The Alpha's Forbidden Bite

The Full Expression’s deployment completed at dawn.

He felt it the moment it happened not as a dramatic surge or a visible change in the chamber’s light or any of the things that significant supernatural events had produced in his experience of them across twelve weeks. It completed the way the dawn completed, which was by degrees and then all at once and then simply present as a new condition that replaced the previous one without announcement.

The bond at the base level stopped moving.

Not in the reducing direction. Not in the recovering direction. Simply stopped, in the specific quality of something that had reached a point it was going to hold.

He read it.

He read it with the full depth available to him and he read what he found with the same honest, unmanaged attention he brought to everything that mattered.

The base level was holding.

Not recovering not yet, not the warm signal of the Deepening-completed architecture running at its stable frequency. Holding. The irreducible minimum present and stable at the minimum. The depletion’s progression stopped. The Full Expression’s completion having done what Lira said the founding Alphas documented stabilized the architecture from the inside at the level it had reached.

Which was the minimum.

He stayed beside her on the chamber’s floor and he held the Warden field at twenty-six meters and he held his hand on her face and he waited for the minimum to move.

An hour passed.

The minimum held.

It did not move upward. It did not move downward. It held at the irreducible floor with the specific, unnervingly static quality of something that was alive in the most fundamental available sense of alive and was not expressing anything above that sense.

Cael came and went from the doorway. He brought water that Axel didn’t drink and said things in the low Voss Clan dialect to Lira in the corridor that Axel didn’t fully track. He came and crouched beside Axel at one point and put his hand on Reyna’s wrist with the clinical attention of a vampire who was checking the Blood Mark’s condition and the Blood Apex’s presence at the physical level that touch provided rather than the supernatural level that the bond provided.

He said nothing after the check.

He stood up and went back to the doorway.

Axel read that in the King’s silence.

At two hours the minimum was still holding.

He sat beside her in the chamber with the proximity amplification’s accumulated resonance running around them and the Full Expression’s complete deployment present in the architecture and the bond at the minimum and his hand on her face and the Warden field running steady at twenty-six meters, and he thought about what holding at the minimum meant.

The founding Alphas had documented that the depletion below the recovery threshold could be stabilized by the Full Expression’s complete deployment with the Warden field at anchor proximity. They had documented this as a possibility. They had not documented it as a guarantee. They had not documented the stabilization’s duration. They had not documented whether stabilization at the minimum was a transitional state that resolved upward toward recovery or a terminal state that held until it didn’t.

He had read the sections. He had read them twice before the all-vectors engagement and he had read the relevant section a third time in Corran’s vehicle during the northeastern drive.

The founding Alphas had documented the stabilization. They had not documented what came after it.

Either because they didn’t know.

Or because they did know and what they knew was not something they had written down.

He sat with that for the time it required.

Then he held the bond at the minimum and he did what he always did with the things that couldn’t be put down until the situation permitted it, he stopped putting it down elsewhere and he let it be what it was.

She was on the floor of a proximity amplification chamber in Caul’s primary holding at the northeastern edge of the region with the bond at its irreducible minimum and the Full Expression’s complete deployment in the architecture and the Warden field running at twenty-six meters and his hand on her face.

He thought about the front gate.

About a car coming through in the afternoon and a vampire walking into the west reception room and sitting across from him and putting her hands flat on the table in the open posture her father had taught her and saying I prefer directness when the alternative is games that cost more time than they’re worth.

He thought about the war room lamp and the east wing window and the first hunt and the hollow ground and the industrial site’s corridor where she had put down three operatives in four seconds and then come to stand beside him in the night air and breathe.

He thought about the morning in the east wing room when she held his hand in the dark and the morning after the bond’s completion when the light came through the window and about her name at the end of his on a letter to her father.

He thought about all of it and he held the bond at the minimum and he held his hand on her face and he stayed.

At three hours Petra’s voice came through the radio with the operational update that the territory’s boundary lines were holding and the Full Expression’s deployment had registered across every supernatural community in the region that had the sensitivity to read field-level changes at that scale, which was all of them, and the Council had sent a formal acknowledgment to Ashveil’s communication channel at six-forty-two in the morning.

He acknowledged the update in four words and set the radio down.

At four hours the minimum was still holding.

He was aware of the four hours the way he was aware of everything that was not the bond’s minimum present, registered, filed in the part of his processing that was not the part he was using for the thing that required his full attention.

At four hours and twenty-three minutes the minimum changed.

Not dramatically. Nothing in this night had been dramatic in the way that the hollow ground’s anchor stone collapse had been dramatic or the elder stones’ full activation or the bond’s incandescent deployment in the corridor’s compulsion ritual.

It changed the way the dawn had changed. By degrees. The first degree was barely distinguishable from the minimum’s static holding a quality in the signal that was slightly less minimal than the degree before it. He might have missed it if he had not been reading with his full depth.

He did not miss it.

He read it again.

The minimum was moving.

Upward.

By a margin so small that the word margin was generous. By the specific increment of something at the floor of its capacity that has found a direction and is moving in that direction with the resources available, which were not many but were more than zero.

He breathed.

He held the field at twenty-six meters.

He held his hand on her face.

The minimum moved by one more increment.

He looked at Cael in the doorway.

Cael was looking at him. He had been looking at him since the four-hour and twenty-three-minute mark, which meant Cael had felt the change through the Voss bloodline’s specific sensitivity to the Blood Apex’s condition, the familial connection that ran at a different frequency than the bond but was its own kind of continuous read.

He didn’t say anything. He didn’t need to.

Axel looked at the chamber’s walls and the six hundred years of accumulated resonance and the Full Expression’s deployment present in the architecture and he thought about a world without her.

He had been thinking about it since the moment in the east wing room when he had read the sections and understood what forty minutes of unsurvivable depletion without the anchor meant. He had been thinking about it across the northeastern drive and through the perimeter’s twenty three positions and down the holding’s foundation corridor and through the chamber’s door.

He had been thinking about a world without her the way you thought about something that the operational discipline required you to model in order to respond to it, and at the same time the way you thought about something that the part of you below the operational discipline had encountered and was not going to recover from easily.

He thought about the packhouse without her in the library. The east wing room without her at the window. The war room without the flat, precise quality of her intelligence working at the table’s end. The bond at the minimum, which was the closest approximation available to what a world without her would feel like in the architecture that the Convergence had built.

He did not want that world.

The minimum moved by one more increment.
