The Roach God

Here was the math, worked out over a sleepless, watchful night: the spider was fast enough to end any single roach in half a second, no contest.

But it could only kill one at a time, and had to reset between strikes: recoil, reposition, re-anchor before committing again.

Forty against one looked, on paper, like an execution.

In practice, if even ten of those forty could be made to move together, converging from ten angles at the exact instant the spider committed to a kill, the math flipped entirely.

It was a terrible plan, and Sacha knew it. A more cautious version of himself, the one whose whole career had been built on managing risk down to acceptable margins, would have said wait, grow first, don’t spend what you can’t get back. But caution meant slow, and slow meant bleeding out one roach a day until nothing was left worth building with.

This is the part where I decide what kind of god I’m going to be, he thought, and it didn’t feel dramatic, thinking it in an insect’s silent inner voice under a dead water heater. It felt like a diagnosis he couldn’t argue his way out of. Careful forever, until we’re all dead anyway. Or bet everything, right now, and see what it buys us.

He chose the bet.

Teaching coordination to creatures with no shared language turned out to be the hardest thing he’d done since the second death, harder in its own way than the dying itself. He had no voice they could parse, no gestures they instinctively read the way a dog reads a raised hand. What he had was scent, and touch, and time, and not much of the last one.

He started with two. He picked the watcher first, because it already paid attention, and a lean, twitchy male he mentally nicknamed Runner, because it was quick and reckless and kept trying to bolt every time Sacha touched an antenna to its back. He laid a scent trail from the water heater’s shadow to a fixed point six inches away, then physically walked the watcher along it, over and over, until the roach’s own antennae started tracing the path without him nudging it. Then he laid a second trail, and a third, until he had four fixed points around an empty patch of floor he was using as a stand-in for the drainpipe mouth. By the end of the first hour he had two roaches that could, roughly, reliably, move to a marked spot on cue.

By the end of the day he had eight.

The ninth and tenth came from a different problem entirely: not stupidity, but fear so deep it overrode everything, a full-body freeze that no amount of scent-trail repetition touched. One of them, a female he never did manage to fully train, simply stopped moving every time she got within smelling distance of the spider’s territory, legs locking rigid. Sacha eventually gave up and rotated her out for a slower but steadier roach who could at least be counted on to arrive, even if arriving took her a beat longer than the rest. He filed that away without judgment. Fear didn’t hit every soldier the same, and a colony built entirely out of creatures who could switch it off wasn’t a colony he’d trust anyway.

He ran the full drill six times before dark. Four of the six ended in what would have been, in a real fight, a dead roach: a gap in the ring, a straggler half a second slow, a position collapsing before the others could compensate. He made himself watch every failure instead of only counting the successes, because a plan that worked four times out of six against an empty patch of floor was not a plan he had any business running against a live spider yet.

By the seventh run, it held clean.

He gave it one more night to settle in their small, fragile memories, and moved at first light, before he could talk himself into a safer, slower version of the same idea. Ten roaches, staggered in a wide ring around the drainpipe mouth. Himself as bait, standing in plain view at the center, close enough to the pipe’s shadow that the spider would have to fully commit to reach him.

The spider came for him almost immediately. He was slow, alone, and looked like the easiest meal on offer. He held still a half-second longer than instinct wanted, right on the edge of what his new body could survive, then broke sideways as eight legs slammed down where he’d been standing a heartbeat before, close enough that he felt the displaced air ripple across his back.

The ring closed around it, immediately, predictably, imperfectly. The slow roach who’d replaced the frozen female arrived a full beat late, leaving a gap on the northern edge that the spider’s instincts found before Sacha’s plan could close it. It spun toward the gap instead of the center, fast, and for one raw half-second Sacha knew that his terrible plan was about to become a very specific kind of dead. Not his own death, not yet, but the death of the whole idea, right here, on its first real test.

He did the only thing left to do. He threw himself directly into the gap.

It wasn’t part of the plan. By any careful reading of his own strategy, it was exactly the kind of move he’d have told anyone else not to make: abandoning a position of relative safety to plug a hole with his own body, the one body in the whole ring that this entire scheme actually depended on surviving. But a gap in the ring meant the spider escaped the trap entirely, and a trap that failed on its first real use would never get a second chance. The nest wouldn’t believe in it, and neither, honestly, would he. So he ran straight at eight legs and a set of fangs built to end things his size in half a second, and trusted that a spider mid-turn toward one target has a half-beat of hesitation before it can commit to a second one.

It wasn’t clean, and it wasn’t heroic. Two of his ten died in those first three seconds, crushed under a leg that came down like a falling branch, and Sacha felt each death land somewhere in his chest as something sharp and specific, not an abstraction, a weight he made himself keep rather than push away, because the day he stopped feeling those was the day he’d stop being trustworthy with anyone’s life but his own. His own gamble bought exactly what he needed and nothing more: half a second of confusion, long enough for the gap to close behind him as the other nine roaches converged from every remaining angle at once.

Eight roaches and one improvising god converging on a predator that had never once been attacked from every side at the same time is a very different equation than a spider hunting stragglers. It thrashed, crushed a third roach in its death throes, caught Sacha a glancing blow across two legs that would ache for days, and then, finally, it stopped moving altogether.

Sacha stood in the wreckage, antennae trembling, both from the fight and from how close his own improvisation had come to costing far more than it did, and felt the pressure behind his eyes shift.

[Sanctuary: reinforced.

Faith: accumulating.

Territory: contested ground claimed.]

No fireworks, just the quiet, structural feeling of something beneath him settling into place, the difference between a tent with three stakes driven in and one anchored properly at every corner. He grasped, a little better now, what unclaimed flesh had meant back in the crawlspace. This patch of ground was no longer unclaimed. He’d put something of himself into it, including, very nearly, all of it, and it had held.

Three roaches dead. Two more badly hurt. And the other thirty-seven, the seven survivors of the ring, plus the thirty who’d stayed back and watched from the shadows, had just seen something happen that shouldn’t, by any rule they understood, have been possible.
