Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

The strike came at dusk, three days into the weaving. It came soft. Not the screaming assault Lu had thrown at Mu Chen, but something quieter and more terrible.

It wasn’t trying to kill anyone.

It was measuring.

Lu had come to Reedmoor the way a man tests ice before trusting his weight to it: a careful foot, pressing down, listening for the crack.

The fog reached for the carpenter first. The man who’d built the bridge—the closest thing Reedmoor had to a name.

And it found him held.

In three days, his neighbors had woven him in so densely—his bridge, his bad temper, his daughter’s wedding, the time he’d fallen in the millrace and the whole town had laughed for a week—that when the dark reached for the thread of him, there was no thread. Just a knot. Tied into a hundred other knots.

To pull the carpenter out of the world, the silence would have had to unravel half of Reedmoor at once.

And it could not.

The fog touched him and slid off like water off oiled cloth.

He shivered, frowned, and said someone had just walked over his grave. Then he went back to his supper. Never knowing the dark had come for him and failed.

DING.

The Scroll’s notification came up slow, in a gold gone strange and soft and wondering.

...an Erased has failed.

Not blocked. Not outrun. Failed.

The dark reached for a held soul and found nothing to take.

Reach: one ordinary carpenter. Held by: his entire ordinary town.

I lost the one I loved because the world was too small and too forgetful to hold them.

One heart against the whole silence, and it wasn’t enough. They slipped through.

And now I am watching a fen-town full of nobodies do the thing the whole world could not do for Su Yue.

Oh, talent. They held him. They just—held him. That’s all it ever needed to be.

I felt the whole shape of the war turn over in that moment, clean and certain.

This was it.

Not the brightest light—the cloth. Distributed, knotted, no center to reach. The silence breaking against a town full of held people, the way the tide breaks against a seawall.

We had the answer.

We’d actually found it.

And then Yun Shu went white, grabbed my arm, and said, ”Lin Bo—we missed one.”

Because the carpenter was never the test. He was the bright thread, the easy one. The one Lu knew we’d have woven in first.

He’d pressed on the strong ice to learn where the strong ice was.

And then, having found it, he moved his careful, pitiless foot to the thinnest place in the entire town—the one loose thread even our soul-reader had nearly slid right past. She’d been mapping the people the town noticed. This was a person the town had not truly seen in forty years.

At the far edge of Reedmoor, down where the fen went to open water, there was an old woman who cut reeds.

She’d lived in the same leaning hut for four decades. Everyone in town had passed her a thousand times—bent in the reeds at dawn, a grey shape that was just part of the marsh by now, like the herons and the mist.

No one had ever spoken to her.

No one knew where she’d come from, or whether she had people, or why she’d come to the edge of a town that never looked at her.

She was so completely overlooked that she had become invisible while still drawing breath—half-forgotten by a whole town without anyone ever deciding to forget her. Just by never once choosing to remember.

The loosest thread in all of Reedmoor. Already half-gone.

And the dark, which loves nothing in all the world so much as a person no one is holding, reached for her.

We ran. I have never run like that in my life—me, Yun Shu, Bai Qing, Tao Tao, and Mu Chen.

Tearing through the fen-town in the dusk toward a hut at the edge of the water.

And I understood as I ran that my power was useless again. I could not punch the fog any more than I could before.

The only thing in the entire world that could save that old woman was the one thing I couldn’t do alone.

She had to be held. Right now. By people who knew her.

And not one single person in Reedmoor knew her at all.

So we did the only thing left.

We hammered on doors as we ran. We shouted. Tao Tao’s voice rang through the whole town—the reed-cutter, the old woman at the water’s edge, come NOW. She’s one of us, and we’re losing her!

Reedmoor, the poor overlooked fen-town that had spent three days learning that no one among them was too small to keep, came.

They poured out of their houses and ran with us through the dark—a whole town stumbling toward a hut they’d never once knocked on, to hold a woman they’d never once seen.

We got there as the fog was taking her.

She was sitting in her doorway, already going grey at the edges, already fading.

Looking out at the marsh with the mild puzzled expression of someone who has spent so long being invisible that she barely noticed she was finally disappearing for good.

And the whole town crowded into that little reed-choked yard, breathless, and didn’t know what to do.

Because you cannot hold someone you do not know—and there was so little time.

It was Bai Qing who knelt down in front of her, the gatekeeper of the overlooked.

She did the only thing that could be done. She took the fading woman’s hands.

She didn’t try to remember her because none of us could.

She learned her. Right there in the last moments, with the dark already pulling.

”Tell us your name,” Bai Qing said, fierce and gentle. ”Tell us where you’re from. Tell us one thing—one true thing—and let us hold it. You are not too small to keep. Tell us, and we will not let you go.”

And the old woman, astonished—more astonished than frightened—looked at the whole town crammed into her yard for the first time in forty years.

In a thin cracked voice that hadn’t been used to say anything real in a long time, she told them.

Her name was Wen.

She’d come from a village three days east that the floods took when she was young.

She’d cut reeds at the edge of Reedmoor for forty years because the marsh was the only thing that had never left her.

She had a sister once.

She liked the herons.

She’d watched every single child in that town grow up from a distance and had silently, privately been proud of them—all of them, the whole time. The way you’re proud of a garden you tend that doesn’t know you’re there.

Her name was Wen, and she’d lived among them for forty years, and not one of them had ever known it—and now they did.

The whole town, all at once, holding the name of the most invisible woman in Reedmoor like it was the most precious thing they owned.

And the fog reached for the thread of her and found, where there had been one fraying strand a moment before, a whole town knotted suddenly and fiercely around her—and it could not take her.

The grey receded from her edges. Old Wen came back into the world, solid and seen, held for the first time in forty years by people who finally, finally knew her name.

A single star came up over Reedmoor that night.

The first one that empty sky had ever held.

It belonged to an old reed-cutter no one had ever spoken to.

The whole town stood in her yard and watched it light, and I think half of them were weeping, and so, I’ll admit, was I.

We’d won.

The cloth worked.

The dark had pressed on Reedmoor with its careful, pitiless foot.

And Reedmoor had held—even its thinnest thread, even its most invisible soul, held by a town that three days ago hadn’t known her name.

But I’m not going to lie to you—I never have.

It was close. We saved Old Wen by a breath. We only saved her because the whole town could throw itself at one fraying thread with nothing else to do.

And as I stood in that yard under Reedmoor’s first star, I felt Bai Qing go still beside me.

I knew she’d done the same arithmetic I had—the cold arithmetic that turned all our hope to something with teeth.

”He wasn’t trying to take her,” Bai Qing said quietly. ”He was learning how long it takes us to weave one thin thread back in.”

She watched the new star burn.

”It took the whole town. All of them, on one soul, with everything else set down.”

She looked at me, and there was fear in her flat steady eyes for the first time I’d ever seen.

”Lin Bo. What happens when he reaches for the thinnest thread in a hundred towns at once?”

And there it was—the shape of the dark thing coming, clear at last.

We had the answer.

We knew how to make the world un-loseable; we’d watched it work with our own eyes.

But the cloth took time to weave, town by town, thread by thread.

Most of the whole wide world was still loose—a thousand Reedmoors full of a thousand Old Wens.

Every one of them a fraying strand the dark could find.

We could hold one thin thread if we threw everything at it.

We could not hold a thousand at once.

And Lu—who had come to Reedmoor not to win but to measure—now knew exactly how slow our salvation was.

He understood exactly how much of the world was still unwoven, and exactly how to come for all of it before we finished.

Far to the north, Grand Archivist Lu received word that the demon-slayer had found a way to make even nobodies un-erasable—and for the first time, the man who’d never doubted felt something close to urgency.

He understood that he was now in a race.

If the cloth ever finished weaving, the dark would lose.

So he began, with cold and careful speed, to plan the thing that would have to come before that: a strike on every thin place in the world at once—faster than any town could rally. A silence so wide and so sudden that there would not be time to learn a single name.

I stood in Old Wen’s reed-choked yard with my whole family, a whole town, and a brand-new star.

I let myself feel the win all the way down because we’d earned it.

And because I had a feeling we were going to need to remember how it felt.

And then I looked at Bai Qing—really looked, the way that town had finally looked at Old Wen—at this stern overlooked woman who’d spent her whole life building the answer to the cruelest thing the world had ever done to her.

She had just knelt in the mud and saved an invisible old woman by the simple act of learning her name.

Her teacher had been Erased for being unknown.

And she had just made a world where being unknown was the one thing that could be fixed, by anyone, with nothing but the choice to see each other.

”He’d be safe now,” I said softly. ”Your teacher. In a world like the one you just built. He’d never have been lost at all.”

Bai Qing didn’t answer right away. The gatekeeper who guards everything, including herself, kept her eyes on Reedmoor’s first star for a long moment.

Then she said, in a voice gone quieter and less certain than I had ever heard, ”That’s the only thing I ever wanted.”

She finally looked at me. Something in her flat composed face had come unguarded in a way she clearly hadn’t planned.

”I built it for one dead man I couldn’t save.

I didn’t expect—”

She stopped.

She didn’t finish.

She just looked at me a moment longer than a person looks at someone who only built her an army.

Then she turned firmly back to the star and said the work wasn’t done.

That we should sleep while we could.

Across the yard, Yun Shu caught my eye. Her mouth did the thing it does—warm and knowing and entirely without a shadow of worry.

Because she’s the one who saw me first and has never once doubted where she stands.

Three for three, her look said, plain as speech.

I gave her a baffled look back because I genuinely did not know what she meant.

She just shook her head and smiled and let me keep being slow about it.

But that was for later.

That night, I stood in the most ordinary place in the world, under its first and only star, and I understood three things all at once.

I understood that we had found the way to beat the dark—not the brightest light—never the brightest light—but a whole world holding each other tightly enough that the silence had nothing left to take.

The thing I’d wanted for my own small loud life—to be known, to be held, to be un-loseable to the people around me—turned out to be the exact thing that could save the entire world.

Handed out, town by town, to every overlooked soul who’d ever believed they didn’t matter.

I understood that the answer was never me.

The bravest and most powerful thing I would ever do was build a world that didn’t need me to rush in and save it.

And I understood—looking north into the dark where a cold and careful man was learning to count the thin places in the world—that we were running out of time.

The darkest hour of all of this was no longer something coming someday.

It was already on its way.
