Chapter 779: Hiding in Plain Sight

Hiding in Plain Sight

”...Not the nobles.”

”Not the servants.”

”Not even the shadows watching from the walls.”

His voice didn’t rise. It didn’t need to. Every word landed exactly where it was meant to.

Mia frowned slightly, her fingers tightening around the fabric of her sleeve. She took a small step forward, hesitant—but unable to stay silent.

”...But that’s impossible.”

Her voice carried confusion, but there was something else beneath it. Concern.

”If you disappear, enemy spies will notice immediately. They’ve been watching too closely for too long.”

For a moment, she stopped. Her eyes moved across his expression as if tracing where doubt could slip through. Maybe there it was - a flicker beneath what seemed solid.

Cassidy gave a small nod, seated at her side, elbows locking across her chest while her face tightened into something focused, ready. Her gaze narrowed, thoughts clicking into place like gears shifting under quiet pressure.

”...Information spreads too fast,” she said quietly. ”One rumor is all it takes. By the time we react, it’s already out of control.”

A small puff of air escaped Nova’s nostrils as she shifted ahead. Not quite a word, more like an edge cutting through quiet. She spoke with less give now.

”...Especially now,” she added. ”Tension is already high. One wrong move, and every opportunist will come crawling out.”

Each sentence made the walls seem closer. Words piled up like bricks in silence.

A tiny movement of his head showed he agreed.

”...Exactly.”

Slowly, he stayed quiet. The silence grew heavier as the message soaked in. A pause stretched while they absorbed what was said.

Then he continued.

”We already know there are eyes watching us.”

Up there, his eyes lingered on the tall walls - like they might peer right past stone and mortar.

”Hidden.”

”Patient.”

”Waiting for any weakness.”

The silence between syllables stretched longer each time. Not rushed. Deliberate.

A shadow crossed Ronan’s face, tension creeping into his jaw when he said it. His voice came through like a held breath breaking.

”...That is true.”

He spoke without hesitation. A hush settled around his words, holding what neither could change.

Silence hung there, just breathing space between thoughts.

Then -

A quiet shift touched Leon’s mouth - less grin, more stillness. Calm sat there. Edge hid beneath. Almost nothing moved.

”...So we don’t give them anything to see.”

Not quite looking straight on, Aria tipped her head a touch. Her gaze tightened, sharp with curiosity instead of doubt. Moving only a little closer, she drew his notice without reaching out.

”...Meaning?”

Back went Leon once more, his motion measured, unhurried.

Relaxed.

Confident.

Ahead of others, as if he’d moved past them without looking back.

”I announce that I’m entering closed-door seclusion.”

Again, the room settled into silence.

Not shocked -

But calculating.

A flicker crossed Sona’s face, her stare tightening the moment understanding hit. Her brows dipped slightly, attention locking in like a reflex. The air around her seemed to still, just for a breath, as pieces fell into place.

”...Seclusion?” she repeated, quieter this time. ”You mean cutting off all contact completely?”

Cynthia stayed quiet at first. Looking at Leon, her gaze moved slowly, turning the thought over like a stone in her hand. A pause stretched before she blinked.

”...That would stop most inquiries,” she said after a moment. ”Anyone who questions it would look like they’re overstepping.”

For a moment she stopped. Then, choosing words slowly, she went on

”But it won’t stop everyone.”

His eyes moved toward her, steady like still water.

”It doesn’t need to,” he replied. ”It only needs to stop enough.”

A hush crept in after those words.

The sort where confusion lifted -

Just thinking.

Leon nodded.

”Yes.”

A quiet moment followed, yet the silence pressed hard. It wasn’t power behind it - just knowing.

He stayed still instead of chasing. Silence settled while they sat there. Thoughts moved slowly through their minds.

”Once it’s announced, no one will question it.”

Fine, his voice held steady - quiet, even - as if stating what needed no proof.

”No one will expect me to appear.”

A beat passed. Across the space his gaze traveled, landing on one face after another - measuring shifts in expression, flickers of uncertainty, moments where breaths held too long. Then silence again.

”No one will look for me.”

A hush settled in, heavier than before. This was not bewilderment... but clarity, inching forward like dawn through fog.

Frowning slightly, Kyra let her words out slow - each one stepping forward only after a pause.

”...You’ll vanish in plain sight.”

A slight curve touched Leon’s mouth, subtle yet certain. It wasn’t loud or bold, merely quiet recognition shaping his expression.

”...Exactly.”

A breath left its mark on the air. The quiet moved like dust between corners.

A flicker of movement - Nova adjusted her stance, arms folding. Her gaze sharpened, a single eyebrow rising while her eyes studied his face closer than before.

”Okay,” she said, a hint of doubt lingering behind her words. Risky... yet neat

Stillness sat heavy on his shoulders. Answering wasn’t required.

But Mia...

She hadn’t relaxed.

Fingers pulled at fabric, just a little. Her gaze stayed on Leon - longer than it should have, longer than anyone else got.

Still, she spoke slowly, eyes narrowed in thought, a pause hanging between each word. Yet someone could always check, her voice dropping near the end. Maybe it wouldn’t stay hidden, she added, almost under breath

Quiet filled the space once more.

She had a point, after all.

A flicker in Leon’s eyes, then stillness. His stare shifted, focused like a blade finding its edge.

First toward Black.

Then Johny.

Enough just stood there. The change by itself had weight.

A jolt ran through them, spine to skull, before a word left his mouth. Posture snapped tight - no signal needed.

”...That’s where they come in.”

A beat.

Understanding hit.

A flicker of smile tugged one side of Black’s mouth, his jaw tensing just enough to notice. He looked ahead, as if the moment had been rehearsed.

Half a second - that’s how long Johny looked his way before locking eyes with Leon again, spine straight, refusing to bend.

A shift in his stance, slight yet certain. There he stood, present without needing to press.

”Commander Black.”

”Vice Commander Johny.”

Out of nowhere, their answers tumbled together - less planned, more reflex. Voices tangled midair, skipping ahead without waiting.

”As you command, my king.”

Still they stood, unmoving - yet something had changed. Quietly. Without warning. Around them, the space grew stiff, like walls holding their breath.

A hush came out of Leon, air slipping soft through his nostrils. Not quite staring - measuring instead - one eye drifting between faces. Stillness hung there, thick like dust after motion.

A hard edge crept into Leon’s voice. It sliced through the air, colder than before.

”You two will stand guard outside my chamber.”

”Personally.”

”No one enters.”

”No exceptions.”

Silence hung between them before each word arrived. Not hurried, but set down - like parts fitting into something already built.

A hush crept over Johny’s face, the corner of his mouth dropping slightly as he pulled himself taller. Not simply an instruction from a guard - this carried weight. Meant to be seen. Understood by whoever happened to look.

A shift passed through Black’s gaze - just a tremor. Not doubt. A knowing. Then stillness.

Forward he moved, just slightly, his words slowing, dropping in volume.

”...Your presence will confirm the illusion.”

A pause followed, short but full. Not hesitation - more like clarity arriving without noise.

Leon nodded once.

”If both of you stand there...”

”...no one will doubt that I’m inside.”

A small puff of air slipped out through Johny’s nostrils, soundless but clear. His mouth twitched at one edge, then held there - tighter now, less hesitation.

He chuckled softly, like the idea was too wild to take seriously. A pause followed before his gaze shifted, landing on Leon.

”And if they are... we’ll make sure it’s the last mistake they make.”
