The Anomaly's Path

The Astra Union’s High Sanctuary was not a dark underground room. It floated high above the clouds. It was a huge hall made of black stone and white marble, with tall arched windows that looked out at the endless sky.

Around the big round table, the rulers of the world sat divided.

Only a few High Seats were actually inside the sanctuary. Sitting at the head of the table was High Elder Sylas Moonshadow, an ancient elf whose face was calm but heavy with years of age. To his right sat Grand Duke Orion Ashford, a broad man in dark armor with sharp steel-red eyes.

Further down sat Cardinal Titus Corvin, silent as a statue with his hand on his sword. Next to him was Lord Caspian von Noctis, leaning back with his fingers pressed together. In the shadows behind them, the living darkness of The Night Stalker blended into the dark.

Near the entrance stood The Silver Spear, tall and straight, like a soldier who had never lost a fight. The rest of the world’s leaders were not there in person. They appeared as tall, clear magical projections floating around the table.

The projections showed Emperor Aldric Valerion of the Human Domain, King Thandril Sol-Valis of the Elves, Vampire Matriarch Liliana von Noctis, Beastkin High Chieftain Varga Ironclaw, Dwarf King Borin Ironwell, Representative Lord Evander Runeweaver of House Runeweaver, High Priestess Celestia, and the Arcanum Sage of the Magic City.

Even Duke Noah von Celestial appeared from his estate, sitting straight with calm blue eyes.

Some important people were still missing. The Oracle was not in her seat. her health had been getting worse after her recent visions, so she had to rest.

The Head of House Nightshade was absent. Damon Draven was at the academy’s perimeter. And Headmaster Vega had left Aegis Academy to deal with an urgent rift near the southern border, rushing to finish it so he could come back.

Even with all these kings, emperors, and powerful leaders gathered together, no one spoke. The tension in the room was so thick it could choke a weaker person.

They had just received an emergency message from Aegis Academy about a possible Grade 8 Gate opening above the Sealed Valley. But what truly sent a chill through the room was that they already knew who was behind it.

It was... The Fallen.

The cult had done something like this before, and recently, after the Union captured one of their high-ranking members, they learned that an attack was coming. The High Seats had been quietly hoping it wouldn’t happen, but now their worst fears were coming true.

Crunch.

The sound echoed through the hall.

Crunch.

Every eye at the table slowly turned toward the far end. Sitting back in a heavy chair, with both of his boots propped up on the clean table, was a man with black hair and bright ocean-blue eyes. He looked very young, almost exactly like Noah, but without any of the Duke’s calm control.

A huge, rough black steel sword leaned carelessly against the table beside him.

Zephyr von Celestial was eating an apple.

He didn’t give a damn about the silence. He didn’t care about the glares from the grand duke or the rulers on the screens. He just chewed, tossed the core in his hand, and stared out the window.

Disrespectful was an understatement.

Orion Ashford, a man who demanded perfect behavior from everyone around him, did not say a word. Neither did the High Elder, nor the kings.

Because the man eating an apple was Zephyr von Celestial. The God of Thunder. The Sword God. A man who possessed multiple titles of terror across domains, yet openly despised the fact that humans insisted on putting the word ”god” in his name.

Everyone in the room knew his temper.

They knew that if anyone called him out for his arrogance, he wouldn’t argue, he would draw that blade and turn the sanctuary into a crater.

High Elder Sylas let out a soft cough to break the silence.

”We have received the message from Helene Draven,” Sylas said, his voice low and steady as it echoed through the room. ”The rift above Aegis Academy has broken through. The readings confirm a Grade 8 Gate opening directly over the Sealed Valley.”

A tense murmur spread through the floating images. A Grade 8 Gate was not just a monster attack, it was a disaster that could change the whole land.

”Helene and the teachers are setting up a defense line,” Sylas continued, turning his old eyes toward the chair at the side. ”Zephyr. The Council needs you to go there now. What do you say?”

Zephyr took another bite of his apple, chewed slowly, and didn’t even look up.

”Not going,” Zephyr said flatly.

The room snapped.

”What?” Emperor Aldric said, his voice sharp. ”You are a High Seat! The most powerful fighter! Why aren’t you going?”

Even Noah’s image shifted slightly, his ocean-blue eyes widening a little as he looked at his father. Noah knew better than to question Zephyr’s choices, but the flat refusal surprised him.

Grand Duke Orion Ashford rested his heavy hands on the table, his voice like grinding metal. ”Have you lost your mind, Zephyr? Or did your brain shrink along with your body? What do you mean you aren’t going?”

Zephyr tossed the apple core over his shoulder. It bounced off a vase and rolled across the floor. ”I mean I’m not going. You heard me the first time, Orion.”

”Your daughter-in-law is in that valley!” Orion barked, his voice echoing through the hall. ”Your grandson and your granddaughter are trapped inside that academy right now! House Celestial claims to love its bloodline enough to burn down domains, yet you sit here eating fruit while they face a Grade 8 rift?”

Zephyr leaned his head back against the chair and grinned, his eyes flashing with sharp, mocking amusement.

”My grandson is in the academy, yes,” Zephyr said, eyeing Orion up and down. ”Your grandson is in there too, isn’t he, Orion? Why don’t you go? Step up. Be the great hero you always wanted to be. Jump down there and save him. Who knows? Maybe if you hit that gate hard enough, you’ll finally step out of my shadow.”

Orion’s dark aura flared violently, shadow whipping around his image like sharp blades. ”Watch your mouth, old man.”

”Or what?” Zephyr chuckled, his smile vanishing as a low hum of lightning vibrated through the floor. ”You’ll send your shadow guards? Tell them to bring a dustpan.”

”Enough,” the High Priestess said, her calm voice cutting between them. She didn’t raise her voice, but it was clear. ”We are not here to fight like mercenaries.”

Zephyr scoffed, leaning back again. ”Oh, please. Save the holy talk, Priestess. You all sound ridiculous.”

High Elder Sylas raised a hand, sending a faint, heavy pressure across the table to calm the rising tempers. He turned his eyes directly onto Zephyr.

”Zephyr,” Sylas said steadily. ”Stop the games. If you have a reason for not going, say it. Why are you refusing to act?”

”Why are you asking me now?” Zephyr laughed, the sound completely cold. ”Did my opinion matter when you put those kids in the Sealed Valley for the exam in the first place? Did you ask me before you threw my grandson into that meat grinder?”

King Thandril Sol-Valis frowned. ”Lord Zephyr, bringing up the past now is pointless. Those kids signed up for the exam. They knew the risks. It’s their fate to be tested so the strongest rise to the top—”

”Fate?” Zephyr interrupted, his voice dropping into a dangerous, rough tone.

”You call sacrificing thirty thousand kids for your political show ’fate’? You didn’t care about their lives when they were dying in that valley months ago. You only care now because your own precious heirs are caught in the middle, and you’re scared your bloodlines are about to be wiped out.”

He waved his hand toward the floating images of the domain leaders.

”Tell me, King Thandril, the kids who died in that exam? Were they not children? Did their parents not cry for them? You sat here nodding along when they bled out. But now that a Grade 8 is sitting on your children’s throats, you want me to run over there and act as your personal cleanup crew?”

”You are an arrogant, bitter old madman!” Emperor Aldric growled.

”Ah, yes! I am!” Zephyr grinned, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees. ”I am a madman. And because I am a madman, I’ll tell you exactly how this goes.”

”You wanted a brutal test to weed out the weak? You got one. That Gate is their trial now. If my grandson, your kids, and those students survive it, they’ll walk out stronger than any of us. If they die... then according to the very rules you all voted for, they were too weak, and it was their fate.”

Silence fell over the sanctuary. Dead, heavy silence.

Zephyr had thrown every piece of their own lies right back into their faces. He used their cold, heartless logic to trap them completely. Every leader in the room knew he cared deeply about his family. They knew he was being petty, but no one could argue with a single word he said.

Before Orion or Sylas could speak, the temperature in the room dropped to freezing cold. No warning lights flashed. No alarms went off. The mana inside the sanctuary suddenly turned dark and wrong. The shadows behind the table stretched unnaturally, spilling across the floor like black ink.

Clap. Clap. Clap.

The space above the center of the round table cracked like thin ice. A small, dark hole opened into the air.

A man stepped out of the tear, landing lightly on the table.

He wore simple, plain dark clothes under a long black coat that seemed to drink in the light. His hair fell in loose, dark waves around a pale, unnaturally smooth face — a face carved with terrifying, perfect beauty. His hands were bare, resting casually at his sides.

In his right eye, a symbol burned with a cold, pale silver light, a swirling, twisting spiral surrounded by jagged, glass-like cracks, with a tiny point of absolute darkness at its center. The Harbinger of Ruin and... the Leader of The Fallen.

A heavy, instinctive fear gripped the room. Titus Corvin’s hand tightened on his sword until his knuckles turned white. Caspian’s crimson eyes narrowed into slits. The Silver Spear took a small step forward, his mana flaring like a quiet storm.

The Fallen Leader ignored the weapons and the angry stares. He walked calmly across the table, stepping over papers and maps, stopping right in front of Zephyr.

”My, my,” the Fallen Leader murmured, his voice smooth and deep, carrying an old, echoing sound. ”What bold words, Zephyr. Truly fitting for the God of Thunder.”

Zephyr didn’t flinch. His ocean-blue eyes stayed unreadable, his face like stone.

”Aren’t you going to greet me?” the Fallen Leader asked, a light, mocking smile touching his lips. ”It’s been a while. Though... I see you look younger now. Your body has changed quite a bit since we last met.”

The Fallen Leader leaned down slightly, his silver spiral eye glowing. ”Does that mean the cuts I left in your body back then finally faded? How disappointing. It makes me want to tear you open again just to see if you still bleed the same.”

The room chilled. Everyone present, Orion, Elder Sylas, the Matriarch, knew exactly who this man was and what he had done in the past.

”...What do you want?” Zephyr asked quietly. His tone was flat, completely devoid of his previous wild energy.

The Leader laughed softly, stepping off the table and taking an empty throne near the edge. He crossed his legs, resting his chin on his hand.

”What do I want? Nothing. What could any of you possibly give me? Nothing.” He swept his gaze across the room, smiling. ”Instead, you should all feel honored that I decided to grace your little meeting with my presence.”

He turned his silver eye back toward Zephyr.

”But are you truly so sure about your words, Zephyr? About the deaths? Are you really not worried about your family? What if my people cut their throats while they cry for their legendary grandfather to save them?”

Zephyr didn’t break composure. A slow, sharp grin spread across his face, matching the Fallen Leader’s stare.

”My grandson isn’t weak,” Zephyr said, his voice full of confidence. ”And neither is my family. If your people go after them, they’ll just end up as dead. Why don’t you worry about your own trash instead?”

The Harbinger’s smile remained, but his eye narrowed slightly.

High Elder Sylas raised a hand, sending a heavy pressure over the room to keep order. He stared directly at the intruder, his voice grave and firm. ”Harbinger. Did you force the Grade 8 Gate to open in the Sealed Valley?”

”Force it?” The Fallen leader chuckled, shaking his head. ”I didn’t open anything. That Gate is simply the world’s karma catching up to you. You build your grand cities, you sacrifice common blood to test your elite heirs, and then you act shocked when the world tears itself apart.”

He turned his gaze toward High Priestess Celestia’s projection, his tone dripping with quiet irony.

”In a way, High Priestess, your precious Union and I do the exact same thing. When I erase a city, you label me a villain. When you sacrifice thousands of students in a slaughterhouse, you call yourselves sovereigns protecting the future. What an unfair world we live in, don’t you think?”

Celestia’s projection remained solemn, her eyes filled with sorrow, but she did not dignify the provocation with an answer.

The Fallen Leader let out a low, amused breath. He slowly stood up from the chair, stepping smoothly toward the edge of the light. He swept his eye over the people in the room and the floating images alike, watching the small shifts in their postures as he began to walk a slow, careful circle around the table.

”You stand here judging me,” the Fallen Leader spoke, his voice dropping into a cold rhythm that echoed off the walls. ”But look at yourselves. Look at the fear beneath your crowns and grand reputations.”

”You call yourselves kings, grandmasters, and Sovereigns, yet all I see is a herd of scared cattle waiting to be slaughtered. You think you are bound together by strength? No. You are bound together by fear...

The elf king fears the passage of time, watching his immortality turn into an endless sentence. The human emperor fears his own bloodline, terrified his son will slit his throat for a crown. The blood-soaked matriarch fears the day her eternal youth becomes an empty cage, clinging to old bloodlines to convince herself she is still alive.

The warmonger fears peace, because without a war he is just an uneducated brute.

The dwarf king fears the silence beneath his mountains, terrified that for all his iron and stone, his legacy will turn to dust. The holy priestess fears the silence of her Goddess, scared that the light she prays to is nothing more than a dying flame in a cold world.

And the archmage fears death, spending his whole life hoarding secrets just to buy one more breath.

Every crown in this room is a fortress built out of terror. You spend your entire lives hoarding legacies, lands, and titles, constantly looking over your shoulders, terrified of the high tide.

And then you look at me...”

He stopped right at the edge of the table, his movement ending in complete stillness. His pale face was lit by the soft glow of the floating images around him. His dark coat seemed to drink in the light.

”You cannot threaten a man with death when he has already made peace with the grave. You cannot threaten to burn my lands, for I hold no dirt. You cannot kill those I love, for I have stripped my heart down to pure, cold stone. You have spent your lives hoarding things for the world to take away from you. I spent mine tearing them all down myself.

Fear is the oldest, sharpest blade in existence, and every single one of you is bleeding out from it right now. You are slaves to your wealth, slaves to your bloodlines, slaves to your fragile lives. I am slave to nothing.

I have swallowed my own ruin. I have walked through the deepest fire and let it burn away everything that could ever be broken.

You fear the monster waiting in the dark. I am the dark. And when a man has nothing left to lose, he doesn’t just survive the abyss... he rules it.”
