Parallel World Light Novelist

Chapter 76: Chapter 76: Popularity Surge From the Final Chapter’s Impact

The serialization of Anohana in Crimson Maple magazine had officially come to an end, but the fervor surrounding the story in the Minamijo region showed no signs of cooling. Over the following days, the heat of the discussion reached heights even greater than on the day the finale was published.

The impact was no longer confined to the loyal subscribers of Crimson Maple. The shockwaves rippled through every fan community associated with the major publishing houses. Everyone was now aware that a legendary work had emerged. Even though the author, Shiori Takahashi, was a complete newcomer, he had managed to utterly dethrone Winter Lake, a titan of the industry written by a veteran author that had consistently dominated the top three rankings in the regional light novel scene.

Anohana had performed a near-miraculous vertical ascent. It debuted at thirteenth place, slipped to fourteenth in its second week, and then began a relentless climb that ended with a first-place finish for its fourteenth Chapter. Its final vote count exceeded thirty-nine thousand, nearly quadruple the support Winter Lake received in that same issue.

The literary critics and media outlets across the Minamijo region had collectively lost their minds. Every major website, newspaper, and forum was overflowing with hyperbolic praise for the work.

[Anohana: A soul-stirring masterpiece of friendship. In just fourteen Chapters, the genius novelist Shiori Takahashi has perfectly captured the essence of salvation.]

[The most explosive serialization in recent memory. A story that began with skepticism, grew through word of mouth, and ended in a collective, heavy silence. Why is everyone silent? Because the moment you try to speak, you start to sob.]

[After reading Anohana, every other light novel feels hollow. The only thing left in my mind is Menma’s journey. Shiori Takahashi is a once-in-a-generation talent.]

[If you live in Minamijo and haven’t read Anohana, don’t even bother calling yourself a light novel fan.]

[I count myself lucky to have followed this since Chapter one. Shiori Takahashi left a deep impression with ’Blue Spring Ride,’ which I considered the finest romance of the year. I feared she had peaked early, but then she delivered Anohana.]

[It is only August, but Anohana has already secured its place as the definitive Light Novel of the Year.]

When readers entered various forums, they were met with a sea of threads from famous critics and influencers. Without exception, every post was a glowing endorsement. Occasionally, a contrarian would attempt to pick the story apart to gain attention, but they were immediately swarmed by a tide of furious fans and forced to delete their posts in a flurry of apologies.

Even those who had never paid attention to Crimson Maple were now feeling an unbearable itch of curiosity. According to the reviews, the acclaim was reaching mythical proportions.

People weren’t just saying it was good; they were claiming it made everything else look like trash.

The problem remained that serialized stories moved quickly. Once that window passed, buying the back issues of the magazine became a nightmare. Consequently, the eyes of the entire regional fandom were fixed intently on the publisher, Crimson Maple Literature.

The story was finished, and the fans were practically banging on the doors for a physical tankōbon release. Deluxe hardcovers, spin-offs, side stories, the market was primed and ready to devour anything related to the series.

While it had been three days since the finale and a new issue of the magazine was already on the shelves, the discussion surrounding Anohana still occupied every square inch of the digital landscape.

However, the influence of the work was far from limited to the internet.

At Minamijo Third High School, the atmosphere was electric. Despite the oppressive August heat and temperatures soaring past thirty degrees, the school gates were the site of an incredible scene. A massive group of Anohana fans had organized a hundred-person rally. Many were cosplaying as Menma in her iconic white dress, holding massive banners high. Crimson Maple Literature had kept Shiori Takahashi’s identity strictly confidential, only letting slip that the author was a student at this specific high school.

The fans didn’t care about pinpointing an exact face; they just wanted to show their devotion. Banners were covered in messages like ”Shiori Takahashi-sensei, please write a sequel!” and ”We will love Menma forever!”

Faced with this level of passion, even the students who didn’t read novels began to grasp the true status of the ”Genius Author” walking among them.

”Seriously, who is it?” the students whispered in the halls. ”Who is the real Shiori Takahashi?”

”No idea. Remember that post about the summer convention? Someone took a picture of people who looked like ’Shiori Takahashi’ and ’Airi’ in cosplay together. But it only showed their backs, so it’s basically useless as proof.”

”Actually, a lot of the hardcore fans at school have started a manhunt. They’re taking that photo of the girl on the right and trying to match her silhouette to every girl in the senior year.”

”Any results?”

”There are a few who match the build, but the biggest rumor is that it’s Reina Fujimoto from Class 7. Her height, hair length, and frame are almost an exact match for the girl in the photo.”

”First of all, let’s use some logic. Do you know who Reina Fujimoto is? She’s the top student in the entire school. She’s a lock for the University of Tokyo. You really think a high-level academic like her is writing emotional fiction and running through conventions in cosplay while holding a boy’s hand? Stop dreaming. Not even a light novel would write a plot that ridiculous. The otaku in this school just have overactive imaginations.”

”But look at the discussion again. Why does everyone assume Shiori Takahashi is a girl? The post suggested the person on the left was the editor, the person in the middle was a boy, and the girl was on the right. What if Shiori Takahashi is actually the boy in the middle?”

”Are you kidding? A guy writing something as sensitive and delicate as Blue Spring Ride or Anohana? That’s impossible.”

”Well, if you think that’s impossible, do you think a guy could write Airi’s Star Sea?”

”That...”

”Exactly. That whole post was probably fake. The editor might have been there, but the other two were likely just her friends. It’s the classic ’one photo, everything else is made up’ situation. You see it all over the internet these days.”
