The Anomaly's Path

The eastern wing of Aegis Academy was a world away from the grand, sunlit plazas of the main campus.

Here, the hallways were narrower, the air noticeably colder, and the noise of chatting students faded into silence. The walls were lined with dim, mana-lit lamps that cast long, flickering shadows against the dark stone.

I reached Classroom 3B early.

It was a habit born from months of sitting in Professor Zane’s lectures. When you were in a class where one wrong line could make a slate explode in your face, getting to your desk five minutes before everyone else was basic self-preservation.

The seats were completely empty.

I walked to the back row, pulled out my chair, and laid my things across the desk: my stylus, two blank stone slates, and a small cloth for wiping away residue. I leaned back in my chair, staring at the huge black slate board at the front of the room.

It was already covered in dense, connected rune patterns, notes left behind from Zane’s research.

Most students saw Arrays and Runes as boring, brutal work. It wasn’t flashy. You didn’t get to swing a sword, throw fireballs, or show off in front of a crowd. It was hours of sitting in silence, forcing your mind to hold exact shapes while pushing tiny amounts of mana into stone.

If your hand shook by even a hair, the rune rejected you. If your focus slipped for one second, the slate cracked. It was annoying and boring. And yet, over the past three months, I’d come to respect it a lot.

My raw mana control had always been built for fighting, fast, aggressive, and heavy. I used it to hit hard and hit first. In the beginning, my lines were so thick and my focus so sharp that I shattered four slates in my very first week.

Zane hadn’t even yelled at me. He just looked at the smoking pile of stone dust, told me my mana was a sledgehammer trying to carve porcelain, and handed me another slate.

Instead of letting me force my way through with pure will, he stood over my desk and made me hold a single thin thread of mana at the tip of my writing tool for forty minutes straight. No cracking the stone. No flickering glow. Every time my focus slipped and the slate started to smoke, I had to start over from zero.

It had taken months of trial and error to bring my output down to a fine, precise line.

Before taking this class, I’d thought of runes as simple shortcuts, little spell-enchants you stuck onto a sword hilt or a chest lock. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The deeper I got into Zane’s lectures, the more I realized how terrifyingly useful runic arrays actually were.

Runes were the basic language of magic. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ

A spell needed continuous focus, precise core channeling, and vocal or physical triggers right in the middle of a chaotic fight.

But a rune? A rune held the formula steady in advance. You were basically writing rules into reality ahead of time so you didn’t have to waste a single second casting when a blade was flying at your neck.

In theory, the possibilities were endless. You could set delay runes in a scabbard to store pre-charged spells. You could write runes that made an attack hit a wider area. You could layer steadying runes into armor so strong elements didn’t tear the user’s body apart.

You could build traps that triggered when someone got close. You could set up barrier loops that pushed back movement. Or you could make tracking marks that pointed straight to a target miles away.

It was an absurdly versatile system, but the price for that power was an agonizing test of mental endurance. The reason so few people ever reached the peak of runic mastery wasn’t just a lack of mana. It was the crushing mental toll.

It required exact memory, strong willpower, and good mana control. A line drawn a hair too thick would reject your core frequency. An array drawn with wavering focus would backfire and blow your arm off.

Professor Zane had told us outright that skilled users spent decades slaving over basic arrays without ever reaching true mastery.

Even people with massive cores and sharp combat instincts broke under the endless frustration of failing thousands of times on a single slate. Strong willpower and high rank meant nothing if your hand shook at the final stroke.

Yet... despite how brutal the process was, it had quietly changed the way I fought.

Forcing myself to work on tiny threads of mana day after day had refined my mana control to an absurd degree.

Managing three different affinities, Lightning, Space, and Soul Flame, had always been an exhausting task that burned through my reserves fast. But through these rough runic drills, I’d learned how to use my affinities for a small part of their usual mana cost.

I could now stabilize my Lightning during high-speed dashes without tearing my own muscles.

I could use Space to fold my attacks tighter without leaking mana. And I could control Soul Flame with precision instead of letting out wild, exhausting bursts. My sword style was faster, cleaner, and far more deadly because I wasn’t wasting a single drop of mana.

Still, as much as I’d improved, I knew my limits here.

I wasn’t a born runesmith. I couldn’t look at a blank stone and feel how it wanted to be written on. If I tried hard, I could draw a solid delay rune or a barrier array. But I was doing it through pure memory and practice.

Caster, on the other hand?

Caster was a different species entirely. I had to admit there was a quiet bit of envy in me when I watched him work. I had three powerful affinities, a monster core, and a warrior’s instinct. But in this room, none of that made me special.

Caster could sit down with an ancient, broken pattern that would take me three days to figure out, glance at it for five seconds, and pinpoint the exact spot where the mana flow was breaking. His Structure affinity made him a once-in-a-generation genius.

He didn’t just draw runes, he saw the world through systems, circuits, and structure. Where the rest of us saw flat stone, he saw a living framework waiting to be built. It was no wonder Zane had taken him as a personal student almost immediately.

In the beginning, I’d actually felt a bit sour that Caster couldn’t join us training under Professor Morgana. I wanted him to train with us. I thought it would be good for him too. But Zane had flatly refused to let Caster waste his talent.

And Caster himself had chosen this path...

Zane was brutally hard on him, harder than he was on anyone else in the academy.

He kept Caster in his workshop, drilling him on scripts and forcing him to forge arrays. But Zane did it because he knew Caster was talented. He was built to be a master. A guardian. The guy who built the armor, weapons, and barrier networks that would help us.

The doors at the front of the hall creaked open.

Professor Zane walked in first, his clean dark blue coat buttoned tightly to his throat, his dark hair combed back neatly. His cold, sharp eyes swept the empty benches, acknowledging my presence with a silent nod before he turned toward the podium.

Right behind him walked Caster.

Caster looked exhausted. Dark circles hung under his hazel eyes, and his messy brown hair was tied back with a leather cord that looked like it had seen better days. His dark uniform sleeves were rolled up past his elbows.

Watching him walk in alongside Zane, I was reminded of how much things had shifted over the last quarter. Caster trudged up the steps toward the back row, dropping his chair beside mine with a dull thud.

”Morning, Leo,” he muttered, letting out a long, weary breath as he collapsed onto the wooden bench. He rubbed his eyes with the back of his sleeve, leaving another streak of dark charcoal across his temple.

”Yo. You look like you’re barely holding up,” I said quietly, leaning back in my chair. ”Zane keep you in the forge all night again?”

”Don’t ask, bro,” Caster groaned. ”I feel like I passed out standing up.”

Despite the tiredness in his voice, there was no real complaint in it. He reached into his bag and pulled out a small brass piece covered in tiny carved runes. I looked at the brass piece. The rune work was terrifyingly tight, lines thinner than a human hair, woven together with perfect precision.

”He’s pushing you really hard, huh,” I noted.

”He is,” Caster replied softly, looking down at the piece in his hands. A tired but real flicker of satisfaction passed through his eyes. ”It’s exhausting... but I actually love it, Leo. It’s kind of refreshing. And it made me realize something, I know what I’m doing now. And I know why I’m doing it.”

I looked at him for a quiet second, then leaned back in my chair.

He’s holding his ground, I thought.

It was strange seeing the guy who used to panic over every tiny mistake seating here with real pride in his eyes. He wasn’t trying to force himself to be a frontline fighter like the rest of us anymore. He was becoming a master in his own right.

He set the mechanism aside and picked up his iron stylus, staring down at the blank stone slate on his desk with a steady, unyielding focus.

Down at the front of the room, Professor Zane struck the corner of his desk with a iron rod. The sharp sound echoed through the hall just as the remaining dozen students hurried through the doors, scrambling to take their seats in complete silence.

”Sit,” Zane commanded coldly, his sharp voice instantly freezing the room. He didn’t wait for latecomers. He simply stepped up to the front podium, his cold eyes sweeping over the rows of tense students as the room fell dead silent.

”...Today we cover multi-phase stabilization arrays,” Zane said, his voice flat and unyielding. ”Most of you still struggle to maintain proper mana flow on a basic single rune. That ends today. If you cannot layer a secondary stabilization array over an active elemental core without cracking the slate, you will fail next week’s practical exam. And if you fail, you will be stripped of your elective credit and forced to retake the entire course next semester.”

A quiet, collective groan passed through the classroom.

”A dual-layer array requires two things,” Zane continued, holding up a blank stone slate. ”Steady, unyielding intent on the main symbol, and perfect mana control on the outer circuit. If your intent wavers, the core collapses. If your mana control drops, the array shatters.”

With a quick flick of his wrist, he pushed a thin thread of mana through his fingernail, drawing a complex two-layer rune cleanly across the slate in less than three seconds. The slate gave a quiet hum and settled into a steady silver glow without a single flaw.

”You have eighty minutes,” Zane said, setting the glowing slate on his desk. ”Begin.”

The room went quiet. The only sound was the soft scrape of writing tools against stone as everyone got to work.

I pulled my slate forward and picked up my iron writing tool.

Beside me, Caster was already in his element. The moment his tool touched the stone, his eyes narrowed, his breathing slowed to a steady rhythm, and he began drawing the first rune with the calm accuracy of a master craftsman.

_

Eighty minutes felt like eighty hours, but somehow, the slate didn’t shatter in my hands.

Zane dismissed us without a single word of praise. Caster and I walked out of the classroom together while the rest of the students practically sprinted down the hallway to get away from him.

Once we got into the hallway, Caster told me he was heading straight back to the dorms to catch up on sleep before Zane dragged him back to teach him more. I didn’t try to stop him or talk him out of it. I actually felt a bit of pity for the guy, Zane was working him to the bone every single day.

But I was also glad Caster was sticking to his own path. He was figuring out what he wanted to do, and all I could do was wish him luck.

We split off, and I headed out toward the main central walkway alone.

Walking through the courtyard, my mind shifted straight to the upcoming written midterms.

The practical test at the end of the week was one thing, but I wasn’t really worried about that. My body knew how to fight, and Class Ascendant’s was strong. It was the written exams before the practical that were going to be a real headache.

My schedule was already packed.

Between practical combat with Morgana every morning, elemental control with Lorien, and then arrays with Zane, I didn’t have much room to breathe. And it wasn’t just the rune class, there was also Mana Theory with Vance, and History of the Gates, which I’d stupidly picked thinking I could just sit in the back, look at maps, and sleep through the lectures.

Now all of those written papers were piling up at once.

I wasn’t panicking. I knew I wasn’t going to fail or end up in remedial classes. But just barely passing wasn’t enough either. My written scores affected Class Ascendant’s overall rank, and I wasn’t going to let my laziness pull down the rest of the team.

I needed someone to help me with the theoretical parts, someone who could actually teach and wouldn’t waste my time with boring textbook speeches.

Finding someone wasn’t going to be hard. I already had the perfect person in mind. Even if she was strict and kind of a pain to deal with when it came to studying, I knew she’d help me out. After all, she was my big sister.

Sylvia might yell at me or dump a pile of paperwork on my head first, but she wasn’t going to turn me away when I asked for help. I adjusted my coat and changed direction, heading straight toward the third floor of the Student Council building to go find her.
