The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The phrase came from Ysel.

Not from the far eastern sector’s embellished account, which had used the language without attribution. Ysel had said it at the third community at the eastern clan’s table during the second day of the three day stay, in the context of a conversation about what the Full Expression’s deployment had done to the regional supernatural architecture. She had said it as description rather than myth, in the flat analytical register of someone trying to find accurate language for something they had experienced at the field level and were finding that accurate language was insufficient.

”The Blood Apex at Full Expression,” Ysel had said, ”in the proximity amplification chamber’s trigger condition, with the Warden field at anchor proximity, the deployment’s effect on the regional architecture was the effect of something that commands death. Not causes it. Commands it. The specific authority of something that the regional structure’s mortality dimension reports to.”

Reyna had looked at her for a long time.

”The anchor,” Reyna had said finally. ”The anchor’s function includes what you’re describing as the mortality dimension. The regional supernatural structure has a stability component that relates to the continuation of supernatural life within the region. The founding Alphas built the boundary stones to amplify the stability component. The Full Expression’s deployment activated the stability component at its maximum function.” She had paused. ”What you experienced at the field level was the mortality dimension’s stability running at maximum through the boundary stones’ amplification. Every supernatural entity in the region felt the anchor establish itself as the authority over the conditions in which supernatural life continues.”

Ysel had been quiet.

”That’s not commanding death,” Reyna had said.

”It felt like its opposite,” Ysel had said. ”Which is the same thing from a different angle.”

Reyna had not had an immediate answer for that.

She told Axel about the conversation on the third evening at the eastern clan’s holding, sitting in the room they had been given with the specific exhausted quality of someone who had been doing sustained honest work all day and was still running the conversation’s implications at the depth where implications ran for her now.

”She’s right,” Reyna said.

”About the command,” he said.

”About the angle.” She looked at the Blood Mark. ”The anchor’s function at Full Expression, the founding Alphas documented it as the stability of supernatural life within the regional structure. The stability includes what terminates that life. The authority over the conditions includes the authority over when those conditions fail.” She met his eyes. ”I don’t choose what ends and what continues. But the anchor is what the choice is made in the context of. The regional structure’s mortality dimension runs within the anchor’s function the way water runs within a riverbed. The riverbed doesn’t command the water. But the water’s direction is the riverbed’s shape.”

He sat with that.

”The authority of form,” he said.

”Yes.” She looked at the window. ”That’s what Ysel felt at the field level. Not me doing something to death. Death operating within a structure that the Full Expression established as the region’s authoritative form.” She paused. ”I don’t know how to feel about that.”

He looked at her.

”Tell me,” he said.

”I spent a hundred and twelve years being afraid of what I was and what it could do,” she said. ”The Full Expression was supposed to change that and it did, it changed the fear into something more specific and less ambient. But the specific thing it changed the fear into is.....” She stopped. Started again. ”I am the riverbed that death runs in. Within the region. That’s what the anchor means at its full function.” She met his eyes. ”I’m not afraid of that. I understand it and I’m not afraid of it.” She paused. ”I don’t know what to do with it other than hold it.”

”Hold it,” he said.

”Yes,” she said.

”The founding Alphas built it knowing what it was,” he said. ”The specific function. The authority of form. They built it and they documented it and they sealed it in an archive and they went on building the rest of the structure.” He held her gaze. ”They didn’t resolve what to do with it. They held it and kept building.”

She looked at him for a long time.

”Okay,” she said.

She held it.

The story that moved through the region in the months after took Ysel’s description and the far eastern sector’s language and the various accounts of what communities had felt at the field level during the Full Expression’s deployment and compressed them into the phrase that traveled fastest and furthest. She commands death.

It was not accurate.

It was not entirely inaccurate.

Reyna heard it the second time at the seventh community on the route, in the mixed community with wolf and vampire members, where a young vampire who could not have been older than thirty asked her directly: ”The stories say you command death. Do you.”

She had looked at him for a moment.

”No,” she said. ”I hold the structure that death operates within. In this region. That’s not command. That’s form.” She paused. ”Command implies direction. Form implies shape. I don’t direct what ends. I’m the shape within which endings occur.”

The young vampire had thought about that.

”Is that better or worse than command,” he said.

”More accurate,” she said. ”Which is what I have to work with.”

He had nodded. The slow, thinking nod that the young did when they received something more complicated than they had anticipated and were deciding whether to take the complication seriously.

He took it seriously.

The phrase continued to travel regardless.

She commands death. In the version that reached the Halvern Pack’s community through Vale’s network it had become she commands the end of things. In the version that reached the Council’s formal record monitoring it had been softened to she holds authority over the regional mortality framework, which was technically the most accurate and was also the version that nobody was repeating in the rooms that mattered.

Axel read the variations as they arrived through Daren’s monitoring and he thought about what it meant for language to do the work that language did with things it couldn’t fully contain. He thought about what the founding Alphas had written to the people who would eventually need to understand what Reyna was, and about the specific precision of the archaic dialect and whether precision was sufficient for what the anchor meant at its full function or whether the stories’ imprecision was doing something the precision couldn’t.

He thought it was both.

He told her this on the morning after the seventh community.

”The precise documentation says what it is,” he said. ”The stories say what it feels like. Both are true.” He held her gaze. ”You’re the riverbed that the regional mortality dimension flows in. The stories call it command because command is what it feels like to stand in a river that is flowing because of your shape.” He paused. ”The people who felt the Full Expression’s deployment needed a word. Command is not wrong about the experience. It’s wrong about the mechanism.”

She looked at him.

”You’ve been thinking about this,” she said.

”Since Ysel’s conversation,” he said. ”Since you told me about it on the third evening.”

”What did you conclude,” she said.

”That you hold something the region needs to have held,” he said. ”That the holding is what the anchor means and what the command is a name for from the outside. That the founding Alphas understood you would need to hold it and built the Convergence so you could.” He held her gaze steadily. ”And that the holding is what we’re doing. Both of us. Together. The same as everything else.”

She looked at him for a long time.

The deep-water eyes, running at the Full Expression’s depth where everything ran now.

”Together,” she said.

”Yes,” he said.

She held it.

They both did.
