Limitless Evolution As a Snake

I pull again. Harder this time. Her whole leg shifts an inch across the concrete. She makes a sound, not a word, something below language. Her eyes are round as dinner plates, locked on the place where her shoe connects to a thing she can barely see.

I release, reposition, bite again. Drag. Release. Bite. Drag.

Her lips part. Nothing comes out. She’s looking at me the way prey looks at something it can’t categorise as predator, not safety, just unknown, and the unknown is worse than both.

Then something shifts behind her eyes. Not understanding, not really more like her body making a decision her mind hasn’t caught up to yet. Her leg shrinks back toward her torso, slow and shaky, like she’s retracting a limb from a flame.

She gets her feet under her. Wobbly. One hand still on the wall. She edges sideways, keeping her back pressed to the brick, putting distance between herself and the golems, between herself and me. Her eyes never leave the ground where I’m coiled. Every step is deliberate, measured, the kind of movement that comes from pure survival wiring. Don’t turn your back, don’t look away, don’t stop moving.

She’s getting away. Good. That’s what I want. That’s the whole point.

It does hurt to see her look at me like that, but I need her to get away.

I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. The bond tugs once more as she rounds the corner at the far end of the alley, and then the connection goes thin and distant, like a radio signal fading between buildings.

Relief. Warm and stupid and entirely too premature. Because behind me, stone grinds against stone.

I turn my head, or what passes for turning, when your entire body is a head attached to a tube and both golem men are moving. The paralysis is wearing off. Golem dickhead’s arm twitches, then lifts. Golem with the fat head is already bending at the waist, thick fingers closing around the knife he dropped.

They’ve seen me.

Fat Head’s eyes lock onto mine. That lopsided brain behind his thin temple skin must have finally registered the threat, because his face does something ugly, not anger, not confusion, just the blank, functional acknowledgment of an obstacle to be removed.

The knife comes up. He’s still stiff, still fighting the venom in his system, so the motion is slow. Too slow to be fast, but fast enough when you’re a snake in shock with nowhere to slither off to.

I try to move. My body doesn’t cooperate. The adrenaline that was carrying me through the last thirty seconds has decided to take a coffee break, and what’s left is just meat and scales and a very bad feeling.

The blade descends.

It’s not like I don’t try.

I throw myself sideways, a desperate central snap that carries me maybe a few inches along the mud and concrete. My scales scrape against grit and something wet, and for half a heartbeat I think I’ve made it, I think the angle’s wrong, I think..

The knife catches me.

It enters my scales like a hot nail driven into a wet log. The pain is immediate and absolute, a white-hot scream that starts at the point of impact and radiates outward through every nerve I possess. I feel the steel separate scale from scale, push through muscle, grind against something that might be bone or might just be the structural equivalent of a snake’s bone.

My vision blurs at the edges, goes watery, and I can feel something inside me shift but not break, not yet, but shift, like furniture sliding across a floor during an earthquake.

The golem pulls the knife out with the same stiff, mechanical slowness, and that’s somehow worse.

My blood hits the concrete. Bright red. A lot of it. More than something my size should be able to produce, which is either impressive or terminal.

Three seconds.

That’s all I thought I needed. Three seconds to get her moving, three seconds to buy her enough distance, three seconds to be the hero of my own stupid little story. And it worked. She’s gone. She’s around the corner and down the block and alive, and the bond is still there, faint and warm and hers, this weird electric thread connecting me to a dark elf I met yesterday.

And she’s apparently mine now, whatever the fuck that means.

Three seconds were enough for her.

It wasn’t enough for me.

He’s going to bring it down again. I can see it in the set of his shoulders, the way his weight shifts forward.

This time I’ll be in two pieces on the ground, and that’ll be the end of whatever this is.

Old mate.

I reach for the System the way you reach for a phone in the dark blindly, desperately, hoping the thing is still where you left it.

Nothing.

No text overlay. No dry Aussie commentary. ”No reckon you should’ve planned this better, mate, or yeah nah, that’s a proper fuckup.”

Just silence, the kind of silence that means either the System is choosing not to respond or the System can’t, and I don’t know which option scares me more.

Hey, you absolute cunt, say something, give me something, anything!

The knife starts its descent.

I want to live.

The thought arrives with a clarity that surprises me, because it’s not a heroic thought, not a noble thought, not the kind of thing you engrave on a plaque. It’s small and ugly and entirely selfish: I want to keep breathing. I want to keep feeling the bond pulse against the inside of my skull. I want to find out what the dark elf’s name is, and I want to see what the System looks like when it’s actually impressed instead of just tolerating me, and I want to know what it feels like to be something bigger than a snake cosplaying a red shoelace.

Fuck, I’m not even a red shoelace right now.

I want to live so badly it hurts worse than the blade.
