.”

”The additional durability accompanies increased mass.”

She tapped another page.

”Vampires did the opposite.”

She looked around the room.

”They’re smaller.”

”Approximately five feet tall.”

”Minimal visible musculature.”

She spread several anatomical diagrams across the table.

”By every conventional expectation...”

”They should be physically weaker than humans.”

She looked directly at Helena.

”They’re approximately eight times stronger instead.”

Silence.

She continued.

”I also completed ultraviolet testing.”

Helena nodded.

”I read your preliminary findings.”

”I repeated them.”

Sofia replied.

”Multiple wavelengths.”

”Medical UV.”

”Industrial UV.”

”Laboratory lamps.”

She shook her head.

”No measurable effect.”

”On blood.”

”On skin.”

”On isolated cells.”

She folded her arms.

”Ultraviolet radiation does absolutely nothing.”

The room became quiet.

”Sustained natural sunlight...”

She continued.

”...does.”

She looked around.

”Therefore...”

She smiled tiredly.

”...whatever harms vampires...”

”...isn’t ultraviolet light.”

”It’s something unique to sunlight itself.”

Nobody had an explanation.

Helena eventually broke the silence.

”Has anyone uncovered anything substantially new?”

Marcus immediately raised one hand.

”No.”

Everyone looked at him.

”My department lacks samples.”

He shrugged.

”Self-repairing fabric remains theoretical until someone lets me examine it.”

Helena made a note.

Noah smiled.

”I have something.”

He slid another report toward her.

”I left donated vampire blood exposed to open air.”

”For contamination?”

Helena asked.

”For curiosity.”

He admitted.

”It should’ve clotted.”

”It didn’t.”

”It should’ve died.”

”It didn’t.”

He leaned forward.

”Forty-eight hours.”

”It remained biologically active.”

Sofia nodded.

”My cellular cultures support that.”

She opened another folder.

”Some of my samples are nearly a week old.”

”They’re still active.”

”No meaningful decline.”

Priya frowned thoughtfully.

”...Does that imply vampire cells can survive indefinitely while separated from the body?”

Sofia considered the question.

”It certainly suggests prolonged survival.”

She answered carefully.

”There is...”

She pointed toward one graph.

”...a measurable reduction in activity.”

”But it’s surprisingly small.”

She looked thoughtful.

”The regeneration appears capable of sustaining itself for an extraordinarily long period.”

Noah leaned back again.

”Another interesting observation.”

He smiled tiredly.

”Vampires average approximately fifteen degrees colder than humans.”

Helena nodded.

”Yes.”

”Their blood shouldn’t work.”

He said simply.

”At that temperature...”

”It should become significantly more viscous.”

”It doesn’t.”

He laughed.

”The viscosity remains remarkably close to human blood.”

Sofia added quietly,

”And despite appearing almost black...”

She glanced around the room.

”...it’s incredibly sweet.”

Marcus looked up.

”You tasted it?”

”I did.”

She answered without embarrassment.

”We all did.”

Noah nodded.

”It was medically necessary.”

Helena smiled slightly.

”So you claimed.”

”It promoted rapid cellular regeneration.”

Sofia continued.

”And...”

She hesitated.

”...produced an unmistakable sense of euphoria.”

Silence.

Helena sighed.

”I’m aware.”

She folded her hands.

”It has not been released publicly.”

Noah frowned.

”I think the longer we wait...”

”...the more difficult integration becomes.”

Helena looked toward him.

He continued.

”A single donated blood bag...”

He tapped the table.

”...is worth more than gold.”

Nobody disagreed.

”Not metaphorically.”

He clarified.

”Literally.”

He looked around.

”It could save someone’s life.”

”Traumatic injuries.”

”Organ failure.”

”Chronic illness.”

”Infections.”

He paused.

”We’re still testing.”

”But...”

He smiled almost disbelievingly.

”...the list of things vampire blood appears capable of treating is absurd.”

Marcus leaned forward.

”...Aren’t we placing too much faith in a finite resource?”

Sofia answered before Noah could.

”I don’t believe it’s finite.”

Marcus blinked.

She explained.

”Vampire hematopoiesis appears extraordinarily efficient.”

”So long as a vampire continues consuming blood...”

She shrugged.

”...I doubt daily donations would meaningfully deplete them.”

Priya quietly spoke.

”The biology isn’t the only concern.”

Everyone looked toward her.

”They’re people.”

She folded her hands.

”If someone’s child develops an incurable disease...”

”They may beg a vampire.”

She looked around the table.

”And if the vampire refuses?”

Silence.

”They have every right to refuse.”

She continued.

”It’s their blood.”

”Their body.”

”Their decision.”

She looked down briefly.

”But...”

She sighed.

”The family watching someone die...”

”...is unlikely to see it that way.”

The room became noticeably quieter.

Helena nodded slowly.

”We’ve already discussed incentive programs.”

She opened another folder.

”Financial compensation.”

”Long-term medical agreements.”

”Government contracts.”

She looked toward Noah.

”If vampire blood proves as effective as current evidence suggests...”

She paused.

”...organ transplantation may change forever.”

Noah gave a tired laugh.

”Medicine...”

He shook his head.

”...has almost become redundant in under two weeks.”

Everyone looked toward him.

”I’m exaggerating.”

He admitted.

”But only slightly.”

He spread his hands.

”We’ve barely begun studying vampire blood.”

”And already...”

He smiled in disbelief.

”...it appears capable of accomplishing more than it cannot.”

Silence lingered.

Finally...

Helena closed the folder before her.

”Compile everything.”

She looked around the table.

”I’ll prepare a report for President Everson.”

Pens immediately began moving.

Marcus scratched the back of his head.

”...Do I have to submit one too?”

Helena looked at him.

Her expression remained perfectly calm.

”Yes.”

Marcus sighed dramatically.

”But I barely have anything.”

”Then write that.”

Helena replied.

”Every branch submits findings.”

”Every day.”

Marcus groaned quietly as the others smiled, and throughout the Institute, scientists returned to their own laboratories.

Each one of them carrying the unsettling realization that the more they learned about vampires, werewolves, and the Divergences, the less the world resembled the one science had once so confidently explained.

───

Ophelia sat quietly on the second story of the church.

The narrow balcony overlooked the sanctuary below, hidden partially behind carved wooden railings and long shadows cast by the tall gothic windows.

Her empty crimson eyes moved across the congregation.

Rows of people sat beneath her.

Men.

Women.

Children.

Families pressed together upon polished wooden pews, listening with rapt attention as the pastor stood at the pulpit.

Ophelia rested one hand lightly against the railing.

Her dark purple hair had been partially braided beside each pointed ear before falling freely down her back.

Thick.

Glossy.

Impossibly long.

It pooled around her in dark violet waves, resembling the extravagant hair she’d seen on other vampires in photographs and videos since the First Divergence.

She had yet to meet one herself.

An unfortunate circumstance.

Had Ophelia encountered another vampire during her journey, she doubted she would still be sitting alone in the shadows of an unfamiliar church.

Vampires sought one another.

She could feel that much without anyone needing to explain it.

The differences between them appeared to be little things.

A shade of color.

A scent.

A style of dress.

The precise shape of a smile.

Otherwise...

They had all emerged from the same impossible mold.

Petite.

Beautiful.

Feminine.

Blood-eyed.

Apparently...

Devilish.

”...And they walk among us now.”

The pastor’s voice carried effortlessly through the sanctuary.

Ophelia slowly returned her attention to him.

He stood beneath a carved wooden cross, one hand resting against an open book while the other rose dramatically toward the congregation.

”Creatures wearing the shape of mankind.”

Ophelia glanced down at herself.

A fitted black bodice.

Puffed sleeves.

A long skirt.

Pale hands folded delicately before her.

”...Close enough.”

She murmured.

No one below heard her.

”They possess the faces of beautiful women.”

The pastor continued.

”Yet within them lies hunger.”

Ophelia raised one eyebrow.

That part, at least, was accurate.

”A hunger not merely for blood...”

His expression tightened.

”...but for the souls of the faithful.”

Ophelia’s eyebrow rose higher.

Ah.

There it was.

She’d wondered how long it would take him to become creative.

”They are devils with eyes of blood.”

He struck the pulpit with one hand.

Several people flinched.

”Sent among us as a test.”

Ophelia tilted her head.

A test.

That explanation had become remarkably popular.

Everything inconvenient was apparently a test.

Disease.

War.

Famine.

Personal tragedy.

Now vampires.

It was a useful answer.

Impossible to disprove.

Conveniently vague.

And flattering to whoever believed it.

After all...

A test implied someone considered them important enough to examine.

Her gaze drifted over the congregation again.

A few people nodded solemnly.

Others whispered agreement.

One woman held the hand of the young boy beside her.

Ophelia wondered...

How many faithful believers had awakened as vampires on the day of the First Divergence?

There had to be many.

Somewhere between one million three hundred thousand and one million four hundred thousand vampires had appeared around the world.

Surely not every one of them had been an atheist.

Some must have prayed every night.

Attended church every week.

Read scripture.

Believed sincerely.

Then darkness had swallowed the world...

And they’d awakened as the very creatures this pastor now described as devils.

Would those believers consider themselves monsters?

Ophelia doubted it.

Very much.

Not merely because people were talented at making exceptions for themselves.

Vampires couldn’t reject what they had become.

Nor could they look at another vampire and truly see something abhorrent.

The instinctive closeness between their kind ran too deeply for that.

A newly transformed believer might panic.

Might question everything.

Might struggle to reconcile doctrine with reality.

But she would not despise herself for being a vampire.

And if she encountered another...

She would not cast that vampire aside either.

More likely, she would reinterpret what she had believed.

Perhaps vampirism had been a divine gift rather than a curse.

Perhaps vampires had been chosen.

Perhaps humanity had misunderstood what they represented.

Ophelia’s lips curved into a faint smile.

Human beings possessed an extraordinary talent for rebuilding their moral systems whenever reality made the old ones inconvenient.

She had seen the attention surrounding Isolde.

A vampire attacked by Hunters who had come expecting to destroy a monster.

Instead, Isolde had fought back.

Publicly.

Decisively.

And with considerably more restraint than Ophelia suspected she herself would’ve shown.

Ophelia wished she’d been there.

Not to help.

Isolde clearly hadn’t needed any.

She merely would’ve enjoyed cheering.

Perhaps applauding whenever one of the Hunters discovered that bravery and good judgment weren’t the same thing.

Maybe offering commentary from somewhere nearby.

No, that weapon won’t work either.

Yes, she noticed you.

No, running now probably won’t save your dignity.

It would’ve been entertaining.

Instead...

She was here.

Alone on a darkened balcony, listening to a man explain her existence with remarkable confidence despite having never spoken to her kind.

”Their temptation must be resisted.”

The pastor declared.

”Their beauty is a weapon.”

Ophelia glanced toward one of the dark windows.

Her reflection barely appeared against the glass.

Long purple hair.

Solid red eyes.

Pointed ears.

Flawless pale skin.

”...Fair.”

She whispered.

She was beautiful.

She didn’t consider that arrogance.

Arrogance required exaggeration.

”Do not invite them into your homes.”

The pastor continued.

”Do not accept their promises.”

”Do not be deceived by their gentle voices.”

Ophelia lightly touched her throat.

She’d never promised anyone anything.

Apparently she’d been negligent in her duties as a temptress.

Perhaps there was a handbook she’d failed to receive.

She returned her attention to the people below.

Despite her sarcasm...

A faint sense of pity stirred within her.

Not anger.

Not truly.

Pity.

She understood religion.

Or at least...

Why people wanted it.

Life was frightening.

Meaningless events occurred constantly.

Good people suffered.

Cruel people prospered.

Children died.

Nations collapsed.

No one knew what happened after death.

Religion offered shape to uncertainty.

A beginning.

An ending.

A reason.

Purpose.

Ophelia would never confidently declare that God didn’t exist.

Doing so would require evidence she didn’t possess.

The universe had already rewritten itself twice in less than two weeks.

Dismissing the possibility of a god now seemed particularly arrogant.

However...

She could confidently say one thing.

Before becoming a vampire...

She had been a person.

Not a demon.

Not an ancient evil.

Not something summoned from Hell.

A person.

She remembered being human.

Remembered meals.

Rain.

Exhaustion.

Fear.

The irritating sound of her alarm each morning.

She remembered the life she’d possessed before the First Divergence replaced it with another.

No sermon could erase that.

No pastor could explain her own memories better than she could.

Ophelia had migrated into this small country only days earlier.

”Migrated” sounded more dignified than ”escaped across the border while being shot at.”

She preferred it.

Her country of origin had attempted to arrest her soon after the First Divergence.

In fairness...

The soldiers had only been following orders.

That was what people always said afterward.

It remained true often enough to be inconvenient.

Most of them hadn’t hated her personally.

They’d been frightened.

Confused.

Ordered to restrain something no one understood.

Ophelia hadn’t taken it personally.

At least...

Not until they continued pursuing her.

There was a point where persistence became insulting.

She’d tried warning them.

Then she’d tried leaving.

Then they’d attempted to block the road during the daytime.

That had been the end of her patience.

Some soldiers died.

Ophelia didn’t feel particularly proud of it.

Nor did she feel guilty enough to lie to herself.

She hadn’t been gentle.

If she had allowed pursuit to continue without consequence...

They would’ve plagued her throughout the journey to the border.

Daylight would’ve become a weapon.

Not merely against her.

Against every vampire attempting to leave the country.

So she’d demonstrated the price.

People often became much more reasonable once orders began costing lives.

Cruel?

Perhaps.

Effective?

Certainly.

The survivors had stopped following her.

Now...

She sat inside a church in another country, listening to a pastor call her a servant of Hell.

Progress.

”The Second Divergence must not distract us from the first test placed before humanity.”

The pastor said.

Ophelia’s attention sharpened.

Interesting.

He had finally acknowledged it.

She leaned forward slightly.

”The Earth itself may have changed...”

He continued.

”But truth has not.”

Ophelia almost raised her hand.

She genuinely wanted to ask.

What did he think of the Second Divergence?

Had Hell doubled the planet’s radius?

Had Satan placed forests between cities?

Were the new mountains also temptations?

Were roads breaking apart a spiritual metaphor?

And the castles?

What precise theological role did conveniently abandoned gothic architecture serve?

Surely...

He had an answer.

Men who spoke this confidently always did.

Ophelia’s lips parted.

Then closed.

She thought better of it.

Not because she feared him.

Or anyone below.

If the entire congregation turned violent, she could leave before most of them managed to stand.

But...

She enjoyed arguing.

Perhaps too much.

And in the current atmosphere...

A question wouldn’t remain a question.

Someone would recognize her eyes.

Then her ears.

Someone would scream.

Others would panic.

The pastor would interpret her presence as divine validation of his sermon.

It would undoubtedly escalate.

Ophelia preferred verbal cruelty.

Physical conflict became repetitive remarkably quickly.

She rose smoothly from her seat.

The faint scent of orchids and cinnamon shifted with her.

Her long dark purple hair swayed behind her as she stepped away from the railing.

Her boots made almost no sound against the thin carpet.

Below...

The sermon continued.

”They hide among ordinary people.”

Ophelia paused in the shadows.

Her expression became dry.

”...Poorly.”

Solid crimson eyes were not particularly subtle.

Neither were pointed ears.

Or five feet of pristine gothic elegance carrying enough hair to blanket a small bed.

Still...

No one looked upward.

They were too focused on the imagined monsters described from the pulpit to notice the real vampire standing above them.

That seemed appropriate somehow.

People often preferred fears they could define.

The truth had an unfortunate habit of being more complicated.

Ophelia moved toward the balcony exit.

She placed one hand against the old wooden door before glancing back one final time.

The congregation remained attentive.

Faithful.

Afraid.

Being told exactly what their fear meant by someone equally frightened but considerably louder.

Her expression softened for only a moment.

”I hope none of you become vampires.”

She whispered.

Not because vampirism was a curse.

She rather liked being one.

But because she suspected many of them would find the contradiction unbearable.

They would be forced to question everything they’d accepted.

Not because they could reject their new kind.

They couldn’t.

That certainty would become part of them as naturally as hunger, crimson eyes, and the instinctive desire to seek other vampires.

Instead, they would need to decide which belief had been wrong.

That vampires were demons...

Or that they were among the damned.

And since they would no longer be capable of truly believing the latter...

The doctrine would have to bend.

Ophelia already knew people often found bending their beliefs considerably easier than admitting they’d spent years condemning something they never understood.

She opened the door.

A dim corridor waited beyond it.

Before stepping through, she heard the pastor raise his voice once more.

”Remain vigilant!”

Ophelia glanced over her shoulder.

Her empty red eyes reflected light in the darkness.

”Excellent advice.”

She murmured.

Then she slipped from the balcony, back into the shadows, unbeknownst to those below.

Ophelia,
