Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The first Company agent entered the room.

Silver roots tightened around the walls, but the agent cut through them with a white blade. The root fell to the floor and turned into ash.

Sarah moved to intercept him.

I raised my hand.

”Wait.”

She looked at me.

The agent lifted his weapon.

”What are you doing?” Sarah asked.

”Talking.”

”To him?”

”To someone else.”

The room blurred.

The Company agent’s mask stretched across my vision until it became a white wall. His voice faded into a distant vibration. The flames outside disappeared. Sarah’s sword became a line of silver light. Dorian’s broken blade froze in the air.

Then everything went dark.

I stood in an empty room.

There was no ceiling.

No walls.

Only a black floor covered in shallow water. Every step created ripples that carried images away from my feet.

I looked down.

The water reflected Kai’s face.

Not mine.

His hair was shorter than I remembered from the memories. His eyes were younger. He looked tired, but not in the way I was tired. My exhaustion came from fighting, dying, and carrying too many decisions.

Kai’s exhaustion came from waiting.

He stood several steps away.

He wore the same torn clothes from the memory beneath the house. His hands were wrapped around the broken wooden bird.

The bird’s wings had been repaired with black thread.

”You took your time,” he said.

His voice was quiet.

I looked around the empty room.

”Where are we?”

”Inside me.”

”That is not an answer.”

”It is the only answer you have ever given me.”

The words struck harder than they should have.

I studied him.

”You are the original Kai.”

”I know.”

”You have been awake since I arrived?”

”Not all the time.”

”When were you awake?”

”When you were afraid.”

The water moved around our feet.

I crossed my arms.

”That happened often.”

”Yes.”

”You watched me take control of your body.”

”I watched you try not to destroy it.”

”That is a generous way to describe what happened.”

Kai looked down at the wooden bird.

”You could have used it better.”

”I was busy surviving.”

”You always say that.”

”Because it is true.”

”Is that why you took my life?”

The room became colder.

I did not answer immediately.

Kai raised his eyes.

”Answer me, Arthur.”

Hearing my name from him felt different from hearing it from the Witness. The Witness had used it like a chain. Kai used it like a question.

”I did not choose your body,” I said.

”But you stayed.”

”I had nowhere else to go.”

”You had my life.”

”I had a body that was dying.”

”You had my face.”

”I know.”

”You had my sister.”

His voice cracked on the last word.

I looked away.

The empty room filled with images.

Mira placing a cloth against his nose.

Mira holding an umbrella above him.

Mira standing in front of the Company agents while he hid behind her.

Mira gripping his hand before the memory broke apart.

”You used her voice,” Kai said.

”I did not pretend to be you.”

”You let her believe you were me.”

”I did not know who you were.”

”You did not ask.”

”I was trying not to die.”

”You were always trying not to die.”

”Yes.”

The answer stopped him.

Kai watched me carefully.

”You are not going to defend yourself?”

”I did what I had to do.”

”That is a defense.”

”No. It is an explanation.”

He stepped closer.

The water rippled between us.

”Do you know what it feels like to watch someone wear your body?”

”Yes.”

His expression changed.

”No, you do not.”

”I know what it feels like to watch someone use your work, your name, and your life as if they belong to them.”

”You are talking about the Company.”

”I am talking about more than the Company.”

The dark room shifted.

The floor beneath us became a white office.

Glass walls rose from the water. Bright lights appeared overhead. A long table formed between us. On the other side sat people in clean suits, their faces hidden behind shadows.

I recognized the room.

The conference chamber before the fall.

My conference chamber.

My colleagues.

My work.

My failure.

Kai stood in the center of it, looking at the empty chairs.

”Were they your family?” he asked.

”No.”

”Your friends?”

”Some of them.”

”Did they know you were going to die?”

”They knew something was wrong.”

”Did they try to save you?”

”I told them not to.”

Kai turned toward me.

”Why?”

”Because I thought I could fix it alone.”

”Could you?”

”No.”

The room filled with the sound of distant alarms.

I saw myself standing in front of the central display, refusing to leave while the system collapsed around me. I saw the white light. The broken glass. The moment I understood that the Company had never been trying to repair the worlds.

They were trying to own them.

Kai watched the memory in silence.

”You were also trapped,” he said.

”I was not trapped in the same way.”

”You were still trapped.”

”I chose to stay.”

”So did I.”

I turned toward him.

”What?”

”I stayed inside because I was afraid.”

The office disappeared.

We returned to the black water.

Kai held the wooden bird close to his chest.

”When they took me, I fought. I screamed. I tried to run. Then they showed me what happened to my father.”

His fingers tightened around the bird.

”They did not kill him in front of me. They showed me a recording. They wanted me to understand what would happen if I resisted.”

I remained silent.

”They told me that if I cooperated, Mira would be safe. They told me I would return home. They told me that I was special.”

”You believed them.”

”I was a child.”

The answer was simple.

It carried more weight than anger.

”They put me into the Tower,” Kai continued. ”They gave me a role. Porter. F-Rank. Disposable. They said I would be useful if I carried things for the people who mattered.”

His eyes lifted.

”Do you know what it is like to be told that your life is valuable only when someone else needs your hands?”

I thought of the first days after awakening in his body.

The hunger.

The injuries.

The way people shouted at him in the Tower.

The way no one looked at his face when they handed him another burden.

”Yes,” I said.

Kai shook his head.

”You understand being used. You do not understand being ignored.”

He was right.

There were differences between us that could not be erased by shared pain.

I had been powerful before the Company took everything from me. Kai had been powerless before anyone bothered to notice him.

”I am sorry,” I said.

Kai looked at me as if the words were unfamiliar.

”For what?”

”For using your body.”

”That is not enough.”

”No.”

”For lying to Mira.”

”Also not enough.”

”For every time I treated your life as a tool because I thought mine mattered more.”

The water became still.

Kai’s grip loosened around the bird.

”You thought yours mattered more?”

”At first.”

”And now?”

”Now I know I was wrong.”

”Because you met Sarah?”

”Because I met all of them.”

He glanced toward the darkness.

Sarah’s voice echoed faintly from outside.

”Kai!”

The sound reached the inner room like a distant bell.

Kai looked toward it.

”She trusts you.”

”She trusts the person she thinks I am.”

”She knows.”

I turned back to him.

”What?”

”She does not know your name. She does not know where you came from. But she knows you are not me.”

”How?”

”Because she knew me before the Tower.”

A painful silence formed between us.

”What was I like?” I asked.

Kai smiled faintly.

”You want to know?”

”Yes.”

”You were annoying.”

”That is not useful.”

”You talked too much when you were nervous.”

”I do not talk too much.”

”You do.”

”People usually complain that I do not talk enough.”

”People who know you now.”

The smile disappeared.

”You were kind,” Kai said. ”Not brave. Not strong. Not clever. But kind.”

I looked at the water.

He continued.

”You gave away your food when people asked. You repaired tools for free. You carried things for older hunters even when they insulted you. You thought if you were useful enough, people would eventually want you around.”

His voice became bitter.

”You were wrong.”

”I know.”

”No, you do not. You were not there when they laughed after you left. You were not there when they said you would never become anything. You were not there when Mira waited for you at the gate until the rain stopped.”

”I saw the memory.”

”A memory is not the same as a life.”

The words cut through me.

I lowered my head.

”You are right.”

Kai took another step closer.

”Do you regret it?”

”What?”

”Being me.”

I looked at him.

He was no longer angry.

That was worse.

”I regret that I had no choice,” I said.

”That is not what I asked.”

I thought of Sarah’s laughter. Kael’s quiet observations. Jax complaining through every disaster. Dorian standing alone against the Witness. Mira looking at me with grief because my face belonged to someone she loved.

I thought of the body beneath my control.

The hands that had once carried burdens through the Tower.

The heart that had continued beating even after hope had been taken from it.

”No,” I said.

Kai waited.

”I do not regret meeting them. I do not regret saving them. I do not regret what I became while living your life.”

”But you regret taking it.”

”Yes.”

He looked away.

The black water began to ripple again.

”Then why are you still here?”

”Because the Company is outside.”

”That is not the reason.”

”Because Mira needs the truth.”

”Not the reason.”

”Because you are not ready.”

Kai’s eyes rose sharply.

”Do not decide that for me.”

”I am not deciding for you. I am telling you what I see.”

”You have been looking through my eyes for weeks. You think that means you know me?”

”No.”

”Then stop talking like you do.”

”I know you are afraid.”

His face tightened.

”So are you.”

”Yes.”

”Then why do you keep moving?”

”Because fear is not a reason to stop.”

”That is what people say when they have no choice.”

”Sometimes having no choice is still enough.”

Kai looked at the broken bird.

”Will you leave when the world is free?”

The question had been waiting between us since the first moment he appeared.

I did not pretend not to understand it.

”Yes.”

His face became pale.

”Where will you go?”

”I do not know.”

”Will you take my body?”

”No.”

”Will you disappear?”

”I hope not.”

”Will I remember you?”

”I do not know.”

”Will they?”

I thought of the Tower. The way it erased people. The way it turned lives into roles and names into marks.

”I will make sure they do.”

Kai laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

”You cannot control what people remember.”

”I know how to leave evidence.”

”That sounds like something an engineer would say.”

”I was an engineer.”

”You were a man who believed everything could be repaired.”

”I still do.”

”Can you repair me?”

The question stopped me.

Kai stared at me with the frightened eyes of the child from the memory.

”Can you return everything they took?”

”No.”

”Can you make Mira forget she waited for me?”

”No.”

”Can you give my father back?”

”No.”

”Can you make me the person I was before they took me?”

I forced myself to answer honestly.

”No.”

Kai lowered his head.

”Then what can you repair?”

”The future.”

He remained silent.

”The past is gone,” I continued. ”I cannot return your father. I cannot erase the years you spent in the Tower. I cannot make Mira forget the pain. But I can stop the Company from doing this to someone else.”

”And if you fail?”

”Then I try again.”

”You mean you die and return.”

I looked at him.

Kai had known.

”You saw?”

”I felt the emptiness after each death.”

”How many?”

”Enough.”

His expression changed from anger to grief.

”You died in my body.”

”Yes.”

”You were alone.”

”Yes.”

”Did anyone know?”

”No.”

Kai closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked like a child again.

”I am sorry.”

The words moved through me more painfully than any weapon.

”You do not have to be.”

”I know what it means to be alone inside a body people are using.”

I looked at him.

He opened his eyes.

”Every time you died, I thought maybe you were gone. Every time you returned, I thought maybe I would disappear.”

”You did not.”

”Not completely.”

”Why?”

”Because you kept leaving pieces of yourself behind.”

The room filled with images.

A memory of Sarah’s laugh.

Kael teaching me how to read a Tower map.

Jax handing me half of a stolen meal.

Dorian placing the cracked mask in my hands.

Mira touching my face as if trying to find her brother beneath it.

Each image became a small light in the darkness.

Kai looked at them.

”You filled the empty spaces with them.”

”I did not mean to.”

”No one does.”

The black water began to rise.

Outside, the Company agents struck the door again.

The inner room shook.

Sarah shouted.

”Kai! We are running out of time!”

Kai looked toward the sound.

”Your friends are waiting.”

”They are your friends too.”

”No.”

”You are inside the same body.”

”That does not make them mine.”

”They will mourn you when you leave.”

Kai looked at me.

”Will you tell them?”

”Tell them what?”

”That I was here.”

”I will.”

”Not everything.”

”Why not?”

”Because some things belong to me.”

I nodded.

He stepped closer until we stood face to face.

”If I help you now, will you give me my body back?”

”When the world is free.”

”You swear?”

”I swear.”

”And if the Tower tries to keep you here?”

”I will leave.”

”And if the next world needs you?”

”I will find another way.”

Kai studied me.

”You are lying.”

”I am not.”

”You always choose the hardest way.”

”That is not the same as lying.”

”It means you will leave even if you want to stay.”

I had no answer.

He placed the broken wooden bird between us.

”Then do not call yourself my brother.”

”I never did.”

”Do not call yourself my replacement.”

”I never wanted to be.”

”Do not call yourself my savior.”

”I am not.”

Kai’s fingers closed around the bird.

”Then what are you?”

I looked at him.

”Someone who borrowed your life and owes you a future.”

The room went quiet.

Kai’s eyes filled with tears, but he did not let them fall.

”That is the first honest thing you have said.”

”I have said many honest things.”

”You hide the important ones.”

”So do you.”

”Maybe.”

The floor trembled harder.

The black water reached our ankles.

The white door of the inner room appeared in the distance.

Beyond it, the Company waited.

Kai turned toward the door.

”How do we fight them?”

”Together.”

”I do not know how.”

”Neither do I.”

”Then what good are you?”

”I know how to steal roles.”

”And I know this body.”

”I need your memories.”

”You need my permission.”

I looked at him.

”Can you give it?”

Kai held out his hand.

A thin black thread connected his palm to mine.

”Not forever.”

”I know.”

”Not because I forgive you.”

”I know.”

”Not because I want you to keep being me.”

”I know.”

”Then why?”

Kai looked toward the white door.

”Because I want to see what happens when someone finally refuses them.”

I took his hand.

The instant our palms touched, the inner room exploded with light.

Memories rushed through me.

Kai’s childhood.

Mira’s voice.

His father’s final embrace.

The Company’s cold rooms.

The Tower’s first floor.

The loneliness of carrying burdens for people who never learned his name.

At the same time, my memories poured into him.

The office.

The Company.

The collapse.

The deaths.

The faces of the people I had failed.

Our memories collided, then settled into one body without becoming one person.

Two hearts.

Two histories.

One pair of eyes.

Kai stepped back.

He was no longer wearing the torn clothes of his childhood. He wore the simple uniform of an F-Rank Porter, but his posture had changed.

He looked like himself.

Not the weak version people remembered.

The real one.

”You are terrible at using my left hand,” he said.

I flexed my fingers.

”I have had limited practice.”

”You fight like someone who expects the body to break.”

”It usually does.”

”Stop doing that.”

”Can you prevent it?”

”I can tell you when you are about to make a stupid decision.”

”That happens frequently.”

”I noticed.”

The white door began to crack.

Outside, the Company agent shouted.

”Vessel synchronization detected. Begin forced separation.”

Kai’s face hardened.

”They are trying to pull me out.”

”No.”

I looked toward the door.

”They are trying to pull both of us apart.”

”What happens if they succeed?”

”Your soul may return to the Tower.”

”And yours?”

”I may be destroyed.”

Kai took a breath.

”Then do not let them.”

I smiled faintly.

”That was the plan.”

He stepped beside me.

”Arthur.”

”Yes?”

”When you leave this body...”

”I know.”

”No. Listen.”

I turned toward him.

”When you leave, do not make it sound like you are dying.”

The request surprised me.

”Why?”

”Because I have already lost enough people.”

The white door cracked again.

Kai continued.

”If you leave, leave like someone who has somewhere to go.”

I looked at the darkness behind him.

”I will.”

”And if you find another world?”

”I will remember this one.”

”Remember me.”

”I will.”

”Not as a vessel.”

”Never.”

”Not as a role.”

”Never.”

Kai looked at the broken bird in his hand.

”Then remember me as the person who let you borrow his life.”

I placed my hand over his shoulder.

”Remember me as the person who gave it back.”

The door shattered.

White light flooded the inner room.

The Company agents rushed through.

The inner world began to collapse around us.

Kai turned toward me.

”Ready?”

”No.”

He smiled faintly.

”Good.”

We stepped through the broken door together.

The real room returned in a single violent moment.

The Company agent’s blade was inches from my throat.

Sarah was fighting two soldiers near the wall. Kael and Jax guarded the stairway. Dorian stood between Neri and another agent, blood running from his reopened wound.

The weapon moved.

I caught it with my bare hand.

The blade cut through my palm, but it did not reach my throat.

The agent stared at me.

”Impossible.”

Kai’s voice spoke inside my mind.

”Your thumb is too low.”

I adjusted my grip.

The weapon locked.

”Like this?”

”Now twist.”

I twisted.

The Company agent’s arm broke at the elbow.

He dropped the blade.

I struck his chest and sent him crashing through the wall.

Sarah looked at me.

”Are you all right?”

I looked at the broken wall.

Kai answered inside me.

”Tell her no.”

I lifted the fallen weapon.

”No.”

Sarah grinned.

”Finally, an honest answer.”

The remaining Company agents turned toward us.

Dorian raised his broken blade.

Neri’s hook gleamed beneath the white light.

The house shook as Mira’s defenses closed around the settlement.

Inside my mind, Kai stood beside me.

He was afraid.

So was I.

But this time, neither of us was alone.

The final confrontation began.
