The Anomaly's Path

After Caster left, I walked back to my dorm in silence. The academy grounds were busy with students laughing and talking about the festival starting tomorrow, but I barely noticed them. My mind was already past the noise.

I reached my room and entered the training room, shut the door behind me, and locked it.

The room was huge — fifty feet wide with a forty-foot ceiling. The walls were made of dark metal that absorbed mana, and glowing runes lined them, ready to soak up any attack. It was built for Grandmaster-level training and could even survive low-level Transcendent strikes.

I walked to the center of the cold floor, sat down cross-legged, and laid Tempest across my knees.

The dark steel blade caught the dim light of the room. It looked perfectly still, but I could feel the faint buzz of my mana running through the handle.

It was time.

I had been putting this off for too long. Every time I thought about the third form, about trying to use it, something held me back.

Fear? Doubt?

The memory of the soul flame turning inward and eating me alive. The feeling of Seris’s blade through my chest. The pain of being torn apart by my own power kept a quiet, heavy lock on my progress.

But the path was clear now.

I had trained with Seren. I had learned to shape the flame, to make it flow, to stop treating it like a weapon and start treating it like part of me. Morgana’s brutal drills and Seren’s intense lessons had made my control over my three powers better than ever.

I knew how to guide the lightning, how to fold space, and how to direct the flame without losing control. The foundation of my soul space had locked into place. I had glimpsed the third form during my spar with Zephyr, watching how his strikes carried something beyond raw strength or skill.

The only real barrier left was me.

I couldn’t seem to take the final step and actually use the form. I just needed to stop thinking and start doing. I closed my eyes and focused inward, leaving the training room behind. In the next moment, I was standing in my soul space.

It happened in a blink.

It was still a narrow grey stone road winding through endless darkness. But the cracks in the stone glowed with a soft, pulsing silver light. Beneath that light, black flames moved through the cracks like blood through veins.

The path was wider than before, more solid, standing firm against the cold emptiness around it. The darkness still pressed in from all sides, but it didn’t feel like it wanted to swallow me anymore. It felt like a quiet night sky, waiting for stars.

And the stars were there.

Faint, shimmering points of silver and purple drifted slowly above the path, rising from the cracks of my core. They didn’t burn or explode — they just floated, born from the heat of the soul flame below.

In the middle of the path, Tempest stood stuck in the stone.

My black lightning coiled around the handle like a sleeping snake. Space bent and folded around the blade in a quiet, steady pulse. And at the base of the sword, the Soul Flame sat — no longer a hungry beast waiting to eat me, but a calm, protective cloak of purple fire, quiet and waiting for my command.

So why can’t I manifest the form? I thought, looking at my hands within the space.

After my spar with Zephyr, I had learned so much about how he moved. His strikes weren’t just fast or strong — his intent seemed to decide what would happen before his sword even finished swinging.

He was choosing the outcome, and the world just followed.

I knew my purpose — to be a wall that would never break for the people who stayed with me, to never be helpless again when everything fell apart. But every time I tried to combine my intent and will into one strike, it fell apart.

I couldn’t get my body to follow what my mind was telling it to do.

I let out a quiet sigh, opened my eyes, and came back to the training room. The cool air hit my face, and I wiped the sweat from my forehead.

”Am I forcing it too much?” I muttered, staring at the Tempest.

Suddenly, my mana link watch on my wrist buzzed violently.

Bzzzz. Bzzzz.

I frowned, lifting my arm to look at the screen. The group chat Roan had created was blowing up.

Roan: ”I’m telling you, we need to secure the corner table near the grand pavilion tomorrow morning. If we’re late, those second-years are going to take the best spot for the opening ceremony.”

Alice: ”I don’t care about the table, Roan. I care about the food. If you eat all the imported meat before I get there, I will kill you.”

Riven: ”Can you two shut up for five minutes? Some of us are actually trying to do some training.”

Lyssaria: ”Good luck with that, Riven. Roan has been talking about the food for three hours straight.”

I stared at the messages scrolling by. My eyes drifted to the names on the screen. Roan. Alice. Riven. Lyssaria. Caster. Malva.

These idiots were actually planning a festival trip like they were normal students. They were so annoying. But they were also the people sitting at my table. The people who were stepping into my circle, tying their lives to mine whether they fully realized it or not.

I let out a dry chuckle and muttered under my breath, ”...Idiots.”

Then I tapped my watch, set it to silent, and tossed it onto the bench nearby. I couldn’t afford to be distracted by them right now.

I stood up, holding Tempest in my right hand. I took a deep breath, letting the silence of the room wash over me. I needed to clear my head. I closed my eyes, but I didn’t enter my soul space this time. I stayed right there, in the center of the room, feeling the cold metal floor beneath my boots.

The room was dead quiet, but my mind was too loud. I tried to shut everything out. I wanted peace, but my thoughts kept rushing back. There was no true silence, just the noise I created by trying too hard to calm my own head.

Why isn’t it working? I asked myself again, thinking through everything.

I went back to the very start, to the foundation of my sword art, Eclipse of the Singularity. It wasn’t some old technique passed down by my family.

It was a sword art that I had built piece by piece, born from desperate fights and close calls with death. It was a direct reflection of my journey in this world. Every form I created was tied to a specific step in my own path.

The thoughts came naturally as I stood there, the tip of Tempest pointing toward the ground.

The First Form — Fractured Eclipse.

When I used it, I created multiple copies of myself, attacking from all sides at once. It was wild, fast, and hard to keep up with.

It was the physical version of my past. When I first arrived in this world, I was broken, scared, and completely lost. I tried to be everywhere at once, trying to protect everyone from every angle because I didn’t trust my own strength.

I spread myself thin, relying on numbers and confusion because I was desperate to keep myself and those around me from falling apart.

The Second Form — Heaven’s Divide.

A single, absolute cut that ignored distance, armor, and barriers. It was sharp, precise, and unyielding.

It represented my... present.

I had stopped running. I had stopped trying to cover every angle. Instead, I had locked my eyes on one path, choosing to cut through any obstacle in front of me with focused determination. It was my way of saying that nothing — not distance, not magic, not steel — could stand between me and what I wanted to protect.

Then... what about the Third Form?

I felt my heart give a steady, heavy thud in my chest.

I looked down at my hands. My fingers were still tense from holding so much power. I realized I had spent so long running from who I used to be.

I had hated the weak boy who first arrived in this world — lost and useless. I had hated the desperate, scared survivor who had dragged himself through the mud of the Path Trial, barely holding on to life.

But standing here in the silence, a cold truth settled in my chest. You can’t build something strong by burying your own past. Hadn’t I already accepted the flames as part of me back then? I had. I knew they weren’t a curse.

But knowing it in my head was different from truly living it.

The weak boy’s fear was exactly why I fought so hard to never be helpless again. The survivor’s pain was the armor that kept me standing. The Soul Flame wasn’t some separate power I had to constantly manage and lock away — it was just me, burning with the refusal to let anyone I cared about turn to ash.

I didn’t need to force my powers to work together. I didn’t need to wrestle the lightning, bend the space, and cage the flame like separate weapons I had to juggle.

They were all me.

Wholeness.

The Third Form wasn’t a swing. It wasn’t about using muscle to push a blade through the air. It was a declaration — a statement.

It was the moment I stopped trying to force reality to bend, and instead simply decided that the cut had already happened. It was moving from trying to protect by fighting, to protecting by simply saying that the threat no longer existed.

”Acceptance...” I whispered.

The moment the word left my mouth, the mana inside my core didn’t explode — it went still. Completely, strangely quiet.

The crackle of my lightning, the heavy pressure of my space power, and the presence of my Soul Flame didn’t fight each other anymore.

For the first time, the lines between them vanished. They melted together into one smooth flow of energy that rushed down my arm and into Tempest’s handle. It didn’t feel like three powers working together. It felt like one power that was completely mine.

I kept my eyes closed, but in my mind, my soul space shifted...

A deep hum echoed through the darkness as the narrow stone road started to change. The edges of the path didn’t just widen — they faded away, the stone spreading outward in every direction until the grey road became a huge, solid open space.

The silver light from the cracks flared up, rising to meet the drifting stars of my core, while the dark purple fire of the Soul Flame wrapped around the image of Tempest.

The space was no longer just a path through the dark. It was becoming a stronghold, its foundation locking into place with a weight I could feel pressing against my mind.

I took one slow step forward on the stone path, walking toward the sword stuck in the center. Each step felt heavier, more solid, without any of the old hesitation. I reached out and grabbed the leather-wrapped handle.

The moment my fingers closed around it, a wave of energy burst outward, pushing the darkness back by hundreds of feet.

I knew exactly what to do.

I opened my eyes in the training room, staring at the empty space in front of me. I didn’t set up a stance. I didn’t prepare my muscles for a big swing. I just stood there, my hand on Tempest’s hilt, and started to draw the blade.
