Death… And Me

Chapter 3905: Perhaps a Mistake

Rean touched her head, and a gentle wave of Light Element entered. At the same time, Rean’s voice echoed in Wisfreya’s mind through Divine Sense. ’Follow my words. To prevent any damage to you and your self-awareness, we need to separate all memories and will from the right part of the soul. Normally, when we are born and grow, all memories are stored in the brain. But as our cultivation increases, our souls get stronger, and they become able to store the memories as well. Eventually, due to our long lifespans, the soul takes this role entirely.’

’That’s how high-level experts manage to keep their memories during reincarnation. They seal their memories just before death. I’m not sure if this Universe allows this kind of thing, but there are definitely many methods out there.’

Rean continued. ’What I will have you do is to control your soul so you can redirect all your memories and will. You will leave a tiny space completely free, pure Soul Energy and nothing else. Take this seriously. Dragon bloodlines are inherently weaker in matters of the soul, and you are no different. This will be more difficult for you than most. Of course, I’m here, and I will use my power to guide you in this process.’

’Still, the first time is definitely the most dangerous. It doesn’t matter what I tell you. You won’t truly understand what it means until you feel it yourself. Now, open your soul to me and let my Light Element flow.’

Wisfreya nodded and did as Rean asked. Soon, that Light Element flowed inside, followed by Rean’s Soul Power and Divine Energy. They were very gentle, no ill intentions, to the point that Wisfreya actually felt quite comfortable.

’Focus,’ Rean’s voice echoed again. ’Don’t let the feeling of ease take over. Now, you will feel my Light Element spread around your soul, and especially at the Soul Energy that is responsible for your memories and will. This is the first time that you will perceive your soul as if it is two separate entities, but this is just an illusion created by me so you will know where to concentrate.’

Rean waited for a while, letting Wisfreya get used to the feeling. Finally, she reached a state where he was confident he could press forward. ’Good. Now, I will retract my Light Element from a corner of your soul, just a tiny, small place. You will still perceive it as if you have two distinct parts in there, and that will help you tell what you should drive away from that corner. Let’s start.’

With that, Wisfreya could tell how to drive her memories and will away from the right location. She didn’t get it right at first, though. ”This is difficult...”

Rean nodded. ’It certainly is. But that’s why I’m here. Let’s try again. We won’t stop until I’m sure you have driven away everything that shouldn’t be in that corner. Don’t try to force things. Take it slowly and steady. We will not even be over today, but time isn’t an issue.’

Rean wasn’t wrong. Wisfreya made many, many attempts, and the day passed in a flash. It wasn’t until the night of the next day that Rean finally saw what he wanted. ’Alright, that’s it. Now, focus on leaving that corner empty of your memories and will. If you manage to maintain it for an hour straight, we can jump into the next part.’

Wisfreya didn’t manage to do so. After just a few minutes, she lost control of her will, and memories once again spread evenly. ”One hour will be even harder...” she murmured.

’Considering your natural weakness, you are already doing great. Seems like Roan’s cultivation technique helped you a lot in that front,’ Rean was quite satisfied with the result so far.

Time passed. One day, two days, three days... Wisfreya got better and better, even if it was a kind of ability that would have no use in real life. Nonetheless, she managed to get that tiny corner empty for an hour on the sixth day. ”I’ve done it! What no-”

*Harrch!*

”Ahhhhhhhhhrrrrrggggggg!”

Too bad Rean didn’t give her a chance to finish her question. The moment he saw the chance, he instantly controlled Roan’s Dark Element and cut away that tiny part of Wisfreya’s Soul, pulling it out of her head.

”Sister Orb!”

[On it!]

Sister Orb used the same method that was used to seal the Abyssal Beast’s Soul. With that, that tiny piece of Wisfreya’s Soul would never disperse, and it would be complemented in the future with more parts until enough Soul Energy was gathered to make up for an entire new soul. The only difference was that it would never generate a will of its own with the seal in place.

Wisfreya held her head with both her hands. Foliana had been providing her with the near-death training since she became Wisfreya’s Master. As Roan said, if you think you are going to die, then the training is working, and Foliana definitely followed that philosophy to the end. The amount of pain she felt in the hands of the Verjansy Country in the past was nothing compared to what Foliana made her go through. Yet, the moment a piece of her soul was cut out, now, that was the real deal! It made the suffering she had in Foliana’s hands look like a kid’s play.

Rean quickly harnessed his Light Element to help heal the injury to Wisfreya’s soul. Unlike physical wounds, he couldn’t eliminate the pain associated with a soul injury. His Light Element was effective in facilitating the healing process, but it could only gradually ease the pain.

It took a bit of time for Wisfreya to finally get a hold of herself, even though her pain was nearly unbearable. ”Coul-couldn’t you have warned me ahead of time?”

Rean shook his head in response. ”I’ve learned over the years that it is actually better to not let the other side know in many situations. If I had told you, you might have gotten nervous and released your will and memories back into that corner just as I was cutting it out. If that happened, then your very sense of self might have been implicated forever.”

Rean then looked at the sealed piece of soul, satisfied. ”But rejoice. It went perfectly well. We will do this twice a year. In fact, with the cultivation technique Roan made for you and my Light Element, you would recover in three months, one month if I truly put my full attention into it. However, the constant cutting and regrowth might cause some side effects if we do it too often. Thus, half a year to be sure you will reach the end of this deal as yourself.”

”H-Half a year?!” Wisfreya was young, but even she thought it was too little. She was still feeling the intense pain, and it would last for several days. ”Ca-Can we change the deal? You know, I can stay with you guys for two hundred or so years, maybe more, and you do it only once per year, maybe two?”

Rean shook his head in response. ”We will be long gone when that time comes. Half a year is the most we can stretch. Anyway, your part is done. I’ll see you in three months to retake some blood.”

Foliana saw that and sighed in relief. Then, she patted Wisfreya’s head again. ”The important thing is that you are fine. Well, you might die when we start to take your training more seriously, but at least it won’t be because of the soul, which truly hurts a lot.”

Wisfreya felt like crying. Was that how Foliana attempted to comfort her? No, wait! Did she mean they haven’t been taking the training seriously until now? ’Perhaps accepting this deal was a mistake...’ Those were Wisfreya’s most correct thoughts in a while.
