The waiting area had settled into a quieter rhythm.

Officers moved between desks carrying folders and cups of coffee.

Telephones rang.

Printers hummed somewhere deeper inside the building.

The earlier shouting had faded into little more than occasional muffled voices beyond closed doors.

Marcus had long since fallen asleep.

Adelaide sat with her back against the wall, one leg stretched out and the other bent comfortably.

Marcus lay across the seats beside her with his head resting on her lap.

One of Adelaide’s hands moved through his hair with slow, absent strokes.

Every so often she gently patted the top of his head.

His breathing never changed.

The front doors opened.

Several officers instinctively looked toward the entrance.

Brigadier General Violetta stepped inside.

Her polished shoes carried her forward with soft, measured steps.

She wore the same elegant black gothic attire as always, every detail as immaculate as the rest of her appearance.

Captain Owen Hayes followed a respectful pace behind.

The lobby grew just a little quieter.

Violetta’s crimson eyes swept across the waiting area.

She immediately spotted the familiar faces.

A gentle smile appeared.

”Good evening.”

”Evening.”

Lavinia answered first without looking up.

Gwendolyn smiled brightly.

”Hi, Violetta.”

Rosaline lifted a hand.

Cordelia inclined her head politely.

”General.”

Evelyn offered a shy smile.

Valerie gave a casual wave.

Evangeline stood a little straighter.

Adelaide looked over from Marcus only briefly before smiling.

”Good evening.”

Violetta’s gaze rested on the sleeping boy.

”I’m glad he’s safe.”

”So am I.”

Adelaide looked back down at Marcus.

Violetta nodded once.

”I won’t interrupt.”

She turned toward the front desk.

”I need to speak with Chief Mercer.”

Without another word, she continued across the lobby.

Captain Hayes followed.

An officer opened the secured door for them.

Both disappeared into the corridor beyond.

The door clicked shut.

Valerie watched it for another second.

Then smiled.

”Violetta’s here to clean up our messes.”

Rosaline scoffed.

”I haven’t made any messes.”

”You exist.”

”That hardly counts.”

Valerie tilted her head.

”You’ve known Lavinia for days.”

Rosaline looked toward her.

”...Fair point.”

Lavinia looked up from the folded brochure she’d discovered somewhere in the lobby.

She blinked.

”What?”

Valerie pointed at her.

”You.”

Lavinia slowly looked around the waiting area as though searching for whoever Valerie could possibly mean.

Finding nobody, she returned to the brochure.

”I remain unconvinced.”

Rosaline laughed softly.

”What are you reading?”

”’Oakridge Community Safety.’”

Lavinia held up the brochure.

”They have very nice parks.”

She turned another page.

”And maps.”

Valerie leaned over.

”That’s what you’re reading?”

”There are also recommended walking routes.”

”You don’t even live here.”

”I appreciate organization.”

Celestine glanced at the brochure.

”They usually print those well.”

Lavinia nodded.

”They’ve used good paper.”

Valerie looked toward the ceiling.

”I should’ve expected that.”

Across the waiting area, Adelaide continued gently stroking Marcus’ hair.

He shifted slightly in his sleep before settling closer against her.

Her hand never stopped moving.

Evangeline watched them.

”They’re interesting.”

Everyone looked toward her.

She smiled.

”I can’t wait to spend lots of nights with all of you.”

Her gaze drifted around the group.

”You’re all so interesting.”

Rosaline smiled.

”I’ll take that as a compliment.”

”It was.”

Evangeline folded her arms.

”I’ve spent days around scientists.”

Her nose wrinkled.

”They asked very boring questions.”

Lavinia looked up.

”What sort?”

”’Can you repeat that?’”

”’How does this feel?’”

”’Can you do that again?’”

She sighed.

”I wanted to ask whether any of them had hobbies.”

Valerie snorted.

”They probably did.”

”They hid them remarkably well.”

Evelyn smiled.

”I think you’d enjoy our games.”

Evangeline tilted her head.

”Our games?”

Evelyn nodded.

”The ones we’ve been playing.”

Gwendolyn grinned.

”They’re really fun.”

Rosaline laughed.

”We’ve only played once.”

”Twice if we’re counting tag.”

Lavinia added.

”I count tag.”

”So do I.”

Gwendolyn agreed immediately.

Evangeline’s smile widened.

”I think I’d enjoy those.”

”I think so too.”

Evelyn said softly.

Comfortable silence settled over the group.

A telephone rang.

Someone laughed from another office.

A printer started again.

Lavinia slowly looked up from the brochure.

Her eyes traveled around the waiting area.

Valerie.

Rosaline.

Gwendolyn.

Cordelia.

Celestine.

Evelyn.

Evangeline.

Adelaide.

Nine vampires.

She considered them for a moment.

Then announced confidently,

”I’ll be winning the next game.”

She lowered her gaze and turned another page.

Valerie answered first.

”No.”

”I appreciate your optimism.”

Lavinia replied.

”It’s not optimism.”

Valerie folded her arms.

”It’s experience.”

Rosaline hummed.

”You were beaten up rather thoroughly.”

”I was collecting information.”

”You spent most of the game on the ground.”

”I collected excellent information.”

Adelaide looked over without disturbing Marcus.

”You’re too reckless.”

”I am not.”

”You charged everyone.”

”It felt correct.”

”It wasn’t.”

Valerie said.

Lavinia pointed vaguely with the brochure.

”I’ve reflected.”

”And?”

”I’ll charge more strategically.”

Valerie pinched the bridge of her nose.

”That wasn’t the lesson.”

”It was my lesson.”

Gwendolyn giggled.

Even Cordelia smiled faintly.

Celestine watched Lavinia for a quiet moment.

She thought Lavinia had an unusual gift for remaining confident regardless of overwhelming evidence.

It was strangely admirable.

”I think...”

Celestine said softly.

”...you’ll probably get beaten up again.”

Lavinia looked at her with complete betrayal.

”You too?”

Celestine nodded once.

”I’ve seen enough to think so.”

Lavinia sighed dramatically.

”My own harem doubts me.”

Eight pairs of crimson eyes turned toward her.

Valerie reached over and lightly smacked the back of her head.

”Ow.”

Lavinia rubbed the spot.

”I was expressing vulnerability.”

”You were being Lavinia.”

”I still think that’s a vulnerable state.”

Another round of laughter spread through the waiting area.

Even Adelaide smiled as she continued gently patting Marcus’ head.

───

Chief Daniel Mercer’s office was quieter than the rest of the station.

The phones beyond the closed door could still be heard.

So could footsteps passing through the corridor, the muted opening and closing of secured doors, and the occasional voice carrying from the front desk.

None of it was loud.

Not to a human.

To Violetta, the entire building remained alive with sound.

The quiet scrape of paper against a desk.

A pen clicking in an office two rooms away.

The steady rhythm of Daniel Mercer’s heart.

She sat across from him with her hands resting neatly in her lap.

Her posture remained straight without appearing rigid.

A faint smile rested on her lips.

Her empty red eyes did not smile with them.

Daniel leaned back in his chair and released a long sigh.

He looked exhausted.

Not merely tired.

Exhausted in the way people became when every answer created three additional problems.

Several folders sat open across his desk.

A tablet rested beside them, its screen filled with a list of reports.

Daniel tapped one finger against the edge of the nearest folder.

“There’s been a string of incidents.”

Violetta waited.

Daniel glanced toward the closed office door before looking back at her.

“People committing crimes.”

He paused.

“Humans.”

Violetta’s faint smile remained.

“I assumed as much.”

“I thought I should clarify.”

“Given the current atmosphere, I understand.”

Daniel rubbed one hand across his face.

“Assault.”

He gestured toward one folder.

“Robbery.”

Another.

“Attempted arson.”

His hand moved toward the tablet.

“One man attacked his neighbor with a tire iron. Another drove through the front of a convenience store.”

Violetta’s gaze shifted briefly toward the reports.

“And?”

Daniel looked at her.

“When they’re confronted, arrested, or questioned, they all seem to be saying the same thing.”

He hesitated as though repeating it aloud made it sound even more absurd.

“They claim vampires made them do it.”

Violetta stared at him for a moment.

Then she laughed softly.

The sound was gentle.

Not mocking.

Merely disbelieving.

“I can confirm that vampires possess no ability to make another person act against their will.”

Daniel gave her a tired look.

“I didn’t think you did.”

“I’m pleased to hear that.”

“The problem is that other people do.”

He turned the tablet around.

The screen displayed a social media feed moving too quickly to read at first glance.

Videos.

Headlines.

Photographs.

Claims stacked upon claims.

Some posts repeated details from actual arrests.

Others had already embellished them.

One claimed vampires could control anyone after making eye contact.

Another insisted they could influence thoughts through their voices.

A third warned people not to sleep near open windows because vampires could command dreams.

Violetta read silently.

Daniel scrolled.

“It’s become chaotic online.”

“That is one word for it.”

“Vampires are being attacked again.”

Violetta’s expression changed very little.

The smile remained for another second.

Then faded.

Daniel watched her.

“Not physically in every case.”

“No.”

Her voice softened.

“But rhetoric has a habit of becoming physical eventually.”

Daniel turned the tablet back toward himself.

“We’re trying to correct false information where we can.”

“Are people listening?”

“Some.”

“And the others?”

“They accuse us of covering for you.”

Violetta inhaled slowly.

She straightened in her chair.

The movement was measured.

Daniel noticed it immediately.

“I don’t intend to overstep.”

Her tone remained soft.

“Nor do I intend to suppress local law enforcement or the city government.”

Daniel folded his hands on top of the desk.

“I know.”

Violetta held his gaze.

“But.”

The word settled between them.

Daniel said nothing.

Violetta continued.

“A normal world is slipping away.”

Her eyes remained fixed on him.

“A world in which vampires, werewolves, and humans live together.”

She paused.

“Not separately.”

“Not as temporary allies.”

“Not as opposing populations forced to share roads, hospitals, schools, and cities.”

Her hands remained still in her lap.

“As one society.”

Daniel’s expression tightened slightly.

Violetta looked toward the tablet.

“That possibility is slipping away slowly but surely.”

Daniel glanced down at the screen.

“It’s been eight days.”

“Yes.”

“People are scared.”

“Yes.”

“We can’t expect them to adjust immediately.”

“I don’t.”

Violetta’s voice held no impatience.

“I don’t expect fear to disappear because I ask politely.”

She leaned back slightly.

“I don’t expect a person to look at empty red eyes, pointed ears, visible fangs, and unfamiliar strength and feel nothing.”

Daniel watched her face.

Violetta smiled again.

This one was gentler.

Almost sympathetic.

“But fear cannot be allowed to determine what becomes true.”

Daniel’s brow furrowed.

She gestured toward the tablet.

“If enough people repeat that vampires can control minds, the absence of that ability will stop mattering.”

“It matters legally.”

“To you.”

Her answer was immediate.

“To courts.”

“To investigators.”

“To anyone willing to wait for evidence.”

She tilted her head slightly.

“But what about someone who sees a stranger online claim that vampires forced him to kill?”

Daniel did not answer.

Violetta continued.

“What about the woman who already believes her neighbor became dangerous after transforming?”

“What about the father who sees his daughter speaking to a vampire and fears she is no longer choosing to do so?”

Her empty red gaze remained unreadable except for the patience in her expression.

“What happens when the public believes we can strip someone of free will?”

Daniel shifted in his chair.

Violetta waited.

He looked toward the window overlooking the station parking lot.

Then back toward her.

“Humans attack vampires.”

Violetta nodded once.

Her smile disappeared.

“Yes.”

The office seemed quieter without it.

Daniel’s heartbeat accelerated slightly.

Violetta did not acknowledge that she heard.

“With each attack,” she said softly, “it becomes easier to attack again.”

Daniel remained still.

“With each killing, the idea of killing becomes more acceptable.”

Her gaze lowered briefly toward the folders spread across his desk.

“And with each loss, resolve hardens.”

“Whose resolve?”

“Everyone’s.”

She looked back at him.

“A vampire sees another vampire murdered and becomes less willing to trust human authorities.”

“A human sees retaliation and becomes more convinced vampires are dangerous.”

“A werewolf sees both groups escalating and decides its pack must prepare.”

Her voice never rose.

“Then preparation is mistaken for aggression.”

“Aggression prompts retaliation.”

“Retaliation becomes proof.”

Daniel exhaled slowly through his nose.

Violetta folded one hand over the other.

“This is how people teach themselves that war was inevitable.”

Daniel looked away.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

The muffled sounds of the station filled the silence between them.

A door closed down the hall.

Someone called for an officer near the front desk.

A radio crackled.

Daniel finally leaned forward.

“What exactly do you expect me to do?”

Violetta remained quiet.

“I’m already doing everything I can.”

His frustration did not become anger, but it sharpened his voice.

“We’re investigating attacks against blood clinics.”

“We’re assigning officers to demonstrations.”

“We’re responding to threats.”

“We’re trying to stop armed groups from organizing without trampling over rights we still have to respect.”

He gestured toward the station around them.

“I’m the chief of police, General.”

“I’m not the governor.”

“I’m not Congress.”

“I don’t control the media.”

“No.”

Violetta agreed calmly.

Daniel continued.

“And now there are vampires and werewolves running around the city.”

Violetta’s eyebrows lifted slightly.

There was no offense in her expression.

Only quiet amusement.

“They were all human once.”

Daniel paused.

Violetta chuckled.

The sound was soft enough that it did not entirely break the tension.

“Have you forgotten?”

Daniel looked directly at her.

“I haven’t forgotten.”

“I’m glad.”

Her answer came gently.

Daniel frowned.

“You know what I meant.”

“I do.”

“Then why say it?”

“Because language matters.”

Violetta leaned forward slightly.

“When you say vampires and werewolves are running around the city, you separate them from everyone else.”

“They are different.”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“So are armed suspects.”

“So are soldiers.”

“So are people experiencing a mental health crisis.”

“So are children.”

Her gaze remained steady.

“Different needs do not automatically create a different society.”

Daniel considered her words.

Violetta continued.

“A vampire is not an unknown creature that arrived from elsewhere.”

“A werewolf is not an invading animal.”

“They are residents.”

“Citizens.”

“Parents.”

“Employees.”

“Veterans.”

“Criminals, in some cases.”

Her lips curved faintly.

“Just as humans can be.”

Daniel’s expression softened by a fraction.

Violetta sat back again.

“I’m not asking you to solve the entire country’s fear from this office.”

“Good.”

A small smile crossed Daniel’s face.

“Because I was going to disappoint you.”

“I’m asking for something much smaller.”

Daniel waited.

“Process every suspect normally.”

His smile faded.

Violetta nodded toward the folders.

“If someone commits assault and claims a vampire forced them, investigate the assault.”

“If someone commits arson and says they were commanded, investigate the arson.”

“Treat the claim as you would any other claim unsupported by evidence.”

Daniel tapped one finger against his desk.

“And if several people all say the same thing?”

“Several people repeating an impossibility does not make it possible.”

“That may not be enough for the public.”

“No.”

Violetta agreed.

“But it must be enough for the law.”

Daniel leaned back again.

“You want official statements.”

“I want accuracy.”

“That sounds like official statements.”

“If necessary.”

Daniel glanced toward the tablet.

“Our communications office can put something together.”

“Good.”

“They’ll want a military confirmation.”

“You may quote me.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Directly?”

“Yes.”

“That vampires cannot control minds.”

Violetta’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“Cannot and do not.”

Daniel gave a slow nod.

“I’ll make sure both are included.”

“Thank you.”

He closed the nearest folder.

“What about the man brought through the lobby?”

“I smelled no vampire on him.”

Daniel’s mouth tightened.

“That’s not exactly admissible evidence.”

“No.”

Violetta smiled faintly.

“But it is useful information.”

“He was arrested after threatening several people with a knife.”

“And he claims vampires told him to do so.”

“He claims they threatened to kill him if he refused.”

“Did he identify them?”

“No.”

“Describe them?”

“Only as vampires.”

Violetta tilted her head.

“A remarkably specific description.”

Daniel almost smiled.

Almost.

“He was drunk.”

“I noticed.”

“He’s also been posting anti-vampire messages for several days.”

Violetta’s expression went still.

“So his accusation began after his arrest.”

“Yes.”

“That simplifies matters.”

“Legally.”

Daniel glanced toward the tablet again.

“Online, it complicates them.”

“Then do not allow the online response to alter the legal one.”

Daniel studied her.

“You make that sound easy.”

“I make it sound necessary.”

The two held each other’s gaze.

Then Daniel sighed.

“Normal processing.”

“Normal charges.”

“Normal investigation.”

Violetta nodded.

“Precisely.”

“No special consideration for claims of vampire control unless evidence appears.”

“Yes.”

Daniel rubbed one thumb over the edge of the folder.

“And you’re certain.”

Violetta’s expression softened.

“Chief Mercer.”

He waited.

“I woke in a body that does not age.”

She raised one gloved hand slightly.

“I can hear conversations through walls.”

“My strength exceeds what my frame suggests.”

“I can run faster than nearly any vehicle on a city street.”

Her hand lowered.

“If vampires could control minds, I would tell you.”

Daniel’s eyes remained on her.

“Even knowing what people would do with that information?”

“Especially then.”

He nodded once.

“I believe you.”

“I know.”

Violetta rose.

The movement was graceful and nearly silent.

Daniel stood a moment later.

She adjusted one glove at the wrist.

“I should return to the others before Lavinia finds another brochure.”

Daniel blinked.

“There’s a good chance she’s found one already.”

“Then the situation may be beyond saving.”

That earned a quiet laugh from him.

Violetta stepped toward the door.

Her hand settled on the handle.

“General.”

She looked back.

Daniel’s expression had grown serious again.

“I can’t promise this stops.”

“I don’t expect promises you cannot keep.”

“I can promise we’ll handle the cases normally.”

“That is enough.”

“For tonight?”

Violetta smiled faintly.

“For tonight.”

She opened the door.

Before stepping into the corridor, she paused.

“One final clarification.”

Daniel waited.

“Vampires possess no form of mind control.”

Her empty red eyes met his.

“No hypnosis.”

“No compulsion.”

“No ability to remove choice.”

Daniel nodded.

“I’ll make sure that is stated plainly.”

“Good.”

Violetta stepped out of the office.

Her soft, measured footsteps carried her down the corridor toward the waiting area.

Behind her, Daniel remained standing beside his desk.

For several seconds, he looked at the closed folders.

Then at the tablet.

The accusations continued multiplying across the screen.

He reached for the phone.

“Get Communications in here.”

He sat down.

“And bring me every report involving a suspect claiming vampire control.”

A pause.

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“We are not creating a separate category.”

He looked toward the office door Violetta had just passed through.

“We’re processing them normally.”
