The Dragon Kings' Forbidden Witch

Morgana stood poised at the threshold between two worlds.

Behind her was the corridor, the familiar structure of the palace, the realm of servants and guards and the everyday functioning of a kingdom. Before her was something entirely different. The interior of the kings’ private chambers was visible through the opening door, and it was warm in a way that suggested it was lived in, used, filled with the presence of powerful men who did not concern themselves with the formalities of empty spectacle.

The door opened wider.

And Morgana stepped through.

***

The chamber was not what she expected.

It was beautiful, certainly, but it was beautiful in a way that suggested function over form. The furniture was fine, crafted from dark wood with subtle carvings, but it was clearly used, clearly sat in, clearly part of the daily life of its inhabitants rather than purely decorative. A large fireplace dominated one wall, and within it, flames danced with the kind of vitality that suggested recent tending.

But what struck Morgana most was the light.

Windows ran along the eastern wall, positioned to catch the morning sun. Light flooded the chamber, turning it into something that was almost ethereal. The light fell across a dining table set for four, illuminating the food that had been carefully arranged.

The meal was elegant but not ostentatious.

Fresh bread, still steaming slightly, had been placed in a silver basket. Cheese, several varieties, was arranged on a wooden board. Fresh fruit....apples, pears, grapes, filled a crystal bowl. There were eggs prepared some way she did not immediately recognize, and meat that had been carefully sliced. Coffee steamed in a silver pot, its aroma filling the chamber.

But more than the food, more than the chamber itself, Morgana’s attention was drawn to the men rising from their seats as she entered.

Draeven rose first.

The First King moved with the grace of someone accustomed to command, his movements economical and powerful. His golden eyes, still showing the faint shimmer of his dragon beneath, fixed on Morgana with an intensity that was palpable. He was dressed simply, in trousers and a shirt that was open at the neck, but there was nothing simple about the power that radiated from him.

”Good morning, Morgana,” he said, his voice carrying a warmth that had not been present during the trial. ”I’m glad you could join us.”

The words were simple, but the way he said them suggested that her presence mattered. That her arrival was genuinely significant to him.

Kaelen rose next.

The youngest king moved with a predatory grace, his pale eyes blazing with a fire that seemed barely restrained. His smile, when he gave it, showed his teeth in a way that was predatory but not threatening, more the expression of a hunter who had spotted something beautiful and was delighted by the discovery.

”Morgana,” he said, his voice carrying a tone that was different from Draeven’s. Where the First King’s warmth was steady and certain, Kaelen’s tone carried an edge of something darker, something hungry, something that was barely concealed beneath layers of charm. ”You look absolutely stunning.”

The compliment was genuine, but it was also a challenge, a claiming, an assertion of his interest.

Thorne rose last.

The Shadow King moved with a stillness that was somehow more powerful than the motion of his brothers. His dark eyes....so dark they seemed almost black, fixed on Morgana with an intensity that was different from both Draeven’s and Kaelen’s. Where Draeven showed warmth and Kaelen showed hunger, Thorne showed understanding. He looked at her as if he could see through her, could understand her, could perceive truths about her that she had not yet acknowledged to herself.

”Welcome,” Thorne said, and his single word carried the weight of a benediction.

The three of them created a triangle around her as she moved deeper into the chamber....not threatening, not trapping, but present. The air seemed to vibrate with their power. The scent of them....each distinct, each powerful, filled her senses. Draeven carried the scent of smoke and earth. Kaelen carried the scent of winter and ice. Thorne carried the scent of shadow and something older, something that predated modern kingdoms.

They surrounded her with their presence, and Morgana understood, for the first time, what it might mean to be near beings that were not entirely human. There was something ancient in the chamber, something that had existed long before kingdoms and courts and the careful structure of human civilization.

But there was also care in their attention.

They were not predators approaching prey.

They were beings of immense power who had chosen to be gentle.

Draeven gestured toward the table.

”Please, sit,” he said, and his voice made it clear that this was not a command but an invitation.

Morgana moved toward the chair that he indicated, positioned between Draeven on her left and Kaelen on her right, with Thorne directly across from her. It was a deliberate arrangement, she realized. Surrounding her. Being close enough to observe, to speak with, to interact with directly.

She settled into the chair with the grace that Agnes’s careful instruction had instilled in her.

The three kings resumed their seats, and breakfast began.

Draeven served her first, offering bread and cheese with a courtesy that seemed almost anachronistic. He asked how she had slept, whether her chambers were comfortable, whether she was adjusting to her new circumstances. His questions were genuine, his interest authentic. He listened to her answers with the kind of focus that suggested each word mattered.

”Yes, Your Majesty, the chambers are beautiful,” Morgana replied, managing to form complete sentences despite her nervousness. ”I slept well.”

”Draeven,” the First King corrected gently. ”Just Draeven. We don’t need formality here.”

His correction was soft but clear. Titles had their place, but not between them. Not in this chamber. Not anymore.

Kaelen leaned closer, his pale eyes gleaming with amusement.

”Yes, love, just our names,” he said, his voice carrying a teasing quality. ”Kaelen, Draeven, and Thorne. We’re not so frightening when you know us, I promise.”

But his smile suggested that he was, in fact, at least a little bit frightening. And that he enjoyed the idea of being so.
