Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 1110: Chapter 903: Sudden Heavens Collapse and Sinkhole

”Ah! Run quickly!”

A roar came from the foot of the Ice Mountain.

Edna hadn’t had time to turn around when the valley erupted with a thunderous noise, and the place where the small stream flowed suddenly turned into flowing magma.

Perhaps because all the loved ones were around... Even as a catastrophic explosion struck, the nearby unchanging ice mountain suddenly transformed into a volcano erupting with black flames thousands of meters high... Yet Edna still calmly shouted, ”Grab the branches of the Vanda Tree! Leonard, quickly animate this tree and have it bind everyone!”

Leonard swiftly cast a spell; luckily, his Over-magic Specialty is spell quickening. Although not every spell can be paired with this specialty, animating plants, a basic spell for Nature Mages, was certainly feasible.

He even used the last few seconds to cast the Feather Fall Technique on the towering tree binding everyone, just as they plummeted into the ground along with the sinking earth.

Devis and Luca don’t have many spells that allow moving while casting, so they could only try their best to buff their followers amidst the shaking.

Their followers were grateful for their mage’s wise decision — after discovering Edna and Leonard planned to set up camp on a hill, these two mages stopped their followers from continuing to build a campsite by the creek and instead planned to pitch their travel tents next to a treehouse.

The followers who previously thought they were unlucky now were only left with the thought, ’Oh my gosh! Luckily...’

But they were still a bit regretful: the magical glow on their bodies couldn’t compare to the nearby Teraxil Elves. The mages there all had the specialty of instant-casting Beneficial Spells!

Tiger-person Somar turned to see the rapidly descending tree and the constantly collapsing earth and rocks, feeling a bit anxious... Were they going to fall straight into the Underdark?

All Toril people know that the combat power of the Underdark is actually much stronger than those on the surface. He wasn’t sure if he could ensure Devis’s safety in such a dangerous place... His foster father was always the exclusive Knight for the Devise Family, responsible for protecting Devis’s father.

Otherwise, how could a Beastman like him get the opportunity to travel with the successor of a family?

In Quel Senta, no matter whether a City State is large or small, the City Lord’s position is second only to the Deities, and a race like Beastmen, accustomed to betrayal, simply doesn’t have the chance to mingle around the City Lord’s heir.

His trust was earned not only because of his foster father’s high status but also because young Devis would sneak out to play with Somar, who was practicing alone in the forest behind the castle.

Back then, Somar was already a strong warrior, but he couldn’t join the City Lord Guard, even if his foster father had been the captain of that Guard.

Perhaps because Somar never attempted to betray Devis and saved him several times from venturing out recklessly, he could become the deputy captain of Devis’s exclusive Guard as a Beastman... though it was merely a nominal position that required no duties, just always keeping mage company.

But for a Beastman, reaching a high position in human society was quite an achievement, and because of Devis’s favoritism, he had a chance to touch the threshold of the Transcendent... Warriors’ progression is always earned through frenzied combat, and most people fail to advance not because of lack of ability but because their bodies couldn’t endure.

Only by obtaining the best restoration can one persist until the end, and Somar didn’t have many chances to earn outside... In Quel Senta, for Beastmen to earn money, one either had to be Transcendent or a Gladiator.

He naturally gained enough Restorative Potions through Devis’s private support.

Somar looked down into the bottomless pit and then at Devis, whose face was calm as water, though his fingers were tightly gripping his palm... He absolutely couldn’t let his little master die in such a place!

The Tiger-person swung the branch he was hanging from strongly: Even though he didn’t recognize the tree, a branch that could bind a White Dragon certainly wouldn’t be broken by his mere weight!

He still didn’t understand why these odd Elves always eyed him, but Somar knew at least it wasn’t hostility; likely, they were just fur aficionados... He was rescued by his Knight father from a slave trader’s hands in his childhood precisely because he was a furry little cute creature.

Taking advantage of the binding branch swinging him toward the Undead Mage, Somar used his big eyes, filled with yearning, to gaze at the other, indicating with a longing look that he also wanted the full package.

His goal was quickly realized.

Especially the female mages of the Undead, whose beneficial buffs unknowingly enveloped this big cat.

Feeling the various halos on his body were similar to those on other Teraxil Elves, Somar exerted himself again, swinging toward Devis, who had already noticed what he was doing.

The Scroll Mage could only helplessly watch as his Tiger-person friend grabbed the binding branch and, in a few swift movements, pulled him into his embrace... It looked like he planned to use his own body as a cushion for Devis.

Devis knew that there was no use in saying anything at this point. He understood what Somar was worried about: the Teraxil Elf Mages and Leonard were constantly casting Feather Fall Technique on this large tree, but perhaps they were too heavy... After all, there’s also a White Dragon, so their falling speed was still fast.

And Devis actually doubted he could perform a spell to save himself when they finally saw ground... creating a soft cushion under his feet? He really wasn’t sure if he could manage that.

Even though he had many Magic Scrolls in hand, he really didn’t have the Feather Fall Technique.

Being protected, Devis dared not look back at Luca. He couldn’t request Somar, already prepared to sacrifice himself for protection, to guard anyone else.

However, both he and Luca’s attendants managed to absorb some experience from the Tiger People, and were endeavoring to curry favor with the Teraxil Elves.

Unfortunately, it was apparent that only those mages who had completed their tasks would casually offer assistance.

Even those handsome and beautiful attendants of Luca weren’t an exception.

If it weren’t a critical situation, Devise might even laugh... What an unexpected turn of events! In front of the elves, beautiful humans actually lost to the elves’ arch-nemesis, the Beastmen!

”It’s almost time!” Leonard’s voice rang out, ”Everyone, use the Feather Fall Technique! Just aim for the big tree!”

Held by Somar, Devise was finally able to use magic this time... He vowed to diligently learn how to master the Move Casting and Magic Instant Cast, those two Over-magic Specialties!

”Elvia!” Edna’s voice was loud and resolute.

Devise felt a sudden jolt, and then they were almost instantly upside down... the Vanda Tree suddenly turned over.

He watched the white Giant Dragon spreading its wings, striving to fly upward, and for the first time understood why Toril people always worshiped these powerful yet terrifying creatures.

Even though the size of the White Dragon was not large among dragons, when the White Dragon Queen spread her wings and her powerful muscles tensed dramatically to ascend, it was breathtakingly magnificent.

”Bless Elvia with strength and endurance!” The voice of the Teraxil Elven Command also rang out, ”Elvia! Try to fly a bit longer! Let other things fall first before moving on!”

”Eh?” Edna asked in surprise, ”Wasn’t there just an earthquake? Could there still be traps that haven’t been triggered?”

”Plenty.” ’Snow Cloud Peak’ replied somewhat gloomily, ”Some traps require two or even three collisions to activate! Especially those set by mages; they’re slow to trigger and might use poison or anesthetics. Before heading down, we need to blow a strong wind, otherwise, I wouldn’t know what might happen with all those chaotic potions mixed together.”

”Alright...” Edna could only speak helplessly, ”Elvia, please endure a while longer. ’Snow Cloud Peak,’ is another ten minutes possible? The White Dragon’s stamina isn’t great.”

”Ten minutes is absolutely fine.” ’Snow Cloud Peak’ replied decisively, ”Wait! To the left! Quickly blow a gust and disperse that bush!”

Edna reacted swiftly, summoning a whirlwind around the big tree for a lap.

”Watch out, everyone!” ’Snow Cloud Peak’s tone was filled with dissatisfaction, ”Anything falling in large clumps usually contains materials.”

Devise eventually understood what they were talking about... the Teraxil Elves installed numerous traps even they weren’t aware of, in that valley?

What kind of thrilling game are they playing!

Luca’s voice sounded heavily behind him, ”Are Moduken’s guys doomed?”

”Pretty much!” Edna answered succinctly, ”But it’s nothing to do with us.

The Ice Mountain is the only place without any traps; it has no significance to the Teraxil Elves.

The things beneath the ice layer that appear like Frost-ling Flowers are actually a kind of Ice Magic creature, and they are high-level... Teraxil Elves have been taught a lesson by them too.

But you only need to flee from the water’s edge, as those creatures won’t leave the water.

But now it’s hard to say.... The Ice Mountain has turned into a volcano coupled with the earthquake’s source being there as well, their chances of surviving are slim.”

Devise sneered, ”Isn’t there no one who told them not to leave the safety zone! Blinded by desire, if they die, there’s nothing to say.

And besides, who knows if it was something they did that caused the Ice Mountain to suddenly turn into a volcano?

Luca, didn’t you mention earlier that you saw them using some strange objects to blast the ice?”

”Yes.” Luca said heavily, ”I saw them holding Magic Scrolls but didn’t notice what kind they were.”

”Well, they’ve paid the price for whatever it was,” Edna said indifferently, ”Let’s not bother with it now. After all, adventures inherently involve unexpected situations~

Elvia, the time is about right; we can slowly descend now.”
