Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

After the first goal, Vardy was a completely different player on the pitch.

He was still running like every second was his last, but those frantic sprints finally had a real shape to them. During his first twelve minutes, he had been charging from awkward angles into passing lanes he was accidentally blocking himself. Now, his runs into the channels were landing exactly where they needed to be. His pressing had proper timing. He had stopped trying to force the game he wanted to play and started reading the one that was actually happening around him.

Magath watched him intently from the touchline. Hughes Yves, standing right beside him, murmured, ”That was a proper strike.”

”The shot was good,” Magath agreed. ”Though that is not what I am watching.”

”What are you looking at then?”

”What he did right after. Ten minutes ago, he was running like a headless chicken. He managed to calm his head down.” Magath gave a light shrug.

Then the third goal arrived in the 74th minute.

Rakitić stripped the ball off Ryan Babel near the halfway line and slid it smoothly forward to Mateo. Hoffenheim’s defensive line dropped back too fast and far too wide, giving Mateo open grass through the middle with time on the ball for the first time all half. He picked out Huntelaar cutting in from the left wing. Huntelaar unleashed a shot that ricocheted off a defender’s shin, sending the ball looping down toward the six-yard box.

Vardy had started his sprint the moment Mateo first collected the ball forty meters back. He arrived at the edge of the six-yard box a fraction of a second before Tom Starke could react, threw himself low, and poked the ball over the goal line with the stretched toe of his right boot.

His second goal of the night. His competitive debut for Schalke was only thirty-four minutes old, and he had already bagged a brace.

He stood over the ball in the net, blinking in utter disbelief. Then he took off running.

He whipped his jersey off over his head before he even slowed down.

Sprinting straight toward the pitchside cameras, arms spread wide, he dropped to his knees on the wet grass with his chest thrust forward. Printed across the front of his white undershirt in black marker, written in a rushed, uneven hand, were the words:

JIMMY! THIS IS FOR YOU!

The referee immediately reached for his breast pocket, flashing a yellow card for the removed shirt. Vardy did not care one bit. He had known he would take the booking the moment he wrote those words on the shirt in his hotel bathroom mirror that morning, long before he even knew if he would get off the bench.

Three thousand miles away, in the quiet back room of a pub in Halifax, a stocky lad in his twenties leapt to his feet, screaming at a television screen that most of the pub had assumed was set to the darts. He was pointing violently at the broadcast, shouting something his mates could barely understand through the raw emotion in his voice, though the meaning was unmistakable.

”That is my mate! That is my bloody mate scoring in Germany!”

Jimmy and Vardy had been inseparable since primary school. They had pulled the same brutal twelve-hour shifts at the medical splint factory back in Sheffield. Jimmy had lent him petrol money more times than either of them could count. When Vardy was grinding out non-league matches on freezing Saturday afternoons right after a Friday night shift, Jimmy was the one voice constantly telling him never to give it up. And when Schalke offered that trial and Vardy could not afford the flight to Germany, Jimmy had sold his prized signed Manchester United shirt without a second thought to pay for the plane ticket.

Vardy had made a promise to him at the departure gate that day: every single goal he scored from then on would carry his name.

In the middle of the pub, Jimmy was weeping openly, not even caring who saw. The same workmates who had been laughing about the German trial three weeks ago were now staring at the screen in stunned silence, quietly trying to figure out how much a Bundesliga player actually made.

Back on the pitch, Vardy pulled his blue jersey back over his head and jogged toward the center circle. He skipped any further celebration, finding Mateo and standing alongside him with his hands resting on his hips, still catching his breath.

”Cheers, mate,” Vardy panted, coming up alongside him.

”Cheers?”

”For making all that happen, like. Seriously... cheers, Mateo.”

”You were the one who put them in the net,” Mateo smiled.

”Yeah, well, but you’re the one pulling all the bloody strings out here, aren’t ya?” Vardy paused, wiping sweat off his brow and taking a deep breath. ”Nobody’s ever set things up for me like that in my life. Nobody.”

”Let us finish this off properly,” Mateo said, slapping his shoulder. ”Sixteen minutes left.”

”Right, yeah. Sixteen minutes.”

They jogged back to their spots. All around them, the reserves who had struggled through a sluggish first half were suddenly moving with effortless confidence. Over on the bench, Bujerab sat with his elbows resting on his knees, watching the pitch with a completely unreadable expression.

The final whistle blew. Schalke 3, Hoffenheim 0.

To everyone’s surprise, Magath brought Vardy along to the post-match press conference.

It was entirely against his usual protocol. A debut striker coming off the bench in the fifty-fifth minute did not normally sit shoulder-to-shoulder with the manager in front of a wall of expectant German journalists. But Magath had made up his mind somewhere between the pitch and the tunnel, and once his mind was set, there was no changing it.

Vardy sat next to him in his damp match kit, hair still plastered to his forehead, looking like a young boy who had accidentally walked into the wrong press room.

The very first question came from a reporter with Bild: ”Mr. Magath, why did you choose to sign a player from the eighth tier of English football?”

Magath glanced sideways at Vardy and gave him a quiet nod.

Vardy leaned in toward the microphone. His response was direct and completely unpolished, his thick Sheffield accent filling the room.

”Well, it was the seventh tier, actually, mate,” Vardy said. ”But that is not really the point, is it?” He looked across the room of journalists. ”I got here because Silva happened to see some clips of me and reckoned I could play a bit. He told his agent, his agent told Mr. Magath, and Mr. Magath watched a session and said yes. That is the whole story, really.”

He paused, glancing toward the back of the room where Mateo was leaning against the wall in his tracksuit. Vardy’s tone softened slightly.

”Mr. Magath took a gamble on me because Silva told him I was worth taking a punt on. That is the only reason I am sitting up here tonight. Everything that happened on that pitch came down to someone believing I could play at this level before I even had the right to believe it myself.”

A sudden hush fell over the room. The journalists had come in expecting standard post-match cliché, not this level of honesty.

The Bild reporter quickly followed up. ”And the shirt underneath? Who is Jimmy?”

Vardy offered a small, crooked smile. ”Jimmy is my best mate back home. He sold his signed Manchester United shirt just to buy my plane ticket over to Germany for the trial. So I made a promise to him that I would share every goal with him. That is what tonight was about.”

The reporter closed his notepad right in the middle of his next prepared question. He had his headline.

Magath watched the young Englishman from the seat beside him, staying silent. He had spent decades in professional football watching young players get swallowed whole by their first taste of the media spotlight, and he had rarely seen anyone handle it with such natural, unpretentious grace.
