Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The first Company agent stepped through the burning doorway.

Rain hissed against his white mask. Smoke curled around his shoulders, but the flames did not touch him. They crawled along the walls of the eastern house as if they had been ordered to wait.

Mira stood in front of us with her sword raised.

”House Veyr,” she said, ”remember.”

The silver trees embroidered across the banners ignited.

A deep sound moved through the floor.

It was not a bell. It was the sound of a lock turning after twelve years of rust.

The walls trembled.

The Company agent tilted his head.

”Old defensive structure detected.”

Another agent stepped through the smoke behind him. This one carried a long white spear covered in thin black lines. A symbol had been carved into the center of his mask.

The Company mark.

”House Veyr is ordered to surrender the vessel,” he said. ”All resistance will be classified as obstruction.”

Mira smiled without warmth.

”You came into my home and called my brother a vessel.”

The agent raised his spear.

”Your brother is no longer legally recognized as a person.”

Mira moved.

Her sword struck the spear before he finished speaking. The impact shattered the doorway and sent a wave of force through the room. The Company agent slid backward across the wet floor, his boots carving two deep lines into the wooden boards.

Sarah joined Mira without hesitation.

Their blades crossed the agent from opposite sides.

He blocked Sarah’s strike with the spear and caught Mira’s sword beneath the shaft. For a moment, all three weapons locked together.

The agent’s mask turned toward me.

”Kai,” he said. ”Step away from the rebels.”

My hand tightened around the short blade at my waist.

”I have known them for less than an hour.”

Mira glanced at me.

”That is not what you sound like.”

”I am still deciding whether I like you.”

”Decide faster.”

The agent twisted his spear.

Sarah and Mira were thrown apart.

The spear released a thin wave of white light. It crossed the room at chest height, cutting through furniture and walls. I ducked beneath it. Dorian pulled Neri backward while Kael grabbed Jax by the collar and dragged him toward the side hall.

The wave struck the portrait of Kai.

The canvas split down the middle.

The metal plate hidden behind it fell to the floor.

The moment it touched the wood, the house screamed.

Every window shattered at once.

The fire outside rose into the shape of enormous silver branches. They spread across the front of the house, forming the outline of a tree with roots buried beneath the settlement.

The Company agents stopped.

The first agent turned toward the burning tree.

”Defensive structure is active.”

The second agent raised his spear.

”Terminate the structure.”

Mira wiped blood from the corner of her mouth.

”You can try.”

The floor opened beneath the agents.

Silver roots erupted from the boards and wrapped around their legs. One agent cut through the roots immediately. Another was dragged to the ground as the roots climbed over his armor.

The third agent entered through the broken window and fired a bolt of white light at Mira.

I moved before thinking.

My hand rose.

Architect Authority responded with a sharp pressure behind my eyes.

The bolt stopped in the air.

Not completely. It continued pushing forward, trembling inches from my palm.

The room blurred around me.

I could feel the shape of the attack. It was not a spell. It was a command forced into matter. Continue forward. Pierce target. Ignore resistance.

I pressed my fingers together.

The command bent.

The bolt turned toward the ceiling and exploded through the roof.

Everyone in the room looked at me.

The pressure vanished from my skull, leaving pain behind.

Mira stared at my hand.

”Kai never did that.”

”I am having a difficult day.”

”You have been having a difficult day for years,” she said. ”That is not an answer.”

The third agent raised another bolt.

Sarah cut him across the chest.

The white light shattered against her armor, but the impact sent her crashing into the wall.

”Kai!” she shouted.

”I am here.”

”Then stop talking and help!”

I moved toward the agent.

His armor opened along the ribs, revealing layers of white metal beneath the cloth. He swung his weapon at my neck. I leaned away from the blade and struck his wrist.

The impact should have broken his bones.

It did not.

His armor absorbed the blow and redirected the force into the floor.

A crack split the room between us.

”Company equipment,” Kael said from the side hall. ”Do not fight it directly.”

”I noticed.”

The agent attacked again.

This time, I did not meet the weapon. I stepped inside its range, caught the shaft beneath my arm, and pulled him off balance. His mask came close enough for me to see my reflection in it.

Kai’s face looked back at me.

The agent drove his forehead into mine.

Pain flashed across my skull.

I staggered.

He twisted the spear and struck my ribs.

The impact lifted me from the floor and threw me across the room.

I landed beside the broken portrait.

For a moment, I could not breathe.

The house shook around me.

Through the torn canvas, I saw the image of young Kai again.

He stood beside Mira, holding the wooden bird.

His face had been scratched away, but his hand remained visible.

The fingers were wrapped around a small metal key.

I knew that key.

I had seen it in the memory beneath the steel door.

Kai had held it before entering the Tower.

A hidden passage opened under the portrait.

The Company agent noticed the movement.

”Protect the archive.”

He abandoned me and rushed toward the opening.

Mira turned sharply.

”No.”

She blocked him, but the agent’s spear struck her shoulder and drove her to one knee.

The opening beneath the portrait widened.

Inside was a narrow staircase leading downward.

A cold draft rose from the darkness.

The first memory was below us.

The Company agents knew it too.

I pushed myself up.

Dorian reached me first.

”You are bleeding.”

”I have had worse.”

”You say that too often.”

”Then stop giving me reasons to repeat it.”

Dorian looked toward the stairway.

”The memory is below.”

”And the agents are going after it.”

”Then we should move.”

Neri appeared beside him, hook ready.

”I will stay here.”

I looked at him.

”Why?”

His eyes remained on the agents.

”Because they know what I am.”

”So do we.”

”No. You know what happened to me. They know what I was made for.”

A Company agent tore free from the silver roots and entered the room. The white lines on his armor glowed brighter.

Neri’s black mark pulsed.

The agent pointed at him.

”Unregistered Witness. Submit for recovery.”

Neri’s face became empty.

The words had found something inside him.

I stepped between them.

”He is not going anywhere.”

The agent raised his weapon.

Dorian moved first.

His broken blade struck the agent’s mask and carved a thin line across it. The agent stumbled. Neri followed, driving his hook into the exposed joint beneath the shoulder.

The armor released a burst of white light.

Both of them were thrown backward.

Neri landed hard against the wall.

Dorian rolled across the floor and came to a stop beside the stairway.

The agent rose.

His mask was damaged, but his voice remained calm.

”Defective elements are incapable of cooperation.”

Dorian spat blood onto the floor.

”Then you are going to be very disappointed.”

Mira stood again, one hand pressed to her injured shoulder.

She looked at the soldiers filling her home.

Then she looked at the silver roots spreading beneath the floor.

”Everyone,” she said, ”go downstairs.”

Sarah turned toward her.

”What about you?”

”This house belongs to my family.”

The largest roots erupted from the center of the room. They wrapped around the walls, the ceiling, and the remaining Company agents.

Mira placed her palm against the wooden floor.

The symbol of the broken circle appeared beneath her hand.

The entire house began to change.

The rooms stretched.

The hallways folded over themselves.

Doors appeared where walls had stood. Windows moved to different sides of the building. The Company agents shouted as the structure separated them from one another.

Mira looked at me.

”You want the truth about Kai?”

”Yes.”

”Then find the room beneath the first room.”

”What does that mean?”

”It means you have been asking the wrong house.”

She pushed her palm into the floor.

The staircase opened wider.

A pulse of silver light swept through the room.

The Company agents disappeared behind walls as the house rearranged itself.

Sarah grabbed my arm.

”Move.”

We descended.

Kael went first with Jax behind him. Sarah followed. I came next with Dorian and Neri.

The staircase was narrow and damp. The sounds of battle faded above us, replaced by the steady pulse of the house.

Each beat shook dust from the ceiling.

Jax looked back.

”Is Mira going to survive?”

Dorian answered before I could.

”She has survived twelve years without her brother.”

”That was not my question.”

”It was the answer.”

The stairs ended at a stone corridor.

Symbols covered the walls. Some were identical to the marks in the Lower Archive. Others had been painted over with silver ink.

At the end of the corridor stood a black door.

No handle.

No lock.

A single sentence had been carved into it.

Only the owner may enter.

I stepped toward it.

The red mark on my palm opened.

A voice whispered from the other side.

”Kai.”

I froze.

It was not the voice of the Witness.

It was younger.

Afraid.

It was Kai’s voice.

The voice spoke again.

”Are you still there?”

My chest tightened.

I placed my hand against the door.

”I am.”

The words left my mouth before I could stop them.

The door opened.

Sarah caught my shoulder.

”You answered.”

”I know.”

The corridor behind us darkened.

The stone walls sealed the way back.

Dorian looked at me.

”You just gave the house permission to recognize you.”

”Then we should hope it recognizes me correctly.”

We entered the room.

It was small.

There was a wooden bed, a broken chair, and a narrow window showing a sky that did not belong to the surface settlement.

The room looked like a child’s bedroom abandoned in the middle of the night.

A wooden bird rested on the bed.

Its wings were broken.

A small metal key lay beside it.

The first memory waited in the walls.

I knew it before it appeared.

A young Kai sat on the floor beside the bed. His face was swollen from crying. Mira knelt in front of him, holding a wet cloth against his nose.

”Do not go with them,” she said.

”I have to.”

”They said you will be safe.”

”They said they need me.”

Mira’s eyes filled with anger.

”They need what is inside you.”

Kai looked at the key in his hand.

”What is inside me?”

Mira glanced toward the door.

”The thing our father tried to hide.”

”Is it dangerous?”

”Only to people who want to control it.”

The memory shifted.

A man stood in the doorway. He was older than Mira and carried the same silver tree symbol on his coat.

Their father.

His face was pale.

Behind him waited two Company agents.

”Kai,” he said, ”you must come.”

Kai stood slowly.

Mira caught his hand.

The father looked at her.

”Let him go.”

”No.”

”Mira.”

”You promised they would not take him.”

The man’s expression broke.

”I promised I would try to protect him.”

”You failed.”

The agents entered the room.

Kai moved in front of Mira.

”I am not going.”

One agent raised his hand.

The room filled with white light.

Kai screamed.

The memory shook violently.

The wooden bird on the bed split in half.

A dark shape emerged from Kai’s chest.

It looked like a shadow, but it had no edges. It pushed against the white light, resisting it.

The agents stepped back.

”Anti-role response confirmed,” one of them said.

”Begin extraction.”

Mira pulled Kai toward the hidden staircase.

”Run!”

Kai stumbled after her.

The father grabbed Mira’s arm.

”I will hold them.”

She stared at him.

”You will die.”

”I know.”

”Why?”

The man looked at Kai.

”Because a father should be allowed to fail once for the right reason.”

Mira released him.

She and Kai ran down the stairs.

The memory followed them into the underground room.

Kai held the metal key in both hands.

Mira knelt in front of him.

”If they catch you, forget this place.”

”I will come back.”

”You may not remember me.”

”I will remember.”

”What if they take your memories?”

Kai pressed the key against his chest.

”Then I will remember you with something else.”

The dark shape inside him moved.

It entered the key.

The metal turned black.

Mira’s eyes widened.

”What did you do?”

”I gave it a promise.”

The room shook.

A door opened beneath the floor.

A force dragged Kai backward.

Mira reached for him.

He grabbed her hand.

”Do not let them make me forget!”

”I will not!”

The memory shattered.

I returned to the room with my hand still against the black door.

The metal key on the bed had disappeared.

The wooden bird remained.

A crack ran through its body.

Mira’s voice came through the walls.

”Kai?”

I turned toward the door.

”You saw it,” she said.

”Yes.”

”Then you know what happened.”

”I know they took him.”

”No.”

Her voice trembled for the first time.

”They took his memories. They took his body. But they did not take him.”

I looked at the broken wooden bird.

”What do you mean?”

”He has been awake inside you since the day you arrived.”

The room went silent.

Sarah looked at me.

Dorian closed his eyes.

Neri touched the mark over his heart.

Jax spoke quietly.

”Kai is still inside?”

Mira answered through the wall.

”He has been watching.”

My breathing slowed.

A second presence stirred beneath my thoughts.

Not the copy from the Archive.

Not Arthur’s memory.

Something frightened and familiar.

A boy holding a broken bird.

A voice whispered inside my chest.

You took too long.

I closed my eyes.

”Kai?”

The presence answered.

You used my face badly.

Jax stared at me.

”What happened?”

I opened my eyes.

For the first time, I understood why my body had always resisted me.

Why the Tower had called me a thief.

Why Company had wanted the vessel returned.

Why the final separation would hurt more than death.

Kai was not waiting to be erased.

He was waiting to come home.

A violent impact shook the corridor.

The black door cracked.

Mira shouted from the other side.

”They broke through!”

Company agents began forcing their way into the underground room.

Sarah raised her sword.

Kael pulled Jax behind him.

Dorian drew his broken blade.

Neri lifted his hook.

The voice inside my chest whispered again.

Let me help.

I placed my hand over my heart.

”Not yet.”

The door split open.

White masks appeared through the cracks.

The first agent stepped into the room.

”Recover the vessel.”

I stood between him and the broken wooden bird.

My palm burned.

The room answered.

Silver roots burst from the walls.

The agent raised his weapon.

I looked at him through the reflection of his mask.

”You should have left my family alone.”

He tilted his head.

”Your family is irrelevant.”

A cold pressure gathered behind my eyes.

Not the full force of Architect Authority.

Something smaller.

Something that belonged to Kai.

The darkness inside my chest pushed forward.

The room became still.

The agent’s weapon stopped in the air.

A thin black line ran from his mask to the floor.

I reached toward it.

Not to destroy him.

To steal the role he had brought into the house.

The line snapped.

The agent’s mask cracked.

He fell to one knee.

The system appeared above us.

Anti-role resistance awakened.

Temporary cooperation detected.

Vessel status: contested.

I felt Kai standing beside my thoughts.

For one second, we looked through the same eyes.

He was afraid.

So was I.

But neither of us moved away.

Sarah raised her sword.

”Ready?”

I tightened my grip on the blade.

”No.”

Dorian smiled faintly.

”That is usually when you are most dangerous.”

The Company agents entered the room.

The silver roots tightened around the walls.

The wooden bird on the bed opened its broken wings.

And for the first time since I had entered the Tower, Kai and I fought as two people inside one body.
