Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The passage closed behind us.

Not with a door. With pressure.

The red walls leaned inward until the last sound of the collapsing chamber disappeared. For a few seconds, I could hear nothing except my own breathing and Dorian’s weak pulse beneath my fingers.

He was still over my shoulder.

His weight was heavier than it should have been. Not because he was large, but because every step forced me to carry more than his body. His blood. His broken mask. His exposed name. The memory of the field. The woman. The child.

Dorian Vale.

The name refused to leave my head.

The passage curved downward.

A narrow stream of red light ran along the floor, illuminating symbols carved into the stone. Some resembled letters. Others looked like small doors. A few had been scratched out so violently that the rock around them had broken.

Behind us, the Witness spoke from the other side of the sealed passage.

”Conclusion pending.”

The words were quiet.

That made them worse.

Dorian stirred over my shoulder.

”Did it follow?” he asked.

”Not yet.”

”That is not an answer.”

”It is the only one I have.”

”Then you are improving.”

His voice was weak, but the sarcasm remained.

I adjusted my grip beneath his legs.

”You lost a lot of blood.”

”I noticed.”

”You also lost something else.”

He went silent.

I kept walking.

The passage descended another level. My boots slipped against the smooth floor, and Dorian’s hand tightened around my shoulder.

”Do not say the name,” he said.

”I wasn’t going to.”

”You were thinking it.”

”That is not the same.”

”In the Red Court, it is.”

The red light above us flickered.

The stone whispered.

Dorian.

I stopped.

The sound had not come from Dorian.

It had come from the walls.

Dorian’s arm tightened around my neck.

”Do not answer.”

”I know.”

”Do you?”

The wall whispered again.

Dorian Vale.

The passage changed.

A line opened across the stone ahead of us. It began at the floor and rose toward the ceiling, forming the shape of a door.

No handle appeared.

No lock.

Only a name carved into the center.

DORIAN VALE.

The letters were not painted red.

They were made from something darker.

Something that absorbed the light around them.

Dorian’s breath became shallow.

”Put me down.”

”No.”

”Put me down.”

”You can barely stand.”

”I did not ask whether I could stand.”

The door opened before I could answer.

A cold wind poured through it.

The passage on the other side was not red.

It was green.

Tall grass moved beneath a gray sky. A wooden house stood in the middle of a field. Smoke rose from the chimney. Somewhere nearby, a woman was laughing.

Dorian’s body went rigid.

I knew that laugh.

I had heard it inside the Witness.

”Close it,” he said.

”How?”

”Use your authority.”

”My authority is limited.”

”Then use something else.”

The field beyond the door stretched endlessly. A little boy ran through the grass, carrying a wooden bird. He stopped when he saw us.

He looked directly at Dorian.

”Father?”

Dorian flinched.

I had seen him fight the Witness without fear. I had seen him pull a living sentence apart with his bare hands.

That single word did more damage than the black surface ever had.

The boy took a step closer.

”Father, why did you leave?”

Dorian pushed himself off my shoulder.

His boots hit the red floor, and he almost fell. I caught his arm.

”Don’t,” I said.

He pulled away from me.

”You don’t know what you are talking about.”

”I know that door is bait.”

”It is not bait.”

The woman appeared behind the boy.

She wore a gray dress, and a scar crossed the back of her hand.

Dorian stared at her.

She smiled.

”You took too long.”

His fingers trembled.

I stepped between him and the doorway.

The woman’s smile disappeared.

”You are not part of this story.”

”No,” I said. ”I am usually very good at causing problems in stories that are not mine.”

The boy looked at me.

”Who are you?”

”Someone carrying your father.”

Dorian grabbed the back of my coat.

”Move.”

”No.”

The field changed.

The grass became black.

The sky turned red.

The woman’s face cracked like dry clay. The boy’s wooden bird melted in his hands.

The Witness was using the memory as a mouth.

Dorian saw it too.

His expression hardened.

”Good,” he said.

I looked at him.

”What?”

”You saw the trick.”

”I was the one standing in front of it.”

”Then you have learned something.”

The boy opened his mouth.

A black arm extended from behind him.

The fingers were made of paper.

The woman began to speak, but her voice came from the Witness.

”Role: Father.”

Dorian raised his broken knife.

”Rejected.”

The black arm crossed the field.

Dorian stepped into the doorway and struck it with the broken blade.

The field shuddered.

A white line appeared across the sky.

The boy screamed.

Dorian’s hand shook, but he did not retreat.

”Role: Husband.”

”Rejected.”

The woman broke apart into strips of paper.

”Role: Farmer.”

”Rejected.”

The house caught fire.

”Role: Dorian Vale.”

Dorian drove the broken blade through the center of the doorway.

”Rejected.”

The door did not close.

Instead, the field collapsed inward.

The green grass became red dust. The wooden house became a wall of stone. The boy became a statue with a blank face.

Dorian stared at it.

His breath left him.

The Witness had not shown him his family.

It had shown him the shape of his loss.

The statue raised its hand.

A crack appeared across its chest.

Dorian touched the stone face.

The statue whispered.

”You left us.”

He closed his eyes.

”Yes.”

The statue tilted its head.

”Why?”

Dorian’s hand remained against its face.

”Because staying would have made me one of them.”

”Who?”

”The ones who decide when a life is finished.”

The statue’s chest split open.

A black thread stretched from its heart toward Dorian.

The thread struck his palm.

Dorian did not pull away.

I stepped forward.

”What are you doing?”

”Answering.”

The thread tightened.

Dorian’s face twisted with pain.

The statue continued.

”You could have stayed.”

”I know.”

”You could have protected us.”

”I know.”

”You could have died with us.”

”I know.”

The Witness pushed through the open doorway. Its black surface filled the field, the walls, and the sky.

Its voice came from behind me.

”Guilt accepted as ownership.”

Dorian turned toward it.

”No.”

”Guilt establishes attachment.”

”Attachment is not ownership.”

”Attachment creates obligation.”

”Obligation is not a role.”

”Role determines action.”

Dorian pulled the thread from the statue’s heart.

The statue shattered.

He wrapped the thread around his hand.

”Action determines role.”

The Witness moved closer.

”Incorrect.”

Dorian looked at the black surface.

”You are a witness. You do not understand the difference.”

The Witness struck.

Its arm crossed the field and slammed into Dorian’s chest.

He flew backward into me.

We hit the red floor together.

The door collapsed.

The passage returned.

The red symbols on the walls flashed and began to move. The dark letters of Dorian’s name crawled away from the stone like insects.

Dorian rolled onto his side.

”Can you stand?” I asked.

”No.”

”Can you fight?”

”Yes.”

”Then stand.”

”That is not how injuries work.”

”Then crawl.”

He laughed once, but the laugh turned into a cough. Blood touched his lips.

The Witness entered the passage behind us.

Its surface was no longer smooth. The crack Dorian had created ran from the top of its body to the bottom. Every few seconds, the crack opened and revealed a white hallway on the other side.

The thing was damaged.

It was also angry.

The corridor narrowed around it.

The Witness extended one arm.

I grabbed Dorian beneath the shoulder and pulled him toward the lower end of the passage.

He tried to push me away.

”Leave me.”

”No.”

”You cannot carry me and fight.”

”I am not planning to fight.”

”That is worse.”

We moved through the passage as the black arm struck behind us. The stone exploded. Red fragments flew past my head.

A second arm emerged from the wall ahead.

I stopped.

Dorian looked left.

The Witness blocked the way behind us.

The new arm blocked the way ahead.

We were trapped.

The arm ahead opened its fingers.

Inside its palm was a small red door.

Dorian saw it.

His voice became quiet.

”That is the way out.”

”Of course it is.”

”You have to open it.”

”Why me?”

”Because it is not my door.”

The small door in the palm began to open.

Beyond it, I saw the Tower.

Not the underground city.

The upper platform where Sarah, Kael, and Jax had been waiting.

They stood around a campfire, but their bodies were frozen. Sarah’s hand was reaching for her sword. Jax was halfway through turning toward the sound behind him. Kael’s mouth was open as if he had just shouted.

The door showed me a way back.

It also showed me the moment I had left them.

The Witness spoke behind us.

”Return to assigned location.”

The air thickened.

My body started moving toward the palm.

Not by choice.

The red Court had found another rule to force onto me.

Kai belongs with the Tower.

Arthur belongs beneath it.

The black thread around my chest tightened.

Dorian reached for me.

His hand closed around my wrist.

”Do not go.”

”I am not choosing.”

”Then choose harder.”

The palm-door opened wider.

I could see Sarah clearly now.

Her eyes were closed.

She was dreaming of the Red Court.

She was dreaming of me.

Her lips moved.

Kai.

The Court pulled again.

My feet left the ground.

Dorian wrapped both arms around me and held on.

The force dragged both of us toward the door.

His wounds opened. Blood ran down his coat.

”Let go,” I said.

”No.”

”You will die.”

”I have already died.”

”That is not an answer.”

”It is the only one I have.”

The Witness came closer.

Its reflection filled the black corridor.

In the reflection, I stood alone.

Dorian was gone.

Neri was gone.

Sarah, Kael, and Jax were gone.

Only Arthur remained.

The reflection spoke.

”You cannot carry every identity.”

I stared at it.

The words were true.

That was why they hurt.

I could not be Arthur and Kai without paying for the fracture between them. I could not carry Neri’s name without carrying his memories. I could not protect Dorian without becoming part of his unfinished story.

The Court wanted me to choose one thing and surrender the rest.

It was offering a simple answer.

Simple answers had ruined enough lives.

I reached toward the small door in the palm.

Dorian’s grip tightened.

”What are you doing?”

”Borrowing the exit.”

”That is not a phrase.”

”It is now.”

I placed my hand against the palm-door.

The red Court immediately recognized me.

The door opened.

The force pulling me forward stopped.

For one second, the entire corridor froze.

The Witness stood behind us.

Dorian held my wrist.

The door waited beneath my hand.

I felt the identities inside me.

Kai’s fear.

Arthur’s anger.

Neri’s stolen memory.

Dorian’s unfinished name.

Instead of choosing one, I pushed all of them into the door.

Not as an offering.

As a refusal.

The door shook.

The Witness screamed.

The sound damaged the corridor. Cracks exploded through the walls. The red symbols vanished one after another.

The palm holding the door began to burn.

The Witness lunged.

Dorian released my wrist and stepped into its path.

His broken mask rose in his hand.

”Go.”

”No.”

”Kai.”

The way he said my name stopped me.

Not Arthur.

Kai.

The name he had chosen to use even when he knew what was hidden beneath it.

”You are not the only one allowed to decide who you are,” he said.

The Witness struck him.

Dorian placed the broken mask against its arm.

White light exploded between them.

I stepped through the red door.

The last thing I saw was Dorian standing alone in the corridor, one hand on the Witness’s arm and the other holding the mask against its cracked surface.

The last thing I heard was his voice.

”Remember this.”

The door slammed shut.

I fell onto stone.

The Tower’s upper platform surrounded me.

Sarah, Kael, and Jax were still frozen, exactly as I had seen them. Red dust covered their clothes. Their eyes were closed, but their chests moved.

I rose quickly.

Dorian was not beside me.

The door in the air vanished.

A single red mark remained on my palm.

A door.

Then Sarah opened her eyes.

”Kai?”

I looked toward her.

She crossed the distance between us in three steps and struck my chest with both hands.

The impact barely hurt.

”What were you thinking?” she demanded. ”You disappeared beneath the palace, the entire platform started shaking, and then you fall out of the air looking like you fought a war.”

”I did.”

”With who?”

I glanced at my palm.

The red door mark had already begun to fade.

”Dorian.”

Sarah’s expression changed.

”Where is he?”

I looked back at the empty space beside me.

”I don’t know.”

Jax approached, holding his sword with both hands.

”Is the creepy masked man dead?”

”No.”

”You sound very sure.”

”I am not.”

Kael crouched near my feet and examined the red dust.

”Something came back with you.”

I looked down.

A small black fragment rested beside my boot.

It looked like a piece of Dorian’s mask.

A single white line crossed it in the shape of a door.

The Tower’s system appeared above us.

New Condition Recorded.

The Witness has marked the party.

The Red Court remains open.

A role has been assigned to the missing element.

Dorian Vale: The Man Who Refused His Ending.

Sarah read the message aloud.

”Missing element?”

Jax looked at me.

”What does that mean?”

I closed my hand around the broken piece of mask.

”It means he is still alive.”

Kael stared at the empty air.

”Then why is he not here?”

Before I could answer, a bell rang beneath the Tower.

The sound traveled through the stone and into my chest.

A new line appeared beneath the message.

Return to the Red Court before the seventh bell.

Failure: The missing element will be written into the Tower.

Sarah read the words.

Then she looked at me.

”You are going back.”

It was not a question.

I looked toward the edge of the platform. Far above us, the Tower disappeared into darkness. Far below us, beneath the stone and the broken palace, Dorian was still facing the Witness alone.

Neri was still trapped in the Red Court.

The Witness still knew my name.

And somewhere inside the Tower, a new role was being written for me.

”Yes,” I said.

Sarah grabbed my arm.

”Then we are coming with you.”

”No.”

Jax lifted his sword.

”That was a terrible answer.”

Kael stood beside him.

”You do not get to disappear alone twice.”

I looked at the three of them.

For a moment, I wanted to tell them the truth.

That the Red Court could use their names against them.

That the Witness had already marked the party.

That Dorian had stayed behind because someone needed to keep the door open.

Instead, I said the only thing I could.

”Stay close. Do not answer any voice that calls you.”

Sarah drew her sword.

”Then lead the way, Kai.”

Another bell rang.

The seventh bell was coming.

Beneath the Tower, Dorian’s unfinished story waited in the dark.

And this time, I was not going back to escape.

I was going back to bring him out.
