Death… And Me

Chapter 3949: What Are Your Interests?

”What have you done?” Celis was the first to ask.

Caladara got up, preparing to leave. She acted as if everything was working just fine. ”To you, nothing really. What you got there was just a private message to the expert who covered your outsider traits and sealed your memories. Only the expert who helped you will be able to identify what I did, and I left my energy signature behind, so that expert will know where to look for me.”

Then, she began to make her way out of the living room.

”Se-Senior Caladara, what about everything else?” Ximao couldn’t help but stop her. ”The Judgemental Eye, the Balance, you know-”

Caladara raised her hand, making Ximao stop. ”There are four of them, which is unprecedented. However, they weren’t born in the Werdlem Empire, so the rules of the Judgemental Eye don’t apply to them. Sure, I should have killed them because they are outsider, but I can’t.”

”You can’t?” Ximao was confused.

”The seal in their memories, it was put there by someone much stronger than me. No doubt it was the same expert who covered their outsider traits. Do you se where I’m coming from?” Caladara asked in response.

Ximao was still confused, so Roan ended up answering instead. ”Let me guess, to cover our traits, you must be someone from the Werdlem Empire. And since you can’t read our memories because of the seal, it is not just someone much stronger than you, but also someone in a much higher position.”

Rean continued from there. ”Someone like that could probably even influence the Werdlem Empire as a whole, and yet, this expert got us here for some reason. It truly isn’t a good idea to get on the bad side of whoever is backing us up. Are we correct?”

”I can see already that your talent wasn’t the only reason for this expert to intervene on your behalf and cover your outsider traits,” said Caladara. ”Yes, you are correct, and I’m very, very interested to find out who is behind you. Just do whatever you have been doing so far, and pretend nothing happened. I will not touch you, nor will I report anything regarding what happened here today. Chances are we will never meet again since your backer will come to see me sooner or later.”

There was another reason why Caladara took that approach: the twins’ group’s Werdlem IDs. Just like everyone else, she firmly believed no one could create fake identities in the Werdlem Network. Since their ID showed no issues, it was obvious that their backer was truly, truly someone in a very high position, capable of giving them those Werdlem Empire IDs. Of course, there was no such thing here. It was all thanks to the system.

In the end, you couldn’t blame Caladara for her wrong thoughts. Anyone else in her position would have reached a similar conclusion. In the end, most experts would first try to cover their own backs before anything else.

Caladara turned to Ximao. ”If even I do not dare to touch them, you’d better make sure you don’t cause trouble either. The balance is important, but at the end of the day, there are only four of them, even if four appearing at once is a miracle. I won’t do anything to you either, since I would need to report why you were taken down. Who knows, perhaps you will gain a chance to go up after all of this. I don’t have such a power, but the one backing these guys likely does.”

She once again made her way out. ”Sigh... over fifty years to come down here, and another fifty plus to go up. I truly hate this position.”

Finally, Caladara left the room, disappearing from the Divine Military Academy. No one saw when she opened a Spatial Gate and left through it.

In the room, the twins’ group and Ximao were the only ones remaining.

Ximao felt like he had lost several thousand years of lifespan. Well, he is in the Divinity Realm, so as long as he isn’t killed directly, he is pretty much immortal anyway. ”Someone in a position even higher than Caladara...” he murmured, glancing at the twins’ group. He still had many questions in his head, but with the ’seal’ in the twins’ group’s memories, he knew he would get no answer.

Naturally, he wasn’t the only one with questions in his mind. Since they were already there, the twins’ group might as well try to get as much information as possible from Ximao. ”Care to explain what this was all about?”

”Explain?” Ximao snorted. ”And why should I tell outsiders anything?”

Rean shrugged. ”Who knows? We might be able to help each other, don’t you think? As Caladara said, it seems like we have quite the big shot in our books.”

”Do you mean the big shot that brought you to the Werdlem Empire against your will? The same one who left you on your own and disappeared? That big shot?” Ximao wasn’t an idiot.

”Ouch... that hurts,” Rean scratched the back of his head. ”Still, it is not like you have much to lose, now, do you? In the end, we don’t know what that guy wants from us, but he must have some plans for us. It wouldn’t hurt to speak a little bit nicely about you if we do meet this person again in the future. You want to go up, don’t you? A chance is still a chance.”

Ximao narrowed his eyes. ”Whatever. I did help you by breaking the Judgemental Eye that day for this same reason. What do you want to know?”

Roan took the initiative. ”First, what is this shit about the Judgemental Eye? Golden Echo? Judgment Protocol? Balance?”

”Wait, wait, wait,” Ximao stopped him. ”Those are too many questions at once. Also, I don’t mind answering your questions, but that won’t be for free. We will be doing an exchange here. What can you offer? I know you said you might find this backer of yours one day and talk good of me, but there are no guarantees there. For now, I want something more tangible. Sure this guy left something good for you.”

Rean, Roan, Kentucky, and Celis looked at each other. Truth be told, they had a lot to offer. Just the Blood Reformation from the System would already be a heaven-defying bargaining ship.

Truth be told, Roan preferred this kind of conversation. Once you stand to gain something in a deal, you are more likely to give what the other party wants back. ”We have many things. It all depends on what you are interested in.”
