Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Carvajal showed up at noon the next day.

Having kept a spare key from helping Mateo settle into his new house, he let himself in after hearing the boy had been discharged late the previous night. Rather than waiting for Mateo to answer his phone, he walked straight inside and found him in the kitchen.

Mateo was standing at the counter, calmly eating a bowl of cereal, putting full weight on both legs with no crutches, no support, and no limp.

Carvajal stopped dead in the doorway.

”What is going on here?” he asked, staring at Mateo’s feet. ”You are standing. Why are you... or rather, how are you standing?”

”Calm down, man,” Mateo replied around a mouthful of cereal. ”I am completely fine.”

”Yeah, that is exactly why I am asking how!” Carvajal threw his hands up. ”The news said you have a torn ligament requiring four weeks minimum! There is literally a photo of you being rolled out in a wheelchair!”

”Yeah, well, the wheelchair was for the camera crew outside,” Mateo said with a soft grin.

Carvajal took a long, deep breath and closed his eyes. When he opened them, he pulled out a kitchen chair, sat down heavily, and pressed both palms flat on the table, as if he needed something solid to hold onto.

”Alright then. Start from the beginning,” Carvajal said, his voice deadly serious. ”And do not leave a single detail out.”

Mateo walked him through the entire sequence: the force of the tackle, his split-second decision to stay down on the grass, the CT scan that showed nothing, and the secret agreement he made with Magath to play up the injury. He told the story straight, without any exaggeration, knowing his representative needed the absolute truth.

By the time Mateo finished speaking, Carvajal was leaning back in his chair, staring up at the ceiling in complete disbelief.

”So... you are fine,” Carvajal summarized slowly.

”Yep. Aside from some minor surface bruising, I am good.”

”And Magath is telling the entire German press corps that you have a four-week ligament tear.”

”Exactly. That way nobody builds a game plan for me ahead of the first match back.”

Carvajal let out a sudden laugh. It was not a happy laugh, but rather the sound of a man who had spent two decades in professional football believing he had seen every dirty trick in the book, only to be shown a brand-new one by a seventeen-year-old.

”You are going to give me a heart attack, kid,” Carvajal groaned, rubbing his temples. ”I will not even make it to fifty.”

”Look, I am sorry about the wheelchair photo,” Mateo offered sheepishly.

”Do not be sorry about the photo! Be sorry about the three hours I spent last night calling every top orthopedic specialist in North Rhine-Westphalia!” Carvajal looked across the table, his expression softening into serious concern. ”Your mother called me, Mateo. At two in the morning. She was crying.”

The cereal spoon froze halfway to Mateo’s mouth. ”What? Why did my mom call you?”

”She saw the tackle on television. She called me because your phone was off, convinced you would never walk again, along with a whole mountain of other terrifying worries.”

Mateo set the spoon back down in the bowl.

”She is on a plane right now,” Carvajal said quietly. ”Both of them are. Your father booked the tickets at three in the morning. They land in Düsseldorf at four this afternoon.”

An hour later, both of them were riding in Carvajal’s car toward Düsseldorf Airport. Mateo had considered calling his parents during the drive to tell them the truth and save them six hours of airborne terror. But he ultimately decided against it. Some things could not be fixed over a phone call, and he knew they would not truly believe he was okay until they saw him with their own eyes. His mother had spent eleven long hours on a flight believing her son was severely injured; a random text saying ”Actually, I am fine” would only make her worry more.

The arrivals hall at Düsseldorf Airport was packed with December holiday travelers. Mateo stood near the security barrier wearing a baseball cap and sunglasses, his ankle wrapped in a loose bandage he did not need, performing a subtle limp for anyone who might recognize him in public.

At precisely 4:17, the sliding glass doors opened.

His mother came through first.

Ana Silva was forty-three years old, small, with dark hair, and she had clearly spent most of the transcontinental flight in tears. Her eyes were swollen, her nose was red, and she was clutching her husband’s arm with both hands as if the floor beneath her might give way at any second. Carlos walked right beside her carrying a single travel bag, his jaw set in the rigid expression of a man who had been holding himself and his wife together for eleven hours straight.

Ana caught sight of Mateo and stopped dead in her tracks.

For two long seconds, she simply stared at him. He was standing upright, bearing weight on both feet, alive and vertical in a way that the television footage, the dramatic headlines, and eleven hours of catastrophic imagination had insisted he would not be.

Then she ran.

She covered the fifteen yards between them faster than Mateo had ever seen her move in his life. She threw her arms around his chest and began sobbing uncontrollably. They were not quiet, polite tears, but full, body-shaking gasps she could neither stop nor hide. Eleven long hours of imagining the absolute worst had suddenly collided with the reality of her son standing whole right in front of her.

”Mãe,” Mateo murmured into her hair, holding her tight. ”I am okay. I am fine, I promise. Look at me.”

She could not even look at him yet, shaking far too hard as her fingers dug into his coat so tightly he could feel her nails through the fabric.

Carlos reached them a second later. He did not grab Mateo right away. Instead, he placed a heavy hand on his son’s shoulder and squeezed. His eyes were glistening and his mouth was set in a tight, rigid line, wrapping his entire emotional composure into that single point of contact, knowing that if he let go for even a second, he would break down too.

”You are walking,” Carlos said, his voice cracking on the second word.

”I am walking, Pai. I promise. It is nowhere near as bad as they made it sound.”

”The news said four weeks. They said something about torn ligaments.”

”I am fine, Pai. The news is wrong.”

Carlos looked at him, really looked at him, with the intense scrutinizing gaze of a father who had been terrified for his son’s life. He saw Mateo standing tall. He saw the full weight balanced on both legs and the clear, pain-free eyes. The crack in Carlos’s composure widened just enough for one long, shaky exhale before he pulled himself back together.

”Okay,” Carlos muttered, nodding to himself. ”Okay. As long as you are fine, that is all that matters.”

Ana was still crying into Mateo’s chest. Around them, people passing through the bustling arrivals hall began to glance over. A woman wheeling a suitcase smiled warmly at the family as she walked by, and an older man wearing a Düsseldorf football scarf offered a sympathetic nod.

Mateo held his mother tightly and let her cry. He owed her that much. He owed her considerably more, but this was what he could give her right now, in a cold German airport in December, four thousand miles away from the home where she had raised him.

”Come on,” he said gently after a few minutes. ”I have a house now. It has a real kitchen and a guest room.”

Ana pulled back slightly, wiping her tear-streaked face with both palms and accidentally smearing mascara across her cheekbones. ”You have a house? Since when?”

”Since October.”

”Why did you not tell me you have a house?”

”I was going to surprise you at Christmas.”

She smacked him on the arm. It was not hard, but it was the universal, instinctual gesture of a mother whose sheer terror had instantly converted into pure indignation. ”You do not call. You do not tell me about a house. And then I find out my son is severely injured from the television!” She smacked his arm a second time for emphasis. ”The television, Mateo!”

”I know, Mãe. I am so sorry. I should have called.”

Behind her, Carlos was smiling for the first time in twelve hours. It was a tired, raw, but completely genuine smile.

”It is alright, Ana. Let us go see this house,” Carlos said gently.

They walked out to the car together. Ana held onto Mateo’s arm the entire way across the parking garage. Her grip loosened by tiny degrees, but she never fully let go, as though releasing him might shatter the proof that he was real, whole, and standing right beside her.

On the drive back to Gelsenkirchen, Mateo laid out the truth. He explained everything, leaving out the mysterious system, but coming clean about the injury itself. The tackle was real, and the initial pain was real, but nothing was torn or broken. He was bruised, but that was all. The rest of the drama had been a tactical deception cooked up between him and his coach.

Ana processed the revelation in distinct stages. The first stage involved smacking him on the arm yet again. The second stage involved crying all over again, though with a profound sense of relief this time. The third stage involved lecturing Carvajal loudly in Portuguese for failing to give her a heads-up sooner.

Sitting in the front passenger seat, Carlos watched the wintery German countryside roll past the window in silence. His hand rested quietly on the dashboard, his eyes finally dry.

His son was going to be completely fine. That was more than enough. Everything else could wait.

You know the drill: Hand over those Power Stones to keep the momentum rolling!
