The Roach God

He picked the meeting point himself — a stretch of open pipe exactly on the border, visible from both sides, nothing to hide behind and nothing to defend. If this went badly, he wanted it to go badly somewhere that couldn’t be mistaken for an ambush. He brought Khrr and no one else; a delegation of thirty-seven roaches would read as an invasion no matter how peacefully he meant it, and a delegation of one read, he hoped, as exactly what it was — a god willing to show up in person.

The rat that came to meet him was large enough that for one unpleasant second every animal instinct left over in his roach body screamed predator, flee, and it took real, deliberate effort to hold his ground the way he had against the spider. It stopped a body-length away and simply looked at him, whiskers working, and Sacha understood — the way he’d understood Khrr’s attention days before it had a name — that something aware was looking back.

What happened next wasn’t speech, and it wasn’t quite thought either. It was closer to the flat bracketed text that had narrated his own life since the crawlspace, except this time it wasn’t reporting a fact about him — it was carrying something from the rat, translated by whatever layer of reality let sparks recognize each other in the first place.

Divine Creature — unranked.

Territory: recent, small.]

There was no venom in it, but there wasn’t warmth either. It read the way a senior physician might size up an intern on their first week — not cruel, just entirely unimpressed, already halfway to moving on. Sacha felt something old and stubborn flare up under the assessment, the same thing that used to get him through double shifts nobody thought he’d survive.

Unranked, he thought back, deliberately, aiming the thought the same steady way he’d once aimed himself into the gap in the ring, weeks ago now, when the spider had still been the only real problem he had. For now.

He couldn’t be certain the rat received it the way he intended it — this channel, whatever it was, felt thin and imprecise, more like shouting across a canyon than a real conversation. But something in the rat’s posture shifted, a fraction, the ears coming forward instead of flat. Not respect. Attention, maybe. A recalculation.

[Query: intent.]

Two words, and everything rode on how he answered them. He thought about the border he’d spent two days reading, wide and layered and clearly built by something that valued order over conquest, and he made his second real bet since waking up in this body — smaller than the spider, but a bet all the same, because there was no way to verify any of it before he committed.

No claim on your ground, he sent back, as clearly as he could shape the thought. A line, and both sides keep to it. And if either of us ever needs the other, we remember this conversation instead of a war.

The silence that followed felt longer than it probably was. Then, without ceremony, the rat turned and walked back across the border, unhurried, and didn’t look back — which Sacha chose, deliberately, to read as acceptance rather than dismissal, because a hostile answer wouldn’t have needed to walk away calmly at all.

[Border: provisionally recognized. Faith: threshold still nearing.]

It wasn’t the threshold itself — nowhere close, he suspected, if the rat’s flat, unimpressed assessment from a few minutes earlier was anything to go by. But the climb toward it hadn’t stalled either, and after two tense days spent bracing for a war instead of building anything, that alone felt like it mattered. This was real ground, real recognition, the first piece of the world beyond his own crawlspace that had looked at him and chosen not to treat him as prey. Khrr felt something in the exchange too; he could tell from the way it went rigid beside him, antennae flat back, then slowly, cautiously, upright again.

One spider, one border, one conversation with something that could have killed me twice over, Sacha thought, standing in the open pipe with the rat’s scent still fading from the air. And that’s still not enough to stop being nothing. Not yet.

He had no illusions about what he’d actually won today. A ceasefire wasn’t a rank. Recognition wasn’t power. The rat’s assessment — unranked, territory recent and small — was still sitting in his mind exactly as it had landed, and nothing about the last hour had changed a single word of it. What he had was a foothold, the first one that hadn’t come out of a fight, and Sacha had learned a long time ago, on a hundred bad nights in the back of an ambulance, that a foothold wasn’t a victory. It was just the ground you stood on while you worked out how to climb.

What stayed with him on the walk back, more than the border or the bargain, was the shape of the exchange. The rat hadn’t threatened him. It hadn’t needed to. It had simply arrived, measured him, and left — the entire encounter conducted at a level of effort appropriate to reading a notice pinned to a wall. Sacha had spent his whole working life being the person who walked into a room and became the most important thing in it by default, because everyone else in that room was frightened and he wasn’t. Being, instead, the least significant object in someone else’s afternoon was a novel sensation, and he turned it over the whole way home without ever quite deciding how he felt about it.

It didn’t ask what I wanted the ground for, he thought, and that was the detail that actually mattered. It asked what I intended. Those aren’t the same question.

The first one is what you ask a rival. The second is what you ask a neighbour whose behaviour you’re trying to predict for the next several years. Whatever else the rat had decided about him today, it had decided he was going to be around long enough to be worth predicting — and that, Sacha thought, was probably the most valuable thing he’d walked out of that pipe carrying.

He also let himself notice, without saying anything about it aloud even inside his own head, that the rat had come alone.

No escort. No line of bodies waiting in the dark behind it as insurance. Either it was confident enough that it genuinely hadn’t considered the possibility of an ambush, or it was reading him accurately enough to know one wasn’t coming. Both answers said something about the gap between them, and neither answer was flattering.

Fine, he thought. Be unimpressed. Unimpressed neighbours don’t march on you in the night.

He turned back toward the nest, Khrr falling into step beside him, and started thinking, already, about how much further there was still to go before unranked stopped being the first word anyone used to describe him.
