The Anomaly's Path

I stared at my hand, watching a small black spark dance on my fingertips. I knew this flame well. I had used it in countless life-or-death fights, pushed it to its limits, and felt the cold numbness it left behind every time it fed.

I didn’t need anyone to tell me how dangerous it was.

But Seren was right about one thing — until now, I had always used it like a hammer. I either let it sleep inside me, or I threw it out as a massive wave of destruction to erase whatever was in front of me.

”Watch closely, little bird,” Seren said.

The white fire on her palm didn’t explode outward. Instead, it smoothed out, flowing down her wrist and wrapping around her arm like liquid.

She walked over to a metal testing block. With a gentle flick of her wrist, the liquid fire moved forward, curling around the block.

There was no loud blast. She simply squeezed her hand, compressing the heat. The air warped for a second, and the thick iron block was cleanly sliced into three perfect pieces, the edges glowing white-hot.

”Fire is not just an explosion,” Seren explained, putting out her flame with a simple wave.

”A fireball is just heat thrown in a straight line. If you throw it and it hits, sure, it burns. But that is a waste of what fire can really do. Fire is a process. It is about heat and pressure. If you compress the heat into a single point, it becomes sharper than any metal. If you let it flow like water, it can slip around any shield. You need to stop thinking of your fire as fuel for a blast, and start shaping it like a current.”

I took a deep breath and walked over to the weapon rack, pulling out a training sword.

My sword art, Eclipse of the Singularity, had two forms I could use. The first form combined my space and lightning to split my presence across the field. The second form cut straight through distance and armor.

I had been stuck trying to create a third form that could safely use the Soul Flame with my sword art without it consuming my body or slowing me down.

This was exactly what I needed.

I gripped the hilt tightly and sent a steady stream of my black flame into the sword. I had covered my blade with fire before, but this time, I didn’t just let it sit there. I remembered what Seren said. I forced the flame to move along the steel, trying to make it flow like water.

Sizzle.

The steel groaned. The moment my focus slipped even a little, the black flame stopped moving and bit directly into the metal. The blade instantly turned to grey ash, snapping right at the guard.

”Too rigid,” Seren called out, leaning against a pillar. ”You are forcing it too hard. Fire needs an unbreakable will, but it also needs movement. The moment you try to freeze it in place, it will eat whatever it is touching. Let the motion of your arm guide the path of the flame. The swing pulls the fire, and the fire follows the edge.”

I looked at the broken hilt in my hand, feeling the same frustration rise up again. I knew how to destroy things. That was easy.

But controlling that destruction, turning it into something useful instead of dangerous, was completely different. It felt like trying to write a letter with a heavy sword. I had to stop fighting the flame and start guiding it.

Morgana stood up from the bench, stepping into the arena with a heavy wooden practice sword of her own.

”Alright, enough talking. The best way to learn a flow is under pressure. Keep drawing new swords, Leo. I’m going to push your body to the limit, and you’re going to keep trying to release that flame properly before the metal breaks.”

_

The hours began to blur together into a painful, never-ending training session.

We pushed through the dead of the night, turning the training hall into an intense testing ground. Morgana rushed me again and again, her heavy wooden sword swinging with blinding speed and force.

I had to use Flash Instinct to dodge and deflect her strikes, all while constantly drawing mana from my bloodline to keep going. My Energy Siphon worked overtime, pulling in the heat from the room to keep my body moving, but the toll was brutal.

”Keep your eyes on me, kid!” Morgana’s voice cut through the air as her wooden sword came down.

My Flash Instinct flared, throwing my perception into overdrive. The world slowed down. I could see the exact path of her strike, the shift in her shoulders, and the heavy wind around her weapon. I stepped to the side, my footwork moving my body before my mind could fully register the threat.

But even with my reactions pushed to their limit, my mind was lagging. I was spending too much energy trying to keep the flame from dissolving the sword in my hand. I had to stop treating the flame like an outside force.

It had to become part of my arm.

Every time I traded blows with Morgana, I tried to shape the Soul Flame. I would bring out the black fire, force it to flow along the edge of the training blade, and try to compress it into a sharp line right before striking.

I focused on my grip, trying to balance the weight of the steel with the weightless, devouring nature of the energy.

”You’re still over-thinking the connection,” Seren called out from the sidelines, her violet eyes tracking every movement. ”The sword isn’t just a pipe you’re shoving the fire through. The sword is the guide. If your swing has a hitch, the fire will pool there and burn the metal. Make the arc perfect!”

I gritted my teeth, grabbing another blade from the rack after the previous one turned to grey dust. My bloodline throbbed, its healing kicking in to soothe the tension in my arms. I couldn’t let the fatigue slow me down.

Dozens of training swords broke as the hours passed in the dark.

Sometimes the flame ate through the steel before I could even raise my sword. Other times, I pushed too hard and the energy broke the blade right in my hand. But with every passing hour, my body started to adapt.

By the time the first hints of morning light began to creep through the high windows, something finally shifted.

Morgana lunged forward, swinging down to block my path. Instead of backing away, I dropped low and moved around her guard. As I swung my blade upward, I didn’t just throw the fire out. I gripped the hilt, focused, and made the flame spin along the edge, releasing the pressure at the end of my swing.

The black flame flew off the tip of the sword like a crescent wave.

It didn’t explode. It was a thin, silent line of darkness that cut through the air, making the sword feel weightless. The line shot forward, pulling wind behind it, and slammed into the far wall of the arena. The wall cracked from the impact.

Dust and small pieces of stone fell to the floor. Then the energy faded.

I stood there, panting heavily, my hands shaking from the effort. The training sword in my hand was scorched and badly bent, but it was still in one piece.

It hadn’t broken.

I stared at the blade. It worked. The spinning motion of the flame didn’t just protect the steel — it cut through the air in front of the blade, letting my swing move faster with nothing slowing it down.

A grin spread across my face. If I could combine this flowing flame with the speed of my lightning and the space-folding of my second form, the third form of Eclipse of the Singularity would be something else entirely.

”Not bad,” Morgana said, lowering her practice weapon with a laugh, wiping the sweat from her forehead. ”You actually guided the flame instead of just blowing things up. That technique breaks through shields by pulling the air and mana away right before your strike lands.”

Seren walked forward, looking at the faint mark left on the ground. ”You are starting to understand the process, Leo. But, you still have a long way to go before you can weave this into your actual sword forms without breaking your rhythm, but the foundation is finally solid.”

She looked up at the high windows, where the first faint light of dawn was breaking through.

”We still have a lot of time left before your three days are up,” Seren said, a small, knowing smirk on her lips. ”The night is over, but the real work is just starting. Now that you know how to hold the current, we’re going to see how well you can guide it when everything around you is falling apart.”

I gripped the warped hilt of my practice sword, ignoring the dull ache in my muscles. Damn it. This is going to be a hell of a ride...
