When She Stops Being Dramatic

Chapter 104: Chapter 55: The Scorned Wife of the 1950s (55)

”You don’t have to be so careful. We’re in our own home. Who cares about her?” He patted her back and added, half-soothingly, half-jokingly, ”We just got a new front door. You think she can knock this one down too?”

Lin Jin chuckled softly and nestled into his embrace. They had been talking for a while, but neither of them felt sleepy.

A lot had been happening at home recently. They had found An an apprenticeship with a vehicle fleet.

The old lady was also pestering the couple to find a partner for Jingjing. Every other day, she would harp on about her and her granddaughter’s contributions: helping during the postpartum confinement, taking care of the baby, making soup, and washing diapers. She insisted that even if they hadn’t earned merit, they’d certainly put in the hard work.

Anyway, there was drama every single day. On top of that, Lin Jin and Wang Xianbing’s daughter was a handful. The tiny little thing already demanded to be held, and just being held wasn’t enough—you had to walk around with her.

They wanted to be firm, but the little baby would just cry her heart out, her wails echoing demonically throughout the entire hallway.

Lin Jin felt that the old lady and Jingjing had deliberately spoiled the child, fostering this bad habit.

The old lady, however, said that city girls were delicate, and that the daughter would turn out just like her mother.

Lin Jin, determined, decided to break her daughter of the habit. After deliberately going to each floor to give her neighbors a heads-up, she let the baby cry without picking her up.

As a result, the baby cried until her face turned blue. By the time Wang Xianbing came home from work, her throat was hoarse, but she was still howling.

The whole family couldn’t win against one baby. They had to admit defeat and go back to holding and coaxing her.

On top of that, the couple had been fighting recently, almost to the point of a complete fallout. They hadn’t been intimate for a long time.

Now, warm in their bed, both of them were starting to feel aroused. They controlled their sounds and movements, which added a different kind of thrill.

Just as they were getting into the swing of things, the baby suddenly exploded out of nowhere with a howl.

The two of them jumped, startled.

Wang Xianbing’s face darkened. ’Only half a minute and I already...’

Meanwhile, Zhu Yun was in her room watching a livestream. She couldn’t help but clutch her blanket and let out a silent, gleeful laugh.

Perhaps sensing her emotional surge, the baby in her belly gave her a spirited kick.

”Alright, alright, little one. Are you telling Mommy not to stay up late?” She gently poked her belly, feeling the baby turn over. The wondrous feeling inside her was simply indescribable.

Staring at her bulging belly, Zhu Yun found it hard to imagine that a small life was gestating inside.

And to think that in another three months, the little one would come into this world. ’It’s so magical!’

Because Lin Jin had something on her mind, she woke up at the same time the next night to get a drink of water. Coincidentally, just as she stepped out of her bedroom, she heard whispering from the apartment across the hall.

After watching Chu Shenyu leave through the window, she immediately went back into the room and gently shook Wang Xianbing. ”Xianbing, is something happening at the factory? This is the second day in a row that Mr. Chu has left at this hour.”

”If he’s that busy with work at the research institute, aren’t the ten-odd hours he spends there during the day enough? Does he really have to sneak out at night without a sound?”

”Nothing at the factory is ever a small matter. You two work for the same company, haven’t you heard any rumors?”

Wang Xianbing couldn’t help but narrow his eyes.

He came from a humble background and had gotten here on his own merit, so of course he was ambitious. He couldn’t be content with being a mere deputy director, even if it was a position others had to work a decade or more to attain.

But the factory was huge, with numerous subsidiary units. Each department had many directors, let alone deputy directors!

College graduates seemed like a novelty, but the machinery factory wasn’t short on talent. This year, more than two hundred had joined the factory, all from prestigious universities. With so many graduates, they weren’t as sought-after as they used to be.

If he didn’t work harder, he would soon lose the advantage he had from being at the factory for a few years.

”Don’t worry about this,” Wang Xianbing said in a low voice. ”And don’t mention it to anyone else. I’ll apply for the night shift tomorrow.”

Lin Jin smiled lightly and nodded, the darkness of the room providing the perfect cover for her triumphant expression.

She continued, as if just making small talk, ”I don’t even have to leave the house to know how chaotic it is outside over a mouthful of grain. I’ve heard that in some places, people are prying open doors at night to steal food from other homes or from the cafeteria warehouse.”

”It makes me so nervous. We have snacks, milk powder, and eggs at home, and we have an old woman and a child in the house.”

Wang Xianbing patted her back. ”Don’t worry. Security at our factory is pretty good. The guards at the gate aren’t just for show. They’re all carrying real weapons.”

”We know all our neighbors. Even the ones across the hall. If something really happened, we couldn’t let our little disagreements get in the way. We’d have to present a united front.”

Lin Jin’s eyes darted around for a moment before she smiled and nodded again. ”You’re right. Our factory is different from the others. I heard that back when everyone else was feasting, our cafeteria was saving up all the extra food.”

”Look at the other work units—they’ve all started eating watery porridge, but we’re still eating solid food.”
