The Greykeep Chronicles

Every evening at dusk, Ansel lights a lamp.

Not in Greykeep. Not in the chapel. Three hundred miles north, on the old road, at a place called Hesketh’s shelter: a stone hut and a long stone trough for the carters’ horses, with three lamps on iron hooks above the trough. One for the old carter, Hesketh, who kept the shelter in the war. One for a woman called Hollis, who once kept a house with a lamp in the window at the very start of the last road. And one for Ansel himself.

Hollis hung it for him. The year he came back. So that there’d be a light at the start of the road for him too, she said, the way there’d once been one for everyone else.

He walks there every evening. Nobody has ever seen him go. He just isn’t in his chair by the Council door at sunset, and then he is again, an hour after dark, with the smell of road dust on his brown coat. He knocks three times, every time, on the door of Hesketh’s hut, though nobody has lived in it for twenty years, and waits, and then lights the three lamps, one after another, and sits on the low wall beside the trough until they’re all burning steadily.

Faelan told me that. He’d asked Ansel his three questions years ago, for the green ledger. What’s your name. What do you do. What’s your favorite thing.

Ansel’s favorite thing, Faelan said, was the moment the third lamp caught.

* * *

On the first night of my father’s three days, I felt it go out.

* * *

I was on the east wall. Of course I was. It’s where I go when I can’t sleep, and I hadn’t slept properly since the chapel. Seraphina was beside me. She’d come up at eleven with two cups of Helena’s tea and a blanket and sat down in the nook without a word, and I’d known without asking that she’d be there every night now until I stopped coming.

I’d been doing what I do these nights. Feeling. Not reaching; Aurelia had forbidden reaching. Just letting my edges sit where they sit, out past the river and the hills, and noticing what was in them. Pim’s lamp at Westmere. The bell at Ternhollow, quiet now, waiting for fog. Selvane’s harbors, one by one, all down the coast. Meriel’s candles in the chapel below me, two hundred of them, tall and steady.

And far to the north, three hundred miles up the old road, three small lamps over a stone trough.

I knew them. I’ve known that road since I was a boy. And I knew the third one, the one that was Ansel’s, because it doesn’t feel like an ordinary lamp. It feels like the gold light at his side. Small and steady. A lamp in a window seen from a long way down the road.

At a quarter past midnight, it went out.

* * *

Not the way a lamp goes out when the oil’s gone. Not a gutter, or a fade.

It went out the way Meriel’s candles had gone out in the chapel. All at once. Snuffed. As if a hand had come down over it.

And then, after a moment, it came back. But not the same. Colder. Paler. Not gold anymore. Gray-blue, like a lamp seen through fog.

I was on my feet.

* * *

”Garrick,” said Seraphina.

”Ansel’s lamp.”

”I know. I felt you feel it.” She was standing too, with the blanket falling off her shoulders. ”Ask.”

I looked at her.

”May I?” I said. ”Fold to him. Not to the shelter; I’ve never stood there since I was small. To him. The way I folded to my father.” I swallowed. ”You can say no.”

”You can,” said Seraphina. ”If I come.”

”Sera—”

”Next to you,” she said. ”Not in a doorway. You promised.” She took my hand. ”And we don’t go in. We go near. We watch. We don’t touch anything unless he asks us to. It’s his lamp. It’s his road.” She looked at me steadily. ”Whatever’s happening to him, it’s his to say yes or no to. Not yours.”

I didn’t like it. I want to be honest. Every part of me wanted to fold straight into the middle of whatever was happening and put myself between it and him.

But she was right. It was his road.

”Near,” I said. ”Watching.”

”Near,” said Seraphina. ”Watching.”

And I reached for Ansel, the plain quiet shape of him, the little gold light at his side gone gray, three hundred miles north. And folded.

* * *

We came out in a stand of birches on a low rise above the road, perhaps a hundred yards from the shelter. I’d aimed for that. Not for him. For near him. It was the first time I’d ever folded to a person and stopped short on purpose.

It was very dark. No moon. Cold, the first real autumn cold, with our breath smoking. Seraphina put her hand over her mouth to hide hers and I did the same.

Below us, on the road, was Hesketh’s shelter. The low stone hut. The long trough, with the water in it black and still. The three iron hooks.

Two lamps were burning. Hesketh’s, warm and yellow. Hollis’s, warm and white.

The third was burning gray-blue. And Ansel was sitting on the low wall beside the trough, in his brown coat, with his hands folded, looking at it.

He wasn’t alone.

* * *

There was someone standing in the trough.

I don’t know how else to put it. The trough is two feet deep and full of rainwater. And someone was standing in the middle of it, up to the knees, as if the water were a doorway and they’d come up through it from somewhere much deeper. Tall. Thin. Gray. In a long coat that wasn’t theirs. With no face.

The Hollow Choir.

But not like Ruan. Not like the one at Skellow. This one wasn’t hunched, or hungry, or lost. It was standing very straight, with its long gray hands folded in front of it, almost exactly the way Ansel’s were. Waiting. Polite.

And it wasn’t singing.

It was calling.

* * *

I heard it before I understood it. A sound. Long and low and curled. A horn, blown over water, in fog. The kind of sound that goes out across a river and finds whoever’s lost on it and tells them where the gate is.

Corvel’s call.

Coming out of a hollow god’s empty face. Calling across the trough to the man on the wall. And what it was calling was a name.

”Othellos.”

* * *

Seraphina’s hand closed on my arm so hard it hurt.

Ansel didn’t move. He sat on the wall with his hands folded, looking at the gray-blue lamp. The call went out over him, and around him, and through him, the way a horn’s call goes through fog, finding him.

”Othellos,” it called again. Gently. Patiently. Over the black water of the trough. ”We’ve found you. You were lost. We’ve come to bring you home.”

”That isn’t my name,” said Ansel.

He said it quite mildly. Without looking up from the lamp.

”It was,” called the hollow thing. ”For a thousand years. It was the name that built the walls. The name that sat at the head of everything. The name every door in the old world opened for.” A pause. The call softened. ”You remember. Your hands remember.”

* * *

I saw Ansel’s hands move. Just a little. On his knee.

They didn’t close. But they moved. The way your hands move when someone says the name of a thing you used to hold.

* * *

”What do you want?” said Ansel.

”To give you something back.”

The hollow thing lifted its long gray hands out of the water. And in them, cupped, dripping, there was something.

I couldn’t see it clearly from the birches. It was dark, and the lamplight was strange. But I felt it. All the way up the slope, like a hand laid flat on my chest.

Doors.

Hundreds of them. Thousands. Folded small, the way a fold folds small inside a coat. Every door he’d ever built in the old world, in the long gray halls and the cells and the walls. Every threshold. Every one-way plate. Every door Vaust had made for him and he’d put people behind. All of it, held in two gray dripping hands, humming faintly, like a hive.

Ansel’s doors, Varrick had said, a long time ago, when I was too young to understand. Every one. Every wall he touched. They’re mine now.

And when Varrick fell, they’d fallen with him. Into the sea, Aurelia had always said. Gone.

They weren’t gone.

* * *

”Your doors,” called the hollow thing. ”Every one. We found them on the seabed, where they sank. We’ve kept them for you. All this time. Waiting for you to remember who you were.”

Ansel looked at them.

He looked at them for a long, long time.

”I don’t want them,” he said at last.

”You do,” said the hollow thing. Not unkindly. ”Your hands do. We can hear them wanting.”

Ansel didn’t answer that.

* * *

”And we’re not asking you to build cages,” called the hollow thing. ”Not anymore. We know you’ve changed. Everyone knows. The god who knocks.” A pause. ”We’re only asking for one door.”

”Where?”

”On a rock in the western sea. A young rock. Still warm. There’s someone there who needs a way across. To the golden city. To the one who’s waiting for her.” The call dropped lower, softer, almost tender. ”She can’t cross water on her own. She’s not finished. She’s very new. Build her a door, Othellos. One door. From the rock to the palace. And every other door is yours again.”

* * *

I went cold all over.

Beside me, Seraphina had gone absolutely still. I felt the First Flame stir in her, deep, the way it stirs when something comes near our son.

She.

They’d called it she.

* * *

”And if I say no?” said Ansel.

”Then the doors go back to the seabed,” called the hollow thing. ”And she finds another way across. Slower. With more pieces.” A pause. ”Two hundred and nine more pieces, from two hundred and nine more gods. Torn along the seams the children stitched.” The call went very gentle. ”Or one door. From you. And not a single seam more.”

Ansel’s hands, on his knee, had gone very still.

* * *

”And there’s something else,” called the hollow thing. ”Something you’ll want more than the doors.”

It leaned forward, a little, over the black water.

”Every door,” it called, very softly, ”opens both ways. You know that better than anyone. You built them. A door from the rock to the palace is a door from the palace to the rock.” A pause. ”And the palace stands on a hill. And under the hill, there’s a garden. With a high wall, and no gate.”

Ansel looked up.

For the first time, he looked up from the lamp, straight at the faceless thing standing in the trough.

”Three hundred and eleven,” called the hollow thing. ”In rows. Gray roses. The goddess of the first warm day of spring, in the third row.” Its voice was almost kind. ”You were Othellos. Every door in the old world opened for you. Take your doors back, and build us our one. And then build yourself another. Into a garden with no gate.” A pause. ”Who else in the whole Accord could open that wall from the inside?”

* * *

I stopped breathing.

Because I saw it land. I saw it go into him. Not as a lie. As the truth. The terrible thing about it was that it was true. Ansel had been Othellos. Every door in the old world had opened for him. If he had his doors back, there was no wall anywhere he couldn’t put a door in.

Including the Stillyard’s.

Three hundred and eleven gray roses. And the one god in the world who could walk up to that wall and make a door in it and walk them all out, in an afternoon, without a single fight.

All it would cost was one door. For her.

* * *

Ansel’s hands, on his knee, closed.

Slowly. Finger by finger. The way Iselle’s used to close when she was frightened. Into a fist.

The gold light at his side, the little steady lamp-in-a-window light that had been there since the day he came back on the hall floor holding nothing but his name, went pale. And then gray-blue. Like the lamp on the hook.

I took a step forward out of the birches.

Seraphina’s hand on my arm didn’t let go.

”His road,” she said, under her breath. ”Garrick. His.”

* * *

Ansel sat on the wall with his fist closed on his knee for a very long time.

The hollow thing in the trough waited. Patient. Polite. With his doors humming in its dripping hands.

Then Ansel said, very quietly:

”Who asks?”

The hollow thing didn’t answer.

”You’re a messenger,” said Ansel. ”You’ve got no face and no name. You’re calling me with a voice you tore off a lock-keeper’s horn. Somebody sent you.” He looked at it steadily. ”I knock on every door. I ask before I go in. I’m asking now. Who’s offering me this?”

The call, when it came, was very soft.

”Someone who remembers you,” it said. ”From before. From the night you stood outside a window and didn’t know how to knock.” A pause. ”Someone who showed you the lamp.”

* * *

The gray-blue lamp on the hook flickered.

Ansel’s face didn’t change. Nothing in it moved at all. But I felt it, all the way up the slope. Something in him went down very deep and very cold, the way a stone goes down in a well.

The voice in the dark. It’s yours. All of it. If you reach far enough.

The closed hand, knuckles white, reaching past him toward the lamp, as if to show him how.

* * *

”I’ll think about it,” said Ansel.

His voice was quite steady.

”Three nights,” called the hollow thing. ”We’ll come back to this trough in three nights. Bring your answer.” It lowered its hands, with his doors in them, back into the black water. ”Or don’t. And we’ll find another way. Slower.” A pause. ”Sleep well, Othellos.”

”That isn’t my name,” said Ansel.

But the hollow thing had already gone. Down into the trough, the way it had come, as if the water were a door. Without a ripple. And the trough was just a trough again, two feet deep, black and still.

And on the third hook, the lamp came back gold.

Slowly. Like a man remembering to breathe.

* * *

Ansel didn’t move.

He sat on the low wall beside the trough, under the three lamps, with his fist still closed on his knee. For a long time. Long enough that I began to be very cold, and Seraphina’s teeth began to chatter, and neither of us moved.

Then he opened his hand.

He looked at it. Front and back. For a long time.

Then he got up, and turned around, and looked straight up the slope. At the birches. At us.

He’d known we were there. Of course he had.

He didn’t say anything. He didn’t wave. He just looked at us, across a hundred yards of dark road, with his open hand at his side and the gold light faint beside it.

And then he turned, and knocked three times on the door of the empty hut, and waited, and went in.

* * *

We folded home at two. Seraphina held my hand the whole way and didn’t say anything until we were back on the east wall, with the cold tea still in its cups where we’d left it.

”You didn’t go down,” she said.

”No.”

”You wanted to.”

”Yes.”

She was quiet for a while.

”He looked at us,” she said. ”At the end. Before he went in.”

”I know.”

”Garrick, that was a man who wanted somebody to stop him.” She pulled the blanket around both of us. ”And who didn’t want to be stopped. Both at once.” She looked at me. ”That’s not ours to fix. Not tonight. He’ll have to come and ask.”

”And if he doesn’t?”

Seraphina didn’t answer.

* * *

Mary didn’t write it that night. Nobody told her. Seraphina said it was Ansel’s to tell, if he wanted to, and not ours.

So I wrote it myself, in the back of my own notebook, the one Eleanor keeps the key to the drawer for. I’ll put it here, because it belongs here now.

Ansel’s lamp went out at a quarter past midnight. It came back gray.

Seraphina came. Next to me. We watched from the birches. We didn’t go down. His road.

One of the Choir stood in Hesketh’s trough. It called him Othellos, in Corvel’s stolen voice.

It had his doors. All of them. From the seabed. It said: build one door, from Blackstack to the golden city, for her. And all your doors are yours again.

It called it she.

It said: every door opens both ways. Under the palace is a garden with no gate. Who else could open that wall from the inside?

His hand closed. His light went gray.

He asked: who asks? It said: someone who showed you the lamp.

He said: I’ll think about it.

Three nights.

His light came back gold. He looked up the slope at us. Then he knocked on an empty door and went in.

Seraphina: that was a man who wanted somebody to stop him, and didn’t want to be stopped. Both at once.

And under that, the next morning, when I found the notebook open on the chest of drawers where I’d left it, in a hand that wasn’t mine. Plain, careful, very upright. Somebody had come into our room while we slept, and knocked first, three times, so softly that neither of us woke.

I saw you. Thank you for staying on the hill. I don’t know yet. Ask me tomorrow night, at the stream. — A.
