The Roach God

The plan came together over two days, and it came together backward—Sacha found its shape by asking what he already owned that neither power could take from him by acquiring the ground around it, and there was exactly one answer.

We can go places their claims can’t reach and come back before anyone notices we left.

He had known that since the fold.

What he had not done, in fifty-eight days of surviving on it, was use it for anything except his own colony’s escape.

The Ascension wanted to know what it was worth.

The cleanest possible demonstration was not a fight or a speech.

It was doing, once, in the open, the one thing nobody else in this sector could do.

The rat, he thought, and the rest of it assembled itself in under a minute.

Three years holding a position between two powers, offered terms twice, answered neither, because any answer delivered above ground would be read by the side that didn’t get it.

A message carried under the corridor, through ground no census had ever mapped, arriving on the Mother’s side without ever once crossing contested air — that was not a favor.

That was the entire pitch, made real, for the one neighbor who had already understood it before Sacha had.

He put it to Thresh before anyone.

You crossed once, he sent. At speed, bleeding, not looking at anything but the next foothold. But you crossed. Is there anything about the western gaps I don’t have from your first map — anything that changes if the Ascension’s been expanding into that ground for two months?

Thresh considered it for the better part of a day, which Sacha had learned by now meant the beetle was checking its own memory for the difference between what it knew and what it had assumed.

The gaps do not care what claims sit on the surface above them, it sent finally. That was true when I crossed and it will still be true. What changes is what waits at the mouths — and if the Ascension is pricing everything around your old cellar, the western fracture mouth is inside ground somebody is now counting.

So the crossing’s safe. The arrival isn’t.

The crossing was never safe, Thresh sent, with something that might, in a beetle with one antenna, have been the driest thing approaching humor Sacha had heard from it.

You are asking whether the second worst part is now the first worst part. It is.

He put it to Khrr next, because the mission needed someone who could hold independent judgment four days west with no way to ask permission, and only one candidate had ever proven that.

You’d be going back to the west cellar, he laid. Or what’s left of it. I don’t know what the Ascension’s done with the ground since we left.

I know.

I can’t reach you there. Not with anything that works.

Khrr held still for a moment, the way it held still when it was choosing how much of an objection to raise.

Then do not send me blind, it marked. Give me the decision before I leave, all of it, every branch you can think of, and trust the rest to the nineteen days I spent learning to think in a language you do not have.

Sacha sat with that, then did something he had been circling since the border differentiated under Vek’s hand and hadn’t yet let himself try.

The bracketed text had called his Sanctuary differentiating nine days ago, and he had read it as a description of Vek’s authority and stopped there, because that reading required nothing further of him.

He made himself finish the thought now.

A single claim with one hard point was one thing.

A claim with two — his and Vek’s, distinct enough that the Ascension’s own emissary had needed a full afternoon to work out which one had moved the border — was, functionally, two small anchors instead of one large one.

What if there’s a third, he thought, and it isn’t ground at all. What if it’s him.

He had tried to reach Khrr on the first night after the crawlspace and failed, and worked out why in the days after:

Two minds inside one undifferentiated claim had nothing to broadcast across.

But the claim was no longer undifferentiated.

It had a second hard point that the world outside could already read as separate.

He did not know if a mind could be an anchor the way ground was.

Nothing he had learned from the pale ones, the emissary, or the Mother’s own careful patience had ever suggested it.

But nothing had ruled it out either, and the only way to find out cost him one evening and whatever it felt like to fail at something in front of the one person he most wanted to succeed in front of.

Stand still, he sent, uselessly, from habit, and then did the only thing available:

he took the recognition he had given Vek — public, formal, laid at the reporting junction in the colony’s own grammar — and gave the same shape of it to Khrr, in front of witnesses, in words that meant this is yours, held by you, answerable to you.

Not the border.

There was no ground to give it that wasn’t already spoken for.

He gave it authority over the mission itself.

This crossing is Khrr’s. Not delegated. Held.

Nothing happened that either of them could point to.

No bracketed text, no shift in the air, nothing like the low structural hum that had marked every other threshold he’d crossed.

It didn’t work, Sacha sent, and felt something drop that he had not fully admitted to himself he was carrying.

Maybe. Khrr’s marks were even. Or maybe it is not built the way you are testing it. You tried to shout across a canyon on the first night and there was no canyon yet. Perhaps there is one now, and it is very quiet, and you are listening for the wrong thing.

Sacha turned that over.

Go, he sent, finally. Take three. Fast, light, the two Cerci who ran the corridor watch. If something changes, try anyway. I’ll be listening for whatever the wrong thing turns out to be.

Khrr held a moment longer than it needed to, which had become, over three months, its own kind of sentence.

Then it went west, back through two thousand lengths of stone it had already crossed once, toward a cellar that might not exist anymore and a rat that might already be dead.
