The Greykeep Chronicles

My father was right. It was three days. The wind wasn’t against them.

* * *

On Monday morning I fell over five times. On Tuesday, four.

Avarn didn’t stop the lessons. I thought he might. Half the gods of the Accord were coming through the gates into Westmere by then, and the Hold was humming so loud you could feel it in your back teeth, and Tamar had the harbor chained across at the mouth for the first time in thirty years. And at a quarter to five on Monday, in the dark, there was Avarn on the low wall of the tilt yard with his staff across his knees, exactly as if nothing in the world were happening.

”A fleet is weather,” he said, when I asked him. ”You don’t stop practicing because of weather.” He looked at the wooden sword under my arm. ”That’s what practicing’s for.”

On Wednesday the lesson was at Westmere. At five, on the north pier, on the wet black stones at the very end, with the harbor lamp swinging over us and the sea making small sounds against the pilings in the dark. Roderic counted. Avarn said again. I fell over three times, and once nearly into the harbor, and Roderic caught me by the collar.

At a quarter to seven the light came up gray over the town behind us.

And at seven, out on the line where the sea meets the sky, Tamar’s bell began to ring.

* * *

Tamar’s watch room is at the top of the Hold, on the seaward side. One small square room with a stove and a stool and a shelf, and the long brass spyglass on its bracket by the window, and the watch book, open, with the pen beside it. Somebody has written in that book every hour since the first fleet came in the summer. Tamar, mostly. Her father Edric when she sleeps. Dunmore and his crew in the bad weeks. Sometimes me.

There were eleven of us in that room by ten past seven. It isn’t built for eleven. My father had to stand with his head bent under the beams.

Tamar was at the spyglass. Her bad hand, the one she hid for twenty years, was flat on the sill beside it. She didn’t look around.

”Line,” she said. ”West by south. Sails. A great many.” She was quiet for a moment, adjusting the glass. ”More than the summer. A great many more.”

”How many?” said my father.

”I can’t count them,” said Tamar. ”They keep coming over the edge.”

”I can,” said Caitlin.

* * *

She didn’t need the glass. She went to the window and stood beside Tamar with her hands at her sides and her lips moving, and her fingers, just the tips, folding and unfolding against her skirt.

We waited. Nobody breathed much.

The light came up. The sea came out of the dark, gray and then silver and then a hard pale blue, all the way out to the edge of the world. And on the edge of the world, all along it, from the north end of the horizon to the south, sails. Black sails. So many that the line of the sky looked like a strip of black lace somebody had laid along the bottom of it.

”Two hundred and forty,” said Caitlin.

Her voice was perfectly steady.

”Two hundred and forty long ships. Black hulls. Black sails. The same as the summer.” She paused. Her fingers went still. ”And eleven more. Behind them. Bigger. Three masts. And something on the deck of each of them that isn’t a sail.”

* * *

My father bent and put his eye to the spyglass. He was there a long time.

When he straightened up, his face hadn’t changed. But Carol, beside me, made a small sound. Not a word. Just a breath let out through her teeth.

She’d felt it before he said it. So had I. Through her. Through the middle.

”Towers,” said my father. ”On the decks. Glass. Tall as a mast. One on each ship.” He stepped back from the glass so Carol could look. ”And in each one, lightning. Going around and around inside. Like a bird in a jar.”

Carol didn’t take the glass. She didn’t need to. She stood at the window with her hands flat on the cold stone of the sill, the way Seraphina stood at the window of the north tower, and looked out at the sea.

”Eleven storms,” she said. ”From the golden city. The ones that light the streets.” Her voice was flat. ”He’s emptied the towers. He’s brought them all.” She swallowed. ”They’re not asleep. They’re awake. They’re going around and around. They want out so badly I can hardly stand to feel it.”

* * *

And then the sea went flat.

Not calm. Flat. All at once, from the line of the fleet all the way in to the harbor mouth below us, every wave and swell and ripple just stopped, as if someone had laid a hand on it. The water went smooth as a table and hard as glass and very, very still. The small sounds against the pilings stopped. The gulls over the harbor went quiet and settled on the water and sat there, looking puzzled, rocking on nothing.

”Draum,” said Brannoc, from the back of the room. Very low.

I’d seen it once before. In a dream. A sea held perfectly flat, like a floor, with something huge and patient lying underneath it with its hand on the table.

”He’s under the fleet,” said my father. ”Holding the sea still for them, so they can come in close without a wave. Like the summer.” He looked at the flat water. ”He’ll be holding it all the way to the shoals.”

”A hand that holds cannot also strike,” said Lexander quietly. He’d come through from Concordia at six with Thor and Io and Thora. ”That’s what we were told, in the autumn. If Draum is holding the sea flat for the fleet, he can’t stand it up against the coast.”

”Not yet,” said Thora.

* * *

Everybody turned and looked at her.

She was sitting on the floor in the corner, by the stove, with her knees up and her arms around them. Thora. Io’s youngest, the one with the knowing. Small and fierce and very blonde, with her mother’s eyes. She’s been home from the southern embassy since the autumn, and in all that time I’d only heard her say perhaps a hundred words. She doesn’t talk much. She doesn’t need to. When Thora says something, it’s usually because it’s already true and nobody else has noticed.

She wasn’t looking at the window. She was looking at the floor.

”I said it in the autumn,” said Thora. ”If we go, the sea stands up. A gray wall. Taller than the castle. All down the coast.” She hugged her knees. ”We didn’t go. We stayed here. And I thought that meant it wouldn’t.” Her voice was very small. ”It’s changed. It isn’t if we go anymore. I don’t know what it is now. It’s waiting for something.” She looked up, at last. At Carol. ”It’s waiting for somebody to answer a question.”

Nobody said anything.

Out on the line, the black sails were coming on, over the flat sea, very fast and very quiet, the way they had in the summer. No oars. No wind. Just sliding, on Draum’s hand.

* * *

They stopped at the outer shoals.

All of them. At once. Two hundred and forty long black ships and eleven tall ones with their glass towers full of lightning. They came in over the flat sea in a great curved line and stopped, every single one, exactly on the edge of the shoals, a mile out, as if somebody had drawn a line on the water with a ruler and told them not to cross it.

Every black sail dropped at the same moment. You could hear it from the Hold. A long soft rushing sound, like a single huge breath let out across a mile of sea.

And then nothing.

They just sat there. On the flat water. Waiting.

”He’s waiting to be asked in,” said my mother. She’d come up the stair behind us with Adriana. ”We have studied your customs. He said so. In the first letter. We will wait to be asked in.”

”He’ll wait a long time,” said Tamar.

She didn’t take her eye from the glass.

* * *

At eight o’clock a boat put off from the nearest of the long black ships.

A small boat. One man rowing. He came in across the flat sea very slowly, with his back to us, the way you row, and it took him nearly half an hour to cover the mile. And when he got to the harbor chain he shipped his oars and stood up in the boat, carefully, the way a man stands up in a boat who has done it many times and still doesn’t like it, and turned around and raised one hand, open, toward the Hold.

Severin Dask.

Tamar picked up the pen and wrote in the watch book, in her small square hand:

8th hour. S.D. in a boat at the chain. Hand raised.

Then she put the pen down.

”He’s asking leave to come ashore,” she said. ”He always does. He’s asked four times since the summer. I’ve said yes every time.” She turned around for the first time and looked at my father. ”It’s my harbor. But it’s your war. Do I say yes?”

My father looked at her for a long moment.

”It’s your harbor,” he said. ”And he asked.”

”Then I say yes,” said Tamar.

* * *

We met him at the end of the north pier.

Not all of us. My father said that would be a crowd, and a crowd is a kind of fist. So it was my father, barefoot on the black stones. And Tamar, because it was her pier. And Carol, because she said so, and nobody argued. And Iselle, because she said so too, with Roderic a step behind her. And me, because my father looked at me on the stair down from the watch room and said, ”You. With the sword under your arm. Stand where I can see you.”

So I stood where he could see me. At his left shoulder. With the little oak sword tucked under my arm, blade back, hilt forward, the way Avarn taught me when I was five.

Avarn was on the harbor wall above us, sitting on a bollard with his staff across his knees. Thor was beside him, very tall, with her hammer. Neither of them came down. They didn’t need to.

* * *

Dunmore’s men let down the chain. Severin rowed the last fifty yards and brought the boat alongside the steps at the end of the pier, and made it fast, and climbed up. Slowly. He’s not a young man.

He looked older than he had in the summer. Thinner. His good gray coat was salt-stained to the knees, and there was more gray in his hair than there had been. He stood on the top step with both hands raised, open, palms out, and he looked at my father, and then at Tamar, and then at Carol.

And then at Iselle.

And something went across his face that I couldn’t read at all. It was there and gone. Like a gull’s shadow across a deck.

”Lady,” he said to her. Very quietly. In Kethran. And then, in our tongue: ”I heard. About the gate. In the square at Concordia. Everybody in the fleet heard. Asked. Answered. In.” He bowed to her. Not the court bow. A small one, from the neck. ”The law’s older than him. He knows it. I’ll tell him again anyway.”

”Thank you, Severin,” said Iselle.

* * *

He took a letter out of his coat.

Black. Like the first one. Sealed with dark-gold wax, pressed with a closed hand. He held it in both hands for a moment, looking at it.

”I’ve carried two of these now,” he said. ”In twenty years of carrying his letters, I’ve only ever carried two that began the way this one does.” He looked up at my father. ”The first was in the summer. You remember.”

”This is the first time I have asked,” said my father.

”Yes,” said Severin. He broke the seal. He unfolded the black paper, and his hands were very steady, and his voice when he read was very even and very clear, and carried along the whole length of the pier.

”To the house of Grey, at Greykeep and at Westmere. From Malachar Ostrane, Emperor of Kethra, Lord of the Ostrane Imperium, Son of the Unnamed God, Who Holds.

”This is the second time I have asked.”

* * *

I won’t put down all of it. Mary has it, word for word, in a separate book she keeps locked in the library at Greykeep, and that’s where it belongs.

But I’ll put down what he asked for.

He asked for Carol. Again. The one in whom lightning sleeps. Not as a wife this time. As a guest. For a season. At my table, with her hands as open as she likes. She may say no to everything else in my house. Only come and sit, and let me ask her one thing to her face, the way your customs say I must.

And he asked for his sister. My sister, who was stolen from my house by the house of Grey, and who I am told now lives in a room with a window. I would like her home.

And he offered things for them. That was the strangest part. Not threats. Gifts. I will open the eleven towers of the golden city, and let the storms go home to the high plateaus. I will let the river at Ilvane run low again in summer, as it used to. I will unsay the oaths of any Hushed who wishes it. I will send home every ship’s crew I have ever kept.

All this I will do, for two people at my table.

I have asked once and once more. I do not ask a third time. If the answer is no, I will stop asking, and something else will answer instead. I would rather it were not so. I will wait at the shoals until the sun sets tomorrow.

Who Holds.

* * *

Severin lowered the letter.

The flat sea lay all around us, silent, smooth as glass. A mile out, two hundred and fifty-one ships sat on it, waiting.

”No,” said Carol.

She didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t need to. On that pier, on that sea, with Draum’s hand holding everything still, her voice carried like a bell.

”Second time,” said Carol. ”Same answer. Tell him I said so. Tell him I said it to his face, by proxy, and that I’d say it to his face in person, any time he likes, if he comes ashore barefoot and knocks.” She folded her arms. ”And tell him if he wants to open the storm towers, he should just open them. Not for me. For the storms. Because it’s right. You don’t trade the right thing. You just do it.”

Severin bowed his head.

”And I’m already home,” said Iselle. ”Tell him that too. Tell him I asked. In front of witnesses. With my hands open. And it was answered.” Her voice shook, just once, and steadied. ”Tell him I still say his name at night. So somebody does.”

Severin looked at her for a long time.

”I’ll tell him,” he said.

* * *

He folded the letter.

And then he stopped. And looked down at it. And very slowly, as if it were something hot, he unfolded it again, all the way out, and turned it over.

On the back of the black paper, down in the bottom corner, there was a second fold. A small one. Tucked in, like a pocket. Sealed with a smear of wax that wasn’t dark gold. It was gray. The gray of ash, or of old snow, or of nothing at all.

Severin’s face had gone white.

”That wasn’t there,” he said. Very quietly. Not to us. ”I watched him seal it. In the glass room. The night before we sailed. I watched him press the wax with his own hand.” He swallowed. ”That wasn’t there.”

He held it out. Not to my father. Not to Carol.

To me.

I don’t know why. I’ve asked him since, and he says he doesn’t know either. He says his hand just went that way, as if somebody else had moved it.

* * *

I took it.

My father’s hand came down on my shoulder. Heavy. Not stopping me. Just there.

I broke the gray wax with my thumb. It crumbled like ash. Inside the little fold was one line, written very small, in a hand I’d never seen. Not Malachar’s square imperial capitals. Not anybody’s. The letters were perfectly even and perfectly cold, like frost on a pane, and they didn’t quite stay still while I read them.

Give me the whole one, and I will let the half keep his mother.

* * *

I read it twice.

The whole one.

The half. Malachar. The half-god. Made whole.

His mother. Cerys. In her glass room, asking everyone who came in whether it was time yet.

He was threatening Malachar’s mother. To us. In a fold hidden in Malachar’s own letter, that Malachar didn’t know was there.

And he was asking for my son.

* * *

I didn’t read it out loud.

I folded the little pocket of paper closed again, very carefully, and held it in my fist. Then I opened my hand, because it was closed, and I don’t keep my hands closed, and held it flat on my open palm instead.

I looked up.

Iselle was looking at me. Straight at me, across the pier. She’d seen my face. She’d seen it go however it went. She’s not a fool.

”Don’t tell me,” said Iselle quietly.

”I won’t.”

”Is it about—” She stopped herself. Pressed her lips together. Shook her head. ”No. Don’t. I chose.” She held her hands together in front of her, open. ”I chose not to know. I’m still choosing it.”

”I know,” I said. ”Thank you.”

* * *

I turned to my father. I held the little fold of paper up on my open hand, and he looked down at it, and read it, and his face didn’t change at all.

But the stones under his bare feet went white with frost. All at once. A great ring of it, spreading out from him across the end of the north pier, over the wet black stone, over the bollards, up the harbor wall, until it touched Avarn’s boots and Thor’s, and they both stood up.

The flat sea, a hand’s breadth below the pier, hissed where the frost touched it. And didn’t freeze. Draum was holding it. Even my father’s winter couldn’t get in.

”Severin,” said my father.

His voice was very calm. That was the frightening thing.

”Yes.”

”Did you know?”

”No.” Severin met his eyes. ”I swear it. On anything you like. I carried his letter. I didn’t carry that.”

”I believe you,” said my father. He looked out across the flat sea at the eleven glass towers, a mile out, with their lightning going around and around inside them. ”Then tell your Emperor this, from me. Word for word.”

* * *

”Nobody in this house will ever take anything from you,” said my father. ”Not your storms. Not your ships. Not your crown. Not your mother.” He paused. ”But somebody’s put a hand inside your letter. Somebody who doesn’t knock. And he’s asking for things in your name that you don’t know you’re asking for. And he’s threatening the one person you sit on the floor for every night.”

Severin had gone very still.

”If you want to know who,” said my father, ”come ashore. Barefoot. Alone. And knock. I’ll open the door myself. And I’ll show you his handwriting. And then you can decide whose letter it really was.”

”And if he won’t?” said Severin.

”Then tomorrow at sunset,” said my father, ”he’ll find out that something else answers when he stops asking. And he’ll find out it isn’t on his side.”

* * *

Severin went down the steps to his boat.

He untied it. He got in, slowly, the way he does. He picked up the oars.

And then he looked up at me. Only me. With the little oak sword under my arm and the gray-sealed fold of paper on my open hand.

”Prince,” he said. Very low, so the others wouldn’t hear. ”He won’t ask a third time. That’s true. He’s never broken that rule, not once, in three hundred years.” He hesitated. ”But I don’t think he’s the one who’ll answer, if you say no. Not anymore. Not after this.” He looked at the fold on my palm. ”Get the little ones off the coast. Tonight. Inland, as far as they’ll go. Please.”

Then he pushed off. And rowed away across the flat sea, very slowly, with his back to the shoals and his face to us, the way you row.

* * *

At sunset, the fleet sang.

The way it did in the summer. Two hundred and fifty-one ships, all at once, one long low note across a mile of flat sea, with no words in it. Carol put her hands over her ears. The seeds under my breastbone flinched, the way they always do.

And on the decks of the eleven tall ships, the glass towers began to glow. Brighter and brighter, as the light went out of the sky, until they stood up out of the dark sea like eleven white candles.

Thora had come down from the watch room. She stood beside me on the harbor wall in the last of the light, very small, with her arms wrapped around herself.

”It’s not waiting anymore,” she said.

”For what?”

”For somebody to answer.” She looked out at the eleven white candles on the dark water. ”Somebody did. On the pier. Your sister did.” She shivered. ”So now it’s going to stand up.”

* * *

Mary’s book. She’d come through to Westmere at noon with the black book in a satchel and her pen behind her ear, because she said if the world was going to end she wasn’t going to hear about it secondhand. She wrote that night in Tamar’s kitchen, by the stove.

Wednesday. Westmere. 7th hour: sails on the line. Caitlin counted 240 long ships and 11 tall ones with glass towers. Eleven storms, held.

The sea went flat. Draum.

8th hour: Severin in a boat at the chain. Tamar said yes. On the pier he read the second asking. Carol said no. Iselle said she was already home.

There was a fold in the letter that Malachar didn’t put there. Garrick read it. He didn’t read it out. Iselle asked him not to. Uriah frosted the pier.

Severin says: get the little ones off the coast.

Sunset: the fleet sang. The towers are lit.

And under that, in a careful, upright, salt-stained hand that Mary had never seen in her book before, because he’d come back across the flat sea in the dark, alone, at nine o’clock, and asked Tamar’s leave to come ashore one more time, and asked Mary’s leave to write one line:

Severin Dask. I carried the letter. I did not carry the fold. I would like that noted, in a book that isn’t his.
