The Heart System

Chapter 635

I poured a glass for her, walked back, and handed it over before sitting on the other side of the couch. She drank it in one go and set the empty glass on the coffee table. She looked exhausted. Sheesh, was she out shopping at this hour?

”You’re up early,” I noted. ”For a shopping trip.”

”Yeah,” Mendy said. ”Penelope’s shift ended early today. Some crazy ex trashed the place.”

”Oh, where does she work?”

”Nine’s,” she said. ”Know the place?”

I shook my head. ”Nope.”

”It’s downtown. There’s this giant roundabout with a massive advertisement sign over it. All neon-y and bright.”

”Oh, yeah, yeah. I know exactly where that is.”

”It’s very close to there,” Mendy said. ”Opened just a few months ago.”

”She a barista?”

”Yep.”

”We should visit her,” I said with a chuckle. ”Order the most ridiculous drink on the menu and ask for a refund... twice.”

”Oh, she’d either kill us or... find a way to kill us more,” she laughed.

We both shared a laugh, but then a quiet silence slowly crept into the room. God, I still couldn’t believe I’d had Mendy in bed along with the other girls. And thank fuck that creep Richard, the guy I actually thought was a decent friend, was finally out of our lives. Discovering he was a total predator was a shock. I used to drink with the dude... ugh.

”You’re... thinking about something deep,” she noticed.

I shook my head slightly. ”Uh, nah. Just... um, oh, Kayla is a barista, too. Did you know that?”

”Penelope and I have visited her tons of times, yeah,” she nodded.

”Hey, maybe I should become a barista, too,” I shrugged. ”Penelope, Kayla, and me. We could make you matchas all day, every day.”

”God, I used to drink mochas with extra whipped cream... but now I can’t.”

”The world ran out of whipped cream?”

She slumped her shoulders playfully. ”Because my gym app won’t let me.”

I exhaled. ”Wow. Really? That’s the reason?”

”Hey, I want to look fit and stay healthy,” she defended. ”Is that so bad?”

”Not drinking mochas with extra whipped cream? Yeah, that’s bad. Bad for your mental health.”

She shook her head with a smile, leaning back and crossing her legs. Well... she really needed to leave soon, though. Minne would probably be ready in a few minutes, and I definitely didn’t want Mendy catching us like that. Sure, she’d seen me with the other girls, but introducing this right now would be way too sudden. It might scare her off.

Mendy fumbled with the hem of her shirt, then darted a shy glance my way. Huh, I still remembered the time I went to her house and... well, went down on her, only for her to kick me out right afterward out of nowhere. That was easily the most awkward encounter of my life.

”Well...” Mendy said, patting her thighs as she stood up with a smile. ”Sorry for... uh, how do I put it... pissing and leaving.”

”That’s one way to phrase it,” I replied. ”But yeah, no problem. My door’s open for you anytime.”

”Thank you.” She cleared her throat, adjusting her posture. ”I, uh... wow. It’s a little awkward, not gonna lie.”

”What is?”

”I don’t know. Just being here,” she shrugged. ”I can’t help but remember that... night.”

”Oh.” I got up from the couch too. ”Well... I hope you liked it, at least. I just really hope I didn’t force it on you. That would make me feel like a complete jackass.”

She laughed awkwardly. ”It... it was definitely better than masturbating.”

I wiped imaginary sweat from my forehead. ”Phew. I knew lowering the expectations would pay off.”

She laughed again... and then I spotted Minne over her shoulder. She was standing at the edge of the hallway, peeking slightly into the living room. She was wearing the exact outfit Tessa had bought for her.

It was supposed to be a French maid costume, but it was so incredibly skimpy it barely qualified as lingerie, let alone a uniform. The top consisted of a white, ruffled lace choker around her neck connected to two thin, sheer strips of black silk that barely managed to cover her nipples. A miniature, entirely useless white lace apron hung from her waist, tied loosely with a satin ribbon.

The front had a tiny triangle of fabric, but the back was completely non-existent, leaving her pale, round ass entirely exposed to the cool air of the apartment. And right in the center of her bare cheeks, a thick, metallic butt plug was buried deep inside her tight opening. The large, red jewel embedded in the base of the plug sparkled brightly beneath the hallway lights, making her look like a perfectly submissive, lewd little toy prepared exclusively for my use.

Oh, fuck no. No way I’d do that. Mendy wasn’t here to do something like that. Just like she said, piss and leave.

Suddenly, the phone on the counter, Minne’s phone, began ringing, and Mendy’s eyes immediately shifted toward it. A second later, she noticed Minne peeking out from the hallway, only half of her body visible from behind the wall. The moment Minne realized she’d been seen, she squeaked quietly and disappeared back into the shadows.

”Oh my god,” Mendy whispered, her voice instantly dropping in embarrassment. ”I... I didn’t know. This is such a bad time. I’m sorry.”

”No, no,” I replied quickly, shaking my head. ”It’s not like that.”

”I should go.”

”Would you join us?”

The question slipped out before I could stop myself.

Fuck.

Why the hell did I say that? This system seriously had to be messing with my brain at this point. Every other quest it gave me sounded unhinged, and now I was casually blurting out things that made me sound completely insane. Why couldn’t it give me something normal for once? Something simple. Catch five butterflies. Feed a stray cat. Literally anything else.

Mendy blinked at me in surprise, clearly caught off guard by what I’d just said.

”I... I’d just be a nuisance,” she replied awkwardly while taking a small step toward the door. ”I should really go.”

”That night,” I said, moving in front of her before she could leave, ”when you came over... I don’t really know how to explain it properly, but it made me happy. Just having you there with us felt... right.”

Her eyes shifted slightly, uncertain.

”It sounds stupid when I say it out loud,” I admitted with a weak laugh, ”but I liked it. I liked being around you.”

”I... I just...”

”I know things are weird,” I continued softly. ”And I know you’ve had doubts about me from the beginning. Honestly, you probably still do. But if you’re okay with it... I’d like to see you more often.”
