Worthless Profession: Dragon Tamer

Chapter 1173, Why Can I Not Absorb the Ancient God Power?

Translator: Silavin

Sure enough, after receiving the premium treatment that only someone of Lu Fan’s calibre could provide, the Devouring Dragon King’s Attributes and power exploded upward in an instant. The entire Dragon came roaring back to life, once again suppressing the Slaughter Ancient God.

One Dragon and one Serpent engaged in a titanic battle that filled the Heavens. Combat Power of that magnitude was something ordinary combatants could scarcely hope to involve themselves in.

Even Lu Fan kept his distance, using Dragon Language Replication to copy Bao Bao’s Skills, contributing with Lightning Magic Attack from a safe range rather than charging in to engage the Slaughter Ancient God in close-quarters combat.

Lu Fan’s role for now was simply to play Support, assist the Devouring Dragon King in suppressing the Slaughter Ancient God, protect the safety of Ye Wuxian and the others, and allow them to contribute some Damage Output of their own.

The primary force in this battle still had to be the Devouring Dragon King.

Though the Devouring Dragon King possessed no Ancient God Power, as one of the strongest of this era, her current strength outstripped Lu Fan’s by no small margin with all the Buffs. particularly when it came to genuine, brutal combat.

The Devouring Dragon King did not disappoint Lu Fan and the others, either. Bolstered by a variety of Dragon Language Magic Enhancements and the assistance of the other Pet Dragons and Lu Fan’s party, she maintained a steady and commanding advantage, suppressing the Slaughter Ancient God more than once.

Even as the Slaughter Ancient God continued to restore his wounds and bolster his strength without pause, he still could not overcome the Devouring Dragon King. The injuries across his body grew heavier and heavier, and his own recovery capability was already quietly beginning to fall behind the rate at which he was taking damage.

That said, the Slaughter Ancient God Power to grow in battle was frightening.

Watching the battle remain firmly in the Devouring Dragon King’s control, yet seeing the Slaughter Ancient God grow progressively stronger, Lu Fan could not help but feel a creeping unease.

“He must be quickly killed. We cannot afford to drag this out any longer!” Lu Fan called out in a raised voice. “His power grows with every passing second. If we cannot end this fight, his strength will eventually surpass yours, and things will become worse.”

“Do you think I need you to tell me that!?” the Devouring Dragon King snapped back without any grace whatsoever. “Everything you know, I saw within you as well. The problem is not that I do not want to kill him. He is already this powerful, and I seriously cannot bring the fight to a swift conclusion!”

The Devouring Dragon King’s words made Lu Fan realise that the situation before them was not as optimistic as he had thought.

It might appear as though the Devouring Dragon King held a decisive advantage, but being able to best the Slaughter Ancient God was an altogether different matter from being able to kill him.

Right now, in their face-off, the Devouring Dragon King held the upper hand.

But in a true fight to the death, the Devouring Dragon King did not possess the ability to actually kill the Slaughter Ancient God.

The moment their confrontation stretched on longer, the Slaughter Ancient God Power would grow to the point of absolute dominance.

At that point, all that would remain for the Devouring Dragon King was death.

It was precisely at that moment that the Devouring Dragon King seemed to want to prove something. She suddenly seized upon a gap in the Slaughter Ancient God’s guard, her Dragon Claw locking onto one of the Slaughter Ancient God’s heads and tearing into it.

Then, the muscles across the Devouring Dragon King’s body coiled and surged, and she exerted force, wrenching one of the Slaughter Ancient God’s heads clean off with brute strength alone.

*Splat!*

In an instant, scalding blood sprayed in every direction. The Slaughter Ancient God shrieked in agony, his body writhing violently as he churned out gale after gale of powerful wind, forcing everyone nearby to keep their distance.

The Devouring Dragon King seized the opportunity to retreat, glancing at the still-roaring head in her claws, then promptly clamped her jaws shut and bit straight into him.

The crunch of the hardened head shattering between the Devouring Dragon King’s teeth rang out with the sound of metal splintering.

After chewing only twice, however, the Devouring Dragon King spat the Slaughter Ancient God’s flesh and blood right back out with a resounding *Peh!*, cursing loudly, “What on earth is this? It tastes revolting enough on its own, but on top of that, I cannot seem to absorb any Ancient God Power from him.”

“So, it truly is the case that the only way to obtain Ancient God Power is to seize their Divine Seat?”

“But that does not seem quite right, either. Didn’t that Serpent from that Dungeon Instance manage to obtain Ancient God Power from some other Ancient God at some point? I really ought to have come out then and asked how she did it. I am a Dragon King who can improve my own strength through Devouring others. By what right can that thing accomplish something I cannot?”

“There must be some technique to it. If I could master it, I might just be able to hunt other Ancient Gods with a lower degree of awakening and claim more than one Divine Seat….”

Clearly, everything that had transpired with Lu Fan in the Flaming Hell Dungeon Instance had been observed by the Devouring Dragon King. And so now, she was attempting to see whether she could, like devouring other Dragons, also devour an Ancient God, thereby obtaining its Ancient God Power.

Her ambition was destined to come to nothing, however, because Ancient God Power was a force that transcended this world’s very Principles, much like how Ye Wuxian’s flames could burn through everything, regardless of whether it was water, metal, earth, or any other Elemental Skill or material.

The Devouring Dragon King was formidably strong, without question, but she was ultimately still a product of this era, and simply lacked enough power to transcended this era’s Principles.

As for why the Purgatory Overlord had previously been able to obtain Ancient God Power, the primary reason was that a certain Ancient God had long since proactively channelled his own power into the Purgatory Overlord’s body, granting her the prerequisite vessel capable of storing Ancient God Power.

And so it was that the Purgatory Overlord had been able to turn the tables entirely, reaching back and draining that Ancient God dry on the spot.

Altering the Devouring Dragon King’s body so that she too could absorb Ancient God Power was something Lu Fan theoretically should have been capable of doing.

However, this was rather similar in nature to creating an Ancient God Slave, and Lu Fan had absolutely no idea, at present, how to wield his own Ancient God Power in order to transform another person into an Ancient God Slave.

Moreover, he had no desire whatsoever to learn that particular ability.

After all, the purpose for which he had come to possess Ancient God Power was solely to hunt other Ancient Gods and preserve this era. Nothing more.

“Stop wasting time.” Lu Fan thought it through and spoke up of his own accord. “If you want Ancient God Power, once we kill it and strip away its Divine Seat, I will naturally fulfil your wish. But if we lose this battle, forget about Ancient God Power, it is your life that will likely be forfeit!”

“Do you think I need you to tell me that!?” the Devouring Dragon King snorted with contempt. She hurled the Slaughter Ancient God’s severed head to the ground, then unleashed her Dragon Breath upon it, incinerating it entirely in one breath, leaving it no chance to reattach itself to the Slaughter Ancient God’s body.

After all, the Ancient God Power expended in regrowing a head from scratch was an entirely different matter from the power needed to reattach a head that still existed.

If she could force the Slaughter Ancient God to expend more Ancient God Power, then naturally, forcing him to expend more Ancient God Power was the better course.

At that moment, a more vast and terrifying aura erupted from the Slaughter Ancient God’s body. Evidently, the earlier injuries had elevated its power by yet another considerable degree.
