Reality overload

The pod hissed open as I floated back to reality. The temperature difference more obvious as cold mist rolled out and warm air flooded into my pod. ” Great now I’ve tuned my pod I ti a refrigerator.”

I sat up as Charlie’s pod opened.

Riley was already up setting her head gear on the table next to her. That’s when I noticed it

A large fluffy tail swaying behind Riley iron grey in color. She wasn’t even aware of it yet. Which didn’t make sense, it was large enough to have its own zip code.

I stepped out of the pod, lowering my voice like I was approaching a startled animal.

”Umm... Riley, stay calm, you have—”

before I could finish she turned to me. Her eyes going wide.

WHAO- Kris your hair...”

”Huh...what?”

Charlie looked between us, her expression shifting from confusion to realization.

”Your hair is mostly white now, Kris. Also... Riley, you have a tail.”

Way to rip the band-aid off Charlie I giggled. Stopping as soon as I realized I had.

Riley gasped. ”NO WAY... where!?”

She spun in circles, trying to catch sight of it, her movements frantic and endearing. She only managed fleeting glimpses.

Charlie stepped closer and gently pulled a lock of my hair forward.

”We really should dye your hair back to red, squirt.”

”Yea I’m not for that anime protagonist look.” I lamented.

We could hear Nate and Lucas downstairs bickering. About aching joints or something. Their voices coming faintly through the floorboards.

A muffled ’WHUMP’ sounded, and I heard Lucas curse about ”doorways” and

”to tall.”

Charlie didn’t hesitate for a second, taking full advantage of my ADHD.

”Riley... bring Kris to my room we need to have a girls chat.”

”Wait- wha... why?” I tried to dodge but they each grabbed ahold of an arm. Frog marching me to wards Charlie’s room.

”Is this really necessary?” I complained

”I’ve still got pod lag.”

”It’s mandatory” Riley chimed with a broad grin.

I was pushed into the room the door clicking shut behind me like the lid of a coffin. I stood there in the middle of the room my arms wrapped around me. My shoulders tight. Her room smelled of lavender and lilac. Making the heavy atmosphere a little lighter.

Charlie took a slow breath, steadying herself before speaking.

”Kris... we need to talk about college.”

I paled. ”What- why?”

Riley sighed. ”Ohh boy..”

Charlie took a step close to me placing her hand on my shoulder. Her face had that serious big sister look she rarely used in less it was important.

”You’re going to have to attend college as a girl.”her words like a two ton hammer, and me I was the piece of metal under it.

My face frosted over instantly. Charlie- I can’t- I’m not-it’s impossible.”

Her face wasn’t teasing. And that made the whole thing worse.

Riley put her hand on my back making small circles. ”We’re not teasing you this time Kris.”

Actually, that’s part of what I need to say.”Charlie’s voice softening.

I looked at her confused. ”What?”

She looked at me her eyes full of tenderness, and something close to guilt.

”I- I know I’ve been teasing you about your transformation. I know how this whole thing has been messing with your head.”

My breath hitched slightly.

”I just didn’t realize how much.”she finished

”I joke when I’m scared.” She continued. ”And I am scared for you. This transition...it’s not something that we can undo.

Your body is changing. Your voice. Your face.” She brushed a strand of my hair gently. ” Your hair, I know it’s a lot, and I’m sorry I didn’t handle it better.

I swallowed hard. ”I didn’t ask for any of this.”

”I know,” Charlie whispered. ”And I’m sorry I made it harder.”

Riley nodded her agreement. ” you got thrown in the deep end without floaties.”

Charlie’s hand cupped my cheek. Her eyes shimmering slightly. ”But Kris.. you’re going to have to accept reality sooner or later. Not for us or because we want you to. But because it’s the only way you stop feeling like you’re drowning.

My eyes threatened to spill over. ” it’s... just scary.”

I know Charlie said all of us are were all changing. Riley has a tail for crying out loud. Nate is going to be old. Lucas...he will be fine as long as he ducks through doors.

’Shit she was right.’ I thought.

I looked down at my hands. Smaller. More delicate, the fingers tapered as if they were someone who moisturized every day.

I sighed. ” I know you guys are just trying to protect me. I know that it’s necessary. But it doesn’t change the fact that I don’t even know the first thing about being a girl. Not to mention the embarrassment.

Charlie sighed. ” As for that It means presenting as a girl. Clothes, voice, mannerisms — whatever feels comfortable enough that no one questions you.”

I frosted. ”Charlie—”

”It’s not about changing you,” she said. Placating me ”It’s about protecting you. If the devs try to track you down, they’ll be looking for a guy. Not you.”

Riley added, ”People think you’re a girl anyway. You’re just leaning into what they already see.”

”Well there’s a lot but Riley and I can help you with that.” Charlie’s words soft and gentle.

”Yeah-we can help with the outfits and hair stuff so don’t worry.” Riley gave me a thumbs up. Trying to comfort me but it had the opposite effect.

”But what if I screw up and get found out.” My attempt at argument sounding pitiful even to me.

”Then you call us...” she said. ” Riley and I will help you sort it out.”

Riley nodded. ”You’re basically doing witness protection, but with eyeliner.”

I groaned ”Riley...”

What? It’s true.”

Charlie leaned forward, voice gentler. ”It also means...you’ll have to get comfortable with people seeing you that way. Professors. Classmates. Random strangers.... And boys”

My chest tightened again. ”That’s the part that scares me.”

”I know,” Charlie said. ”And I’m not pretending it’s easy. But your body already changed. Your voice. Your face. Your height. You can’t hide that. And if you try to go as your old self, it’ll draw more attention, not less.”

At that moment Lucas and Nate knocked on the door.

”Kris?” Lucas called. ”Everything okay?”

Nate added, ”Do you need snacks? Emotional support snacks?”

Charlie didn’t turn. ”Kick rocks! Girl talk!”

Riley yelled, ”Unless someone’s bleeding, go away!”

A pause.

”...are you bleeding?” Nate asked.

”No!” all three shouted.

Their footsteps retreated.

Charlie hesitated for a moment insure how to say the next part. ” Now...for the harder part.”

I paled ”what now!”

”Your name...”She cringed as soon as she saw the look on my face.

I stiffened. ”NO- ABSOLUTELY NOT... I’m not changing my name Charlie!”

Charlie held up her hands. ”I’m not asking you to pick some random girl name. I’m saying... we use the one Mom picked.”

Riley and I blinked hard. ”What?” we both said in unison.

Charlie’s voice softened. ”The name she chose before you were born. Because she thought you were going to be a girl.”

I stared dumbstruck. ”Charlie... I didn’t-what do you mean.”

”Mom,” Charlie said quietly. ”She told me.”

I looked at her in confusion and swallowed. ”When?”

Charlie’s eyes unfocused.

———————————————///////////

She was seven.

Kris was five, roaring and playing withplastic dinosaurs fighting a stuffed bear, making sound effects so dramatic the windows rattled. The living room smelled like cinnamon tea and laundry detergent. Afternoon sunlight streamed through the curtains, turning dust motes into tiny floating stars.

Their mother sat beside Charlie, brushing her hair into a neat ponytail.

”Sweetheart,” she said softly, ”can I tell you a secret?”

Charlie nodded eagerly, eyes wide. ”A real one?”

”A very real one.”

Her mother smiled — that warm, tired smile she always had when Dad was working late.

”When I was pregnant with your little brother,” her mother said, ”the doctors told me he was going to be a girl.”

”But he’s not,” Charlie said her confusion showing as her brow furrowed.

”No,” her mother laughed. ”He surprised us all. But before we knew that... I picked a name.”

Charlie leaned in. ”What name?”

Her mother cupped her hands and whispered into her ear

Charlie’s eyes widened. ”That’s pretty!”

”I thought so too.” Her mother kissed her forehead. ”And if he had been a girl, that would’ve been his name.”

Charlie looked at Kris, who was currently making a T‑rex fight a sock.

”Does he know?”

”No,” her mother said. ”He doesn’t need to. But you’re his big sister. And I thought you would like to know.

”Why would he need it?” Charlie asked,

Her mother smiled. ”You ask some good question little squirt.”Her smile faded a little

”It’s because life is strange, baby. And sometimes the world asks us to be things we never expected. If that ever happens... you’ll help each other. Won’t you?”

Charlie nodded. ”Always.”

”I know you will,” her mother whispered.

————————————————////

Charlies eyes refocused on the present. A smile curling her lip.

Charlie... what was the name.” I asked leaning closer.

She took my hand whispering. ”Zora.”

I froze.

”Mom said that it reminded her of something that weathers storms and grows back stronger when dawn breaks.

Riley smiled. ”That actually sounds like you.”

”I don’t... I don’t know how to feel about that.”

Charlie squeezed my fingers. ”You don’t have to know. You just have to hear me when I say this. Mom loved you. And she picked that name because she thought it fit you. Before she ever saw your face.

It’s not about forcing you into anything. It’s about giving you a shield. One mom picked herself.”

My eyes stung ” Yeah...that doesn’t sound too bad.” I sniffed ”Okay,” I said softly. ”I’ll do it. I’ll go as... her.”

Riley squeed yes actually squeed. ”Operation College Girl is officially a go.”

”Riley—!”

”What? It’s a good name.”

Charlie laughed, pulling me into another hug.

”You’re going to be okay,” she murmured. ”I promise.”

Riley cleared her throat dramatically. ”Okay. Emotional moment over. I’m invoking my sacred right as the chaos gremlin.”

Charlie groaned. ”Riley—”

”Nope. Too late.” Riley pointed at Kris. ”If your name is going to be Zora, you are legally obligated to be adorable at least 40% of the time.”

Kris choked. ”I’m not adorable!”

”Oh my God,” Riley gasped. ”He said it in the adorable voice.”

Charlie wheezed. ”He DID.”

Kris covered his face. ”Stop—!”

”You love us,” Riley said.

Charlie kissed the top of his head. ”And we love you.”

Kris’s ears went pink.

But he smiled.

A small, real smile.

———————————————————-

Far away...or impossibly close...no one could say.

The chamber around Hestia was a cosmic atelier, a place where creation itself took shape.

Nebulous strands of raw existence drifted through the air like glowing plasma. Shards of half‑formed worlds pulsed in suspended orbs. The floor beneath her feet shimmered with shifting constellations, each step leaving ripples of stardust.

Hestia stood at the center of it all — serene, ancient, radiant — her presence, the quiet hum of the universe remembering how to breathe. She had been watching, guarding.

Her expression soft, thoughtful, touched with something like pride.

Just... keeping an eye on her children she had claimed.

Before her a fire flickered, and in its glow, a piece of parchment appeared — a digital record made physical by divine will.

A college registration form.

A legal identity file.

A government database entry.

All of them.

Stacked neatly in front of her.

Kris’s name printed across the top.

Hestia lifted her hand.

The flames leaned toward her fingers like they recognized their mother.

She whispered her breath like a current of possibility ”Zora.”

The fire swirled letters faded. Ink reshaped. And the parchment glowed.

A tiny Infinitesimal spark of her power.

And in every system, every archive, every bureaucratic corner of the mortal world...everywhere except for one...

Kris’s legal name and identity shifted, I wouldn’t have worked before. Kris was to against it. Thus law forbade it. But now...it was possible.

It wasn’t erased, or overwritten. Just shifted. Fulfilled.

The name his mother chose.

The name she whispered to Charlie.

The name meant for him before fate took a different turn.

Hestia smiled— warm, ancient, proud.

”Your mother chose well,” she murmured to the flames. ”And I honor her choice.”

The fire crackled in agreement.

Then the papers vanished, returning to their digital homes, changed forever.

And Hestia leaned back, satisfied. This would be the last time she could help them her power needed to be preserved for the coming storm.

”Now,” she says softly, ”let them discover it in their own time.

She had just finished that, a tiny act of creation compared to what she was truly capable of. Barely a spark. A whisper. A brushstroke.

But even that was enough to disturb the fabric of the divine.

A ripple of pressure rolled through the chamber.

The boundary folded in on itself

And then he appeared.

Thalorin, The God of Boundaries, stepped from a tear in the air — tall, and sharp‑eyed, wrapped in deep blue and silver that shimmered like the edge of reality itself. His presence felt like the line between worlds, the tension of a horizon, the moment before a lightning breaks.

He did not look pleased. He looked haggard, and Infinitely tired.

”You used your power,” he said, voice low and resonant.

Hestia didn’t turn. She continued weaving a thin thread of creation between her fingers, letting it twist and glow.

”A spark,” she said. ”Nothing more.”

Thalorin’s jaw tightened. ”A spark from you is enough to tilt the balance.”

Hestia smiled faintly. ”Only if the balance was already tilting.”

Thalorin stepped closer, the air around him vibrating with restrained force. ”You should not intervene unless the situation demands it. It’s to dangerous.

Hestia finally looked at him — her eyes ancient, warm, and terrifying in their depth.

”Hestia...,” he sighed. ”the worlds are merging faster than predicted. The first permanent collision points have already formed. More will soon follow.”

”I know.”she breathed

”You cannot shield them all.”

”I can shield mine!” She snapped her power pulsing.

Thalorin’s expression softened — barely, but enough to show his respect.

”You always were the most human of us.”

Hestia smiled. ”And you always pretended not to care.”

A rumble of amusement rolled through the room.

Thalorin studied her. ”When the final convergence comes, even gods will not be spared.”

Hestia closed her hand, extinguishing the flame.

”I am prepared.” She looked tired as well. Like all of creation weighed heavy on her, which it did.

”I will not let my child be swallowed by forces she did not choose.”

Thalorin’s expression shifted — confusion, then suspicion, then something like dread.

”Hestia,” he said slowly, ”what have you done?”

Hestia lifted her hand.

The thread of creation unfurled, spiraling upward like a newborn galaxy.

”She does not merely carry my protection,” Hestia murmured. ”She carries my...essence.”

Thalorin froze.

Utterly.

The shadows around him recoiled, as if even they understood the magnitude of what she had said.

”Hestia,” he whispered, ”you bound your essence to a mortal child?”

”Not bound,” she corrected gently. ”Given.”

Thalorin stared at her as if she had spoken blasphemy.

Thalorin stepped forward, voice sharp. ”Do you understand what that means? A mortal carrying the spark of the Creator? She is no longer hidden. She is a beacon. A nexus. A threat.”

Hestia’s gaze did not waver. ”She was already a nexus. The worlds touched her long before I did.”

Thalorin’s voice dropped to a harsh whisper. ”But now she carries you. Your fire. Your potential. Your power.”

Hestia let the thread dissolve into stardust.

”She carries possibility,” she said. ”And possibility is the one thing creation cannot exist without.”

Thalorin’s eyes widened — not with anger, but with fear.

”Hestia... the other gods will feel this.”

”They already do,” Hestia said. ”Some will come to test her. Some to claim her. Some to destroy her.”

Hestia’s voice softened, but her power thrummed beneath every word.

”And they will fail.” A wave of force emanating from her with every word.

Thalorin stared at her, the weight of her conviction pressing against him like gravity.

”You chose her,” he breathed. ”You chose your protégé.”

Hestia’s expression softened. ”I did.”

”You have not chosen a protégé since the First Age,” he said quietly. ”Not since the worlds were young.”

”I have not needed to,” Hestia replied. ”Until now.”

Thalorin’s voice trembled — the first crack in the composure of a god who had watched universes collide.

”Hestia... if she carries your essence, then when the convergence comes—”

”She will be at its center,” Hestia finished.

”And she will not remain mortal.” He rasped,

Hestia’s eyes dimmed with sorrow. ”I am aware.”

Thalorin bowed his head, not in submission, but in reverence.

”You have changed the course of the convergence,” he said. ”And the course of her life.”

Hestia looked toward the mortal world — toward a small bedroom where a frightened child laughed through tears, unaware of the divine spark burning quietly inside her.

”Yes,” Hestia murmured. ”I have.”

Thalorin stepped back into the boundary tear, his form dissolving into shimmering lines.

”Then may your creation endure the storm,” he said.

”And may your boundaries hold,” Hestia replied.

The tear sealed.

The chamber dimmed.

And Hestia whispered into the quiet.

”Grow strong, my little Zora. The world will need you.”

Kris wipes her eyes, still embarrassed from Riley’s teasing.

Charlie squeezes her hand.

Riley nudges her with a shoulder.

None of them know that the world outside has already shifted to match the truth they’re only beginning to accept.

None of them know that the name ”Zora” is no longer a hypothetical. It was real and...now physical...

It’s his, or to say, now hers

And when they find out...

that’s going to be a moment.
