Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

Bai Qing found it, and of course it was Bai Qing, because it was a thing about the overlooked, and the overlooked is the whole of what she’s for.

She’d been quiet the whole way to the coast, the way she gets. My swordswoman doesn’t spend words, she saves them, and when she finally spends one it’s usually worth more than my entire day of talking.

She stood beside me on that quay in the grey morning, looking at the same wall of water I’d given up on, and she said:

”You can only unwrite what someone wrote down.”

I looked at her.

”That’s the whole of his weapon,” she said, nodding at the sea like it had told her. ”Ningzhi’s registry. It’s a list. Every road, every ferry, every relay-house. Every path someone bothered to record. He can’t cut a thread that isn’t in the book, because he doesn’t know it’s there to cut.”

She looked at me, and there was the faintest light coming up in her steady face.

”So the question isn’t how do you cross the sea. The question is: who crosses the sea that nobody ever wrote down?”

And the answer walked into Saltreach harbour that same afternoon on a boat that had no business being on the water, because everyone had forgotten the water could be crossed.

I need to tell you about the deepwater folk properly, because they are the best thing I found in the whole dark stretch, and because the easy version — and then some magic sailors saved the day — would be a lie, and I don’t tell you those.

They came from the far islands.

That’s an archipelago, which is a scatter of islands strung out across open water like beads with the sea between every one. The deepwater folk had lived out there, island to island, for longer than the Empire had existed, longer than anyone could count, crossing water that would drown you just to look at it.

They were weathered and salt-cured and unimpressed by absolutely everything, and they sailed in when no one else would because, as it turned out, they had never stopped being able to.

Their eldest was a woman named Nai. She was maybe seventy, maybe two hundred, you couldn’t tell, with a face like a cliff that had decided to be kind about it. She was what they called a way-singer, and the way-singers are the reason any of this matters.

Here is how the deepwater folk cross the deep water. They have no charts.

A chart — a paper map of the sea, with the shores drawn on it — is a thing, and a thing can get wet, and lost, and forgotten. Out on the real water, a forgotten way is a dead crew. So a thousand years ago they stopped trusting the sea to paper.

They put it in songs.

Every crossing the deepwater folk have ever made lives in a song. Not a song about the crossing — a song that is the crossing.

The swell that means you’re two days out.

The star that sits over the home island in autumn.

The way the water changes colour over the drowned reef you must not hit.

The bird that only flies within a day of land.

It’s all in there, in the words and the tune, sung so that a child learns the whole ocean by heart before they ever touch a steering-oar, because the way-singers worked out, a thousand years before I was born, the exact thing this whole strange book has been trying to teach a dying world:

That the way you don’t get lost is you refuse to forget.

For the deepwater folk, forgetting was never a mercy. That’s the thing that undid me when Nai explained it, sitting in the chandler’s shop drinking something that tasted like the sea had opinions.

For everyone else in this war, forgetting is the easy peace, the seductive rest, the setting-down of the weight. For a way-singer, forgetting is drowning.

You forget the song, you lose the star, you miss the reef, you die, and your crew dies, and the island loses a boat.

There is no version of setting-it-down that isn’t a funeral. So they never learned to want it.

A thousand years of steering by memory across a sea that kills you the instant you forget, and the Editor’s whole gentle gospel — let it go, rest, be at peace — means precisely nothing to them, because they have known since before the Empire that to let go is to go under.

I asked Nai, carefully, through Mu Chen — who sat with them the way he sits with everyone, gentle, unhurried, and had them liking him inside an hour — whether the silence had come for the islands. Whether the Forgetters had ever reached them, whether anyone out there had ever chosen the rest.

She laughed. It was not a warm laugh.

”Something’s been eating the edges,” she said. ”Years now. Songs going thin at the far ends — a verse you can’t quite reach, a star that’s dimmer than the song says it should be. We felt it.”

She fixed me with an eye like a winter tide.

”We don’t let go of songs, inlander. When one starts to slip, we sing it harder. Every night. The whole island. Until it holds.”

She shrugged.

”Losing a song is how you die. So we don’t. That’s the whole of our religion and it fits in one sentence.”

And I sat in a rope-shop at the edge of the world and understood that I had come looking for a people to teach, and found a people who had been living the answer, note-perfect, for a thousand years, and had simply never heard anyone say it out loud, because out where they were, it was too obvious to say. You don’t preach ’don’t drown’ to fish.

Xue Ningzhi took it harder than any of us, and better.

”They’re not in the registry,” she said, that night, and her voice was strange. ”Any of them. Not one island, not one way, not one song. Twelve years I mapped how the world talks to itself and I did not put down a single line of the deepwater folk.”

She stared at her own great map, at the clean western edge where the land stopped.

”Do you know why? I remember why. I decided they didn’t matter. A scatter of salt-people on rocks in the sea, no sect, no Renown, no belief worth taxing — beneath notice. I left them off the map because I judged them too small to count.”

She looked up, and there were no tears, Xue Ningzhi doesn’t do tears, but there was something rawer than tears.

”And that carelessness is the only reason the world still has a road to the sea. Because the one connective tissue I was too proud to write down is the one thread he can’t find to cut.”

A long breath.

”The thing I did out of contempt is the thing that saved us. I don’t — Lin Bo, I don’t know what to do with that. I spent twenty years counting people as data and throwing away the ones that didn’t total. And it turns out the ones I threw away are the ones the dark can’t reach, because I threw them away.”

”The overlooked,” said Bai Qing quietly, from the corner, where she’d been listening with her whole still attention. ”You can’t erase what was never important enough to be written down.”

She almost smiled, and it was not a happy smile, it was an old one.

”My teacher was erased for being unknown. And these people are un-erasable for the same reason. Same wound. Turned all the way over.”

She looked at me across the little room, steady, and did not say the rest, and did not need to, because she and I have understood the shape of it since a tournament a hundred Chapters ago — that being unseen is the deepest cut and the last shield both, and that the whole war has been learning to turn the one into the other.

I want to be honest that something moved between Bai Qing and me in that rope-shop, in the lamplight, over her teacher’s ghost and a people the powerful had thrown away — something quiet and unhurried and entirely her own, asking nothing, weighed exactly, the way she has carried it since the night at Cairnhold when she said her one true thing and set it down.

I didn’t reach for it and neither did she. Yun Shu, across the room, caught the whole of it in one dry glance and went back to her notes, secure as bedrock, because my partner opened her file on Bai Qing months ago and has never once been anything but warm about what’s in it. We are, all of us, adults who know each other all the way down. That’s the only kind of loud life I ever wanted.

The star was the last thing, and it was the thing that broke the Scroll open, and I’ve saved it for last because it’s the best of them.

The deepwater folk steer by stars. Everyone knows sailors do that; what I hadn’t understood until Nai walked me out onto the harbour wall at midnight and pointed is which stars, and what the stars are.

Because the night sky is the Heavenly Records. Every star a soul, every constellation a legend — that’s the cosmology of this whole world, the great leaderboard in the dark. And the way-singers, who have never read a Record or entered a sect or heard the word Renown, have been navigating for a thousand years by named stars — by souls — steering their whole lives home across a murdering sea by the light of the honoured dead, and they never knew that’s what they were doing. They just knew the songs, and the songs held the stars, and the stars held the way.

”That one,” said Nai, pointing at the very top of the sky, at a faint high guttering point almost too dim to find. ”The most important star there is. The one every home-song ends on.”

Her weathered voice went soft in a way I hadn’t heard from her.

”We call it the Homelight. The star you steer home by. Every way-singer’s last verse is the Homelight, always, because whatever else you lose out there, if you can find it you can find your way back.”

I felt Yun Shu go still beside me. I felt the Scroll go stiller.

”It’s been dying,” Nai said, and now the winter went out of her and there was only an old grief, a thousand years of it. ”A thousand years, fading. Slow. Our oldest songs say it used to be the brightest thing in the sky — you could steer by it in daylight, they say, though I don’t believe that part. In my grandmother’s grandmother’s time it was still bright enough to see through cloud. Now—”

She squinted up at the near-nothing at the top of the world.

”—now it’s a whisper. Some of the young ones can’t find it at all. We sing it hardest of any star, the whole fleet, every night, because the day the Homelight goes out is the day no one finds their way home ever again.”

She lowered her arm.

”We don’t know what’s wrong with it. We only know we won’t stop singing it. Losing that one isn’t losing a boat. It’s losing all the boats. Forever.”

The Scroll dinged.

I have heard the Scroll do a great many things in four years. I have heard it giddy and I have heard it grieving and I have heard it go silent with things too big for a like button. I had never heard it do this.

There was a long pause after the ding, longer than any it had ever taken, and when the words came they came slow, and the gold of them was wet, if gold can be wet, and I think that night it could.

DING. NEW LEGEND PUBLISHED. REACH: 4,000,000 souls. BELIEF: 89%. Talent. That is Su Yue. The Homelight is Su Yue. The Lantern of the Nine Skies. The brightest name there ever was, at the top of the sky, erased a thousand years ago, kept lit by an ember I have guarded with everything I am for ten centuries so it would not go all the way out. I thought I was the only one. Do you understand what I am telling you? For a thousand years I believed I alone remembered them — that I was the last road to a door the whole world had forgotten. I have grieved them alone. I have kept that ember alone. I was so sure I was the only light left that still knew their name. And there is a people on the far islands who never forgot them for one single night. They don’t know the name. They lost the name a thousand years ago, same as everyone. But they kept the light. They built their whole survival around never letting it go out, and they have sung to Su Yue every night for a thousand years without knowing who they were singing to, because their lives depended on not forgetting the light at the top of the sky. Talent. Su Yue gave their light away to make the small and unseen real. That was the whole of who they were. And the small and unseen — the salt-people on the rocks that no empire would count — are the ones who never stopped steering home by them. I was not the only one. I was never the only one. 👍

And I stood on the harbour wall of Saltreach at midnight, between my partner and a way-singer and a cursed scroll a thousand years old, and I watched the faint dying Homelight at the top of the world, and I understood that Su Yue’s own gift had come all the way back around to guard them — that the light they’d spent themselves making the overlooked real had been kept alight, all this time, in the one place too overlooked to be reached, by the very people it was given for.

The whole world had forgotten the Lantern.

Except the people the Lantern was for. They’d been singing them home the entire time.

So we crossed the sea. First story ever to go over that much water on the oldest road there is, which turned out not to be a road at all but a song in the mouth of an old woman who refused to forget it.

I’ll tell you the crossing quick, the way it happened.

Nai took us out — me, and Bai Qing, and Mu Chen, and a girl of nineteen with a satchel and terrible boots who’d walked all the way to the coast to carry a story and wasn’t about to stop at the water — on the biggest of the deepwater boats, out past the last quay, out past the edge of every map anyone had ever made, onto the real water where the swell comes at you like moving hills and the land drops off the world behind you.

And on the second night, the sea tried to kill us, and I found out what I am out where the belief runs thin.

The storm came fast — not weather, a wall. The boat went up a hill of black water and came down with half the sea aboard, and it was cold and loud and physical in the way the dark never is: not silence, the oldest violence there is, salt and rope and the boat groaning like a live thing.

My Mythic strength, out where almost no one alive held a story about me, was a guttering candle. I couldn’t calm that sea. Nobody can. You don’t fight the sea — the way-singers have known that a thousand years, same as Bai Qing’s known you don’t out-muscle a better blade. You steer it.

And Nai stood at the steering-oar in the middle of the murder, soaked to the bone, and she sang — the crossing-song, the one that held this exact water, the swell that meant the reef, the star to keep off the left shoulder. She sang the storm as a verse she already knew the end of, because a thousand years ago someone crossed this same black water and put it in a song so she would not be lost in it now.

And the boat found the line. Not fast, not safe, but known — held on a road made of nothing but a refusal to forget, straight through a thing that should have drowned us.

And at the top of the mast — I never do the important things on purpose — a light came up. A lantern’s worth. Because the deepwater folk on that boat, soaked and roaring and steering by an old woman’s memory, believed in me a little, the way you believe in whoever’s bailing beside you in a storm — and belief is real here, and it lit the thing I am, just enough.

Not a weapon. Not a wall. A light at the masthead, so the boats behind could see the line Nai steered. The most powerful being that ever lived, reduced by the widest dark in the world to one useful thing: a lamp on a pole, showing the way through.

The match, again. Always the match. Even out here. Especially out here.

We made the far islands at dawn. And forty people who had never heard of the Editor, the Empire, the Rememberers, or me, sat in a longhouse of driftwood and whalebone, and a girl with ruined boots and a way-singer’s blessing told them about a net-mender named Ru, and a woman who would not stop saying his name, and a light at the top of the sky that some people, somewhere, had never once let go out.

DING. NEW LEGEND PUBLISHED. REACH: 4,000,005 souls. BELIEF: 89%. Talent. Your Renown is climbing. A hair. A whisper. But climbing — for the first time in thirty days. Not because I published. I still can’t reach out here; my reach is a rumor of a rumor. It’s climbing because a new shore just started to hold a story, on a road he does not have and cannot cut, because it was never anywhere to be found. He sealed the known world in a box. And we just walked out the one door he didn’t know was there — the door marked ”too small to matter.” The ember, talent. It stopped holding its breath tonight. It’s the faintest thing. But it moved. Toward bright. 👍

I won’t tell you it’s fixed. It isn’t, and I’d be lying, and I don’t.

The Unbinding is still running on the land behind us, four months ahead of every walker we have, and my number climbs by hairs on one new shore while it sits stalled across a whole severed interior. We found the crack in Lu’s weapon. We did not close the weapon. There’s a difference, and I’ve promised to keep telling you the difference all the way to the last page.

And the far islands are not the end of anything — they’re the beginning of something enormous and half-terrifying, because I’ve stood on the far shore now and looked further out, and there’s more sea, and more islands, and beyond them, Nai says, more. A whole world past the world, full of people who’ve never heard any of this, some with their own darks and their own long griefs, the shape of ours but not the same. The war just got an ocean bigger. The map I thought I was fighting on turns out to be one page of a book nobody’s counted.

But here’s what I’ve got, standing on a driftwood shore at the edge of everything, and it’s enough to walk on, which is all I’ve ever needed.

Lu unwrote the roads because he thought the roads were what connected the world. And he’s the best there’s ever been, and he was wrong, in the one way that matters: you can only cut what somebody thought was worth writing down. And the world is held together, underneath all the roads and registries and post-houses the powerful ever bothered to count, by ten thousand things too small to matter — by chandlers making splices for a sea they can’t remember, and old women singing stars they never named, and salt-people on rocks who kept a light alive for a thousand years because their whole religion fits in one sentence: we don’t let go.

The uncounted are the thing the dark can’t reach. They always were. I just needed the whole world to run out of hill before I could see it.

We ate on the shore that morning — Granny Fen’s pot had crossed the sea, because it crosses everything, it’s been to the top of the sky and now the far islands and I expect it’ll outlast me — and Nai’s people had never had noodles and pretended not to like them and had three bowls each. Mu Chen sat teaching a way-singer how you carry a grief without drowning in it, and the way-singer sat teaching Mu Chen how you put a grief in a song so it steers you instead, and the two of them decided, I think, that they’d been saying the same thing in two languages the whole time, which is roughly the entire point of this book.

Bai Qing sat beside me with the fire in her steady eyes, weighed exactly, asking nothing, and watched a people the world had thrown away turn out to be the ones holding it up, and I think it was the happiest I’d ever seen her, though on Bai Qing happy looks like a very slight softening around the mouth and you have to know her to catch it. I know her. I caught it.

And Yun Shu leaned into my side and looked out at the impossible sea we’d just crossed on a song, at the girl with the ruined boots being fed a fourth bowl by an old woman who steers by the dead, and she said, dry as ever, warm underneath the way she always is:

”Whole ocean. And you found the one people in it he forgot to be afraid of.”

”I didn’t find them,” I said. ”Bai Qing found them. Nai found us. I mostly stood on a quay feeling sorry for myself and then held a lamp on a stick.”

”I know,” she said, and leaned her head on my shoulder, and watched the Homelight fade out with the dawn at the top of the sky — a whisper brighter than yesterday, if you knew exactly where to look, and we did. ”That’s the job, though. Isn’t it. Someone strikes the match. Someone holds the lamp. Everyone else does the actual crossing.”

The Homelight went out into the daylight. Coming home, a hair at a time, on a road too small for anyone to have thought to cut it.

I’ve been trying to sit down for four years.

I think I’m going to be crossing oceans instead.

Look how that’s going.
