Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Xu Yun: Why Is There a Hole Here?

In a villa in Jiangcheng, Su Mu accompanied her father in the living room after dinner, watching TV and making small talk.

She came home once a month.

Su Mu was casually scrolling through her phone when she suddenly saw a friend’s post.

She glanced at the profile picture. It seemed to be Ning Qian, the sales associate from Gucci.

The post read, ”Happiness is simple. Good food, a beautiful night view, and the man I like.”

Below it was a nine-photo grid.

Su Mu tapped on it. Besides various seafood dishes and the night view of the River Beach, there was a photo of two people.

However, aside from Ning Qian, the other person’s face wasn’t showing. There was only the back of someone sitting, facing away from the camera to look at the view.

There was no way Su Mu wouldn’t recognize that back. It had to be Xu Yun.

’Hmph. Off eating at a roadside stall again.’

”Mu.”

Su Jianqiang looked at his only daughter, who seemed distracted, and asked, ”How has work been lately?”

”The usual. Same old thing every day.”

Su Mu said, ”My cousin hasn’t even been at the company for a while now.”

”After your divorce, you didn’t want to stay at the family company. You wanted to work at your cousin’s, and I didn’t force you.”

Su Jianqiang continued, ”But it’s been over two years. Shouldn’t you be thinking about your own life?”

”That’s right, Su Mu.”

Her stepmother, Xue Meiqi, a woman in her forties, also chimed in. ”There’s always more work to be done. A woman should still prioritize family. You need to find someone you like while you’re still young.”

”You don’t need to worry about my affairs, Aunt Xue.”

Su Mu smiled meaningfully and said, ”I’m doing just fine on my own right now and don’t want to think about that sort of thing. You should focus more on my little brother. He’s about to graduate from college and come home.

You’ll need to put a lot of effort into grooming him. Otherwise, how will he ever take over Dad’s company?”

’Xue Meiqi was the second woman her father married after her own mother passed away. She’d even given the Su Family a son.’

’From then on, her father had doted on his young son endlessly.’

’Of course, she hadn’t been neglected.’

’Xue Meiqi was so eager to marry her off. Wasn’t it just because she was afraid Su Mu would return to the company and steal her son’s future position?’

’They both knew it perfectly well and despised each other, yet they still had to put on this act in front of her father.’

Xue Meiqi, of course, caught the veiled sarcasm in her tone and wasn’t about to back down.

She immediately feigned embarrassment and a hint of being wronged. ”Su Mu, please don’t misunderstand. I genuinely have your best interests at heart. I have no intention of letting Su Bei take your place. As for your father’s assets, neither I nor Su Bei would touch a single penny.

I just see how your father worries about your happiness all day, and I can’t bear it, so I try to help him talk to you. If you don’t like it, I’ll stop bringing it up.”

”Su Mu.”

Seeing his wife being bullied by his daughter, Su Jianqiang said in displeasure, ”Is that any way to speak to your Aunt Xue? She’s your elder, after all.”

”Dad, I am speaking to her perfectly fine.”

Su Mu said coolly, ”I was just telling Aunt Xue that I’m not interested in your assets, so she can rest easy and not worry.

I’d hate for Aunt Xue to let your assets come between my brother and me.”

”My assets are mine to give to whomever I please! It’s not up to you to decide whether you want them or not.”

Su Jianqiang’s expression soured. ”Right now, I’m talking about the rest of your life! You’re a young woman, not even thirty, and you’re saying you don’t want to get married? How can that be!

Your Aunt Xue has been going out of her way to find suitable candidates for you, and she finally found a young man with good looks, good character, and a good family background.

You’re going to agree to this whether you like it or not!”

”Su Mu, no matter what you think of me, your father always has your best interests at heart, and he has a point. Don’t make him angry.”

Xue Meiqi interjected, ”Whether you like this man or not, why don’t you just meet him first? If it’s a good match, great. If not, we won’t force you.”

”Fine.”

Seeing the look on her father’s face, Su Mu relented. ”Send me his contact info later. I’ll meet him when I have time.”

”You need to take this seriously. Don’t think you can just go through the motions.”

”Dad.”

Su Mu said, her voice also filled with displeasure, ”If you’re going to be like this every time I come home for dinner, then from now on, I’ll only come back once every two months.”

”Old Su, that’s enough. Su Mu has already agreed.”

Xue Meiqi played the peacemaker. ”You two are father and daughter, don’t act like enemies. She’s a grown woman now; she has her own thoughts and her own judgment.”

The mention of this just made Su Jianqiang angrier. ”I trusted her judgment and listened to her ideas back then! I let her marry that social climber, and what happened?

They were divorced in less than three years, and he even managed to swindle a large sum of money from the company.”

”Su Mu was young and naive back then. She’s definitely learned her lesson by now.”

Xue Meiqi said, ”Old Su, if you trust me, you can stop worrying about Su Mu’s marriage. Leave it to me.”

”Fine. I’ll leave this to you from now on.”

Su Jianqiang glanced at his daughter, then abruptly stood up. ”I’m heading upstairs. You two can chat.”

”Su Mu, don’t hold it against your father. That’s just how he is.”

Xue Meiqi said to Su Mu, her expression now warm and friendly, ”When it comes to the major decisions in your life, you’re your own boss. Aunt Xue will run interference for you. But you still have to put on a bit of a show to placate your father.”

’Su Mu looked at the beautiful woman before her. Even in her forties, she was still remarkably elegant. She really has taken good care of herself.’

’No wonder she has my old man completely wrapped around her finger.’

”I know my dad’s temper. I don’t need you to console me, Aunt Xue.”

She smiled. ”Since he’s angry, he probably doesn’t want me around to irritate him. I won’t stay over tonight. I’m heading home. If Dad asks about me later, just cover for me.”

”It’s so late. Why don’t you stay the night?”

Su Mu glanced at the way the woman was already getting up as if to see her out. ”Dad’s not here anymore. You can drop the act. It’s exhausting just watching you.”

With that, she turned and strode coolly out the door.

Xue Meiqi saw her to the door before turning away. The moment she did, her expression turned to ice.

’That Su Mu was a sharp one. No matter how well she played her part over the years, she had never been able to fool her.’

’Fortunately, the girl truly seemed to have no interest in the family company.’

’But just in case, for her own son’s sake, she still had to be wary of her.’

On the way home, Su Mu sat in her BMW, feeling completely unfazed.

’She truly couldn’t care less about the family company. Aunt Xue treating her like an enemy was entirely a product of her own paranoia.’

’In fact, she got along quite well with her half-brother, Su Bei.’

’She had long since planned to let him take over the company. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have gone to work at her cousin’s company in the first place.’

’That move alone was a clear statement of her intentions.’

’But that foolish woman, Xue Meiqi, was completely oblivious.’

’But if she ever really pushed her too far, Su Mu just might fight her for it after all!’

At Su Mu’s house, Xu Yun and Li Jinshu had no idea that she was already on her way back.

They were still in the kitchen, struggling to fix the broken water heater.
