The Dragon Kings' Forbidden Witch

And Thorne’s transformation was the most subtle of the three.

His dark eyes deepened. Not shifting color so much as becoming darker. Becoming darker than night. Becoming the absolute black of shadow made manifest. His eyes burned with that darkness, showing the presence of NOCTYS just beneath the surface.

His form remained largely human, but there was something different about him now.

All three kings now stood partially transformed.

Their dragons rising in response to the proximity of the ancient ones.

The air around them seemed to crackle with power.

The very stone beneath their feet responding to their presence, resonating with the vibration of dragon magic, of ancient power, of forces that existed outside normal human understanding.

And with that partial transformation complete, they moved toward the massive doors of the Dragon Sanctum.

***

The doors were so massive that it required the combined strength of all three kings to push them further open.

And then, slowly, the doors swung open.

And the sight before them made Draeven clench his wrist.

The Dragon Sanctum was vast.

It was not a chamber carved from the palace, it was a cavern, ancient and fundamental to the structure of the palace itself. The cavern seemed to exist in defiance of architectural logic, its ceiling impossibly high, disappearing into shadow so absolute that the kings could not determine where it ended and the darkness began.

The walls were scarred and charred.

In places where dragonfire had licked against stone for what must have been hours, the very rock had been burned. Melted in some places. Cracked and splintered in others. Entire sections of wall had fallen away, revealing the hollow structure beneath.

Chunks of stone lay scattered across the floor of the cavern like a destroyed kingdom.

Some still smoldering. Others still smoking. Ash covered everything....a grey film that suggested destruction so complete that even the rock itself had been reduced to dust.

The air was thick with it.

Particles of ash hanging suspended, catching the light of the dying flames, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere. It was difficult to breathe. The smoke and ash coating the lungs, making each breath feel like inhaling fire itself.

The smell was overwhelming.

Sulfur and burned stone and something else, something ancient and primal that spoke of dragons and their magic made manifest.

And dominating that vast space....

THE THREE ANCIENT DRAGONS

They were magnificent.

They were terrible.

They were beyond anything the kings, in all their centuries, had ever imagined.

PYROS .....the Crimson Dragon, was closest to the entrance.

His scales were the color of blood mixed with deep scarlet. But that color was slowly darkening, shifting toward black as if the fire inside him was burning so hot that it was turning his very scales to char. His eyes were golden, so intensely golden they seemed to hold their own light.

He was pacing.

Moving back and forth across the cavern floor with the restless energy of a predator confined to a space too small for his true nature. Each step sent vibrations through the stone that the kings could feel in their bones. Each movement was controlled but barely, as if only a fraction of his true power was being expressed, as if holding back was causing him agony.

Scars covered his body.

Massive, deep scars that spoke of battles ancient and terrible. Of wounds that should have been fatal. Of a life lived in conflict and danger and constant, unending challenge.

AERIS....the Silver Dragon, was standing to the right.

Her scales caught the firelight and threw it back in glints of silver and white. But her beauty was marred by her damage, her right wing was torn, great sections of it missing as if something had rended it apart with terrible force. The wing folded against her side, no longer functional, no longer capable of the graceful flight that had once been her nature.

Yet she stood with absolute grace despite the damage.

Her eyes were sharp, intelligent and calculating and seeing everything in the cavern with the precision of a strategist assessing a battlefield.

She was not pacing like PYROS. She was standing still, watching, understanding. Her smaller size compared to the other dragons suggested she relied on intellect more than raw power.

AURYN....the Gold Dragon, was coiled on the far side of the sanctum.

He was massive beyond comprehension.

His scales were the color of molten gold, catching the light and reflecting it like a mirror. They seemed to glow from within, as if the dragon himself contained a sun in his body. His size was staggering, his coiled form was larger than a building. His head, when he moved it slightly, could have crushed the kings without effort.

He was still.

Not pacing like PYROS, not standing alert like AERIS. Simply still, watching, observing, understanding something that the other two dragons perhaps did not yet grasp.

The keeper of knowledge.

The one who had seen ages pass and understood the deeper currents of fate and destiny that flowed beneath the surface of the world.

The three dragons turned their heads as the kings entered.

PYROS was the first to react.

The Crimson Dragon raised his massive head suddenly, as if struck by something the kings had not felt. His golden eyes blazed even brighter. His scales seemed to deepen in color, shifting more fully toward black.

And his mouth opened.

The breath he drew was an entire cavern’s worth of air being pulled into his body.

The kings understood, in that moment, what was about to happen.

They had seconds to react....maybe less.

PYROS breathed out flame.

The column of flame shot upward from the dragon’s mouth.

It was enormous. It filled the cavern from floor to ceiling. It reached toward the upper darkness with fingers of pure fire, climbing and climbing until it disappeared into the shadow of the cavern’s height.

The heat was staggering.

It washed down like a wave. It pressed against the kings like a physical force. It filled the air with the smell of burning, with the sound of roaring, with the absolute certainty that anything caught in that fire would be reduced to nothing in moments.

The kings raised their hands instinctively.
