Armed Train in the Apocalypse

After a long time, Su Huan finally suppressed the autonomous deductions of his brain.

”Then why tell me this news? Aren’t you afraid I won’t go?”

”The general said that every Tier Four and above Evolver is a spark; not every spark will shine brightly, but the flame that can blaze across the wilderness must come from among the sparks.”

When saying this, Qiu Chong finally revealed a smile, filled with determination and boldness.

Su Huan suddenly froze, and the image of that hunched old man and several segments of words buried deep in his heart surged in his mind.

”They encountered difficulties, go help them...”

”Comrade—”

”If these supplies are intact, then use them.”

”Survive, use all your strength to evolve.”

”We have no way out.”

Su Huan closed his eyes but could still feel the images of those sixty-seven hours playing before his eyes, the roar of troop transports, the running footsteps of soldiers, the sound of guns rubbing against camouflage echoed repeatedly around him.

Four years of life-and-death torment, a year and a half of pursuit, now it seemed everything was within reach, yet nothing was clear.

If the answer at the end is not what he wanted, then what was this long journey after all?

What were those ordinary people who died like wild dogs in the twelve major districts?!

Waves of questioning rose from his heart.

An unnamable inner fire burned him with liver and gall torn, his hands wanted to clench, but he couldn’t even discern the enemy’s appearance, the mysteries within the Eternal Night, the silhouette on the throne, those bizarre natural disasters, what exactly, what the hell is controlling all this!

Su Huan abruptly opened his eyes, his pitch-black pupils turned like the starry sky in reverse, strands of starlight extinguished into void.

The momentum seething like a volcano seeped out, making the whole base tremble under this anger.

But it was only for a brief moment, so brief that even nearby Qiu Chong thought it was his illusion.

But he knew that was Su Huan’s ability, only people like him deserve the general’s entrustment.

”Is this all the information you know?”

”Without reservation.”

”For what remains, I’ll ask Yang Cunyi personally!”

Su Huan’s voice was ice-cold, devoid of any emotion, regardless of how much truth the other party said, everything needed to be traversed through the Eternal Night Zone to get answers!

When Su Huan came out, He Jie clearly felt that the train conductor seemed a bit off, the question on his lips was forcibly held back.

Huayang was even more perceptive, shrinking behind He Jie’s tall body.

The two silently followed behind the train conductor.

After walking an unknown distance, Su Huan looked up, the snow tunnel in front was lifted directly by surging energy, the Armed Train hovered mid-air not far away.

Although there was no exchange, He Jie felt that the trip to the Wind Snow Zone was likely coming to an end.

Upon returning to the train, Hu Shuo happened to arrive and reported, ”We heard about the rebellion over at Tie Songlin Camp and immediately dealt with it, but it was a step late, all supplies will be reissued a batch, additionally, they want to make a solitary apology to you.”

”Get out.”

Hu Shuo paused, meticulously jotting down the commander’s order, then moved all remaining unimportant matters to later.

Quietly retreating, he saw He Jie grinning mischievously on the side and said helplessly, ”Couldn’t you give me a heads up?”

”Anyway, it’s not aimed at you.”

Hu Shuo shook his head, asking under his breath, ”The operation didn’t go smoothly?”

He Jie hesitated for a moment, ”Smooth, very smooth, smoother than any previous operation, because in front of him there’s no room for tricks.”

”Then...”

He Jie waved his large hand, ”Don’t ask, I’m not clear either, but fear that in the coming time, something tremendous might happen.”

Back on Su Huan’s side in the dining car, he saw Yu Yue like a joyful little sparrow, packing bottles and jars there.

Instead of wiping them and putting them back as usual, she packed them into a marching bag.

Next to it was a huge suitcase, not knowing what was inside, even the electromagnetic sniper rifle was placed on the counter.

Su Huan furrowed his brow, ”What’s this for?”

Yu Yue paused her actions, with a hint of joy, ”To your home?”

Then appeared somewhat shy, ”I want to showcase some skills to your aunt, if possible.”

Su Huan blinked, finally recalling this matter.

A couple of sudden sentences dragged his mind out of complex deduction with some distraction, gazing lost outside the window where the wind started up.

...

The swirling snowstorm crackled like firecrackers, the train conductor who hadn’t sat for a moment set off again.

This time, the team was significantly larger, even Yu Jing who had been cooped in the lab tagged along, Lin Xi originally wanted to come as well but was persuaded back by Lin Jin for being too weak.

Along with them was Xiaoba.

Lin Jin watched from the window as the group moved further away, sighed softly.

The siblings, how could he not notice his sister’s intentions?

The conductor was someone worthy of following, but standing beside him was very difficult, he didn’t believe in fate, but in his sister’s matter, he hesitated.

Snow was soft, a normal person might sink with each step, wanting to walk normally had to roll.

But for this team of minimum Tier Two Evolvers, just a bit of leverage was enough.

The snowstorm was fierce, blinding people’s eyes, but Yu Yue was excited all the way, chirping about trivial concerns like the ingredients she brought, worried Su Huan’s parents from the north wouldn’t like her skills and indirectly probing info about Su Huan’s parents.

Following vague memories, Su Huan narrated calmly.

”He was from the last batch of eighties generation, spent school years obsessed with novels, dropped out of high school, had no skills, went to shovel fire train skins, nine yuan per ton.”

Yu Yue showed a hint of sympathy, she was a generation of zero zeros, by the time she grew up Donghuang had completely risen, in economy, technology, military... all rapidly advancing, long stood among the world’s forefront, labor work was distant from her.

She didn’t know how long it took to load a ton of coal, yet it barely matched a cheap cup of milk tea.

”What happened later?”

”Later came automation, no place for hard labor.”

Yu Yue slightly opened her mouth in worry, but thinking Su Huan could attend university normally, his family conditions might have improved.

Yu Jing subtly listened to their chat from behind, her eyes dim, pondering unknown thoughts.

Though the group walked in snow, their speed was rapid.

Soon they reached Su Huan’s memory of his hometown, near the Northern Camp.

”Is this a town? Such a weird name, why called Northern Camp?”

Yu Yue looked around, the tallest building in the city was merely a six-storey complex, snow unable to cling, even shady spots revealed much of the roads, snow clung to surrounding structures like slides.

”In the beginning, to guard against the Northern Alliance, troops turned directly into farms, many places upheld military district names, not even counted as a town.”

Su Huan gazed at familiar views, eyes carrying slight nostalgia.

His initially bad mood vanished, even a sense of coming-home fear arose, tinged with tension.

The most bustling area in the Northern Camp was merely a street, some selling grilled cold noodles, a supermarket, sides of the street was a square, practically small, merely tens of meters long, now appeared cramped, yet in his memory this square was massive.

The plaza on the right had a tree entirely frozen in the snow.

”Su Huan?”

Perhaps noticing Su Huan’s daze, Yu Yue followed his gaze seeing only a bare stump, exposed over a meter above the snow, with only one barren trunk.

”That tree is ninety-six years old, same age as my grandfather.”

Su Huan explained softly.

The group continued downward.

Soon, surrounding buildings vanished, most low-rises buried under snow, few rooftops showed, resembling stepping into wilderness.

”Not in Northern Camp?”

”My family lived at a spot called ’edge’, sort of attached to the city, still some way towards the edge.”

”The front one is it.”
