The Anomaly's Path

I stood in the middle of the training hall, my chest heaving as I stared at another broken sword in my hand. The room was quiet, except for my own ragged breathing. The three days were almost over.

We had pushed straight through, and my whole body felt like lead. While Roan and the others were out in the Magic City, learning from the best teachers, I was stuck in this room, grinding myself into the ground.

Normal people would have collapsed on the first night. But my bloodline was the only reason I was still standing.

It was a painful cycle: Morgana’s wooden sword would slam into my ribs, cracking bone and leaving deep bruises, only for my healing to kick in seconds later to fix the damage.

My mana channels would burn from holding the Soul Flame, but my Energy Siphon would pull in the heat from Seren’s fires and turn it back into power to keep me going. My body was adapting, remembering the pain, and rebuilding itself stronger.

But my mind was completely fried. You can’t heal mental exhaustion.

The first day had been a disaster. I broke over fifty swords just trying to get the black flame to move along the steel. It was either too slow, turning the metal to ash instantly, or too fast, causing the weapon to blow up in my face.

But during those long, dark hours, I started to notice how the energy actually worked.

At first, I tried to control the Soul Flame the same way I controlled my other powers. When I used Volt Step, my lightning was a sudden burst of force that pushed my body forward.

When I folded space for my sword strikes, it was a clean cut through distance. I thought I could just snap the Soul Flame into place with that same aggressive command.

But fire didn’t work like that. It wasn’t an instant burst or a sudden spark. It had its own weight, its own flow.

I noticed that the Soul Flame didn’t just burn — it had weight. When I used Volt Step, the explosive speed of my lightning would try to rip the flame off the blade, making it flare out of control.

But if I used my spatial awareness — the same sense that let me feel changes in the world around me — I could actually hold the space around the blade. By making a tiny fold in the space next to the steel, I could keep the flame from touching the flat side of the blade while using the motion of my swing to guide the fire along the sharp edge.

I was using space as a shield for my own sword, and using the motion of my arm to pull the fire. The swing pulls the fire, and the fire follows the edge. Seren’s words weren’t just theory. They were real rules of movement.

”You are still treating your affinities like separate tools in a box, Leo,” Seren had said on the second day, watching me drop another pile of ash from my hands.

”A true fighter doesn’t separate sword from affinity. They work together. Your lightning gives you speed, your space gives you reach, and your fire is your edge. When you swing, you shouldn’t feel your mana shifting between elements. They should blend into one smooth motion.”

Her words stuck in my head, forcing me to change how I fought. Instead of using Volt Step to close the distance, stopping, and then trying to ignite the blade, I had to learn to blend them mid-motion.

I started experimenting.

I would begin a swing, using my space affinity to slightly change the distance of my opponent’s weapon, and right as Morgana adjusted her guard, I would let the lightning spark across my knuckles to adjust my angle in a split second, all while the black flame spun tightly along the edge of the training sword.

Combining my lightning and space wasn’t new to me. My first two sword forms already did that, blending speed and distance to warp around the battlefield. But adding the Soul Flame into that mix was a completely different nightmare.

It was trying to balance three forces at the exact same time. Every time I tried, the unstable black flame would disrupt my spatial folds, or the spark of my lightning would cause the fire to flare out of control and eat the blade.

Keeping my focus split three ways — keeping my speed, holding the space around the blade, and spinning the black flame at the edge, was almost impossible. But slowly, painfully, my body started to learn the movements for balancing all three at once.

By the third day, the training had turned into a complete nightmare. Morgana didn’t give me room to think.

She rushed me from my blind spots, her wooden sword swinging with enough force to shatter stone, while Seren shot small, fast spheres of white fire from the side to keep me moving. I had to dodge, block, and strike back while constantly trying to keep that black current spinning on my training blade.

My Flash Instinct was the only thing keeping me ahead.

The world would slow down. I could see Morgana’s blade and the heat from Seren’s white fire clearly in my mind. I would turn using my footwork, feel the space around her defense, slip through, and swing.

I could feel the subtle shifts in the air now. Because of my space affinity, I didn’t just see Morgana’s incoming strikes — I could feel the way her wooden sword displaced the space around it before it even got close.

I read her movements and adjusted my stance, letting her heavy swings pass just inches from my chest while I focused on my own blade. I stopped forcing the black flame. Instead, I let my swing pull the energy naturally, letting the heat roll off the tip of the sword like water spinning off a wheel.

Every time I swung, I tried to make the black flame spin along the edge. It was starting to work. The spinning flame didn’t just protect the steel — it cut through the air in front of the blade, letting my swing move faster.

The technique broke through shields by clearing the air and mana away right before the blade landed.

And now, the final hours of the third day were slipping away. The floor around me was a mess, covered in deep black scorch marks, and cracked tiles.

I could feel something shifting deep inside my core.

The third form of my sword art was right there, just behind a thin, invisible wall in my mind. I wasn’t ready to use it yet — not here.

But the path was finally clear. I knew exactly how to bring the Soul Flame into the third form without destroying myself. I could feel the breakthrough waiting for me. I just needed to go back home to finally grasp it.

”Alright, kid,” Morgana said, resting her wooden sword on her shoulder as she walked over. She was covered in dust, but she had a wide, satisfied smirk on her face. ”That’s enough. Your three days are up. Go get cleaned up and rest for a bit. We’re departing back to the academy in a few hours.”

Seren walked up beside her, the white flames on her hands fading away into a soft, gentle warmth that chased the chill out of the room. She looked at the warped training sword still gripped in my hand, then up at my face.

I let go of the hilt.

The blade clattered against the floor, completely worn out. I wiped the sweat from my eyes, my whole body aching in a good way. I looked at Morgana, then at Seren, let out a long breath, and gave them a respectful nod.

”Thank you...” I said, my voice rough but sincere. ”Both of you. I know I’ve been a pain to teach.”

Morgana laughed, a loud, booming sound that bounced off the stone walls. ”Understatement of the century, kid. I’ve never seen anyone break so many of my weapons. If you weren’t so damn stubborn, I would have thrown you out the window on day one.”

”I mean it,” I continued, looking between them. ”I know I can’t officially be your disciple. I already have another master, and I have to respect that. But what you both taught me these past three days... it saved my life. Or at least, it will save it in the fights to come.”

Seren smiled softly, walking closer. Before I could react, she reached up and ruffled my messy white hair, messing it up even more. ”We know, Leo. We didn’t do this to collect disciples. We did this because we wanted to repay your grandpa’s favor.”

She puffed up her chest slightly, a proud, playful look on her face. ”Besides, who wouldn’t want to brag about teaching the legendary Leo von Celestial? Even if you already have a master, you’ll always carry what I taught you.”

Morgana snorted, rolling her eyes at Seren’s dramatic pose. ”Don’t let it go to your head, bird-brain. The kid did all the hard work.”

”Oh, please,” Seren shot back, sticking her tongue out slightly at Morgana. ”Without my advice, he’d still be struggling. You should be thanking me!”

I couldn’t help but let out a small, tired chuckle as the two of them started bickering like they always did.

”Let’s go,” I muttered, my voice rough but steady.

I turned my back on the bickering pair and the training arena, heading toward my room to finally wash off the three days of dirt. I still had a long way to go, and this breakthrough was only the beginning.
