The Anomaly's Path

The silence didn’t just stay. It pressed down on us like a weight, thick with the smell of blood that had already vanished from the grey ash.

Arthur stood entirely frozen, his face completely bloodless. His sword remained raised high, the radiant golden light of his mana flickering violently like a dying flame in a storm. His chest heaved as he stared at the place where Amelia’s body was.

”Amelia...?”

The name left his mouth like a broken hollow whisper. He blinked rapidly, his golden eyes wide and desperate, searching the shifting purple mist as if expecting her to magically piece herself back together from the smoke.

But there was... nothing.

Roan’s usual grin had completely vanished. His spear hung limp at his side, his storm-silver eyes fixed on the empty floor where the body should have been. For once, the elf prince had absolutely nothing to say.

Beside him, Elisabeth’s hand was still on her sword, but her grip had loosened. Her violet eyes were narrowed, not in anger, but in calculation. She was scanning the mist, trying to understand what had just happened.

Her expression was unreadable.

Then, the confusion violently warped back into unadulterated fury.

The veins in Arthur’s neck bulged as he whipped his head toward me, the sheer force of his rage causing the surrounding fog to ripple. He took a massive, heavy step forward, his knuckles turning dead white as he gripped his hilt with both hands.

”WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO?!” he roared, his voice cracking with a terrifying mixture of grief and madness. He raised the blade again, ready to swing blindly.

”Why did you do that?! Answer me, Leo! Was she not your friend too?! How could you just — how could you kill her without even blinking?! Were you that angry at her for choosing me instead of you?!”

I didn’t draw Tempest again. I didn’t even shift my stance.

I simply tilted my head back slightly, letting a long, slow sigh escape my lips as I looked at him with entirely blank eyes.

”Oye, you love-drunk fool,” I said, my voice cutting through his screaming. ”Calm down your racing pulse and actually use your eyes. Look at the floor. Look at the blade. Was that really Amelia?”

Arthur’s breath hitched. He paused mid-stride, his gaze involuntarily dropping to the glossy black stone beneath my boots.

There was no body.

There was no crimson stain turning the grey ash to mud. My sword, resting loosely at my side, was perfectly clean, reflecting the dim purple veins of the chamber without a single drop of moisture on the steel.

It had never touched her. It had never touched anyone.

The illusion had shattered completely.

Arthur stared at the empty floor, the terrifying rage in his golden eyes rapidly draining away, replaced by confusion.

Beside him, Roan let out a low whistle, his spear twirling once before he rested it on his shoulder. His grin returned, but it was smaller than usual, tired, almost. ”....Well, damn,” he muttered. ”That was a good trick. Even I didn’t see through it.”

Elisabeth said nothing. She just looked at me, her violet eyes studying my face like she was seeing something new.

”What...?” Arthur muttered, his voice entirely blank. ”How... how did you know?”

”Because the real Amelia wouldn’t beg,” I said, my voice steady as I locked eyes with Arthur. ”She’s far too proud for that. She made her choice a long time ago, and she doesn’t carry the pathetic regret that the fog just tried to play back to me.”

I took a step forward, my boots clicking against the black stone.

”More importantly, I have an ability that lets me see the soul. The moment that fake Amelia stepped out of the mist, I could tell she was empty. There was nothing inside. It was just a puppet made to look like her. A trap designed to make me freeze.”

I swept my gaze across the three of them, my voice turning hard.

”Get your shit together, all of you! We were trapped under the monster’s psychological trap the exact second we crossed the iron threshold of the outer sanctum. The real Amelia didn’t run ahead of us. She didn’t magically teleport into the inner chamber. She’s lost somewhere in this fog, stuck inside an illusion of her own.”

Arthur lowered his sword slowly. His arms were shaking. He looked out into the purple mist.

”Are we... are we just leaving her then?” Arthur asked, his voice hoarse. ”We aren’t going to look for her?”

”The Amelia I know is strong,” I said, turning my back on them and facing the darker, faster-pulsing violet glow at the far end of the chamber. ”She isn’t weak enough to let some fake illusion break her mind. If she can’t handle a monster that plays with your head, then she has no business being here in the first place.”

I didn’t wait for Arthur’s answer.

I didn’t care if my words sounded cruel to him and the others. This was something they had to get through on their own. If I did everything for them, they would never be ready for what was coming. They would die when things got even worse.

Besides, Amelia is strong.

She will... survive. She has to.

”This monster will use your past,” I warned, my boots already cutting through the grey ash as I began to move deeper into the sanctum.

”It will dig up your deepest grief, your ugliest regrets, and your oldest trauma. And if you don’t have any of those things? It will gladly create a fresh nightmare out of your current fears. Focus your minds. Don’t trust anything you see or hear unless you can feel the weight of the steel behind it.”

”We keep moving,” I commanded.

Without looking back, I started running. My figure quickly disappeared into the thick purple smoke of the inner sanctum.

Behind me, after a moment of hesitation, the others followed.

[Amelia’s POV]

One second, I was walking directly behind Arthur’s shoulder. I could hear the faint, comforting scrape of his sword, I could see Leo navigating the narrow corridor just a few paces ahead.

The next second, the air went completely dead.

A thick wave of purple fog rushed into the passage like a flood, heavy and dense. It didn’t just block my sight — it wiped out everything. The temperature dropped fast. The cold bit through my clothes and sank into my bones.

”Arthur...?” I called out, my voice sounding strangely flat and muffled, as if the smoke was actively eating the sound waves before they could travel.

No one answered.

”Roan? Elisabeth?”

Silence.

An absolute, suffocating silence that made the blood rushing through my own ears sound deafening.

I stopped in my tracks, my fingers tightening around my staff. The gemstone at the tip glowed with a faint light, but it barely cut through the thick purple haze around me.

An illusion, I thought, my heart hammering violently against my ribs as I tried to force my breathing into a steady rhythm. Leo warned us about mental interference before we entered. The fog is trying to isolate me. I just need to find the edge of the boundary.

I took a cautious step forward, using my staff to feel the floor beneath the layer of ash. I walked for what felt like several minutes, the corridor seemingly stretching out into an endless, repeating void, until the mist abruptly began to thin.

But what lay beyond the smoke wasn’t the dark, polished stone of the inner sanctum.

My boots were suddenly sinking into soft, pink petals.

A gasp caught in my throat as I looked up.

The oppressive black walls had vanished, replaced by the towering, pristine white stone pillars of the Nightshade estate’s private courtyard. Above me, cherry blossom trees swayed in a warm breeze, showering the grass with delicate pink petals.

The sun was warm on my skin.

And standing right beneath the largest tree, his back turned to me, was a boy with messy black hair and a simple training uniform.

”Leo...?” I whispered, my voice trembling.

The boy turned around slowly.

But it wasn’t the cold, unyielding man who had just led us through the ruins. This was the Eight-year-old Leo. The boy who used to wait for me by the fountains, whose eyes used to light up the absolute moment I entered the room.

”Amelia,” he said, his voice carrying that gentle, familiar warmth that I hadn’t heard in years. ”...Why are you standing all the way over there? Come here. Look at the flower crown I made for you.”

My chest ached so intensely it felt like a physical blade had pierced my lungs. I took an involuntary step forward, my hand extending toward him, before a sudden, terrifying realization slammed into my mind.

No. It’s a lie. He doesn’t look at me like that anymore. He doesn’t smile like that.

”You’re not real,” I choked out, tears instantly welling in my eyes, blurring the vibrant pink of the garden. ”You’re just a trick of the statue. Get away from me!”

The boy’s gentle smile didn’t falter.

Instead, his form began to flicker, the warm sunlight of the courtyard rapidly darkening into a sickly, bruised purple glow.

”Of course I’m real, Amelia. What are you talking about?” a different voice echoed. It wasn’t the gentle boy anymore. It was the current Leo — the one whose eyes held nothing but absolute indifference whenever he looked at me now.

Suddenly, more figures started to appear from the shadows beneath the cherry blossom trees.

My parents stood there, their faces completely hidden by dark, weeping veils, their fingers pointing accusingly at my chest. Beside them, Arthur lay broken in the grass, his uniform torn and soaked in blood. His eyes were empty.

”Look at what your choices did,” the weeping figures of my parents whispered, their voices mixing together in a horrible way. ”You broke the engagement because you were scared. You tried to be the perfect, kind girl who wanted everyone to be happy, but all you did was hurt the people who loved you.”

The illusionary Leo stepped closer, his form shifting into the exact posture he had assumed when he discarded our past.

”You wanted to save Arthur from his trauma,” Leo said, his voice dripping with absolute scorn.

”But look at him now. He’s drowning in madness, and it’s because you made him depend on a lie. You’re not a savior, Amelia. You’re just a coward who clings to the strongest shoulder because you’re too weak to stand on your own.”

”Stop it...” I whispered, dropping my staff as I pressed my hands tightly over my ears. ”Stop it! I wanted what was best for the family! I wanted—”

”You wanted to feel righteous,” Arthur’s broken form rasped from the dirt, his dead golden eyes staring directly into my soul. ”...And because of your selfishness, everyone fails.”

”It’s all because of you. You are selfish.”

”You should die! You are causing harm to everyone while wearing a kind face. You are a witch.”

”Do you think anyone actually likes you?” another voice hissed from the shadows, twisted and cruel. ”They only keep you around because of your family name. Without that, you’re nothing.”

”You couldn’t save your own friend. You watched him drowning and did nothing. What makes you think you can save anyone else?”

”You’re a coward. You hide behind your kindness because you’re too scared to face the truth.”

”Everyone would be better off if you just disappeared.”

The weight of their combined voices slammed into my mind like a physical hammer.

The ground beneath me began to crack, the beautiful cherry blossom petals rotting into black slime that crawled up my boots, pinning me to the spot.

Despair, heavy and suffocating, wrapped around my throat, squeezing the air from my lungs.

They were right. Every choice I had made had only driven the people I cared about further into ruin. I was just a burden.

A weak, fragile girl playing at nobility.

Maybe... maybe it would be easier to just let go.

To let the fog take the pain away.

My knees buckled. The black slime rose to my waist — cold, thick, and heavy, pulling me down into the stone floor.

My staff had clattered away into the dark, completely out of sight. There was nothing left to see except the weeping faces of my parents, Arthur’s broken body, and the cold, empty eyes of the false Leo.

I was sinking.

The small warmth in my chest began to fade as the cruel voices filled my head. Every word they spoke felt like a heavy chain locking around my wrists, dragging me deeper into the dark mud.

”Just close your eyes,” Leo whispered. He knelt right beside me, his voice almost gentle now. ”It doesn’t have to hurt anymore. Just let go. No one will blame you. No one will even remember.”

My eyelids felt incredibly heavy.

”That’s it,” he said, reaching his hand toward me. ”Just sleep.”

I was about to close them. I was ready to give up.

And then — a spark.

Deep within my soul, buried under layers of doubt and fear, something ignited. It wasn’t a loud explosion. It was a single flicker of crystalline blue light, like a lone candle lighting up a pitch-black room.

But it was enough.

The water spirit’s voice echoed in my mind, soft but perfectly clear, cutting through the heavy fog like a sharp blade.

”You promised.”

I blinked, the darkness in my mind stuttering.

”You promised you would fight.”

The thick slime locking around my legs began to crack.

”You are not alone. I am here. I have always been here.”

A deep warmth flooded my chest. It wasn’t the wild, burning heat of panic, but something steady and calm. It felt like standing in a cool river on a scorching day, the fresh water washing away the dust, the sweat, and the endless pain.

The Spirit Queen’s blessing. It had been inside me the whole time, waiting for me to remember who I was.

I forced my eyes wide open.

The tears were still wet on my cheeks, and the phantom voices were still screaming in the background. The false Leo remained frozen beside me, his hand inches from my shoulder.

But the fear was entirely gone.

”I...”

My voice was weak at first. A faint breath. ”I know I’ve made... mistakes.”

The false Leo’s hand stopped. His perfect smile flickered.

”I know the choices I made caused pain...”

I reached down, driving my hand straight into the black slime. My fingers wrapped around the smooth wood of my staff. It was freezing, but it felt right. Familiar and strong.

”I carry that weight every single day.”

I gripped the wood and pushed myself up, forcing my legs to straighten.

The black slime shattered into pieces. The weeping figures of my parents stumbled back into the shadows, and Arthur’s broken body dissolved into formless mist.

”But I didn’t step into this valley to die in a graveyard of my own regrets!”

Mana — bright, pure, and blinding, exploded from my body in a massive wave. The deep blue light of the water spirit mixed with my own will, tearing through the rotting cherry blossom trees and shattering the walls of the false courtyard.

The false Leo screamed. His body began to tear apart, the purple fog unraveling like loose thread pulled from a sweater.

I raised my staff high, the gemstone at the tip burning like a small sun against the dark sky.

”I am Amelia Nightshade!”

The entire garden broke apart. The cherry blossoms turned to ash, and the false sun vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, black stone walls of the inner sanctum.

”....And I am going to fight!”

The purple fog recoiled, blasting away from me in fear.

For a single second, the entire place went dead silent.
