The Anomaly's Path

[Leo’s POV]

A few minutes earlier...

The inner sanctum didn’t look like the lair of a monster. It was a tomb of buried memories.

A massive, open cathedral carved out of cold, weeping black stone that had never felt the warmth of the sun. High above, the ceiling was lost in thick, unnatural darkness, but the floor below was lit by a faint, pulsing violet light that came from the center of the room.

Along the perimeter of the room stood dozens of stone alcoves.

Inside each one, the petrified bodies of those who had come before — travelers, legendary explorers, elite adventurers, and proud soldiers — remained frozen forever. Some were kneeling with their stone hands clamped over their faces; others were standing, reaching desperately toward the center of the room as if begging for a salvation that never arrived.

The stone had captured their final expressions with agonizing precision. You could see the raw terror in the lines of their mouths, the deep sorrow in their hollow eyes, the exact, tragic moment their wills had snapped and they simply stopped fighting.

...And in the very center of it all knelt the Statue of Unforgotten Sorrow.

It was huge.

A giant figure of grey stone and rusted iron armor that had long since fused with its petrified skin. Its greatsword was stuck deep into the floor between its knees, holding it in place like an anchor.

From the center of its chest, where a pulsing stone heart glowed with a deep purple light, a thick fog poured out without stopping. This was the fog that had carried eight hundred years of grief into every corner of the valley.

A living monument of a broken spirit crying in the dark.

Leo stood alone in front of the giant statue. There was no hesitation in his stance.

The heavy weight of the room pressed down on his shoulders, trying to force him to his knees, trying to pull up the ghosts of his own past — the memory of Mia, the heavy guilt of Roran, the suffocating desire to simply stop moving and disappear into the quiet dark after the trial.

He had felt that exact temptation before. He knew what it was like to want to kneel and never get up again.

But he was not going to kneel. Not here. Not anymore.

Leo stepped forward. His boots crunched against the thin layer of grey ash on the stone floor. He stopped right in front of the kneeling giant, looking up at its blank, empty helmet. The thick purple fog swirled around his legs, hissing as it touched his own aura.

”...You’ve been kneeling in this dark for too long,” Leo spoke, his voice quiet, lacking any malice or arrogance, carrying only the calm weight of someone who had made up his mind. ”Let the fire carry what you couldn’t.”

He raised Tempest.

With a sharp push of his will, the blade lit up with black soul flames. They cast dark shadows across the cathedral walls. The fire didn’t crackle or burn with heat. It was silent and hungry — made to eat the things you couldn’t touch, to feed on everything.

With a single, precise movement, Leo lunged. He drove Tempest straight through the statue’s pulsing purple heart, burying the sword up to the hilt into the stone chest.

For a second, everything was still.

Then the black fire exploded outward from the blade, digging deep into the cracks of the stone. The fire began to feed. Slowly, it ate away at the purple core, tearing through the old grief that had kept the thing trapped here for hundreds of years.

...And then, the world disappeared.

_

Leo’s reality didn’t just blur; it was violently replaced as the raw memories of the soul within the stone flooded directly into his consciousness. There were no written words, no disembodied voices explaining who these people were.

Leo didn’t know their names. He didn’t know the name of the knight, or his wife, or his daughter.

But the raw, piercing images and overwhelming feelings crashed into his mind like a physical tide, making him feel the story as if it were his own.

He felt the warmth of a late autumn sun before he even opened his eyes.

Suddenly, he was looking through the knight’s eyes at a wide, golden field of wheat swaying under a clear sky.

A little dark-haired girl with bright green eyes was running through the grass, her small hands reaching for a butterfly. Her laugh rang out so clearly it made Leo’s chest hurt with a deep, unfamiliar warmth.

A few steps away stood a woman with rough hands and a gentle smile. Her hand rested over her heart as she watched the child with soft, peaceful eyes.

Peace and simplicity.

A life built on small, beautiful things.

Then the sky cracked open.

It started as a thin line — a scar across the blue, but it spread fast, splitting wider and wider until the heavens themselves looked like a broken mirror.

Purple and gold light bled through the wound, thick and heavy, and with it came mana, not the thin, gentle mana of the old world, but a flood. Wild and violent, crashing down like a waterfall that would never stop.

The golden field caught fire.

The ground shook. The air grew thick and hard to breathe. And then the gates opened.

Tears in reality, scattered across the valley. One appeared in the sky above the temple. Another tore open in the forest. Another split the ground near the river. From these gates came the monsters — too many legs, too many teeth, eyes that burned with endless hunger.

They poured out like water from a broken dam.

The little girl was screaming, her small voice swallowed by the sound of falling wooden beams and the roar of the mana flood.

The image shifted violently.

Now, Leo felt the weight of a massive greatsword in his hands, his arms completely numb, his armor cracked and dripping with thick, black monster blood. He was standing at the heavy doors of a stone temple.

The gates were still open. The monsters kept coming. The forest ahead was an ocean of glowing eyes. He didn’t step back. He didn’t fall.

For three days and three nights, he just kept swinging, his lungs burning like fire, his vision blurring into a smear of red, driven entirely by the desperate knowledge that the people — his family — were hiding in the dark behind him.

The fourth day arrived, bringing a suffocating, dead silence. The knight turned around, his chest heaving, a broken smile attempting to form on his lips as he prepared to tell them that the nightmare was over.

But the heavy stone door was wide open.

Leo felt the absolute, soul-crushing despair that followed. The people hadn’t stayed. Panic had driven them out into the dark forest while the knight fought at the front. And there, near the edge of the blackened trees, lay the woman, her arms still wrapped tightly around the small form of their daughter, protecting her even in death.

The little girl’s face was frozen in terror, her small, pale hand still stretched out toward the temple door. Toward her father.

Toward the protector who had been looking the wrong way.

The knight did not scream. He did not cry. He walked back into the silent temple, dropped his weapon, and fell to his knees in the exact center of the stone floor. He clasped his hands together and prayed.

He begged the gods, the spirits, the sky — anyone, for death, for forgiveness, for the power to turn back time and undo the slaughter. He prayed until his throat was raw and bleeding, but the silence of the temple remained absolute.

No one answered. The gods were blind. The world didn’t care.

Then, a presence stirred in the shadows.

It had no face, no physical form, but it carried a presence that sank straight into his bones — a cold warmth that touched his shattered heart.

Along with its arrival, an ancient, echoing title burned itself into the memory itself, a name known only by the weight it held in the universe: The Forgotten One — the watcher of the lost, the keeper of the forgotten, the one who remembers when everyone else forgets.

The entity showed the knight his own future: a broken man rotting in an anonymous temple, his family’s memory turning to dust, completely forgotten by a world that would never care about his three-day stand.

Then the being made an offer.

Stay or turn to stone.

Let your grief become fog and your tears turn to black ink. You will suffer forever, but they will never be forgotten. Everyone who walks into this place will feel your pain.

They will remember your loss.

The knight did not hesitate.

He chose to stay, not for glory, but because he could not bear the thought of his family disappearing from the memory of the living. His skin hardened into grey stone. His armor fused with his flesh. His first black tear hit the floor, beginning eight hundred years of pure, endless sorrow.

The memories shattered like glass, throwing Leo back into his own body.

He stumbled back a step. His boots hit the ash. His chest heaved. His ocean-blue eyes were wide with shock and a heavy, heavy silence. The purple fog was gone. Eaten completely by the black flames.

_

The cathedral was empty. The weight that had pressed down on him for hours was lifted.

What did he just see? Who were those people? He didn’t know their names, but he knew their tragedy and pain. The statue wasn’t a monster. It was a father. A husband. A man who had built an eternal grave out of his own inability to let go of his grief.

As the last traces of the stone heart crumbled into grey ash, a final whisper echoed through the chamber. It didn’t come from the physical room; it drifted directly from the fading soul flames, a soft, ancient resonance belonging to The Forgotten One itself.

”He was forgotten by the world. But I remembered him. And now you remember him too...”

”Do not let grief become your... grave.”

Leo’s breath caught. Those words hit something deep inside him. He stood completely still in the center of the massive, quiet chamber, the words settling deep into his mind.

The nameless knight’s life was a warning.

He had been a strong man, a good soldier who fought until his body broke, but the moment he lost what he loved, he had knelt down and never found the strength to stand back up. He let his sorrow become a prison of stone.

Leo looked down at his own trembling hands.

He had almost done the exact same thing. After the trial, when everything felt empty and the weight of the dark threatened to pull him under, he had wanted to stop. He had wanted to find a quiet place to disappear and never get back up.

But he hadn’t.

He had kept walking. He had come to the academy, he had fought through the monsters, and he was standing right here, holding a blade that had just set an ancient spirit free. He was not that knight.

He still had people to protect — Mom, Dad, little Mia, and the others he loved or were under his care. He still had a reason to stand.

Suddenly, a sharp jolt ran through Leo’s mana pathways.

Eating such an old, packed source of spiritual energy with his black flames sent a huge wave of power back into his own core. The flood of clean energy rushed through his body, breaking down the walls of his current rank like a crashing wave.

His power burst out in a wild flash of black lightning and dark flames, the force of it cracking the stone floor under his boots.

A notification materialized in his vision, but his mind barely processed the words.

[Breakthrough Achieved: You have reached Expert Low.]

Leo gritted his teeth, forcing the newly expanded mana back down into his core, stabilizing the wild energy. He had so many questions. What was The Forgotten One? What kind of entity watched over the lost like that?

And he could feel it — a breakthrough wasn’t the only thing he gained. His flames had consumed something else. He didn’t know what it was yet, he needed to check what else he had gotten from the statue.

But he quickly pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind. He didn’t have the luxury to sit down and examine his status.

”Right now, that doesn’t matter,” Leo muttered to himself, his voice echoing in the empty cathedral as he sheathed Tempest with a sharp, clean click.

”I need to check on the others.”

He turned and ran toward the big stone archway that led back to the side rooms. Pushing his new speed to its limit, he tore through the dark corridor like a streak of black lightning, eager to make sure his team had survived the fog.
