Reality overload

The chateau grounds felt softer than during the day. The forest alive with sounds of Animals waking up.

It felt quieter.

Katherine stepped out beside me, her cloak brushing the stone path. She didn’t look like a noble now...no fine dress, no armor, no ceremonial posture. but she carried herself with the kind of calm authority you don’t forget once you’ve seen it.

”This place is peaceful at night,” she said. ”Solaire’s palace never was.”

I glanced at her. ”Really?”

She nodded, eyes drifting over the the winding path.

”Solaire was... louder. Brighter. Always awake. Even at midnight, the palace halls were full of advisors, nobles, petitioners. I used to sneak out just to get a moment of peace.”

I smiled. ”You? Sneaking?”

She smirked. ”I was young then. A queen yes, but I could sneak if I wanted.”

We passed a small fountain, its water shimmering under moonlight. A couple of guards nodded respectfully to Katherine, not because she was their queen, but because she carried herself like someone important.

Katherine noticed my glance.

”They don’t bow because they know my former office,” she said. ”They bow because they respect common courtesy.”

I laughed softly. ”You do have that vibe.”

She nudged me gently. ”And you’re getting it.”

I smirked. ”It would seem I have no choice in the matter...”

”You don’t get to choose,” she said. ”People see your kindness. They see your similarities to them. They see how you protected them. That’s enough.”

We walked a little farther, the night settling around us like a blanket.

Katherine slowed her pace.

”You know,” she said, ”Solaire’s nights were full of politics. Meetings. Arguments. Diplomacy. I never had walks like this. Not with anyone.”

I looked at her. ”Do you miss it?”

She breathed out slowly.

”I miss parts of Solaire. The people. The warmth. The festivals. But the crown?” She shook her head. ”No. I don’t miss that.”

We reached the river overlook, the water reflecting the moon like a sheet of silver.

Katherine leaned against the railing.

”I wasn’t meant to be a queen,” she said. ”But I can help you become whatever Hilguard needs.”

I swallowed. ”I don’t know what that is yet.”

She smiled soft, and steady.

”You don’t have to know yet. Tonight, we walk. Tomorrow, we will learn.”

The river whispered below us, lanterns flickering back the night. The path ahead of us breathed peacefully.

”Katherine,” I said quietly, ”why did you leave the palace?”

She didn’t answer at first.

She just breathed...slow, steady...like she’d been waiting for me to ask.

Finally, she spoke.

”Because the crown stopped feeling like a duty,” she said softly. ”And started feeling like a cage.”

I swallowed. ”A cage?”

She nodded, eyes still on the river.

”Solaire was beautiful. Warm. Alive. But its politics were... relentless. Every day was a negotiation. Every night was a battle of words. Every decision had ten consequences.”

Her voice softened.

”And I was eighteen. Too young to know how heavy a crown really is.”

I stayed quiet, letting her speak, my thoughts however planted on how I was the same age she had been, kept rolling around my mind.

”I loved my people,” she said. ”I loved my kingdom. But I didn’t love the throne. And one day... I realized I loved someone else more.”

I turned to her. ”Someone?”

She smiled wistfully.

”Yes. Someone. A man with no title. No land. No noble blood. Just a kind heart and a stubborn streak that matched mine, you never met him. But you brought his memory home for me.”

Her fingers brushed the railing.

”I tried to be the queen they needed. I tried to ignore how I felt. But every day I wore that crown, I felt like I was lying. To myself. To him. To Solaire.”

She finally looked at me.

”I didn’t leave because I didn’t care. I left because I cared too much.”

My chest tightened.

”Katherine...”

She shook her head gently.

”My sister took the throne. She was ready. Strong, and capable. But I still felt like I abandoned her. Abandoned all of them.”

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

”That’s why I don’t flaunt my title. Why I don’t correct people when they call me captain or lady or anything else. I don’t feel like I earned the right to be a queen anymore.”

I swallowed hard.

”You didn’t abandon them,” I said.

She smiled...sad, soft, grateful.

”Maybe not. But it felt like it.”

The river shimmered below us. The burbling of it soothing to hear.

Katherine turned back to the water.

”And that,” she said, ”is why I left...”

”Zora,” she said softly, ”there’s something you need to understand about leadership.”

I swallowed. ”Okay...”

She turned toward me fully, leaning her hip against the railing, cloak brushing the stone.

”Leadership isn’t about crowns,” she said. ”Or titles. Or ceremonies. It’s about conviction.”

Her voice was calm, but there was an edge beneath it, the kind that comes from experience, not theory.

”People will look to you,” she continued. ”Not because you asked them to. Not because you want them to. But because you’re powerful. Because you’re kind. Because you’re visible.”

I looked down. ”I don’t want them to.”

She nodded. ”Neither did I.”

The wind shifted, cool against my cheeks.

Katherine’s eyes softened.

”Here’s the truth no one tells you,” she said. ”Leadership costs you things.”

I met her gaze.

”What kind of things?”

She exhaled slowly.

”Time. Privacy. Certainty. The ability to make mistakes quietly. The freedom to walk through a city without someone watching you. The luxury of being selfish.”

Her voice dropped lower.

”And sometimes... it costs you pieces of yourself.”

My chest tightened.

”Katherine...”

She held up a hand gently.

”I’m not saying this to scare you,” she said. ”I’m saying it because you deserve honesty. You deserve to know what you’re stepping toward.”

I swallowed hard.

”I didn’t choose any of this.”

”No,” she said. ”But leadership rarely cares about choice.”

She stepped closer, her tone softening.

”You have magic. You have compassion. You have a spine that shows up even when you’re terrified. People see that. They follow that. They trust that.”

I looked away.

Katherine touched my arm.

”But here’s the part that matters,” she said. ”Leadership doesn’t just take. It gives.”

I blinked. ”Gives?”

She nodded.

”It gives you purpose. It gives you connection. It gives you the chance to protect people who need protecting. It gives you the ability to change things that are broken.”

Her voice warmed.

”And it gives you moments like this...quiet, honest, human moments, where you realize you’re not alone.”

I felt my throat tighten.

Katherine smiled softly.

”You’re going to be a leader, Zora. Not because someone crowns you. Not because someone declares it. But because you already are.”

I breathed out slowly.

”I’m scared.”

She nodded. ”Good. Leaders who aren’t scared are dangerous.”

I laughed weakly.

Katherine leaned back against the railing, looking out over Hilguard again.

”The night is young,” she said. ”And you have time. You don’t have to be ready yet.”

I stood beside her, letting the quiet settle.

”Zora,” she said, ”this world gathering... this summit you mentioned earlier.”

I looked at her. ”Yeah?”

”What should I expect?” she asked. ”What happens at these things? Earth seems very chaotic about them.”

I let out a breath, rubbing my arms against the cool night air.

”I’ve never been to one,” I admitted. ”Not in person. But I’ve watched them. Read about them. And... I can guess.”

Katherine nodded, listening.

”So,” I said, ”first thing you should know, is it’s big.”

”How big?” she asked.

”Think... every major leader from Earth,” I said. ”Presidents. Prime ministers. Diplomats. Advisors. Security teams. Media. Translators. People who handle logistics. People who handle people who handle logistics.”

Katherine blinked. ”That really does sound chaotic.”

”It is,” I said. ”But controlled chaos. Earth has done this for decades.”

We turned down a quieter street, lanterns flickering overhead.

”What do they talk about?” Katherine asked.

”Everything,” I said. ”Trade. Peace. Emergencies. Climate. Technology. Alliances. And now...”

I gestured around us.

”...the merging.”

Katherine’s expression tightened. ”They want answers.”

”They want stability,” I said. ”They want to know if our world is going to keep merging with yours. If magic is going to spread. If their borders mean anything anymore, what to expect, I wouldn’t be surprised it they made a global task force of new magic users.”

She exhaled slowly. ”And they expect you to explain it.”

”Not explain,” I said. ”Represent.”

Katherine frowned. ”Represent what?”

”Hilguard,” I said. ”The lands of Elyndor. The people living between worlds. The ones who didn’t choose this but have to survive it.”

She looked at me thoughtfully.

”What will they do?” she asked. ”At the summit.”

I shrugged lightly.

”They’ll ask questions. Lots of them. They’ll debate. They’ll argue. They’ll try to look calm while panicking internally. They’ll make statements that sound important but don’t actually say anything.”

Katherine snorted. ”So politicians are the same everywhere.”

”Pretty much.”

We reached the path again, the lanterns glowing soft and warm.

”And what about us?” she asked. ”What will we do?”

I swallowed.

”We’ll listen,” I said. ”We’ll answer what we can. We’ll show them we’re not a threat, unless they make us show them. We’ll try to make them understand that the merging isn’t something we control, that there will be losses on both sides.”

Katherine nodded slowly.

”And you,” she said, ”will stand in front of them. With magic they don’t understand. With power they can’t measure. With a presence they’re already worried about.”

I looked down.

”I don’t want to scare them, but if I have to I will.” I said with resolve.

”You might,” she said. ”But you’ll also try to reassure them. Because you’re honest. And because you care.”

I breathed out.

”And what if I mess up?”

Katherine smiled softly.

”Then you’ll learn. And you’ll try again. That’s leadership.”

The river trees whispered in the cool air above us.

The grounds breathed around us, and the night felt suddenly heavier, not frightening, but full of possibility.

Katherine stretched her shoulders slightly as if shaking off the weight of old memories.

”Come on,” she said, voice warm again. ”We should head back. The others will start to worry soon.”

I blinked. ”Worry? About us?”

She smirked. ”About you. I disappear all the time. You’re the one they track like a runaway lantern.”

I groaned. ”I’m not that bad.”

”You are,” she said, nudging me gently as we started walking. ”Lucas checks the windows every ten minutes. Charlie pretends she’s not worried but she absolutely is. And the elder—”

She paused, lips twitching.

”—the elder acts like you’re a priceless artifact that might wander off.”

I laughed. ” He does like his artifacts.”

Katherine laughed softly, the sound blending with the quiet night.

”It’s not a bad thing,” she said. ”They care. And they’re still adjusting to the idea that you’re... well... you.”

We walked past the lantern lit courtyard again, the stones warm under our feet.

”Besides,” she added, ”we have a long day tomorrow. Training, etiquette, we need to discuss what to do about the monsters.”

I sighed. ”Right. The world ending.”

Katherine glanced at me sideways.

”You handled tonight well,” she said. ”Better than you think.”

I looked down. ”I’m still scared, but something happened in the vault. And I feel more grounded.

She nodded. ”Good. That means you’re finding yourself.”

We turned down the main road toward the mansion, the windows glowing softly in the distance.

Katherine slowed her pace just a little, letting the quiet settle between us.

”Zora,” she said, ”whatever happens at that summit... you won’t face it alone.”

”I know,” I said quietly.

She bumped her shoulder against mine.

”Good. Because I’m not letting you walk into a room full of Earth leaders without backup.”

I laughed under my breath.

”And if they get too loud,” she added, smirking, ”I’ll tell them to be quiet for you this time...”

I nudged her. ”Don’t you dare.”

She grinned.

”Then let’s get back before someone sends a search party.”

We walked on, the night still young, and peaceful around us, and the chateau lights waiting like a warm beacon ahead.

Side by side.
