Reality overload

I tried not to panic.

This wasn’t just meeting an elf. This was meeting another elf as an elf. Even if I didn’t know how to be one. Even if the idea made my stomach twist itself into knots.

We stepped onto the training grounds, and she was already there.

Samira’s presence filled the training grounds long before she spoke. The air felt sharper, quieter, like it was holding its breath. Her silver‑white braid shimmered in the sunlight, her armor catching faint glints of magic as she stepped toward me. Elias and Mira sat at the edge of the ring, wooden swords across their laps, whispering excitedly. Halden stood beside me, arms crossed, tail swaying slowly, watching me with that steady, grounding calm she somehow had.

She was tall and elegant, her silver‑white hair braided down her back like a river of moonlight. Her armor shimmered faintly with enchantment, runes glowing along the edges like stars caught in metal. The sword at her hip rested in a sheath carved with flowing Elvish script, the kind that looked more like art than language.

Her eyes locked to on to me  as she approached, pale blue, sharp, serene, ancient in a way that made the world feel quieter.

She stepped forward.

And then she gave a greeting.

Her right hand rose, palm open, fingers together. She placed it gently over her heart, resting, like acknowledging a shared rhythm. Her head bowed, slow and deliberate, chin dipping just enough to show respect without submission. Then her hand lifted, two fingers extended, touching lightly to her forehead—a gesture of clarity, truth, intention. Finally, her arm swept outward in a graceful arc, palm facing the sky, offering peace.

”Sae’len vora, Zora of Hilguard,” she said, her voice melodic and ancient, carrying a weight that settled into the air like a soft chord. At that moment I knew she was very old.

And something inside me opened. Like a door thrown wide I hadn’t known was there

Not a memory.

Not a spell.

Not a vision.

A recognition.

A rhythm.

A language.

A posture.

A culture.

Something deep in my bones...unneeded until this very moment. I suddenly just knew and understood, that I needed to show my elder the respect her age came with.

My breath caught.

And I moved without thinking.

My hand rose, palm open, fingers together. It settled over my heart with perfect placement, gentle and natural. My head bowed  lower than hers had, slow and respectful, exactly the right angle. My fingers touched my forehead with steady precision, like I had done it a thousand times. My arm extended in a smooth, fluid arc, my braid swaying softly behind me.

And the words came out of my mouth with perfect cadence, as if I had spoken them my whole life.

”Sae’len thae, Samira en’Silvarae.”

Halden froze beside me.

Elias’s jaw dropped.

Mira whispered, ”She sounded like an elf...”

”She is an elf Mira...” Elias said elbowing Mira.

Samira’s eyes widened, not dramatically, but enough to show she was genuinely surprised. She stepped closer, studying me with a new kind of focus, her gaze tracing my posture, my stance, the way my fingers rested after the gesture.

”You speak our greeting with perfect form,” she said quietly. ”And your pronunciation... it is native. The night bearer mark does you justice.

My heart hammered. ”I don’t know how I did that, bit I felt I needed to show respect.”

Samira tilted her head, silver hair shifting like liquid light. ”Your blood remembers,” she said. ”Even if your mind does not daughter of the creator.

Her gaze softened, and for the first time, she looked at me not as a stranger, not as a new queen, but as kin.

”You honor our people, Zora.”

My cheeks warmed, and I wasn’t sure if it was pride or fear or something in between. Halden leaned closer and whispered, ”Okay, that was actually amazing, I didn’t know you spoke Elvish...”

Samira straightened, her presence calm and steady, the air around her shifting like the beginning of a storm.

”Now with formalities held lady Zora, Halden, your training begins now.”

Samira circled the training platform with the quiet grace of someone who had spent centuries learning how to move without disturbing the world around her. The air shimmered faintly around her, not with magic, but with presence. Elias and Mira sat cross‑legged at the edge of the ring, wooden swords across their laps, watching with wide eyes. Halden stood beside me, arms crossed, tail swaying slowly, as if she already knew what was coming.

Samira stopped in front of me.

”Before you lift your blade,” she said, ”you must understand what it means to wield one.”

Her voice carried the weight of of battles fought.  impossible to ignore.

”Elven swordsmanship is not a technique,” she continued. ”It is a philosophy. A way of being.”

She stepped back, letting the sunlight catch the runes on her armor. They glowed faintly, like stars waking up.

”Our style is called Sae’len Thir’vala,” she said. ”The Flow of Life.”

She moved her hand in a slow arc, tracing a crescent shape in the air. The motion was so fluid it felt like watching water bend.

”We do not fight the world. We move with it.”

Something inside me stirred, like a string being plucked. A resonance. I didn’t understand it, but I felt it.

Samira’s eyes flicked to me, noticing the shift, but she didn’t comment.

”There are three pillars,” she said, drawing three lines in the dust with the tip of her blade. ”Balance. Clarity. Intention.”

Her voice softened.

”Balance is the center of your body. The place where your weight, your breath, and your purpose meet.”

She tapped the first line.

”Clarity is the stillness of your mind. A pool of moonlit water. No ripples. No fear.”

She tapped the second.

”And intention...” She paused, letting the silence settle. ”Intention is the reason you lift your blade at all.”

Her sword touched the third line.

”Without intention, the sword is only metal.”

I swallowed. The words felt heavy, but familiar, like hearing a lullaby I’d forgotten I knew.

Samira stepped closer.

”Elves fight on breath,” she said. ”Not muscle.”

She inhaled, her chest rising slowly, her blade lifting with the motion. Then she exhaled, and the sword swept down in a perfect crescent arc.

”Inhale to gather. Exhale to release. Hold only when the world holds with you.”

Her movements were so smooth they didn’t seem possible. My fingers twitched, wanting to mimic her.

Samira noticed.

”The Crescent Path,” she said, tracing another arc in the air. ”Our blades rarely strike in straight lines. Straight lines break. Curves endure.”

She moved again, fluid, effortless. The sword danced like moonlight on water.

”Our swordsmanship is not built for domination,” she said quietly. ”It is built for protection.”

Her eyes met mine, and for a moment, I felt something ancient settle inside me. A warmth. A pull. A memory that wasn’t a memory.

”For our people,” she said, ”the sword is a promise. Not a threat.” she said as she raised her blade.

My breath caught.

Samira stepped even closer, her voice lowering.

”You are an elf, Zora. Your blade must reflect your heart.”

Samira lowered her blade, letting it rest at her side as her posture softened. ”Elven sword philosophy is simple,” she said. ”We do not fight to overpower. We fight to out‑think. The blade is an extension of intention, not force. Every movement must be deliberate. Every strike must have purpose.”

Her eyes flicked to my face. Your sword is only half of what you carry.”

She stepped closer, her voice lowering just slightly. ”Geld informed me of your... difficulties your sister told him.

My stomach tightened. ”Difficulties?”

Damn Charlie ratted me out...

”Magic outbursts,” she said plainly. ”Powerful outbursts of your devine magic, Freezing objects. Freezing rooms.” She tilted her head. ”He said it happens when you are frightened. Or overwhelmed. Or angry.”

Frost rose in my cheeks. ”I didn’t mean to,

”I know.” Her tone was calm, not accusing. ”Uncontrolled magic is not shameful. It is simply dangerous.”

She lifted her hand, palm open, and a faint shimmer of pale blue light gathered above it...soft, controlled, steady. ”Magic is not a thing you use. It is a thing you guide. It responds to emotion, yes, but it obeys intention.”

The light flickered, then vanished.

”You have power,” she said. ”Great power. Enough to freeze half a courtyard without meaning to. Enough to harm yourself or others if left unchecked.”

I swallowed hard, the memory of cold rushing up my spine.

Samira’s expression softened. ”That is why I am here. To teach you the sword, yes. But also to teach you control. You will not fear your magic when you understand it.”

She stepped back, lifting her blade again.

”Now,” she said, ”we begin with balance. The sword follows balance. Magic follows the sword.

Samira stepped back, raising her sword.

”show me your stance.” she said

”Lor’thae, sael’thir.” I said as I stepped forward

Samira froze—not in shock, but in a kind of stillness that felt deeper than surprise. Her eyes softened, her expression shifting into something I couldn’t name.

She didn’t correct me. She simply nodded once, slow and deliberate, accepting the title with the quiet gravity of someone who understood exactly what it meant.

”Very well,” she said. ”Begin.”

I stepped forward and dropped into the stance I always used in DLO. Right foot angled back, left foot forward, knees bent just enough, weight braced instead of centered. My shoulders tightened the way they always did, my grip firm, my blade lifted in that familiar guard that had carried me through hours of gameplay.

Samira looked at me for a long moment, her expression unreadable.

”That stance is... unorthodox,” she said finally. Not harsh. Just honest. ”It is not wrong. But it is not ours.”

She stepped toward me, close enough that I could feel the quiet steadiness of her presence. Her hand rose, gentle but sure, and she touched my elbow first, guiding it down. Then she shifted my shoulders, easing the tension out of them with a light press. She nudged my back foot inward, rotated my front foot, and adjusted the angle of my blade until it matched the stance she had shown earlier.

”Hold,” she murmured.

I did.

And the difference hit me instantly.

My weight didn’t brace anymore—it settled.

My balance didn’t lock—it flowed.

My center didn’t feel tight—it aligned.

It was the same stance Samira used.

The same shape.

And standing in it felt completely different from the one I’d built in DLO. I started to feel the muscles in my abdomen, legs, and arms begin to feel the burn.

Samira stepped back, watching me with a small, satisfied nod.

”There,” she said. ”Now you stand as we do.”

Her voice wasn’t proud or dramatic.

Just calm.

Certain.

I understood why her movements looked like water. Because this stance felt like the beginning of learning how to move that way.

Samira stood across from me, sword in hand, posture perfect. Her expression was unreadable, just... assessing.

Halden sat forward on the bench, tail curled tight. Elias and Mira whispered to each other, eyes wide.

Samira raised her blade.

”Zora,” she said, voice calm but carrying weight. ”I want to see your true skill level.”

My stomach flipped. ”Like... a spar?”

”No.” She stepped into position. ”A mock battle.”

My breath caught.

Samira continued, tone sharp. ”No holding back. No hesitation. Use your instincts. Use your magic, if you can control it.”

The last part stung, but she wasn’t wrong.

I tightened my grip on my sword.

Samira nodded once. ”Begin.”

She moved first.

A blur of steel and motion, faster than anything, faster than anyone I’d ever seen. I barely dodged, her blade slicing the air where my shoulder had been.

I reacted without thinking.

A low feint.

A pivot right.

Samira blocked all of it effortlessly.

”Good,” she said. ”Again.”

She pressed forward, elegant, deadly, relentless. I parried, sparks flying. My arms shook. My stance wobbled. My magic flickered at my fingertips.

Not now.

Not now.

Samira lunged.

I dropped low, sliding under her blade, the same move I used in DLO against the orc. She turned sharply, catching my counterstrike with a single‑handed parry.

Her eyes gleamed. ”You rely on unpredictability. Effective against monsters. Less so against trained warriors.”

I gritted my teeth and pushed forward, swinging in a tight arc. She deflected, twisted, and tapped my shoulder with the flat of her blade.

A clean hit.

Halden winced. Elias whispered, ”whoa.” Mira covered her mouth.

Samira stepped back. ”Again.”

I charged.

Samira’s blade struck mine with a force that rattled my bones.

”Again,” she said.

I tried to match her stance, the one she’d just corrected, but my shoulders were tight, my breath uneven. Halden watched from the bench, tail flicking anxiously. Elias sat beside her, Mira leaning forward with her chin on her knees.

Samira lunged.

I blocked, barely.

Fear spiked...fear of failing, fear of disappointing her, fear of hurting someone...and my magic surged in response. Gold frost crawled up my arms, flickering dangerously.

Samira saw it instantly.

”Zora.” Her voice cut through the courtyard like a blade.

I froze.

The frost didn’t.

It burst outward in a sharp pulse, cracking the stone beneath my feet. Mira gasped. Elias grabbed her arm. Halden jumped to her feet.

Samira stepped through the flare without hesitation, grabbed my wrist, and forced my sword down.

”Enough.”

Her tone wasn’t angry.

It was worse.

It was disappointed.

I swallowed hard. ”I didn’t mean—”

”I know you didn’t.” Her eyes locked onto mine, unblinking. ”But intent does not erase danger.”

My breath hitched.

Samira’s voice lowered, sharp and precise. ”I heard what happened. The man you froze.”

My stomach dropped. I had tried not to think about that night. I still felt full of guilt.

”It was an enemy,” she said. ”You were frightened. You reacted. I was told—.”

”He survived.. I said, feeling the futility of my own words. I looked away, shame burning hot under the cold magic still clinging to my skin.

Samira stepped closer. ”You were lucky.”

I blinked. ”Lucky?”

”Yes.” Her gaze flicked to Halden, Elias, Mira. ”Because it was an enemy. Regardless if he survived or not.

Her next words hit like a hammer.

”What happens when it is someone dear to you?”

My breath caught.

”What happens,” she continued, ”when your fear spikes and your magic answers before your mind does? What happens when Halden is standing too close? Or Elias? Or Mira? Or your sister.”

Mira’s eyes widened. Elias swallowed. Halden’s tail curled tight.

I felt sick.

Samira didn’t soften. ”You must get control of yourself, and your emotions. Not later. Not eventually. Now.”

The frost guttered, shrinking under the weight of her words.

She released my wrist.

”Magic is not a reflex,” she said. ”It is not a scream. It is not a shield you throw blindly when you panic.”

Her voice dropped even lower.

”It is power. And power without discipline destroys.”

I stared at the cracked stone, throat tight.

Samira stepped back, raising her sword again...not harshly, but with purpose.

”Breathe,” she said. ”Center yourself. And show me you can hold your magic without letting it hold you.”

I inhaled.

Slow.

Steady.

The frost settled.

Samira nodded once.

”Good, now again.”

And training resumed sharper, heavier, but with her words echoing in every movement.

Steel clashed.

Magic sparked.

My heartbeat thundered.

I tried a frost burst small, controlled — but Samira anticipated it, stepping aside and sweeping my legs. I hit the ground hard, breath knocked out of me.

Samira pointed her sword at my chest.

”Again.”

I scrambled up, panting.

This time I didn’t think.

I moved.

Fast.

Chaotic.

Instinctive.

Samira blocked the first two, but the third caught her off guard. My blade grazed her sleeve.

Halden shot upright. Elias and Mira gasped.

Samira’s eyes sharpened.

”Better,” she said. ”Now show me more.”

She came at me with real force, enough to overwhelm. I blocked, dodged, spun, magic flickering dangerously at my fingertips.

She struck again.

I parried my teeth gritted and the frost surged.

Samira’s voice cut through everything. ”Control it.”

I forced the magic down, teeth clenched.

She nodded once.

Then she attacked with full speed.

I met her blade with mine, sparks flying, feet sliding across stone. Every instinct I’d ever learned in DLO came alive, as the panic‑dodge, the tunnel‑counter, the swarm‑breaker.

Samira blocked, deflected, redirected..but she was watching me now, truly watching.

Studying.

Measuring.

Testing.

Finally, she stepped back, lowering her sword.

”That is your skill level,” she said. ”Raw. Wild. Dangerous. But real.”

I panted, sweat dripping down my face.

Samira’s expression softened.

”We will refine it with balance and control. I will mold you into something to be respected and feared.

By the time the sun dipped low, the training grounds looked like a battlefield made of sweat instead of blood. Today had been nothing but sparing, and balance while standing, balance while stepping, balance while breathing. Samira didn’t let any of us skip a single moment of it.

Halden had been forced into the same stance work as me, her tail flicking in irritation every time Samira tapped her ankle or nudged her shoulder. Elias and Mira tried to copy us, tiny feet wobbling, arms shaking, faces scrunched in fierce concentration. They fell over more times than I could count, but they kept getting back up.

Samira never raised her voice.

She never rushed.

She simply corrected, adjusted, guided.

And she was behind every move.

Every step I took, she was there...a hand at my shoulder, a tap at my wrist, a quiet ”lower” or ”center” or ”again.” Halden got the same treatment. Even Elias and Mira weren’t spared. Samira crouched beside them, gently moving their feet into place, helping them find their tiny centers of gravity.

Hours passed like that.

By the end, sweat clung to every inch of us. My hair stuck to my face, my tunic was soaked through, and my muscles felt like they were humming...sore, heavy, but alive. Halden looked just as wrecked, leaning forward with her hands on her knees, panting. Elias flopped onto the ground like a starfish. Mira sat beside him, legs trembling, trying to pretend she wasn’t exhausted. Their nice clothes covered in dust.

Samira finally exhaled, a long, steady breath.

”That is enough for today.”

She wasn’t tired.

Not even close.

But she looked at us...all of us...with a quiet, approving nod.

”You did well.”

We were all barely standing by the time Samira called the halt. Sweat clung to every inch of us, muscles trembling, clothes sticking to our skin. Elias and Mira collapsed immediately. Halden leaned forward with her hands on her knees, panting hard. I wasn’t much better.

Samira, of course, looked like she’d just taken a calm walk through a garden.

She dismissed the others first, telling them to drink water, stretch, rest. They staggered off toward the courtyard fountain, groaning dramatically. I stayed where I was, trying to catch my breath without looking like I was dying.

The courtyard was silent now.

she didn’t tell me to go.

She stood with her back to me, hands clasped behind her, staring at the training grounds like she was seeing something that wasn’t there anymore.

”Zora,” she said quietly. ”Walk with me.”

I followed her to the far edge of the courtyard, where the old practice tree stood...scarred, burned, carved by decades of training. Samira touched one of the deep scorch marks with her fingertips.

Her voice was low. ”You wonder why I am hard on you.”

I didn’t speak.

She didn’t need me to.

”I was once like you,” she said. ”Young. Powerful. Uncontrolled. Proud.”

Her fingers curled against the bark.

”I believed my magic answered only to me. That discipline was for the weak. That control was optional.”

She exhaled, a sound that wasn’t frustration, but grief.

”I had a sister.”

My breath caught.

”She was gentle. Soft‑spoken. She hated fighting. She used to braid flowers into my hair before training.”

Her voice tightened. ”She believed I could be more than a weapon.”

Samira’s jaw clenched.

”One day... we were attacked. I lost control. Just once. One moment. One surge of fire I thought I could handle.”

She swallowed hard.

”And she was standing too close.”

My stomach dropped.

She didn’t tremble.

She didn’t break.

But her voice did.

”She died before anyone could reach her.”

The world felt too quiet.

Samira stared at the tree, eyes distant. ”I remember the smell of burned flowers. I remember her hands reaching. I remember screaming until my voice broke.”

She closed her eyes.

”I remember the silence after.”

I felt my throat tighten painfully. ”Samira...”

She shook her head. ”I was exiled from my homeland....”

”Elarion’thae.”

The elvish name rolled off her tongue like a wound reopening.

”Kingdom of the First Flame. My home. My family. My people.”

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

”They cast me out because I was dangerous. Because I refused discipline. Because I believed power made me untouchable.”

She finally turned to me.

Her eyes weren’t sharp now.

They weren’t cold.

They were... human.

”You are stronger than I ever was. And I will not let you repeat my mistakes.”

I swallowed hard. ”I don’t want to hurt anyone.”

Samira stepped closer, placing a hand on my shoulder gentle, steady.

”That is why I pushed you. Why I demanded control. Why I do not tolerate carelessness.”

Her voice cracked. ”Because I will not watch another girl lose someone she loves.”

I nodded, tears burning behind my eyes. ”I understand.”

Samira breathed out slowly....relief, grief, acceptance all tangled together.

”Good... you remind me of her you know. Your kindness, she had the same look you do.

Without another word, she stepped back, mask sliding into place again.

”Training resumes tomorrow.”

But this time...

I didn’t dread it.

I understood it.
