Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

The city had been different since morning.

Mateo noticed it on the walk from his new house to the training complex — not in anything specific but in the aggregate of small things. The blue was everywhere: scarves tied to door handles, flags from windows, a wall of faded Schalke crests on a building he passed every day and hadn’t quite registered as a mural until this morning when someone had been up at dawn refreshing the paint. The tram had been full of blue at seven-thirty. The cafés had been full of people talking too quickly about something they cared about very much.

He’d experienced derbies before, from a distance. He’d watched them on screens. He hadn’t understood, until this morning, that a derby wasn’t an event that happened to a city — it was something the city became.

The training session was a final walkthrough, not a session. Forty minutes of shape work, set piece rehearsal, and Magath talking through the Dortmund patterns one more time with the concentrated urgency of a man who had studied his opponent for a full week and still wasn’t sure it was enough.

”Kagawa is going to drop deep to pick up the ball between our lines,” Magath said, tapping the tactical board aggressively. ”The second he drops, someone has to stick to him. Jones, you hold your position in the anchor role — so Mateo, that’s your job. You track that run every single time.”

He shifted his marker to the center-left. ”And watch Şahin’s long shots,” Magath continued, his voice dropping into a serious, warning tone. ”Nobody lets him settle on the ball anywhere near our box. I mean it — do not give him a clear look at goal. Letting him launch that left foot from twenty-five meters out is as dangerous as giving away a free kick. So treat it like one.”

He went through Götze’s movement, Lewandowski’s positioning, Großkreutz’s tendency to cut inside from the right wing despite being a natural wide player. The amount of information was substantial. Some of it would survive contact with the match, some wouldn’t. Professional players understood this. They took what they could use and let the rest go.

In the locker room before the walk out, Magath stopped at the end of his tactical brief and looked at the room.

”Two years,” he said. ”That’s how long it’s been since we beat them. Here.” He paused. ”They call this fixture the Ruhr Day of Pity. That’s their name for it.” He held the pause. ”I’d like to give them different memories.”

It wasn’t the most combustible pre-match speech anyone in the room had ever heard. Huntelaar was nodding. Jones was looking at his hands. Per Kluge had the careful expression of someone taking in information rather than emotion.

Uchida, from the back of the room, said something in Japanese that carried the general energy of a war cry.

Nobody understood it.

The translator, a young club staffer who had been visibly hoping this wouldn’t happen, offered a version of it in German. It landed awkwardly. Uchida looked at him. The translator shrugged apologetically.

There was a brief, slightly surreal silence.

Huntelaar laughed first. Then Annan. Then, eventually, most of the room — the specific release of a locker room full of professionals who had been holding competitive tension for an hour and found an unexpected outlet. Even Magath’s mouth moved in a direction that wasn’t quite a smile but was adjacent to one.

Mateo opened the system during the noise and confirmed the Partner Card binding: Jones, pre-match. The card activated. Jones, two seats away, flexed his right hand without quite knowing why.

He’d decided early in the week. Jones was the right choice for the derby — not for the passing precision the card enabled, but for the physical protection it provided. If Dortmund spent the match targeting Mateo the way Twente had, Jones would be a different kind of obstacle with the 20% boost. Faster recovery, better positioning, harder to get around.

Besides — Jones never asked questions.

The Veltins-Arena was full an hour before kickoff.

Not full in the technical sense — there were still supporters filtering through the concourses, programmes being bought, the last of the fifty-four thousand making their way to seats. But the noise was already there, the specific pre-match noise of a home crowd that had been building toward this for a week and had now arrived at the moment. Schalke’s anthem was playing on the PA and being sung back by the stands in the way it only got sung back for occasions that felt like they had something to prove.

Dortmund’s away section, one stand only, was surrounded by security on three sides and producing its own noise that didn’t mix with the home crowd’s sound — two separate sounds in the same building, not quite cancelling each other, not quite harmonising.

In the tunnel, both sets of players looked forward.

Mateo glanced across at the Dortmund line. He’d done his preparation — footage, analysis, Magath’s briefings. He’d noted Kagawa’s drop, Götze’s movement, the specific spacing between Bender and Şahin in the double pivot. He knew what they liked to do and where the patterns were.

What you couldn’t fully prepare for was seeing it in real time at full intensity, in a stadium like this, against a team that had won six straight and hadn’t fully understood yet that it was possible to lose.

The referee checked his watch.

The line moved.

Dortmund came out at pace.

Fweet—!

Lewandowski tapped back to Kagawa immediately from the kickoff, the familiar Dortmund rhythm establishing itself before Schalke had fully settled — quick, direct, pressing high, no interest in building slowly. Großkreutz pushed forward on the right. Götze moved centrally from the left. The positional interplay that Klopp had built across the season, the collective intelligence of twenty-two-year-olds who had been running this same system together for three years, was immediately visible in how naturally the patterns moved.

Kagawa received from Schmelzer and turned. Mateo was tracking him from the kickoff, as instructed: when Kagawa drops, follow.

Kagawa felt the pressure, hesitated a half-beat longer than he would have liked, and played it back.

Not a meaningful win for Schalke. But a signal established: Kagawa would have to work harder in the centre than he had in the six previous games where the opposing AM had been assigned to guard their own defensive shape rather than press him specifically.

Großkreutz received on the right flank from Şahin and drove at Schmitz. Fast, low to the ground, the kind of wide player who used physical intensity rather than technical trickery. He pushed the ball outside and was about to cross when a blue figure arrived from the centre of the pitch.

Mateo’s slide tackle caught the ball cleanly, taking it out of play for a throw-in but not before the contact had taken Großkreutz’s legs as well.

The Veltins-Arena reacted before the referee’s whistle had finished — not a defensive play, exactly, but the crowd registering something it hadn’t expected: their seventeen-year-old midfield player was in position to make that challenge.

Magath, at the touchline, stared.

When did he get there? That was a centre-left position. Mateo was supposed to be tracking Kagawa through the middle. He’d covered forty metres in five seconds to beat Großkreutz to the byline.

Magath chewed on that for a second, pushed the thought aside, and went right back to calculating the team’s defensive shape.

The match found its rhythm over the next fifteen minutes — a genuine contest, neither side dominating, the energy high and the transitions fast. Jones was physical and confident in a way that made Dortmund’s press slightly more expensive than it usually was. Per Kluge was covering ground efficiently. Farfán on the right was competing with Götze in a series of tight one-on-ones that Götze was winning more often than not, but not decisively.

In the 23rd minute, Sven Bender played it to Kagawa dropping into midfield.

Mateo was already moving.

He’d read the ball — watched Bender’s weight shift before the pass left his foot, made the calculation of where Kagawa would receive, started the run while the ball was still in the air. By the time Kagawa had controlled it and turned, Mateo was already in front of him.

He went straight to ground. His left foot sliced in, making clean contact and poking the ball directly into Farfán’s path, before Farfán instantly snapped a quick return pass right back to him.

Kagawa, briefly wrong-footed, turned immediately and pressed back. He was fast — faster than Mateo, particularly over short distances — and he reached him in three strides. Mateo felt the close and planted his left foot on top of the ball, dragging it back sharply as Kagawa’s right foot swept through the space where the ball had been. The drag-back created a half-turn, Mateo’s body pivoting through to face forward.

Kagawa’s momentum had carried him past.

One touch forward. Farfán wide right, ball delivered. Farfán drove forward without hesitation, Piszczek tracking him but a stride behind. The overlap was on. Farfán played it inside to Mateo, who had continued his run from the drag-back.

The overlay.

Dortmund’s shape had pushed high — both centre-backs forward of the halfway line, Şahin and Bender in the centre, the full-backs wide. The space behind them was the open channel Magath had been waiting for all week.

Red line. Left side. 89%.

Huntelaar had started his diagonal run the moment Mateo had played the drag-back — reading the counter before it had resolved, his legs carrying the specific conviction of a striker who knew exactly what was coming next.

Outside of Mateo’s left foot. The ball rose from the pitch and arced over Dortmund’s entire defensive line, dropping into the space between Schmelzer and the Dortmund goal.

Huntelaar arrived.

Weidenfeller came off his line. Huntelaar waited one beat and slid it low to the right of the onrushing keeper.

SWISH!

1–0.

The Veltins-Arena produced the kind of noise that had been building since morning and needed a specific moment to release.

Huntelaar ran to the near corner flag. His teammates found him. In the Dortmund away section, a stunned silence had replaced the yellow roar of sixty seconds ago.

On the opposite touchline, Klopp had his arms folded, his expression unchanged.

The match had twenty-two minutes left in the half.

It was very far from over.

Plz Drop Some Power Stones.
