Reborn with a Space: Building a Fortune Amidst Famine

Chapter 65: 65 buy cylinder

Su Yuanyuan also crouched down, checked inside and out, and finally selected what she needed and set it aside. After paying, she packed them into the basket. ”Uncle, can I leave this basket here with you while I go look around and buy other things?”

”Sure, go ahead. I’ll watch it for you. It won’t get lost.”

Su Yuanyuan headed straight to the stall selling large sieves. The vendor was sharp-eyed, ”Little girl, what do you want to buy?”

”Uncle, I’ll buy two more sieves.”

”My sieves are of good quality, aren’t they?”

”Yes, they’re quite good. Is the price still the same as last time—five yuan for one large and one small?”

”Alright, I’ll sell them to you.”

”Uncle, how much is this basket each?”

”Two yuan each, one and a half for the small one.”

”Uncle, I want one large and two small ones, can you give me a fair price?”

”You can give me four and a half yuan.”

”Four yuan.”

”Really can’t do it, girl. There’s no profit in this basket. The basket itself isn’t worth much, but the base is specially bought and really expensive.”

”Alright, four yuan and two cents.”

The vendor gritted his teeth, ”Alright, I’ll sell them to you. Is there anything else you need?”

”Uncle, how much are these rice baskets?” They look quite delicate, probably made by someone quite skillful.

They can hold steamed buns, flatbreads, dumplings, etc. If the price is right, I’d buy several.

”The lowest is one yuan each.”

”That’s too expensive. How about this, uncle, four yuan for five? Is that okay?”

Today, I’ve come to the market alone, so I can buy some small things I like.

”Okay, I’ll sell them to you. Pick them yourself, they’re all made by my dad.”

Su Yuanyuan paid and noticed that she had too many things and not enough baskets at home, so she decided to buy another large basket. She could carry one on the back and hang one on the front.

The large basket costs three and a half. Everything was packed into it.

”Uncle, I’ll leave them here again. I’ll look around some more and come back to carry them.”

”Sure, go ahead. Be careful.”

Su Yuanyuan nodded with a smile, having discovered something.

Su Yuanyuan arrived at Old Yang’s stall, ”Uncle Yang, you came to the market today?”

”Yes, did you buy anything?”

”Bought quite a few useful things. I left them at the selling place, and I’ll pick them up on my way back.”

”Uncle, in a few days, I’ll bring you some green prawns from the county. These past few days, the prawns in my traps have grown considerably.”

”Alright, take care.”

The two chatted for a bit before continuing their shopping. Buying a bolt of fabric because you never know if you’ll be able to buy it in the future.

After wandering around and finding nothing particularly needed, it’s better to head home, as the stuff accumulated already is considerable.

Carrying the basket, she stopped by the stall selling plates and bowls, purchasing three large jars, intending to pickle cucumbers and salted duck eggs.

This certainly drew quite a bit of attention. A young girl carrying a huge basket reaching her knees with another hanging in front.

Su Yuanyuan squeezed through the crowd and let out a breath of relief—there were so many people at this market. Better head home quickly.

As she walked, she put the plates and jars into the space, leaving only one jar in front.

This felt much lighter, given the long journey ahead.

She passed by fellow villagers, but no one acknowledged her, and she didn’t speak to them either. Pretending not to know strangers was fine.

Back home, it was already past eleven. Three pigs were oinking, and she hurried to take care of them.

The pigs ate more and more, so another bucket of pig food was added. She planned to ask Yang Hongwen when he would go into town as she needed to buy large vats to store food grains, otherwise, she’d have to deal with rodents.

After feeding the chickens, she went to fetch the sheep as well. The water used to clean the pig food vat and bucket was just enough for the sheep to drink.

After organizing her purchases, she planned to find Yang Hongwen around mealtime; otherwise, she might miss him.

”Girl, come in and have a bite?” Xu Chunjiao pulled Su Yuanyuan by the hand, leading her in.

”Aunt, I’m skipping it. I want to ask my uncle when he will be free, as I plan to buy some large jars. It’s better to prepare them while idle, so there’s a place to store grain when harvested.”

Yang Hongwen was eating when he heard Su Yuanyuan outside, he put down his chopsticks and came out.

”I’ll be heading there this afternoon. Come along and have a look.”

Su Yuanyuan nodded, ”Uncle, I’ll go home, tidy up, and come over to find you.”

After lunch, rather than going to the Yang Family immediately, she knew they’d need a rest after lunch.

The two were on an ox cart, it was too sunny. But there wasn’t anyone to be seen.

”Uncle, how many large vats can the cart carry? I have two acres of corn crops, and a few vats won’t be enough.”

”It can carry five or six, no problem. You should buy six; too many would take too much space and draw attention.”

”Uncle, I want to buy several hundred jin of wheat.”

”Alright, how much do you want?”

”How much wheat can one large vat hold?”

”A large one can hold five hundred jin.”

”Then I’ll buy five hundred jin to fill one vat. How much per jin?”

”Fourteen cents a jin.”

”I’ll take five hundred jin too. The pigs I’m raising now are already over one hundred and fifty jin and should reach over two hundred jin by winter. I’ll surely profit this year.”

”Sure, I’ll deliver my harvested wheat to you; you can pay me when you have the money.”

Su Yuanyuan smiled and nodded. The village chief was indeed kind, as she was worrying about asking to owe the money first.

It’s been over half a year since she traveled here and she’s collected quite a lot of things. Fortunately, with her bad reputation, no one visited her home; otherwise, someone might covet her belongings.

Arriving at the town, they purchased six large vats and two small ones from this supplier. They also bought nine lids, made of cement, each costing two yuan, totaling sixty-six yuan, saving one lid’s price.

Yang Hongwen knew this girl earned money from selling fish in the winter, so he wasn’t surprised.

Back at the village, it was nearly four o’clock. Yang Hongwen drove the cart to send Su Yuanyuan home.

Three large vats were placed in her living room, and the remaining four large and two small ones were stored in the west room, making it fully packed.

Su Yuanyuan felt she’d sufficiently prepared for the harvest; she just needed to bring the grain home.

In the evening, Yang Hongwen and three others delivered the wheat and helped her put it into the vat. Five hundred jin cost seventy yuan.

”Uncle, I’ll pay you back when I sell the pigs.” She felt embarrassed.

”No problem.”

Having grain in hand, her heart was at ease. Su Yuanyuan finally understood this feeling.

Now there was nothing she was anxious to accomplish, so she started arranging the soil blocks, hoping to enclose her yard by winter. Though the ambition was grand, reality was harsh. She’d only saved three hundred yuan for soil blocks, far from enough. Perhaps it was better to spend money buying soil blocks.
