Chapter 657: Chapter 657: The Clash of Masters

High above the sea of clouds, within the absolute privacy of the Grand Branch Leader’s supreme audience hall, the atmosphere was entirely devoid of its usual bureaucratic noise. The heavy, ironwood-paneled doors were thoroughly sealed from the inside, locked down by dense isolating arrays that prevented even a single vibration of sound from escaping into the outer palace corridors.

Ash stood casually to the left of the massive ironwood desk, his elegant, flowing master robes perfectly tailored, his face carrying its signature, unbothered smile.

”Grand Branch Leader,” Ash spoke smoothly, breaking the heavy silence with a tone that bordered on playful. ”Are you truly planning to declare an absolute, total war against the Alchemical Pavilion next year? Presenting the rookie’s achievements directly to the supreme imperial council... that is a definitive move to dismantle the old refiner’s entire lineage.”

The Branch Leader didn’t answer immediately. He slowly closed the jade scroll he had been reviewing, placed it down with an intentional, heavy thud, and fixed his piercing eyes onto the merchant.

”Do not play your pathetic administrative games with me, Ash,” said the Branch Leader, his deep baritone rumbling like a distant thunderstorm. ”I am fully aware that you and Driz are actively plotting something beneath my nose. Even though you two format your public appearances to look like bitter, bickering rivals, it is remarkably easy for an old man like me to see through the structural reality. You are working in perfect, synchronized teamwork, and you are both aggressively protecting this outer rookie, Ethan Brightsword. Tell me right now: who exactly is he, and why do you possess such a suffocating interest in his development?”

Ash merely tilted his head, his smile remaining perfectly locked in place as he raised a defensive palm. ”Grand Branch Leader, I am afraid I have absolutely no idea what you are referring to. I am merely a humble logistics manager looking out for a profitable—”

BOOM!

Before Ash could even finish his calculated sentence, the entire physical reality inside the audience hall violently ruptured.

The absolute, terrifying aura of a master deep within the Spiritual Sea Realm exploded outward from the Branch Leader’s massive frame. The sheer, unadulterated gravity of the pressure caused the very air to turn completely solid.

”Do not attempt to act clever in my presence, boy!” the Branch Leader roared, his silver beard flaring as his massive figure instantly blurred across the stone floor. ”It has been far too long since you last practiced your martial foundations. Let me personally witness exactly how much your hidden strength has grown over the decades!”

The Branch Leader’s opening strike was completely, absolutely unstoppable. Moving at a light-speed velocity that regular cultivators couldn’t even perceive, his fist ripped through the air, carrying a deep, terrifyingly profound force that aimed straight for Ash’s chest.

CRACK!

Ash’s eyes instantly narrowed, his playful merchant facade completely evaporating in a single millisecond. Forced into an absolute corner, he was violently obligated to drop his hidden seals and fight with his absolute, unrestricted seriousness. He crossed his forearms just in time, a brilliant, dazzling shield of condensed, pristine qi erupting from his Dantian as he absorbed the titanic impact.

The Branch Leader didn’t hesitate for a single breath. He launched a relentless, fluid barrage of continuous, deep-set strikes, his palms moving like crashing mountain peaks. Yet, his structural control over his own immense power was so utterly exquisite and flawless that despite the world-ending velocity of the exchange, the surrounding wooden walls and delicate paper screens did not suffer a single, solitary scratch. All the kinetic destruction was systematically focused directly into Ash’s vessel.

Ash rapidly spun his body, his boots gliding across the stone as he unleashed his true, hidden cultivation base—an abyssal, overwhelming torrent of power that did not lose in absolute density or momentum against the supreme commander of the frontier branch. He countered each strike with devastating precision, his movements reflecting a master who had long surpassed the local limitations of the mountain.

”You have hidden your true face remarkably well, Ash!” the Branch Leader bellowed, a fierce, competitive grin breaking through his silver beard as their palms collided again, creating a vacuum of pure pressure between them. ”You have hidden yourself so thoroughly! Did you honestly believe you could clumsily deceive my eyes for eternity?! You are still far too young to attempt a high-stakes play like this against me, child!”

CRACK!

With a final, shattering collision of palm against palm, the vacuum of compressed spiritual energy between them violently imploded. The titanic pressure dissipated into nothingness as both men stepped back across the polished stone floor, their robes settling seamlessly around them. Despite the sheer, reality-bending speed of the exchange, not a single sheet of paper on the ironwood desk had been displaced.

Ash smoothly lowered his arms, adjusting the sleeves of his pristine merchant robes with an impeccable, unbothered grace. The blinding aura of his true power slipped back beneath his hidden seals, vanishing as quickly as it had appeared.

”I have not hidden myself in the slightest, Grand Branch Leader,” said Ash, his breathing perfectly steady as he looked directly into the old man’s piercing eyes. ”I am absolutely not a treacherous serpent plotting behind your back. This entire situation is nothing more than a severe structural misunderstanding; I am not attempting to cause you even a single ounce of harm.”

The Branch Leader stood as tall and immovable as a mountain peak, his silver beard slightly rustling as his deep, suffocating gaze narrowed into dangerous slits. He slowly brought his massive hands behind his back, leaning in slightly.

”If that is the absolute truth, then stop your pathetic maneuvering and answer me clearly,” the Branch Leader demanded, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling register that brooked no further deflection. ”Tell me exactly who this brat is, and why you and Driz are going to such extreme, bloody lengths to support his rise.”

Ash let out a soft, low sigh, the professional mask completely melting away to reveal a rare, completely genuine expression of serious intent. He took a single step closer to the massive ironwood desk.

”Come now, old friend... you know my baseline character,” Ash said, his voice dropping to a confidential whisper. ”You know with absolute certainty that I would never orchestrate a single plot to hurt or betray you. I simply possess an unshakeable, profound faith in that boy’s rapid development. I truly believe that he is the exact miracle who is going to finally get us out of this suffocating border prison.”

Ash’s eyes flashed with a dangerous, razor-sharp intensity as he leaned forward. ”Look at the current strategic reality, old man. The local faction elders have completely locked you down; they have systematically blocked your every move, hoarded their prodigies, and cornered your administration for over sixty long years just to see you fall. That is precisely why I am protecting that brat with everything I have. I want to thoroughly dismantle their factions, and I want to completely erase their absolute monopolies from this mountain.”

The Branch Leader remained completely silent for several agonizing seconds, his ancient, analytical mind systematically processing Ash’s raw explanation. A slow, deeply skeptical frown formed behind his silver beard as he looked at the merchant.

”Mmm...” the Branch Leader muttered, a low, knowing grunt escaping his chest. ”A remarkably convenient arrival, Ash. The timing of his miraculous appearance is almost too flawless. Looking at the grand chessboard, it almost seems as if you deliberately brought this terrifying monster into my branch precisely to force his way into the recruitment selection...”
