The Anomaly's Path

High above the Academy buildings, the Security Command Room was heavy with silence.

Outside the tall windows, the bruised sky poured purple mist over the jagged ridges of the Sealed Valley. Below, the Academy grounds spread out, old halls, large dorms, and wide training fields, all sitting like easy targets on the high ground.

Further out, surrounding the Academy on three sides, were the towers and wide streets of Aegis Prime.

Between these two worlds was the huge valley, a dead, sunken stretch of land where the trees had turned black and rotten. The Cradle of Tears lay buried under thousands of beasts pouring out from the floating Grade 8 Gate above.

And along the western ridge stood the barrier wall, the only thing keeping the city from being destroyed.

Inside the command room, the hum of the consoles pulsed like a steady heartbeat. Operators worked fast, their faces lit by blue maps of the land. Papers were scattered across the tables, and Professor Dain stood nearby, his eyes locked on the readings from the valley ridge.

Helene Draven stood near the front console, her sharp grey eyes fixed on the map of the valley. Her mind drifted back to when Vance had walked out those doors toward the ridge.

She had sent three of her best guards with him, hoping he could somehow fix the damaged system from a safe distance. But ten minutes ago, the signal from those guards had stopped, cut off by the roaring of high-grade beasts.

If he had forced that array back to life with his bare hands and core, his internal channels would be utterly shattered. He wouldn’t just be injured, he would be dying. And if Morgana ever found out that Helene had let Vance walk up to that relay tower alone...

Helene bit her thumbnail, her hands shaking as a cold weight settled in her chest.

”That stubborn, foolish idiot...” she whispered, her voice barely heard over the hum of the room. ”He never knows when to stop.”

Suddenly, the map changed.

A thin, pale thread of blue light appeared along the western ridge, right where the relay tower stood over the valley. It didn’t flash red or set off alarms. It just spread outward, slow and steady. The thread stretched across the sky like a pulled string.

It moved over the steep mountain slopes, rising up to form a solid ceiling over the valley. It didn’t clear the mist inside the valley, nor did it cover the whole area at once.

Instead, it locked in place over the western wall, forming a glowing ceiling that sealed the valley off from the Academy and the city beyond. It trapped the thick purple corruption underneath, blocking the pressure from the Grade 8 Gate Boss from pushing straight onto the streets of Aegis Prime.

”The mist over the western ridge is being held back!” an operator shouted. ”The barrier is stabilizing!”

Helene didn’t yell. She didn’t cheer.

She knew Vance was up there. She had known the moment the relay tower became his destination. She hadn’t been shocked that the barrier activated; she had been waiting for it with a growing, suffocating dread.

He had actually done it. He had bought them time, a fragile, desperate hope that gave the city precious minutes. Helene gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles white. She didn’t need anyone to tell her what that meant.

She stared down at the title of Vice President stamped on her desk papers.

The title felt like a heavy chain around her neck. From the moment the Gate Incursion started, she had wanted nothing more than to go out and fight alongside her colleagues on the front lines. But this position kept her tied to this desk, forcing her to track lives on a map.

However, the sky wasn’t collapsing anymore. The rift’s main push had been stopped by Vance’s ceiling. The only threats left were the beasts already loose inside the city.

She had reached her limit.

”Professor Dain,” Helene said quietly, reaching for her coat on the back of her chair.

Dain looked over, a heavy sigh escaping his lips. There was no surprise in his tired eyes, only the quiet realization of a man who had seen this coming the moment the barrier locked.

”The barrier is set,” she said, pulling on her coat and fastening the belt at her waist. ”The defenses are holding. I’m going to the western ridge.”

”I know,” Dain said softly, stepping around the table.

Helene paused, her hand on her belt as she met his gaze.

”You were never going to stay in this room once that ceiling went up,” Dain continued, a faint, sad smile touching his face. ”Go. Vance bought us this time with his hands. He deserves someone to bring him back.”

”Dain...”

”Leave the command room to me,” Dain said, placing a firm hand on the table. ”I’ve worked with these arrays for twenty years. I can handle it until you get back. Just get up that ridge and bring that stubborn fool back.”

Helene stared at him for a brief second before giving a single, sharp nod.

”Thank you,” she said, her voice sharp and focused.

She turned and walked straight out of the command room doors, heading for the northern path along the inner wall.

Meanwhile, the barrier’s activation caused a violent side effect on the ground.

Cut off from the purple mist pouring out of the Gate and trapped under the barrier, the monsters already inside the city stopped moving in organized waves. Without their leader’s pull, they went completely wild, throwing themselves against every barricade they could find.

In the eastern commercial district, the narrow streets were a war zone of broken glass and raging beasts.

Riven wiped his dark dagger against his sleeve. His steel-red eyes stayed cold as he scanned the quiet street. Beside him, Alice rested her massive longsword against her shoulder. Her wild crimson hair stuck to her forehead. A sharp, breathless grin lingered on her face despite the deep exhaustion in her body.

She wiped a streak of blood off her cheek with her arm, her breathing heavy and rough. ”These damn things aren’t backing off! The moment that ceiling went up, they turned into wild dogs!”

”They’re trapped,” Riven said smoothly. ”They know they can’t retreat to the valley. They’re trying to drag everything down with them.”

”It’s buying us time,” Lyssaria said softly, stepping forward. Her jade eyes were tired as she pulled a faint thread of healing magic around her bruised wrists. ”But the eastern shelter is compromised. We need to move.”

”Where to?” Alice asked.

”The central shelter near the main plaza,” Riven answered, putting his blades away. ”The lower lines are falling back there. If we stay out here, we’ll get cut off when the next wave hits.”

Without wasting another moment, the three turned and began moving quickly through the cleared streets, leaving the ruined eastern area behind as they headed toward the heart of the city.

On the other side of the residential area, Cordelia dragged her boots through the ground.

Her strawberry-blonde hair had come loose, falling over her pale face, while her emerald eyes burned with willpower. Her Sovereign Wind flickered weakly around her ankles, barely strong enough to keep her moving forward.

Behind her, Caster kept his shield raised, his hazel eyes locked on the alleyways. Beside him, Julia hugged her arms, using her Spatial Pressure to watch the air for sudden changes. Together, they guided a group of thirty tired, scared civilians through the last barricade.

Ahead, the open plaza came into view, though it was complete chaos.

Dozens of wounded civilians and exhausted students were being led into the shelter.

Inside the doors, the human cost was sickeningly clear: a terrified mother pressed her dirty apron over her daughter’s eyes to block out the sight of stretcher-bearers carrying a student whose arm had been crushed to pieces; a merchant sat against a pillar, staring blankly at his own bloody, ruined hands; and a first-year lay on the ground, gasping through a bloody chest wound while a medic pressed down hard to stop the bleeding.

Sylvia stood near the plaza, her dark eyes sharp despite the exhaustion on her face as she directed incoming survivors. Beside her at the shelter entrance, Elian held a shimmering barrier over the archway, his golden eyes flickering with exhaustion as he kept the defense up.

Sylvia’s head snapped toward the residential street as she spotted the approaching figures. ”Over here! Clear the path!” she shouted, guiding the incoming wave toward the doors. Her gaze swept over the battered group, her eyes widening as she counted them. ”Cordelia? Caster? You actually brought the whole block...”

Cordelia pushed the last civilian through the doors. Caster collapsed onto one knee, leaning on his hammer to catch his breath, while Julia sank against the wall, her hands shaking as her senses finally gave out.

”You made it,” Sylvia said, stepping toward Cordelia, her eyes scanning the battered group. ”We’re holding the plaza. The wounded are being taken to the lower rooms.”

Cordelia didn’t look at the shelter entrance. She didn’t step inside to rest. She stood in the middle of the plaza, her eyes fixed on the street they had just left behind. She turned her body back toward the smoke.

Where Marius had stayed behind alone, his sword raised against an endless wave of monsters so she could carry these people to safety.

”Cordelia?” Sylvia asked, noticing her gaze. ”Where are you going?”

”I... I have to go back,” Cordelia said, her voice quiet but sharp as glass. ”I’m going back. I have to save Marius.”

Elian stepped directly into her path, blocking the exit. ”You’re not going anywhere, Princess. Look at yourself. Your power is low, your channels are burned out, and you can barely hold your weapon.”

”Move, Elian,” she growled, her grip tightening.

”Don’t be a fool!” Elian snapped, his usual calm demeanor slipping into cold authority. ”Marius Valmont chose to hold that street so you could drag thirty civilians to safety. If you march back out there in your current state, you aren’t saving him, you’re turning his stand into a suicide pact!”

”He’s alone out there!” Cordelia shouted, her emotion breaking through her voice as tears cut lines through the grime on her cheeks. ”He stayed behind so I could walk away! Do you think I can just sit here while he gets torn apart?”

Caster pushed himself up from his knee, stepping between them. ”Princess Cordelia, listen to him. You can’t fight a horde in your current state.”

Julia looked up from the steps, her amber eyes wide with worry. ”Cordelia... please. Marius told us to keep you safe too...”

”Look around you!” Elian said, pointing his hand toward the crowd of civilians huddled near the shelter doors.

”Those people are alive right now because Marius held that line and trusted you to finish the job! Every single person who just walked through those doors knows his name because of what he did for them! Do not spit on his sacrifice by running back to get yourself killed!”

Cordelia froze, the harsh truth slamming into her like a physical blow. In her mind, her father’s solemn voice echoed back from the grand throne room of the Royal Capital, a lesson the King of the Human Domain had drilled into her since childhood:

”A ruler does not have the luxury of personal grief on the battlefield, Cordelia. When people look to the Valerion bloodline, they are not looking for a friend who will cry with them; they are looking for the pillar that holds up the sky. You cannot save every soldier, but you must honor every sacrifice.”

She closed her eyes as the memory cut deep into her heart.

Once again, the cold reality of her duty made her feel small, powerless, and utterly hollow. She was a royal princess, carrying the legendary Valerion blood in her veins, yet here she stood... incapable of saving the man who had just thrown his life away to buy her time.

”Trust him,” Elian added, his tone softening just a fraction, though his eyes remained firm.

”Marius isn’t a rookie. He knew exactly what he was doing when he stayed on that street. Save your strength, recover your mana, and let the defense line do its job. In fact, as soon as the plaza is secure, Sylvia and I will take a squad back down that street to get him ourselves.”

Cordelia stared at Elian, her jaw clenching.

She looked at the civilians. She looked back toward the street. She bit her lower lip so hard a drop of blood welled up, her hand shaking against her weapon handle, before she finally let out a long, shuddering breath and backed down.

”If you delay that squad by even a minute...” she whispered, her voice trembling as she looked Elian dead in the eye, ”...I will go back down that avenue myself, with or without your permission.”

Without waiting for his answer, she turned on her heel, her bloodied dress trailing behind her as she walked away toward the shelter steps to recover her mana.
