Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The girl smiled.

”Come home, little brother.”

Kai went still.

The violet city opened its eyes behind her.

Not metaphorically.

The buildings along the horizon lit up one after another, and every window became a watching eye. The streets curved toward us like veins. The white towers leaned forward, listening.

Mira moved closer to Kai.

”Do you know her?”

Kai did not answer.

The girl held the wooden bird against her chest. The black crown in her other hand began to glow with a faint red light.

Aster stepped in front of us.

”Stay where you are.”

The girl tilted her head.

”You always say that when you are frightened.”

”I am not frightened.”

”You are still lying.”

Aster raised his blade.

The girl looked at it.

”You cannot cut a promise.”

The blade trembled in his hand.

Vaelora moved beside me.

”What is her name?” I asked.

The girl answered for herself.

”Liora.”

Kai whispered the name.

Liora.

His voice changed when he said it.

Not recognition.

Pain.

The violet city responded to the sound. The roads beneath our feet turned pale, and small flowers appeared between the cracks. They were white at first, then gradually darkened until their petals became the color of blood.

Liora stepped through the open doorway.

The world behind her did not remain still.

The city moved with her.

Every road turned toward Kai.

Every eye in every building followed us.

Liora stopped several steps away.

”You took a long time.”

Kai looked at her.

”Who are you?”

She smiled sadly.

”You really do not remember.”

”I remember the Tower. The first world. The city. I remember closing the door.”

”You remember what they allowed you to remember.”

”I asked who you are.”

”I am your sister.”

The word moved through the road.

Mira’s fingers tightened around her blade.

Kai’s face lost all color.

”I do not have a sister.”

”You did.”

”Who?”

Liora looked at me.

”Ask Elias.”

Every eye in the city turned toward me.

I felt Vaelora’s hand close around my wrist.

Not restraining me.

Warning me.

Kai looked at me too.

”What does she mean?”

I tried to speak.

The first memory rose before I could stop it.

A white room.

A woman singing.

A child crying.

Two small beds placed beneath a window.

Kai lying in one.

A girl standing beside the other.

Liora.

She was older by a few years. Her hair was black, her eyes bright, and her hands were covered in ink.

She held the wooden bird.

Kai reached for it.

”You can have it,” she told him.

”Forever?”

”Until you stop being afraid.”

”I am always afraid.”

”Then I will stay.”

The memory broke.

I returned to the road with my breath trapped in my chest.

Kai was watching me.

”You knew.”

”I remembered her.”

”That is not an answer.”

”No.”

”What happened to her?”

Liora answered.

”You left me.”

Kai flinched.

”I was taken.”

”You still left.”

”I was a child.”

”So was I.”

Mira stepped between them.

”You said he was taken by the first world.”

Liora looked at her.

”He was taken from the first world.”

”That is different.”

”Yes.”

”Then tell us what happened.”

Liora’s eyes moved toward the violet city.

”The first world was not built for two children. It was built for memories that had nowhere else to go. When the system began collapsing, Elias came for Kai.”

I looked at her.

”Why was he taken?”

”Because the first world had chosen him.”

”For what?”

”To become its heart.”

Kai looked at his hands.

”I was a child.”

”You were the only child who could carry the passage without losing his body.”

Aster’s voice was quiet.

”And Liora?”

”She was the anchor.”

”What does that mean?” Mira asked.

Liora lifted the wooden bird.

”She was meant to remain in the first world and keep Kai connected to it.”

Kai looked at her.

”You were holding me there?”

”I was keeping you alive.”

”You were the reason I could not leave.”

”I was the reason you survived.”

The road trembled.

Kai took one step toward her.

”Then why did Elias take me?”

Liora’s gaze returned to me.

”Because he believed freedom mattered more than survival.”

Vaelora looked at me.

”You promised to return him.”

”I know.”

”No,” Liora said. ”You promised to return him when he was free.”

The distinction hung between us.

Kai looked at me.

”Was I free when you took me?”

”No.”

”Did you know that?”

”Yes.”

”Then why did you take me?”

The answer came from a memory.

I was holding Kai in the white room. He was unconscious, his skin covered in silver lines. Liora stood beside the door, crying silently.

Vaelora was behind me.

”If you take him now,” she said, ”the system will erase his connection to this world.”

”If I leave him, he dies.”

”If you take him, she may die.”

I looked at Liora.

She shook her head.

”Take him.”

I turned toward her.

”I cannot leave you.”

”You are not leaving me.”

”I do not know how to bring you both.”

”Then bring him first.”

The memory ended.

I looked at Liora.

”You told me to take him.”

”I told you to take him because you promised to return.”

”I tried.”

”You forgot.”

”I was forced to forget.”

”You chose to forget.”

The words struck harder than the accusation.

Vaelora stepped forward.

”We both chose to carry the memory.”

Liora looked at her.

”You stayed in Lyradis.”

”I remained to keep the second world alive.”

”You remained because you were afraid to follow him.”

Vaelora’s expression did not change.

”That may be true.”

The admission silenced the road.

Liora looked at me again.

”You returned as Arthur.”

”I did.”

”And you remembered nothing.”

”No.”

”You built a Tower.”

”Not the first one.”

”You helped continue it.”

”I did.”

”And you want me to believe you were still the person who promised to return?”

I did not answer.

Kai was staring at Liora.

”What happened after I left?”

Liora’s grip tightened around the wooden bird.

”The first world collapsed around me.”

”Did you survive?”

”You see me.”

”That is not what I asked.”

”I survived in the way promises survive.”

”That is not a life.”

”No.”

The city’s windows flickered.

Behind Liora, figures began appearing in the streets. Some looked human. Others were made of light and flowers. A few wore the faces of people from our memories.

One looked like the woman who had raised Kai.

Another looked like the child version of Mira.

A third wore my face.

The city was building itself from our regrets.

Dorian stared at the figures.

”The world is manifesting emotional records.”

Liora glanced at him.

”It manifests what people refuse to say.”

”Then why does it have your face everywhere?”

”Because it was built around me.”

Aster looked at the city.

”You made yourself its center.”

”I was made its center.”

”By whom?”

Liora looked toward the black crown in her hand.

”By the first world.”

The crown rose slightly.

It was not a crown of authority.

It was a crown of roots.

Thin black lines extended from it into the city, connecting every tower and street to Liora’s hand.

Kai saw them.

”You are controlling them.”

”I am holding them together.”

”That is what Vaelora said.”

Liora looked toward Vaelora.

”Vaelora holds people because she is afraid they will leave. I hold the city because it will disappear if I let go.”

”Then let go,” Kai said.

Liora’s expression broke.

”Do you think I have not tried?”

The violet sky darkened.

The buildings began to crumble at their edges.

Flowers turned to ash.

Roads split apart.

People in the city cried out.

Liora’s crown flashed.

The collapse stopped.

She looked at Kai.

”Every time I release the crown, someone vanishes.”

Kai’s voice softened.

”Then we find another way.”

”You already said that once.”

”When?”

”Before you left.”

The memory formed around us.

Kai and Liora stood in the first world beside a white gate. Kai was holding the wooden bird. Liora had the crown on her head, though it was smaller then.

”We can open the passage,” Kai said.

Liora shook her head.

”If it opens, the city will lose its shape.”

”Then we rebuild it.”

”With what?”

”The memories.”

”They are not enough.”

”I can carry them.”

”You will die.”

”Then you carry me.”

Liora looked at him.

”What if you never return?”

”I will.”

”Promise?”

”I promise.”

The memory faded.

Kai lowered his head.

”I did promise.”

”You promised everyone,” Liora said.

”I know.”

”You promised Mira.”

”I know.”

”You promised Vaelora.”

”I know.”

”You promised Elias.”

Kai looked at me.

”What did I promise you?”

The answer came from my own memory.

A small room beneath the first world.

Kai stood before me, holding the wooden bird.

”If I forget, remind me.”

”Remind you of what?”

”That I chose to leave.”

”Why?”

”Because if you carry me away, I might believe you stole me.”

I closed my eyes.

”You told me to remind you that freedom was your choice.”

Kai looked at Liora.

”I chose to leave.”

”You chose to survive,” she said.

”I chose both.”

The road brightened beneath him.

The city reacted.

The black roots connected to Liora’s crown began loosening.

She gasped.

Kai took another step.

”You do not have to hold this world alone.”

”If I let go, it falls.”

”Then let us hold it together.”

”Who is us?”

Kai looked at Mira.

She stepped beside him.

”Those who came back.”

He looked at Aster.

Aster lowered his blade.

”Those who remained.”

Then Kai looked at me.

”Those who forgot and remembered again.”

Finally, he looked at Liora.

”And those who were left behind.”

Liora shook her head.

”You cannot promise that.”

”I am not promising.”

”Then what are you doing?”

”Choosing.”

The fifth bell rang.

The sound moved through the violet city.

The black crown cracked.

Liora cried out as the roots pulled away from her body.

The city began collapsing.

Kai reached for her.

She stepped back.

”If you touch me, the city will attach itself to you.”

”I know.”

”Then you will become its heart.”

”I am not a vessel.”

”No.”

Kai extended his hand.

”You said that once.”

The roots surged toward him.

Mira grabbed his shoulder.

”Do not let it take you.”

”I am not letting it take me.”

”Then what are you doing?”

”Giving it somewhere else to go.”

I understood.

The Architect Authority opened.

No command appeared.

Only the old question.

**WHAT CAN HOLD A WORLD WITHOUT OWNING IT?**

I looked at the people beside me.

Not one person.

Not one body.

Not one ruler.

A network of choices.

I reached for the Authority.

Kai placed his hand over mine.

Mira joined us.

Aster placed his palm against the road.

Vaelora stepped forward and touched Liora’s crown.

Liora stared at her.

”You know what this will do.”

”Yes.”

”If you release the roots, you will lose the city.”

”If I keep them, the city will never belong to anyone else.”

Liora’s eyes filled with tears.

”You are asking me to let go.”

”I am asking you to stop being the only one holding on.”

Vaelora turned toward me.

”I cannot do it alone.”

”I know.”

”Then do not make me.”

The fifth position appeared between us.

**DESIRE: SHARED.**

The roots separated.

They did not vanish.

They moved into the roads, the buildings, and the people.

The city stopped collapsing.

Liora fell forward.

Kai caught her.

For a moment, she rested against him like a child.

Then she pushed away.

”Do not think this makes us family again.”

Kai nodded.

”I will not.”

”Do not think I forgive you.”

”I will not.”

”Do not think I want to follow you.”

”I will not.”

Liora looked toward the open road leading deeper into the violet city.

”But I will show you where the first promise is kept.”

Aster’s face changed.

”The original promise?”

Liora looked at me.

”The promise Elias made before he became Arthur.”

I felt Vaelora’s fingers slip from mine.

Not completely.

Just enough to remind me that she was not ready to stand beside me without fear.

Liora turned away.

”Come.”

The violet city opened a path.

The buildings moved aside.

At the end of the road stood a house made from white stone and black wood.

It looked like the unfinished house.

But this one was complete.

Smoke rose from its chimney.

A small wooden bird hung above the door.

Kai stopped.

”That is where we lived.”

”No,” Liora said.

”That is where we promised.”

The door opened by itself.

Inside, someone was waiting.

A woman in a white coat.

The first mother.

But she was not alone.

Beside her stood a younger version of Elias.

My younger self.

He was holding a sealed memory in both hands.

Liora looked at me.

”The first promise is not a sentence.”

The house darkened.

”It is a person.”

My younger self raised his head.

His eyes met mine.

Then he said:

”You promised to bring me back.”
