Chapter 658: Chapter 658: The Broken Chessboard

The evening sun dipped below the jagged mountain peaks, casting long, crimson shadows across the vast reception hall of the newly built Immortal Doctor’s Pavilion. The workers had cleared out for the night, leaving the colossal structure in absolute, echoing silence.

Ethan stood by the massive second-floor balcony, his hands tucked smoothly inside his white robes as he stared out over the glowing lanterns of the commercial district. Although the earlier display of his Primordial Void Body proved he didn’t possess a single shred of fear toward the Alchemical Pavilion’s Peak Golden Core Master, a cold, calculated sense of impatience ran through his veins. He hated being a pawn on a board he didn’t fully control.

Just an hour ago, Elder Driz had privately met with him in the shadows of the pavilion, explicitly breaking down the true, subterranean reasons behind his and Ash’s sudden tactical intervention—and why they had initiated a temporary ceasefire with the local administration.

”You need to understand the structural reality of this mountain, young master,” Driz had whispered, his voice masking the heavy power of a Soaring Realm cultivator. ”Ash and I are deep-cover agents. As infiltrators operating on behalf of the soaring Dragon realm, we cannot afford to openly play our hand or clumsily align ourselves with any local faction. Our survival relies entirely on pretending to be fierce, bickering rivals—impartial, neutral entities who care only for merit and commerce. If the central sect suspects we have a unified faction, our entire network will be systematically liquidated. But in the dark, we manipulate the currents.”

Driz had then exposed the absolute, suffocating crisis currently paralyzing the upper echelons of the frontier.

”Ash has positioned himself remarkably close to the Grand Branch Leader,” Driz had explained, his eyes narrowing. ”And right now, that old commander is completely desperate. He is legally obligated to secure a magnificent, flawless prodigy to send to the Main Sect’s upcoming Recruitment Tournament. If he fails this time, the central council will officially strip him of his command and forcefully retire him in utter disgrace. This tournament is your absolute, direct ticket to bypass the regional limitations and march straight into the Main Sect’s Inner Court. But to pull it off, you must display a level of talent that is completely without peer.”

The internal sabotage, however, went far deeper than Ethan had initially anticipated.

”The rival faction elders—the alchemists and the discipline enforcers—have already calculated their move,” Driz had warned coldly. ”They fully intend to let the Branch Leader’s selection proceed, but they have engineered a disgusting trap. Their own hidden stars will participate, win the local slots, but the moment they arrive at the capital tournament, they will intentionally deliver a thoroughly horrific, humiliating spectacle. They want to prove to the supreme lords that the absolute maximum level of this frontier branch is an absolute, chaotic disaster, thereby ensuring the Branch Leader’s immediate execution while shielding their own assets.”

Ethan slowly tightened his fist inside his sleeve, a dark, dangerous smile curling the corners of his lips as the full picture finally locked into place.

With the complete political blueprint of the frontier branch laid bare before him, Ethan casually released his clenched fist inside his wide white sleeve. Looking at the grand chessboard, he essentially held a golden ticket straight to the central capital of the Heavenly Sword Pavilion. He already possessed the absolute, staggering baseline cultivation required to crush any local competitor; his only true operational directive was to remain exceptionally calculated regarding exactly how frequently and dramatically he displayed his breakthroughs to the public. If he managed his pacing perfectly, his ascent to the absolute summit of the main sect would be mathematically guaranteed.

However, his factional enemies on this mountain were thoroughly desperate, and they would not make his trajectory easy. Any reckless, uncalculated movement could trigger a premature, chaotic consolidation of their forces, meaning he needed to maintain absolute vigilance with every single administrative and martial step he took.

Knock. Knock.

A soft, rhythmically precise knock echoed against the heavy mahogany door frame of his private second-floor balcony chamber.

”Enter,” Ethan commanded smoothly, his deep baritone carrying an absolute, unbothered calm.

The wooden door glided open, and Maeve stepped into the room, her crimson silk uniform rustling softly against the polished floorboards. She stood at a respectful distance, executing a flawless, deeply formal bow before looking up at him with eyes brimming with professional pride.

”Master Ethan,” Maeve reported softly, her voice crisp and clear in the quiet evening air. ”The senior engineers and construction workers have officially been dismissed for the night. The structural framework is entirely complete, and our elite security arrays have successfully been locked down. My sisters and I are fully preparing the administrative timeline for our grand opening exactly one week from today.”

She took a short, disciplined step forward, presenting a glowing spatial storage ring with both hands. ”Furthermore, Cardis and Clare have just returned from the logistics sector. They have successfully acquired every single medicinal herb, high-tier refinement cauldron, and raw material that you specifically detailed on your private procurement list. Everything has been stored in the lower vaults exactly as you requested.”

Ethan nodded slowly, a dark, thoroughly satisfied smile curling the corners of his lips as he took the ring from her palm. The foundation had been laid, the lines had been drawn in blood, and in seven days, the Immortal Doctor’s Pavilion would change the balance of power on this mountain forever.
