The Divergence

Ethan Vale lay awake in bed with one arm folded beneath his head and the other resting over his stomach, staring into the dim gray light gathering across the ceiling.

He had not slept.

Not properly.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the same empty streets from the night before.

The same sidewalks. The same parking lots. The same neon signs reflecting against wet pavement. The same complete absence of anything useful.

No vampires.

Not one.

He had driven for hours.

He had circled the districts where sightings had once been common.

He had passed the mall twice, slowed near the damaged blood clinic, lingered outside bars, hospitals, shelters, and every place where frightened people might have gathered.

Nothing.

Oakridge had swallowed them.

By the time he returned home, the sky had already begun lightening at the edges, and the useless footage on his camera consisted mostly of storefronts, passing cars, and people glancing suspiciously at him when he drove by too slowly.

Ethan clenched his jaw.

The failure sat inside his chest like pressure.

He could feel it building with every hour.

His phone rested beside him on the mattress, screen dark, but he did not need to look at it to imagine what waited there.

The flattened analytics. The slowing engagement. The comments asking why he had nothing new to say.

The mockery from people who had decided the vampires were victims rather than threats.

He hated that word.

Victims.

Everyone used it so easily.

As though becoming a blood-drinking creature absolved someone of everything they might do afterward.

As though beauty and fear excused danger.

As though the entire world should simply trust them because they had not torn anyone apart for a few days.

Ethan turned onto his side and stared at the phone.

The anxiety tightened.

He could not wait for a vampire to appear.

He could not rely on them to give him something useful.

Maybe he had been thinking about it the wrong way.

He had been searching for an incident.

What if he did not need to find one?

His breathing slowed.

A thought emerged quietly, almost cautiously at first.

If vampires were not doing anything, then something could still be connected to them.

People did not need proof immediately.

They needed a story.

A possibility.

A reason to believe what they already feared.

Ethan sat up.

The mattress creaked beneath him as he reached for his phone. He unlocked it, opened a browser, and began searching through the forums he had bookmarked over the past several days.

Some were public.

Some required invitation links.

Some pretended to be discussion boards for public safety while openly calling for vampires to be hunted, imprisoned, or exterminated.

Ethan had never posted much in those spaces.

He read.

He watched.

He learned which users were loud, which were angry, and which seemed desperate to prove their commitment to the cause.

It did not take long to find the thread he wanted.

The title was written in capital letters.

STOP DEFENDING THEM.

The replies beneath it poured down the screen.

They are predators.

Every clinic is feeding them.

The government is helping them replace us.

Kill them before they kill us.

One person suggested burning every known vampire residence. Another demanded public executions.

Someone else wrote several paragraphs about how vampires had to be sterilized, despite no one even knowing whether vampires could reproduce.

Ethan scrolled slowly.

He did not flinch at the language.

It was useful.

Fear stripped away hesitation.

Anger made people feel righteous.

A username appeared again and again.

WakeOakridge.

The woman behind it had spent the past eight days attacking anyone who expressed sympathy toward vampires.

She responded within minutes to nearly every post. She accused people of being manipulated, compromised, or seduced by appearances.

She was exactly what he needed.

Ethan opened a private message window.

For a moment, he simply stared at the empty box.

Then he began typing.

You have been one of the only people here willing to say what needs to be said.

He sent it.

The response came less than a minute later.

Finally, someone with sense.

Ethan smiled.

He had expected that.

He typed again.

I am tired of watching these monsters hide while everyone starts pretending they are harmless.

Three dots appeared almost instantly.

Same. People are already forgetting what they are.

Ethan shifted higher against the headboard.

Exactly. Someone needs to put them back in their place.

The woman replied with a string of agreement, then asked what he had in mind.

Ethan paused.

He chose his next words carefully.

He could not sound too eager.

Too direct.

He needed her to believe the idea belonged to both of them.

Something that forces people to remember they are dangerous.

Her response took longer this time.

Like what?

Ethan looked toward the curtained window.

The room had brightened slightly. Morning crept into the apartment, dull and colorless, while the city outside continued waking without knowing what he was planning.

He typed.

Someone causes trouble. Something public. Then says the vampires made them do it.

The typing indicator appeared.

Disappeared.

Returned.

Ethan waited.

For the first time since he contacted her, the woman did not answer immediately.

He could imagine her thinking.

Not doubting vampires.

Not really.

Only considering the scale of what he was suggesting.

Her next message came after nearly a full minute.

You mean like saying they were controlled?

Ethan’s mouth curved upward.

Exactly.

Another pause followed.

Can vampires even do that?

Ethan’s fingers hovered over the screen.

The honest answer was that he did not know.

No one knew.

That was the advantage.

He typed.

It does not matter whether it is true.

He sent another message before she could reply.

It matters whether people believe it.

The woman took longer to answer this time.

Ethan watched the typing indicator blink on and off.

Finally, she wrote:

People already think they can charm humans.

Ethan nodded to himself.

There it was.

The bridge.

He began typing more quickly now.

Then it will not sound impossible. If enough people say the same thing, officials will have to investigate.

News outlets will repeat the accusation. People will ask what else vampires can do.

The response came quickly.

And every vampire supporter will look stupid.

Exactly.

Ethan leaned back.

The anxiety that had clawed at him all night began loosening.

This could work.

It did not need to be perfect.

It only needed to create doubt.

Doubt spread faster than evidence.

Once people believed vampires might be able to control minds, every strange action could be blamed on them.

Every crime. Every attack. Every disappearance. Even denials would make them look suspicious.

He could build weeks of content from that alone.

The woman sent another message.

I know a few people who are serious.

Ethan’s attention sharpened.

How serious?

Serious enough to act.

He did not ask for names.

He did not want them.

Names created connections.

Connections created trails.

He had already taken precautions. The account he was using had no link to his public identity.

The name attached to it was false. The email was disposable. Nothing obvious tied Ethan Vale to the messages.

He was going to be a hero.

Heroes did not leave careless fingerprints behind.

He typed:

You can bring others in, but everyone has to understand one thing.

What?

Whatever happens, they keep saying vampires made them do it.

The answer arrived almost immediately.

Even if questioned?

Especially if questioned.

Ethan watched the screen.

The woman did not respond for several seconds.

Then:

What if someone backs out?

Then do not involve them.

That sounded clean.

Simple.

He liked how simple it looked written down.

The woman replied:

I can find people who will not.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

He could feel the story forming already.

Multiple people.

Matching claims.

Authorities confused.

Public fear reignited.

His audience returning.

Commentators arguing.

News panels asking whether vampires possessed abilities the government had concealed.

It would not even matter if officials denied it. Denials could be framed as a cover-up.

He imagined himself sitting beneath studio lights, expression grave, explaining that he had warned people from the beginning.

He imagined hosts introducing him as an expert.

He imagined his follower count surging again.

The thought steadied him.

The woman sent another message.

How much are we talking about?

Ethan frowned.

He did not want to know.

He typed carefully.

Enough that people notice. Not enough that the point gets lost.

The response came back:

That is vague.

It has to be. You know your people better than I do.

He paused, then added:

The message matters more than the damage.

That made him feel better.

It sounded responsible.

Measured.

As though he were trying to prevent excess rather than manufacture panic.

The woman appeared satisfied.

I can work with that.

Ethan’s fingers moved again.

And remember, no one says they chose to do it. They were influenced. Controlled. Compelled. Whatever wording sounds natural.

This time, she challenged him.

You sound like you have thought about this before.

Ethan’s stomach tightened.

He forced himself not to react.

He typed:

I have thought about what happens if we keep waiting for them to show their true nature.

The typing indicator appeared.

Then:

Fair.

His shoulders relaxed.

She had accepted it.

People like her wanted permission more than instruction. They wanted someone to tell them their hatred had purpose.

Once that purpose existed, they supplied the rest themselves.

Ethan did not need to guide every detail.

He only needed to point.

The woman sent another message.

Some people could get hurt.

Ethan stared at the words.

For a brief moment, the room seemed quieter.

He pictured strangers caught in whatever she arranged.

He pictured police arriving.

He pictured ambulances.

The image lasted only a second before another thought replaced it.

Attention.

Headlines.

Fear.

A renewed audience.

He typed:

That is unfortunate.

Then, after a pause:

But people are already in danger. They just do not know it yet.

The woman replied almost immediately.

Exactly.

Her next messages came faster.

If a few people get hurt now, more people might wake up before the vampires hurt thousands.

Ethan read the sentence twice.

It was better than anything he had written.

Cleaner.

More dramatic.

She continued.

People are asleep. They see pretty faces and think that means safe.

Another message followed.

We are waking them up.

Ethan smiled.

He let his head rest against the wall behind the bed.

The knot inside his chest had finally loosened.

He was no longer helpless.

No longer waiting.

He had a direction again.

He typed:

I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

The woman replied:

You will know when it happens.

Ethan stared at that message for several seconds before locking the phone and setting it beside him.

The room had grown brighter.

Outside, cars moved along the street below. Somewhere in the building, a shower started. A door closed. Pipes rattled faintly in the wall.

Ordinary morning sounds.

Ethan slid down beneath the blankets again, though sleep no longer felt urgent.

His mind raced instead.

He imagined the first report.

The first accusation.

The first frightened interview.

He imagined people searching for his old videos and realizing he had warned them.

He imagined his name moving across screens throughout Oakridge and beyond.

Not as an unknown reporter.

Not as a desperate man chasing a story.

As someone who had seen the truth before anyone else.

A champion of humanity.

A light pointed into the darkness.

Ethan closed his eyes, smiling faintly as exhaustion finally began pulling at him.

The vampires had vanished.

That no longer mattered.

Soon, people would be talking about them again.
