The Anomaly's Path

The long hallway of the residential building was quiet, except for the sound of Cordelia’s boots against the floor. I walked beside her in silence. The air between us felt thick and heavy. Outside, the storm had faded to a steady, cold drizzle that tapped against the tall windows.

When we reached the ground floor and stepped into the main lounge, I looked around. A dozen eyes snapped toward us instantly.

This wasn’t a fancy hall.

It was the open lounge area of the elite building where we always gathered, the place where we shared late-night meals, crashed on the sofas, and talked before missions. The moment we stepped into the room, every conversation died instantly.

Everyone was already there.

Roan, Alice, Riven, Nyra, Caster, Lyssaria, Elisabeth, Julia, and Amelia were scattered across the lounge, their postures tense as their eyes snapped toward us. One by one, their expressions shifted, as their gaze landed on Cordelia.

Even Malva stood quietly near the stairwell, her dark eyes fixed on us with an unreadable depth.

The silence in the room grew heavy, suffocating with respect and shared grief. Cordelia’s strawberry-blonde hair, which had always fallen in soft, immaculate waves past her waist, was gone. Sheared away with a knife, it now barely brushed her chin, cut rough and jagged at the edges.

No one spoke a word. No one needed to. The shift in the air, the raw presence she carried, and the sheer shock on everyone’s faces said everything.

Before anyone could speak, Julia stepped forward, her broad amber eyes shimmering with unshed tears. Beside her, Amelia moved without a second thought. Together, the two girls crossed the floor and wrapped their arms around Cordelia, pulling her into a tight, wordless embrace.

Cordelia didn’t break. She just stood there, her body stiff under the sudden weight of their warmth, her green eyes fixed unseeingly on the floor before her hands came up slowly, resting awkwardly against both Amelia’s and Julia’s backs.

My gaze drifted past the girls, cutting through the heavy air of the lobby until it landed on Malva. She stood in the shadow of the main stairwell, pale, completely motionless, her black eyes unreadable.

We hadn’t spoken a word since that night in the mist, I thought, my mind drifting back to the broken courtyard, the thick fog, and the illusion of the Harbinger of Ruin.

It wasn’t the right time to reach out to her. Neither of us was in a place to have a heavy conversation right now.

I had seen the painful truth of her memories through Echoes of the Unforgotten, the child hiding in a closet while her world burned, but we were both still recovering, both drowning in the chaos of the attack. Later, when the dust settled and the wounds weren’t so fresh, we would talk.

Malva gave a tiny, almost invisible nod. I nodded back, an unspoken understanding passing between us before I shifted my attention toward the doorway.

Arthur stood near the entrance, leaning lightly against the frame. His golden eyes were dull, hollowed out by exhaustion.

That bastard, I mused inwardly, a faint, bitter edge touching my thoughts. While the rest of us were fighting in the plazas, he held the entire eastern perimeter wall alone. Cut down waves of Grade 3 and Grade 4 beasts by himself.

I had heard the battle reports. Before the attack, Arthur was already Expert High rank. But during that desperate, lonely fight on the wall, he had pushed past his limits, stepping into Master Low rank.

Now he’s a full rank above me again.

A strange, quiet spark lit in my chest. It wasn’t hate, it was the drive of a rival. Arthur was moving through ranks faster than the original game story. But, it doesn’t matter now. I want him to get stronger. After all, growing stronger alone is boring anyway. He needs to keep pushing, because I’m not stopping either.

”Let’s move,” I said quietly. ”Everyone’s waiting out there.”

_

The storm had faded into a cold, light rain by the time we stepped out into the open grounds of Aegis Academy.

We didn’t stay on the academy grounds. We walked straight toward the Central Plaza of Aegis Prime, the big open square where the festival lights and market stalls had been buzzing just days ago. Now it was completely wrecked.

The city was unrecognizable. Black banners hung limp from broken walls. The air was still thick with the smell of wet ash, and rain.

Rows of wooden platforms, draped in black cloth, held the coffins of the fallen across the cold stone. The fountains were empty and still. At the front of the square stood a large stage, backed by four tall dark stone pillars carved with runes.

As we reached the grand central plaza, the true, painful scale of the tragedy became clear.

It wasn’t just students filling the square under a sea of black umbrellas. Thousands of people packed the plaza, grieving families, commoners, merchants who had set up stalls for the festival, local workers, visitors, and surviving staff.

The purple mist had made no difference between bloodlines; over a thousand civilians had died alongside forty-three students and dozens of teachers. Grief brought them all together in the cold rain.

Headmaster Vega stood before the crowd on the raised stage, his back straight, his face hard as stone. Beside him stood my grandfather, Zephyr von Celestial. Standing a short distance away was Damon Draven.

Headmaster Vega stepped forward, his deep voice carrying across the silent plaza.

”We do not gather today to offer empty comfort or empty words,” Vega said, his voice heavy with grief. ”I am the Headmaster of this academy, and the weight of every life lost here falls on my shoulders. I am deeply sorry. We failed to protect your children, your loved ones, and your friends from the horror that tore through our sky.”

Vega took a slow, heavy breath, his eyes sweeping across the sea of grieving faces in the silent plaza.

”We cannot undo the damage, but we can honor those who fell. We can speak the names of those who stood between the innocent and the abyss when the sky broke open. The monsters did not care about titles or bloodlines. It took commoners, shopkeepers, students, and noble fighters alike.”

Vega raised his hand, pointing toward the tall pillars behind him.

”Their names are carved into these stones today, not so we can simply weep over them, but so that Aegis Academy and this domain never forget the true cost of the peace we hold. They fought. They bled. And they bought us today with their tomorrows.”

With a slow wave of Vega’s sleeve, the heavy black cloth covering the stone pillars fell away. Runes glowed to life across the dark stone, lighting up hundreds of names carved deep into the surface. My eyes ran down the long, harsh lists.

Near the top of the center pillar, carved in bold, clean letters:

SIR KNIGHT MARIUS VALMONT

DAME FLINT

LUCIA JANE

THOMAS WARD

ELENA ROSS

PROFESSOR VEYRA

.

.

.

The list went on and on, rolling down the stone through dozens of unnamed civilians and forty-three dead students. I stared at Veyra’s name for a long moment, remembering her strict, firm lectures and how she had stood alone against a Grade 7 monster to buy time for the younger students.

Right beside the dead, I thought of those whose lives were changed forever, like Professor Vance, whose core was shattered in battle, leaving him unconscious in the medical ward, his future as a mage gone.

Yet, amidst the tragedy, the names carved on the stone were proof of why any of us were still breathing. If those students, guards, and faculty hadn’t thrown themselves into the fray, thousands more civilians would have been slaughtered in the plazas.

The entire crowd dropped to their knees or bowed their heads as a low, mournful bell rang out across the plaza.

Three minutes of silence fell over the thousands gathered in the rain. Beside me, Cordelia stood stiff. Her newly short hair was stuck to her neck by the cold drizzle, her jaw tight as she stared at Marius’s name. She looked hollow, trying so hard to hold herself together under the weight of her grief.

When the silence ended, Zephyr stepped forward to lead the next part of the ceremony.

”Though we mourn,” Zephyr’s voice boomed like thunder across the square, ”we must also honor the courage that kept this tragedy from becoming something worse.”

One by one, the names of those who stood out in the defense were called up to the stage to receive the Astra Silver Crest.

”Roan Sol-Valis.”

”Alice Scarlet.”

”Arthur Vale.”

”Cordelia Valerion.”

”Elian Silvanis.”

”Elisabeth von Noctis.”

”Sylvia von Celestial.”

Then came a pause.

”Seris Lunaria,” the announcer called out.

The plaza stayed quiet. No one stepped forward. I stared at the empty place.

I hadn’t seen Seris a single time since she arrived at the medical wing. I had expected her to be here today. I thought maybe she was well enough, that she would show up.

But the empty space on the stairs told me otherwise.

She had burned through her core to pull me back from death. A heavy knot of guilt twisted in my stomach. It was my fault she was stuck in that bed instead of standing here getting what she deserved. I needed to find Sylvia the moment this ceremony ended to learn the truth about her condition.

The announcer cleared his throat, adjusting the parchment in his trembling hands before calling out the next name.

”Morgana.”

Again, silence descended over the crowd. No one moved. A quiet ripple of confused whispers ran through the surrounding nobles and students as people realized she wasn’t coming either.

Of course she didn’t show up as well, I thought.

When my name was called, I stepped up the stairs.

My grandfather pinned the silver crest to my uniform himself. As his hand clamped onto my shoulder, his eyes locked onto mine, a faint, dangerous smirk touching his lips as he leaned in. ”You didn’t die out there, kid. Good. Keep growing, because the world’s about to get a whole lot messier.”

I stepped back, catching Damon gaze from the side of the stage. The young Transcendent gave me a single, cold, quiet nod, an acknowledgment of survival from a man driven to cross the gap to Sovereign.

After the medals were awarded, Headmaster Vega stepped back to the center of the podium to deliver the final order.

”Because of the heavy damage to our buildings, the ongoing investigations into the Gate, and to give families time to grieve,” Vega said gravely, ”Aegis Academy will officially close for one week. All students are ordered to return to their family homes or assigned quarters.”

A quiet murmur ran through the crowd, but no one argued, everyone needed time to heal. As the sea of black umbrellas slowly broke apart and filtered toward the gates, I made my way toward the damp edge of the courtyard.

Rain ran down the high stone arches, washing away the last traces of ash, but doing nothing to lift the heavy silence hanging over Aegis Prime.

I unpinned the Astra Silver Crest from my chest.

The cold metal felt unnaturally heavy in my palm. The shiny silver wings gleamed dully under the overcast sky, a prestigious award, a mark of valor that half the noble houses in the domain would kill to parade around.

To me, it felt completely meaningless.

I stared down at it, my fingers tightening around the sharp edges until the metal bit into my skin. I hadn’t done anything worthy of a medal. I hadn’t single-handedly turned the tide of the invasion or saved the academy.

While Arthur held an entire perimeter wall alone and shattered his limits to reach Master Low, while Cordelia bled on the front lines and lost her friend, and while Seris burned through her own core just to keep me breathing, I had barely managed to survive.

Holding a silver crest didn’t make me a hero. It just meant I was one of the lucky ones who got to walk away.

A bitter, quiet realization settled deep in my chest.

Growing up isn’t just about winning every fight or coming out on top; it’s about what you take away when you get beaten to a pulp. It’s about learning from every mistake, every close call, and every drop of blood spilled.

Surviving this slaughter wasn’t a triumph, it was a lesson. The world wasn’t waiting for me to catch up, the enemies were moving far faster than I had ever anticipated, and the gap between me and the true monsters of this world was still painfully wide.

I didn’t need a token of recognition. I needed to take everything I learned from this nightmare and sharpen it into unyielding strength. Next time, I wouldn’t be standing helpless while others bled around me.

I shoved the silver medal deep into the pocket of my pants, out of sight. I took a slow, deep breath of the freezing air, turning my shoulders toward the path leading to the medical wing.

”Leo.”

A soft, familiar voice called out from behind me before I could take a single step.

I turned to see my mother standing a few paces away, wrapped in a dark black dress, accompanied by a small escort of Celestial family guards. Her eyes were soft with relief, though heavy lines of fatigue marked her face.

”Mother...” I said, my tone softening.
